The Art of Conviction In 1984, Philiip Waddington walked into the Lower Hutt police station, sure that several paintings and sketches attributed to Charles Frederick Goldie were fake. It was a significant milestone in the subsequent (1986) conviction of Karl Sim, a likeable caravan-dwelling rogue from Foxton, who would not only become New Zealand’s most well-known art forger but catapult into infamy as one of the top 10 forgers in the world. According to Sim, he’d had everyone going for 17 years, ‘the experts and art dealers and snobs … all of them looking to make a fast buck’. For Sim himself, ‘I was just looking for a bit of fun’. Goldie’s work is now, technology - and internet-assisted, well-evidenced however Waddington is perhaps unique in understanding the fastidious task of recreating the master’s works. He’s spent decades studying Goldie, including receiving insights on the painter’s practice from Maurice Poulton who spent valuable time talking with the master and watching him work. Waddington’s painting of Ina Te Papatahi (Ngāpuhi), one of Goldie’s favourite models, is truly exquisite; he calls it one of the best After-Goldie’s he’s ever done. Proudly signed ‘P.J. Waddington’, the artist has never – unlike Sim – had any desire to deceive people with his work. Waddington’s reverence for Goldie is what drove him to support Sim’s conviction. This included exposure to the art world’s underbelly, particularly a threatening phone call, ‘be careful what you say in the trial or you’ll be found floating in the harbour’. Several dealers, auction houses and public figures were implicated or wound-up in Sim’s rort; beyond Goldie there were forgeries of international Grand Masters and domestic works by Rita Angus, Petrus Van der Velden, Frances Hodgkins and others – a ‘work’ by Colin McCahon even made a Sotheby’s catalogue in the UK. Some New Zealand institutions were also duped. The pencil sketch of Goldie’s “Reminiscences”, a portrait of Rahapa Hinetapu (Ngati Whakaue), was drawn in 1983 amidst the chatter of Goldie fakes. While signed by Waddington himself, dealers told him his signature could well be rubbed off and replaced by ‘C. F. Goldie’. Cunningly, Waddington added his initials in invisible ink, using lemon juice which he knew could be revealed by heat. Little did he know, however, that chemical interactions would make up their own mind over time on the reveal: the initials now permanently within the subject’s hair. Waddington’s portrait of Sarah Matu Namana (Ngati Kahungunu), played an important role in Sim’s trial. The painting sat in the courtroom each day, proof of Goldie-style copies and, according to Detective Phill Frost, a strategy to intimidate Sim. This makes the painting a significant artefact in the history of New Zealand art crime, including the court evidence records on the back. While loosely Goldie-esque in style, the master himself never painted this wahine. Her art-life only commenced in 1983 through a fake Goldie sketch by Sim, based on a photograph that came into his shop. Coincidentally, Waddington had been commissioned to paint the wahine for a descendant – using the same photo – when he was asked to verify the sketch. To Waddington’s eye, the wahine had been aged, and a moko added, but the similarity to the photo was very clear. Waddington’s interest in Sim’s crime, and the drive to preserve Goldie’s integrity, were further fuelled. Surprisingly, Waddington and Sim built a friendly relationship, including sharing wine after the guilty verdict (Sim avoided jail; he was fined $1,000 and undertook community service painting murals). In his book, Sim recalled trying to trick Waddington to help his defence but ‘old Waddington was too straight to fall for it and good on him. I loved him. … He paints exactly like Goldie did, undercoats and all. He was the one that worked out the difference between my strokes in the shading, how my hatching was different to Goldie’s curved rather than straight. Waddington was a real scholar of Goldie. … I should have studied more. For all my crooked scheming against him, Waddington was never nasty to me, not once. … We were kindred spirits. We both loved Goldie.’ There you have it, high praise from one ‘master’ to another. Peter Alsop

Edgar Mansfield (1907 - 1996) “Surely it is better to create tomorrow’s past than it is to repeat today’s” Edgar Mansfield O.B.E. was born in London in 1907, emigrating and settling with his family in Hastings, New Zealand in 1911. Mansfield is internationally regarded as one of New Zealand’s finest artists and bookbinders, but he was also a designer, a philosopher and a teacher. He studied at the King Edward Technical College in Dunedin and in 1934, Mansfield made the decision to return to London to further his studies in crafts and creative design. However, he remained critical of the London colleges, writing “No one had done anything since they obtained a diploma and began to teach their non-productive teachers’ theories”. Inspired by Cubism and Surrealism, Mansfield’s bookbinding and sculpting style was influenced by Picasso, Paul Klee, Henry Moore and Barbara Hepworth, with an emphasis on fluid lines and what Edgar called his ‘scribble’ designs. He was again dismayed that no-one in the English art schools had heard of these artists or failed to appreciate them. When it came to bookbinding, he was unconcerned with the quality of the printing he bound and preferred to use unpolished, blemished goatskin from Nigeria, highlighting imperfections in the leather and even adding his own ink markings if necessary. After serving during the second world war, he began teaching at the London College of Printing between 1948 and 1964, where a distinct Mansfield style developed among his students at the college. After his teaching days, Mansfield, frustrated by the ‘dirty buildings and the atmosphere and the noise’ of London, returned to the Hawkes Bay where he embarked on his sculptural artistry. When it came to sculpture, pieces of driftwood often inspired his work, carving and adding to their form until it was satisfactory. Mansfield moved away from bookbinding in his later years as he focused on sculpture due to his deteriorating eye-sight. It is clear in his sculptural work the influences of artists such as Hepworth and Moore are present with their flowing organic forms. Despite being born in England and spending much of his career in London, Mansfield considered himself ‘a New Zealander through and through’. He became the first president of the British Guild of Contemporary Bookbinders (1955-1968) and became a fellow of the Royal Society of British Sculptors in 1980, In 1978 he was honoured with the first exhibition devoted to a living bookbinder at the Victoria and Albert Museum London and awarded an O.B.E a year later for his services to bookbinding and sculpture.

Fleischl Collection A Wellington Story Hilda Berdach, a medical student and secular Jew in Vienna and her young child escaped to Italy following the Austrian Anschluss 1938. Her long-time partner Mario Fleischl a psychoanalyst who had studied under Anna Freud joined them in Italy two weeks later. The family obtained temporary visas for Switzerland where Hilda was able to finish her medical degree. The two married in London in 1939, and after considerable efforts to escape the Nazi occupation of their Austrian homeland they finally gained visas to New Zealand. When the Fleischls landed in Wellington as continental refugees in 1943 they found themselves to be part of a bourgeoning community of recent European émigré writers, professionals, academics and artists. Juxtaposed against a backdrop of number 8 fence wire anti-intellectual attitudes the Fleischls and their cohort, who included the likes of Karl Popper, Peter Munz, Ernst Plischke, and Theo Schoon, were highly educated, intellectually sophisticated and polymathic. In the world that they came from, visual arts, literature and music were prime areas of intellectual exploration. It was the air that they breathed. Hilda and Mario embraced their new home in Wellington, they made a conscious decision to live as New Zealanders and stopped speaking German at home. They bought a house on Creswick Terrace in Northland. Hilda set up her medical practice in the Northland Centre, and Mario set up practice rooms for psychoanalysis in Druid house on Woodward Street where he became a foundation member of the New Zealand branch of the British Psychological Society earning the respect of many psychiatrists, physicians, university lecturers and students. Their son Peter recalls that it took some months for their furniture, books, and piano to arrive from Vienna and that among the items was a huge commercial espresso machine, probably the first in New Zealand. Their home became a sanctuary for local artists, academics, and students where the exchange of ideas took place in a climate of intellectual generosity and unwavering hospitality. Along with other educated continental refugees they wrote and lectured, conversed and spread ideas among friends and acquaintances. Among their many lifelong friends and associates were artists Colin McCahon, Douglas MacDiarmid, Theo Schoon, and the celebrated mid-century historian and critic J.C Beaglehole. As ardent supporters of the arts the Fleischls collected works by up-and-coming artists. Following a small exhibition at the French Maid Coffee House in Wellington in 1945, McCahon gained his first commission from Hilda and Mario, this was the compelling and best-known landscape “Otago Penisula.” From an aerial viewpoint, the sombre-toned peninsula spreads forth, it is tipped up space further enhancing a feeling of estrangement. In this and later landscapes, McCahon revealed his concern for the underlying structure of landforms, and their capability of being interpreted symbolically. McCahon commented on how influential the Fleischls support had been for the early career artists of the time: “The Fleischls…did a hell of a lot to support us in those early days…we couldn’t have done without them.” As McCahon struggled to find himself as an artist, he turned to the work of various European artists and the lifeways of those who were committed to these philosophies and aesthetics. In coming to understand his own voice his ideas began to gel in works such as ‘Harriet Simeon’ (1945), which remained in the Fleischl collection until it was bequeathed to Te Papa by the Fleischl family in July this year. Douglas MacDiarmid also speaks warmly of his close friendship with the Fleischls, how crucial their knowledge and intensities were to his practice. MacDiarmid found New Zealand mainstream society limiting and repressive “live in New Zealand and suffocate – or chose Europe and hope for a measure of adaptation.” MacDiarmid had little time for the conventional, formulaic, Anglo-oriented, parochial and ‘polite’ arts of the day. MacDiarmid, like McCahon, tapped into the conflicted states of mind and feeling of those neither inside nor outside societal norms. For MacDiarmid and McCahon, and other artists of the time the Fleischls provided a safe haven where the visceral and dichotomous inward feelings of dislocation were examined and given light. The Fleischls home was an informal space free of moral judgement for the philosophical and artistic voices that were expressing existential concerns. In bringing their inclusiveness, culture, curiosity and acceptance to the lives of artists the Fleischls influenced working practice and in turn the tenor of what was permissible and realisable in art within ordinary culture in New Zealand. Hilda died in 1968. Mario remarried good friend and close confident, the concert pianist and highly regarded music lecturer at Victoria University Margaret Nielson. Following the death of Mario in 1971 Margaret has been the custodian of the Fleischl Collection for over 50 years until her death in April this year. Melissa Parkinson BSc Hons, MA

Thomas Cane (1830 - 1905) Thomas Cane was born in Brighton, Sussex, England in 1930. He trained as an architect and quantity surveyor under the firm Banks & Barry of London. However, he decided to emigrate to Canterbury, New Zealand and on December 31st 1873, Cane, his wife Emma, and their nine children arrived in the port of Lyttleton onboard the Star of India. Throughout his artistic career, Cane subscribed solely to the watercolour medium and focused on Canterbury subjects, often depicting the Banks Peninsula and Akaroa region. These works sold well and were popular among the settlers. “According to family law Cane would dash off a couple of these works in a morning and take them to Fisher’s Fine Arts in the afternoon and proceed to Coker’s Hotel with the earnings and shout the bar” (Vangioni, 2007). He was a member of the Canterbury Society of Arts and regularly contributed to their exhibitions. His artistry was supplement to his architectural work, where he was appointed as Canterbury’s provincial architect in 1875. Cane designed buildings such as Christchurch Girls’ High School, the Lyttelton Timeball Station, The Albion Hotel Lyttelton and other iconic Canterbury buildings. Thomas Cane passed away in Christchurch in 1905, with much of his work now held in the Canterbury Museum, Christchurch Art Gallery and Alexander Turnbull Library.

It comprises one of the finest collection of hei-tiki ever offered on the New Zealand market The collection also includes a large collection of fine mere pounamu, a superb poutokomanawa, a fine kahu kiwi, kete, a rare whalebone hoeroa, early whakahuia and a large collection of rare Ngati Tarawhai tobacco pipes and related whakairo. Also included in the sale will be a superb offering of tokotoko and whakairo.

BUYERS GUIDE If you have not bought from Dunbar Sloane before, please read the following notes. Staff will be pleased to answer any questions you may have. BEFORE AUCTION
2. Absentee Bidding
AFTER THE AUCTION
The terms and conditions under which the buyer acts at a sale are detailed at the back of this catalogue. We recommend that you read and understand these conditions of business before registering to bid at an auction. This sale is subject to the conditions of business printed in this catalogue and to the reserves.
If you are unable to attend the auction, Dunbar Sloane Ltd can bid on your behalf according to your written instructions. This is a free service for intended buyers. Please complete clearly the form at the back of this catalogue and submit it to Dunbar Sloane Ltd at least 24 hours before the sale to ensure it is safely received. Lots will be purchased for you as reasonably as possible, subject to other bids in the room and to reserves.
Payment
Viewing All lots are available for inspection prior to the sale. Although staff will endeavour to answer your enquiries, and give advice, the final decision to bid, is at your discretion and liability.
Pre-Sale Estimates The estimated prices printed below the catalogue descriptions are in New Zealand dollars and are the approximate prices expected to be realised, excluding buyers premium. They are not definitive, they are prepared well in advance of the sale and they are subject to revision.
Condition Reports Dunbar Sloane Ltd will provide a verbal condition report if you would like an opinion on any particular lot prior to purchasing. These must be requested at least 24 hours before the commencement of auction. All goods are sold “as is” and it is up to the buyer to satisfy themselves as to the condition of an item before the auction.

3. Telephone Bidding If you are unable to attend the auction, you can elect to bid by telephone (subject to availability). Telephone bidding must be arranged with Dunbar Sloane Ltd prior to the sale and is subject to a minimum lot estimate of $500 or greater. Please note that the auctioneer determines the increments in bidding, not the telephone bidder. We accept no responsibility if for whatever reason we are unable to contact you and as such recommend leaving a covering bid. 4. Live Online Bidding We offer live online bidding on our website: www.dunbarsloane.co.nz Registering online does not automatically register to bid, and further identification maybe required, especially if you are an International client.
Selling Rate Fine Art auctions are generally conducted at the rate of about 60 lots per hour. However, this can vary.
Buying at Auction
You are able to bid using the following four methods: 1. Bidding in the Room
BUYERS PREMIUM
To bid at the auction you will need to register for a bidding number at the front desk either during the viewing or prior to the auction. Please bid clearly and promptly using your bidding number.
The buyer shall pay to Dunbar Sloane Ltd a premium of 19% of the hammer price plus GST on the premium only – effectively adding 21.85% to the hammer price.

Payment for purchase is due in New Zealand dollars within 48 hours from the date of sale by cash, cheque, eftpos or electronic transfer. Due to the Anti Money Laundering Act we no longer accept cash or cheques for purchases of $10,000 or over. International clients will need to add an additional $25NZD to cover bank transfer fees.
Collection of Purchases Property purchased can be collected as soon as full payment has been received. Any items not collected within seven days of the auction may be subject to a storage fee. Insurance (subject to terms and conditions) applies for up to two working days from the date of the sale whilst items are in our care. Items must be paid for straight away and a second account for courier/freight charges will follow as soon as possible when we have confirmed courier charges.
Packaging and Transportation We advise buyers to arrange transport and insurance with their preferred provider/s. We accept no responsibility for loss or damage in transit. For smaller items able to be couriered, Dunbar Sloane Ltd can pack and courier for a fee. This is to be paid before the goods leave our premises. We pack with care, however we take no responsibility for damage once your goods leave our premises. It is up to the buyer to arrange insurance to cover any damage or loss in transit.

The highest Bidder is deemed to be the Buyer, and if during the Auction the Auctioneer considers that a dispute has arisen, the Lot in dispute shall be immediately put up again for sale.

The Buyer shall forthwith upon the purchase give in his/her name and permanent address. The Buyer may be required to pay down forthwith the whole or any part of the Purchase Money, and if he/she fails to do so,the Lot may at the Auctioneers absolute discretion be put up again and resold.
Dunbar Sloane Ltd act as agents only and neither they nor the Seller are responsible for any faults or defects in any Lot or the correctness of any statement as the authorship, origin, date, age, attribution, genuineness, provenance or condition of any Lot. ll statements in the Catalogues, A Advertisements or Brochures of forthcoming sales as to any of the matters specified in (b) above are statements of opinion, and are not to be relied upon as statements of representations of fact, and intending purchasers must satisfy themselves by inspection or otherwise as to all of the matters specified in (b) above, as to the physical description of any Lot, and as to whether or not any Lot has been repaired. The Seller and Dunbar Sloane Ltd do not make or give, nor has any person in the employment of Dunbar Sloane Ltd any authority to make or give, any representation or warranty. In any event neither the Seller nor Dunbar Sloane Ltd are responsible for any representation or warranty, or for any statement in the Catalogues, Advertisements or Brochures of forthcoming sales. 6. Not withstanding any other terms of these conditions, if within 7 days after the sale Dunbar Sloane Ltd have received from the Buyer of any Lot notice in writing that in his view the Lot is deliberate forgery and within 9 days after such notification, the Buyer returns the same to Dunbar Sloane Ltd in the same condition as at the time of sale and satisfies Dunbar Sloane
Ltd had considered in the light of the entry in the Catalogue the Lot is a deliberate forgery then the sale of the Lot will be rescinded and the purchase price of the same refunded. 7. To prevent inaccuracy in delivery, and inconvenience in settlement of Purchase, no Lot can be taken away during the times of sale, nor can any Lot be taken away unless it has been paid for in full. All lots are to be paid for and taken away at the Buyer’s expense within two working days from the sale.
