e are delighted to bring to you our 2015 Concert Season and in true CSO character the year is full of great orchestral masterpieces, outstanding local and international soloists and plenty of surprises. We invite you to join us in welcoming our new Chief Conductor Benjamin Northey and Concertmaster Martin Riseley to the CSO family who together with our talented musicians will form an extraordinary ensemble. The CSO is immensely proud of our place in this city and within the wider community. We are totally committed to ensuring that people of all ages and walks of life have the opportunity to experience live instrumental music be it through our concert performances or beyond the stage with our extensive outreach and education programme. As an orchestra we always embrace the opportunity to collaborate with others and in 2015 we have an impressive line-up with highlights that include NZ icons of pop and rock Anika Moa and Julia Deans, Jazz legend James Morrison’s A to Z of Jazz, a co-presentation with the NZ International Jazz & Blues Festival, and in what is sure to be a milestone for the orchestra, the premiere of a concerto for Taonga puoro (traditional Māori instruments) performed by Ariana Tikao and Philip Brownlee in collaboration with Dr Richard Nunns. We are also looking forward to continuing to work in partnership with the Christchurch City Choir, the National Concerto Competition, NZ Opera and the Royal New Zealand Ballet. Our players are at the heart of this orchestra each one with their own special connection within this community. As part of the Baroque Festival we are delighted to showcase the wonderful Anthony Ferner, Helen Webby and Thomas Eves as soloists. We are fortunate to have the loyalty, passion and belief of our sponsors, funders, donors and patrons – you continue to inspire us to do what we do. am delighted to offer my best wishes to the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra for this 2015 concert season.
The theme for this season is identity and the CSO is undoubtedly an integral component of Christchurch’s artistic character. We lost so much of the cultural fabric of our city post-earthquake and the Orchestra is to be commended for the determined and innovative approach it has taken to finding venues in which to continue performing orchestral music for the people of Christchurch. Through concerts, outreach and education activities the CSO engages with diverse communities throughout our region. It not only delivers

A word from our
Chief Conductor
I
t is a particular thrill to be able to pen this 2015 season welcome, my first as the new Chief Conductor of the CSO. I’m very honoured to be appointed to this role with such a wonderful orchestra and to follow the tenure of my colleague and dear friend Tom Woods. It’s been very clear during my previous visits to Christchurch how much the CSO means to this great city, the Canterbury region, and indeed New Zealand as a whole. I am also very inspired by the tremendous support the orchestra enjoys from you - the audience - who are the lifeblood of this art form. Whether you may be a long standing supporter of the CSO or someone who is newly discovering the magic of live classical music, it is our goal to share the most rewarding and engaging musical experience we possibly can. At each CSO concert we aspire to take you on an artistic journey. As well as sharing our mutual love of music with you, we also wish to explore what music can reveal to us about who we are, where we have come from and where we might be going. Music is in a state of perpetual evolution. It is the product of a rich artistic legacy, one that has always reflected on the past and looked to the future.
“I am also very inspired by the tremendous support the orchestra enjoys from you - the audience - who are the lifeblood of this art form.” In the 2015 Masterworks series alone we span almost 350 years of orchestral music from baroque masters Corelli, Vivaldi, Rameau, Bach & Handel, through 19th century giants Beethoven, Dvořák, Mendelssohn & Rimsky-Korsakov, 20th century icons Britten, Sibelius, Martinů , Pärt, Lilburn & Sculthorpe right through to contemporary composers Philip Brownlee, Lissa Meridan and Nigel Westlake. With the ongoing commemorations of the First World War, we mark this anniversary with an undoubted highlight of the season - the War Requiem by Benjamin Britten. Involving huge orchestral forces, soloists and massed choirs this promises to be one of the most emotionally powerful performances yet undertaken by the CSO, a concert not to be missed.
Our star-studded line-up of soloists include pianists Grace Kim, Claire-Marie Le Guay and a welcome return by the brilliant SilverGarburg Piano Duo. Ariana Tikao performs on traditional Māori instruments in what promises to be a fascinating concerto for Taonga Puoro and orchestra by Philip Brownlee. I am also delighted to feature internationally renowned guitarist Slava Grigoryan and the gifted Australian violinist Kristian Winther. Our festival of baroque music also highlights the solo talents from within the CSO such as flautist Tony Ferner, harpist Helen Webby and trumpeter Thomas Eves. The three-concert series culminates in another season highlight – the Bach Magnificat featuring the outstanding voices of Anna Hoetjes, Barbara Graham, Claire Barton, James Clayton, Henry Choo and the Consortia chamber choir. The CSO Presents series also has some real gems to look forward to. Musical genius and multi-instrumentalist James Morrison takes us on a breathtaking journey through jazz and you won’t believe what you hear! From Christchurch Rock Divas to pirate movies, kids concerts, a rollicking Last Night of the Proms and the annual Canterbury Christmas we are proud to offer a broad range of engaging musical experiences for your enjoyment. oin us for an evening of music inspired by the dramatic and distinctive landscapes of New Zealand, Antarctica and Finland.
Douglas Lilburn’s Aotearoa overture explores the shimmer of light on the sea surrounding the New Zealand coastline. Lilburn wished to reflect a sense of freshness and exhilaration in this, one of his earlier symphonic compositions. Commemorating 100 years since his birth, Lilburn has been described as the grandfather of New Zealand music.
Paco Peña and Leo Kottke and he has subsequently appeared with many of the world’s leading orchestras, including the London Philharmonic, The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Israel Symphony Orchestra, Dresden Radio Orchestra and all of the Australian Symphony Orchestras. Like Lilburn, Sibelius was also committed to reflecting his country’s voice through his music. Capturing the nationalist fervour sweeping Finland at the time, Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2 is one of the masterpieces of the romantic era.

O
riginally composed as instrumental interludes between scenes for Benjamin Britten’s landmark opera Peter Grimes, the Four Sea Interludes are a fascinating evocation of the ever changing moods of the sea. Czech composer Bohuslav Martinů ’s Concerto for Two Pianos and Orchestra is a virtuostic tour-de-force that draws on a range of musical influences including jazz, tango and bohemian folk. Composed in 1943 shortly after Martinů emigrated to America, the concerto is a wonderful combination of soaring lyrical melodies and driving, syncopated rhythms.

The CSO is delighted to welcome back to Christchurch the captivating Silver Garburg Piano Duo. With performances in 50 countries across 5 different continents, the Silver Garburg Piano Duo is hailed as one of the leading piano duos performing today. While undertaking a walking tour of Scotland, Mendelssohn was reputed to have been deeply moved by an evening twilight visit to the ruins of a chapel in the Holyrood Palace. Shortly after this experience he composed his third symphony which subsequently earned the nickname “the Scottish”. It is an atmospheric piece that has become widely regarded as Mendelssohn’s finest orchestral work.

n what promises to be a landmark performance for the CSO and New Zealand composition, Ariana Tikao will be premiering a concerto for Taonga puoro (traditional Māori instruments) and orchestra composed by Philip Brownlee in collaboration with renowned Taonga puoro expert, Dr Richard Nunns. Commissioned by the CSO with funding from Creative New Zealand, this will be the first time Taonga puoro are featured in a solo concerto role with symphony orchestra. Ranging from delicate and subtle in sound and texture to assertive, percussive and strident, considerable work has been undertaken by Dr Richard Nunns, Brian Flintoff and the late
Hirini Melbourne towards gaining a greater understanding of the role Taonga puoro played in aspects of Māori culture. Lissa Meridan is a New Zealand composer currently based in Paris. During 2007 she found herself taking a number of field recordings of the street noise of Paris. These recordings form the basis for A Quiet Fury, a composition for orchestra and live electronics that capture the various energies of the ambient noise of this city. Sun Music III by Australian composer Peter Sculthorpe demonstrates his fascination with Balinese culture. The music is infused with sounds inspired by gamelan shadow-play songs.

omposers Albéniz and de Falla lead us on a fascinating journey around Spain in an evening of music that captures the sights and sounds, colours and spirit of their native country. Composed in the impressionist style and loosely evoking Spanish dance and folk flavours, Debussy was a great admirer of Iberia and Suite Española stating “Never has music achieved such diversified, such colourful impressions: one’s eyes close, as though dazzled by beholding such a wealth of imagery.” Manuel de Falla, like Albéniz, commenced his formal musical training studying piano at the Madrid Conservatory.

Moving to Paris as a young musician, he was befriended by Debussy, Ravel and Dukas and combined their musical influences with his own love of Spanish exoticism. De Falla’s Nights in the Gardens of Spain for solo piano and orchestra depicts three different gardens, capturing the scent laden air and cool respite from the heat of the Spanish sun. Australian pianist Grace Kim will make her debut with the CSO performing Nights in the Gardens of Spain. As a concerto soloist, Grace Kim has performed with orchestras throughout Australia, Belgium, Turkey, Russia and the Ukraine and her recordings are regularly broadcast on radio and television in Australasia, Europe and China.

he Romantic Movement embodied themes of heroism, the spirit of humanity and the natural world. It was art for the soul capturing emotions over reason and flying in the face of 18th Century classical ideals of formality and restraint. Beethoven is considered the first composer to usher in the new Romantic ideals. His Egmont Overture was composed for a play by Goethe, inspired by the heroic actions of the 16th century Dutch nobleman Count Egmont, who was condemned to death for protesting against the oppressive actions of the Spanish court. Mendelssohn’s lyrical masterpiece for violin and orchestra is considered one of the most popular and frequently performed violin concertos of all times. Making his debut with the CSO, Kristian Winther is hailed as one of Australia’s greatest violinists performing today. Currently first violin with the Australian String Quartet, Kristian has appeared as soloist with all of the major Australian orchestras. While often associated with stormy and emotionally charged music, Czech composer Antonín Dvorák’s 8th Symphony is by contrast a cheerful and lyrical work. Composed towards the end of the romantic musical period, this symphony is heavily influenced by Dvorák’s great love for traditional Bohemian music.

n the evening of the 14th November 1940 the 14th century St Michael’s Cathedral in the centre of Coventry was almost completely destroyed by Luftwaffe bombing. A little over 22 years later Benjamin Britten’s War Requiem was premiered to mark the re-consecration of a new cathedral built adjacent to the ruins of the original. The War Requiem reflects Britten’s deeply held pacifist and humanitarian beliefs, weaving nine poems of the
World War I poet, Wilfred Owen, amongst the setting of the traditional Latin Missa pro Defunctis. The resulting composition is a work of profound emotional and moral depth that has become regarded as one of the great choral works of the 20th century. We are delighted to present this performance in association with the Christchurch City Choir.

imsky-Korsakov’s tone poem Scheherazade is a sumptuous display of orchestral colour. Inspired by the Tales of One Thousand and One Nights the music is infused with the spice and mystery of the orient. Rachmaninov’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini pays homage to the extraordinary 19th century virtuosi violinist, Paganini, through its own pianistic fireworks. Composed by Rachmaninov in 1934, the premiere featured the composer as soloist. The work found immediate favour with critics and audience alike and continues to astound and delight listeners today.

Le Guay has performed throughout the world with a glittering array of orchestras including London Philharmonic, Orchestre de Paris, the New Japan Philharmonic and Bayerische Rundfunk Orchestra. Her extensive discography has received great critical praise with Gramophon describing her playing as “vivacious, nimble and heartfelt”. Arvo Pärt is an Estonian minimalist composer whose music takes inspiration from Gregorian chant and Medieval and Renaissance instrumental and vocal music. Fratres is an exquisite piece that conveys a sense of reverence and timelessness.

James Morrison’s critically acclaimed A to Z of Jazz is a journey through the history of jazz with a snapshot of some of its most important people and moments. Featuring music from the greats including Duke Ellington, Count Basie and Miles Davis, you’ll be taken from Dixieland to Bebop, Blues to Birdland.

he CSO Presents series would not be complete without the orchestra’s annual salute to the British musical tradition of Last Night of the Proms.
With Union Jack flags at the ready let the pomp and circumstance begin.
Full voice is mandatory for the British patriotic pieces Land of Hope and Glory, Rule Britannia and Jerusalem and the throwing of streamers is highly encouraged. Add to the mix the beautiful surroundings of the Isaac Theatre Royal and you would almost feel like you were in the Albert Hall.

ecently inducted into the New Zealand Music Hall of Fame – posthumously joining Hello Sailor, The Topp Twins, Dave Dobbyn and Straightjacket Fits – Douglas Lilburn is widely revered as the ‘grandfather of New Zealand composition’. He is also still much admired for his compositional achievements, especially for those works he composed with the expressed intent of capturing the New Zealand landscape in sound. Many of these he wrote while living in Christchurch in the 1930’s and 40’s. ‘Lilburn at 100’ celebrates the life and musical achievements of this extraordinary New Zealander, using the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of his birth to offer a multi-media tribute. In an exciting new twist for the CSO, Dr Philip Norman, author of an award winning biography on Lilburn (Douglas Lilburn, Canterbury University Press 2006), will introduce and conduct handpicked plums from the Lilburn oeuvre. Expect a montage of movements, melodies and musical moments woven into one with witty narrative and insightful observations as well as an array of visuals to add further illumination and sparkle.

Baroque Festival
F
ollowing hot on the heels of the Renaissance era, Baroque music burst on to the scene around 1600 and continued to shock and delight listeners for the next 150 years. It encompassed a huge range of diverse musical styles and genres and covered a time of great political and social change throughout Europe. The music of this new
wave of composers was considered bizarre, extravagant and un-natural in its excessive virtuosity. During this Festival we explore the later years of the Baroque era, performing some of the pivotal works of Handel, Lully, Vivaldi, Torelli, Rameau and Bach.

eorge Frideric Handel composed some of the “greatest hits” of the Baroque period including the Water Music and Fireworks Suites, Zadok the Priest and The Messiah.
CSO’s Principal Harpist Helen Webby will perform Handel’s Bb major concerto for harp and orchestra. Composed and premiered in 1736 the concerto demonstrates great charm and beauty with a fine sense of delicacy and lightness.
The Water Music Suite was composed for a party on the river Thames being held by King George I. The jaunty and spirited music was perfect for the outdoor setting and was so popular with the monarch and his guests, the musicians were requested to perform it three times.
Handel composed the opera Alcina for the final season of his opera company, The Royal Academy of Music. The opera is inspired by Italian poet Ludovico Ariosto’s epic poem Orlando furioso which is set in the time of Charlemagne. The overture is a brilliant display of virtuostic writing that bristles with spirit and vitality.

ean-Baptiste Lully was appointed composer to the court of the Sun King, Louis XIV, during one of the most extraordinary ages of arts patronage. Surrounded by the wondrous riches of Versailles, Lully is credited with developing the French Baroque style and popularised many of the dance forms we associate with the Baroque period: Gavotte, Minuet and Sarabande. Rameau, considered to be Lully’s successor, developed a notable reputation as a composer of opera and
instrumental works. Les Indes galantes is an exotic operaballet concerned with the universality of Love. The music and dances wowed the audience attending the Paris premiere and it became the most popular work in his oeuvre. We’re delighted to feature in this programme CSO musicians Anthony Ferner and Thomas Eves performing Vivaldi’s concerto “La Notte” (The Night) for flute and strings and Torelli’s Trumpet Concerto in D major.

ohann Sebastian Bach was a genius, a maverick and a visionary. Music would never be the same again. His impact continues to be felt today and still inspires performers and composers across all types of music. Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 belongs to a set of six works dedicated to Christian Ludwig, Margrave of Brandenburg. Hailed as some of Bach’s finest instrumental writing, this concerto is composed for three violins, three violas, three cellos and basso continuo. Bach’s second orchestral suite is a collection of French inspired dance pieces that are particularly characterised

by virtuostic writing for the flute and an effervescent and sparkling lightness. Bach composed the Magnificat for the 1723 Christmas Vespers in Leipzig. The original score was written in the key of E-flat but Bach later revised it, removing the Christmas interpolations and transposing it into D – a much brighter and more jubilant key. The Magnificat demonstrates Bach’s love of splendour combined with drama and is a perfect finale for the 2015 Festival.

elcome to the Friends of Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. The Friends of the CSO have been in existence for many years but not everyone knows about us. We help support our orchestra financially and share some great moments along the way.
However, the Friends are not only about fundraising for the orchestra. We also arrange a variety of social occasions for our members throughout the year to give them the opportunity to meet others who share their interest in music.
We have some wonderful events planned for 2015 and invite you to come along and enjoy them with us. You will have the opportunity to meet our new Conductor, Benjamin Northey, newly appointed Concertmaster Martin Riseley, as well as some of the celebrated guest artists who will perform with the orchestra. You will also have the opportunity to meet the players as real people, not just ‘an orchestra’ performing on a stage.
So please come and join us. Annual subscriptions are very reasonably priced at $50 for adults and $30 for seniors (over 65). For this small investment you will be able to enjoy the privileges and benefits of membership throughout the year. We will keep you informed of what’s happening within the CSO family in our quarterly newsletters and send you invitations to all our events.
In spite of what some people may think, the Friends are not an elite group. People from various backgrounds who share a common love of music from the classics to songs from the shows join the Friends, sharing a passion for our very own Christchurch Symphony Orchestra. We are proud to have been invited by the management of the CSO to co-sponsor the performance of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest. We embrace the challenge to raise a significant amount of money to achieve this and know from past experience that there is much fun to be had while fundraising. There is also the tangible reward of knowing we have been instrumental in making it possible to bring this wonderful performance to concert goers.

CSO Foundation
T
he CSO Foundation Trust, created in 1994, is dedicated to securing the future of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
The Foundation is independent of the CSO Trust which governs the CSO but works in close harmony with the board to support the orchestra.
The Foundation has three major projects: • The Foundation’s vision is to grow the endowment fund to a sufficient size that the income derived, after reinvestment to maintain the capital base, provides the orchestra with supplementary funding from time to time. • Providing a permanent home for the orchestra in Christchurch in conjunction with the artistic plan for our rebuilt city. • Purchasing instruments the orchestra needs. • During 2014 the CSO Foundation purchased for the orchestra Tubular Bells, Keyboard & Amplifier, Bassoon Stands and a Drum Kit.
The CSO Foundation Trust is registered with the Charities Commission and gifts to the Foundation may be tax deductible in accordance with taxation legislation. Gifts to the Foundation of any size will make a difference to securing the future of music in Christchurch and the South Island. Outreach & Education
O
ur Outreach and Education programme offers a wide range of exciting experiences for our community to actively engage with the CSO. These projects are designed in partnership with teachers, schools and community groups to inspire and encourage people of all ages, backgrounds and abilities in the enjoyment of live orchestral music. In 2015 we will present more than 100 outreach activities to 20,000 people throughout the South Island which will include: Opportunities to meet CSO players and their instruments are given through: • Lively interactive instrument demonstrations by an ensemble at schools and preschools
Major Projects include:
CSO Residency Programme In this innovative and highly acclaimed programme, six CSO players work in a primary school for a week on projects specifically designed to meet the school’s needs and expectations. The week-long programme culminates in a concert given by the students for their peers, teachers, parents and wider community. Projects may include playing drums by reading a musical score, making an instrument, rhymes with actions, conducting rhythmic speech, creating and playing from a graphic musical score, learning to play percussion instruments as a coherent group, and creating a soundscape for a story.

Composition Workshops Our workshops engage and extend high school students in composing and arranging for orchestral instruments. The workshops are held over two sessions – the first to demonstrate the instruments and explain the elements of music, and the second session to perform the students’ works with positive feedback and encouragement. Students, who have participated in our composition workshops, have been stimulated by the genuine attention the players give to their music and the expressiveness and richness of live sound.

We are excited about playing in an orchestra - and tutoring sectionals is a tangible way for us to share our passion and expertise. We find that not only do we share tips and advice on playing the instrument or working together as a large ensemble, but also that we build relationships with young aspiring performers. We enjoy sharing snapshots of our own journey and assisting others as they create their own musical pathway.

Ambassador Programme This rapidly developing/expanding programme now involves more than 11 high schools and 30 high school students in Canterbury. Students are selected by their schools and given opportunities to invite their fellow students to attend selected CSO concerts free of charge. The ambassadors meet players in the orchestra, attend backstage tours, engage with conductors and soloists and have the option of a lesson with a CSO player on their chosen instrument.

Musical Art Live orchestral sound can add an extra dimension to other art forms, and we enjoy collaborating with dancers and artists in new innovative projects.

By investing directly in our players you help secure the future of the orchestra. Chairs start at $2,000 per year, and supporters remain closely connected with the orchestra through a variety of events and opportunities such as open rehearsals, pre and post-concert functions, and regular updates on what is happening with the orchestra. How to Book Tickets to The CSO We want to make it as easy as possible for you to book tickets to CSO concerts so have provided a range of options for you:
Become a CSO Season Member
Single Ticket Bookings
By subscribing to six or more concerts in the CSO 2015 concert season you will automatically become a Season Member and receive the following benefits:
If you would like to book tickets to any concerts within the CSO’s 2015 season before the 2nd February 2015 you can make your booking online www.cso.co.nz or fill in the form attached in this brochure.
Priority Reserved Seating In 2015 the CSO will be performing in a variety of venues (see maps on page 44) and we want to ensure our Season Members have access to the best seats in the house. Book before the 31st January to receive priority reserved seating. To request your seats for the season please:
If you are booking after the 2nd February 2015 you can do so via www.cso.co.nz or through the CSO approved ticketing agent for each concert. These are indicated on the booking form. If you are booking after the 2nd February a booking and/or service may apply.
Family Pass Tickets In concerts where a Family Pass are available this represents two adults and two children.
