Matching the dramatic weather this past month there’s been a ‘flood’ of new equipment to coincide with Japan’s CP+ show. Coming your way to sales over the next few weeks is new gear from just about all the major players, whilst we also give you the lowdown on their plans to exhibit at a certain new UK trade event

fter many months of build up that began with an exclusive announcement on the cover of our July/ August 2013 issue, The Photography Show is finally upon us. Will it offer the trade all the opportunities that Focus on Imaging did, but with a fresh perspective, youthful vigour and sense of purpose? We certainly hope so. Whilst with 34,397 visitors across four days nobody felt that Focus was on its last legs, it hadn’t altered its approach much in the almost 15 years that I had been visiting. And, apart from the new kit on display which always gave it a shot in the arm, inevitably anything that carries on for almost a quarter of a Century can get a bit ‘same old, same old’. Still, whether we wanted it or had it thrust upon us, change is what we’ve got. Positively, most of the industry appears to be backing the new show and, with mere days to go, there’s the distinct sense of ‘bigger and better’ than what has gone before. That may be partly down to household names including Canon, Panasonic and Samsung all committing, whereas in recent (Focus) years some big players have either not exhibited or yo-yo’d in and out, leaving visitors confused as to whether they were due to be there or not. Other regulars such as Fujifilm, Olympus and Nikon are returning with large and exciting stands too. But it’s not all about the gear – a big part of the event is its promised educational aspect, which, if done successfully, feeds back into increased sales for all In terms of trends to investigate and new kit to look out for at The Photography Show, we’ve peppered this edition with previews. To take mini labs for one, Kodak Alaris, Fujifilm and DNP are all offering software to easier enable the smartphone photographer to make prints direct. Likewise the majority of new cameras are offering wireless connectivity for easier download, printing and sharing with a smartphone; even the higher end models aimed at photo enthusiasts who, one would assume, comprise a large amount of traditionalists. One thing’s for certain. As the tribulations of the last couple of years have taught us, things are moving a-pace, and we all need to keep moving ourselves to thrive. Hopefully The Photography Show will give us the tools to enable that to happen. See you there! – Gavin Stoker

Instant printers on Roskerr’s roster

PANASONIC has taken the covers off its fourth generation flagship Lumix G ‘CSC’ in the aptly christened GH4, which also, fittingly, is the first ever digital stills camera to offer pro-grade 4K video. In recent years the brand has pitched its DSLR-styled ‘GH’ series as much at video makers as photo enthusiasts, so the latest move expands that appeal. Along with Sony’s 4K equipped AX100E camcorder we reported on last month, the GH4 swells the limited number of devices that can generate fresh content for the latest 4K TV sets and features what its maker is calling an improved 16.05 megapixel CMOS sensor, Venus Engine processor and fast and accurate AF system. Like Olympus’ top end OM-D E-M1, the GH4’s chassis is also said to be rugged, splash proof and dustproof for all shooting conditions, so perfect for travel photographers and those engaging in field work, whilst the GH4 further boasts Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity. Compatibility is promised with the recently introduced Leica DG Nocticron 42.5mm f/1.2 ASPH Power OIS medium telephoto lens, as well as the simultaneously announced SDXC/SDHC UHS-I ‘Gold Series’ media cards with Panasonic branding, said to be a response to market needs for 4K video and available in 16GB, 32GB and 64GB capacity.

ROSKERR Ltd is another of the familiar names exhibiting its wares at The Photography Show, specifically stand N73, where it will be showcasing its Gift Kiosk all-in one plus the Mitsubishi Easy Photo ID70 photo station (shown above). The all-in-one kiosk, available from as little as £150 per month, allows printing from smartphones, features a new 22-inch touch screen display, and provides instant prints, along with unique photo gifts including personalised calendars, albums, frames and cards. Nikon in no danger of losing its Cool(pix) COMPACTS may have lost ground to smartphones but that isn’t deterring Nikon. As if starting the year with 11 new camera announcements (including ‘L and ‘S’ series Coolpixes, plus the D3300 and D4S) wasn’t enough, the premier brand has added to the haul with seven further Coolpix. The latest wave of Nikons include the rugged AW120 (top right), which, aptly enough for the wettest period in the UK for 100 years, is waterproof to 18 metres, shockproof to two metres, freezeproof to -10°C and boasts 16 megapixels, a 5x optical zoom plus 3-inch, 921K-dot OLED screen. SRP is £329.99 and available colours are black, blue, camouflage and orange. The second new point and shoot is the 13 megapixel S32 (in yellow, right), which, in resembling something a toddler might play with in the bath, is being pitched as ‘for all the family, no matter how adventurous life gets’. It is also dustproof, shockproof to 1.5 metres and waterproof to 10 metres. Coming with a

3x optical zoom and 2.7-inch, 230K dot LCD, SRP is £99 with availability in blue, pink, white and yellow. The third new Coolpix is the Wi-Fi enabled P340 (in white, bottom), which is described as ‘quick fire’. With an SRP of £349.99 the 12 megapixel 1/1.7-inch back illuminated CMOS sensor compact offers a 5x optical zoom with bright f/1.8 maximum aperture lens, the ability to shoot Raw, 3-inch, 921K dot screen and is available in black or white. Next up are two further ‘P’ (Performance) series high zoom models in the P530 (SRP £329.99) and P600 (£429.99), both with 16MP CMOS chips. The P600 is a 60x optical offering in black and red including new features such as focus peaking alert, 7fps continuous capture and Full HD video with stereo sound, whilst the P530 boasts a 42x range plus electronic viewfinder. The latter comes only in black. The final two premium Coolpix’s are the S9700 at £329.99 and the S9600 (red, upper left) at £249.99, being 30x

Sony bares its ‘big guns’

The new models go on sale from March. Next up are a couple of bridge cameras in the 50x optical zoom Cybershot HX400V and the 63x H400 – the longest ever lens reach provided in its class. Apart from the mammoth focal range, the HX400V has March availability, a 20.4 megapixel CMOS sensor, Bionz X processor, Zeiss Vario-Sonnar T* lens, tilting 3-inch LCD, EVF, Optical SteadyShot, ‘pro DSLR style’ handling, Wi-Fi and NFC and PlayMemories compatibility. The 63x H400 meanwhile offers a 20.1MP CCD, DSLR styling, a zoom range equivalent to 24.5-1550mm in 35mm terms, and 720P HD video. Availability is from this April. www.sony.co.uk

AS PROMISED by Sony UK’s Head of Digital Imaging Fred Lange last month, Sony has followed up its CES compact announcements with some higher end bridge and high zoom cameras for spring 2014. First up is a new interchangeable lens compact bearing Alpha branding in the A6000, which claims to offer the world’s fastest AF among CSC’s of just 0.06 seconds, as well as being Wi-Fi and NFC enabled. At its heart are a 24.3 megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor and Bionz X processor, whilst compatibility is offered with Sony’s PlayMemories camera apps, and there is both 1.4 million dot EVF and 3-inch tilting LCD. The A6000 is being made available in black and titanium, with accessories for dealers to piggyback on a sale including a ‘just fit’ Body Case in the LCS-EBC, an LCS-ASB1 Active Sling Bag plus LCS-BBXL Soft Carry Case for long lenses. On sale date for the A6000 is April. There are also four new Cyber-shot compact zooms. These are the DSCHX60/HX60V with 20.4 megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, Sony G lens, Bionz X chip, 30x optical zoom,

‘Quattro’ means three for Sigma Have a pop at Olympus One body style, three lens choices of 19mm, 30mm and 50mm

OLYMPUS UK’s promotional activities to drive trade continue a-pace with news that it is opening a ‘pop up’ gallery. And fittingly it’s pop images, or rather rock images, that will fill its walls, courtesy of Rockarchive, the company which sells limited edition rock photography prints run by music photographer Jill Furmanovsky. The Olympus Image Space Gallery at 199 Bishopsgate, London, was due to open its doors on February 20th, and will play host to 50 images claiming to define rock ‘n’ roll, as well as offering visitors the chance to ‘rock out’ themselves with Olympus’ latest generation cameras. SIGMA is another familiar name with new product out this month in the interestingly named and curiously styled ‘dp Quattro’ compact camera. The device incorporates a newly developed 39 megapixel equivalent Foveon X3 sensor – which has been christened ‘Quattro’ – plus a new True III processor. Sigma is once again claiming the unique properties of the chip with its three layers of photodiodes gives a ‘3D feel’ to the images produced, and for its new ‘dp’ series has re-thought and re-designed every aspect of the camera. There are currently three models in the ‘dp’ series, each with a fixed focal length lens integrated into the body. These are the wide-angle dp1 Quattro at 19mm, the standard dp2 Quattro at 30mm and the medium telephoto dp3 Quattro at 50mm – providing the 35mm equivalents of 28mm, 45mm and 75mm respectively. Aperture range is f/2.8 to f16. The unusually elongated and dare one suggest smartphone-like body is, says Sigma, one designed to bring out the best performance from sensor and lens. Availability dates and pricing were still to be decided at the time of writing. In related news Sigma has now confirmed pricing for its new 18-200mm f/3.5-6.3 DC OS HSM lens, which will be a vat-inclusive £349.99. Elinchrom owner Malcolm Whittle remembered BPI News is sad to learn that Malcolm Whittle, founder of Leeds Camera Centre, and subsequently owner of lighting manufacturer Elinchrom, passed away over the Christmas period. A father to five children, including son Chris Whittle who now successfully runs The Flash Centre, for the past 28 years Malcolm had lived in Switzerland, where he re-located following his purchase of Elinchrom. In his time Malcolm helped expand the business to such an extent that the UK became the largest market for Elinchrom flash in the world.

ABC: not quite as easy as 1,2,3

So suggests Pete Davies, owner of Marlborough Photo Services. On upgrading to a new Fujifilm Drylab, Pete tells us how he seized the opportunity to install nine digital signage screens in his busy store…

P

hotographer Pete Davies has been running a photo retail business in picturesque Marlborough for 20 years, starting out with a Noritsu lab providing mini-prints for local estate agents before eventually expanding this service across the whole of the southwest. But technology moved on, estate agents started to manage their printing in house, and Pete decided that he would concentrate instead on retail photo. About three years ago he visited Photokina where he saw the first generation of Fujifilm Dry Labs. He thought then that this was the future of photo printing but had reservations on the quality of the print versus his trusted silver halide printer. Skip forward to Focus 2013 and Pete was again looking at a Fujifilm dry lab. At this point he was glad to see that dry lab technology had progressed to such an extent that print quality was now as good as, if not better than, the wet process he was so used to. Fujifilm was able to show him the new DL650 Dry lab which gave him the volume he needed on 5-inch and 6-inch prints, as well as the flexibility of the 12-inch width he was used to on his ageing Agfa lab. The set up required involved adding three DPC10 kiosks with Fujifilm Imagine software and a wide format printer. Moving out the Agfa printer and his old C41 and E6 processors – despite film orders coming in it had become more economical to farm them out – freed up space for a viewing room as an addition to his studio. It also meant he could have the shop covered all the time. The decision made, the DL650 was purchased in August 2013. Russ Gunn, Fujifilm’s Web Development Manager had also been advising Pete about digital signage solutions, a new service the company launched in 2013 under the name Advanced Digital Solutions.. Having learnt how the addition of regularly managed digital content could really help boost his business, Pete decided on not just buying one large screen but nine separate screens. “I don’t believe that anyone really takes notice of posters. I wanted something that would grab my customers’ attention and a moving image is so much more attractive,” he says. “I put three of the screens in the window and I saw straightaway the impact it had. It markets my business 24 hours a day”. He put another three screens in the main shop and three more behind the counter, all running slightly different content, provided remotely from Fujifilm Head Office by Russ Gunn. He works with Pete on making changes every couple of weeks, so nothing gets too stale. “Look in any large multiple store and you’ll see digital signage everywhere; that’s because it works,” Pete raves. “Since installing the screens I haven’t changed any of my products or pricing and haven’t done any special promotions. Yet I have seen an increase in sales across the board. For instance, my photo mug business has grown by 700% since August. ast week the Audit Bureau of Circulations (ABC) released its latest report on consumer magazine circulation. I’d love to tell you that publishers across the UK had a nail-biting time waiting to learn how their titles had performed, but the truth is that we know our own figures a little in advance. The real fascination, of course, lies in seeing how you have performed in the context of the wider market – which of your competitors have you overtaken? Who has stolen a march on whom? Who must be watched carefully in the coming year? For Future the results make for impressive reading. They show Digital Camera retained the number one best-selling title spot, a position claimed for the first time in 2012. They also reveal N-Photo, our Nikon-only title, is the fastest-growing in the sector and has secured third place overall – not bad for a title that only marked its second full year of publication last October. PhotoPlus, our Canon-only title, completes our triumphant troika by pipping Practical Photography to fourth place, giving Future an unprecedented three of the top four titles in the process. But these figures don’t tell the full story of the seismic shift that has occurred in the photography magazine market. Shorn of historical context the latest data merely reaffirms that Future is now the market-leading publisher of photography titles. What it singularly fails to do is reveal the fundamental changes that have taken place since 2000. Incredibly, Future had no presence in this market at the turn of the century. Back then, Emap (now Bauer) ruled the roost with Practical Photography and IPC’s Amateur Photographer was shifting over 30,000 copies per week. How times have changed. Since 2000, sales of both titles have fallen dramatically (by 63 and 44 percent respectively) and it would not be controversial to suggest that readers have migrated to Future titles. How has Future managed to become the market-leading publisher in such a short space of time and from a standing start? I think the answer is simple. At Future we focus relentlessly on the needs of our users and intensely monitor changes in the photography market. We understand that the combination of fast-evolving technology and individual creativity that drives the photography market will lead to continual change and we’ve positioned ourselves to respond to those changes accordingly. Our offerings therefore encompass print, web, tablets, smartphones, video, events and social media. So what the ABC figures don’t reveal is the amount of time and effort we invest in building audiences across all these different channels and how intently we listen to those audiences. What’s more, we’ll continue to listen and focus on the needs of photographers so that the next time the market changes, and I promise you it will, we’ll be ready to react.

Olympus unleashes ‘Big Dog’ at The Photography Show The manufacturer is rolling out its ‘big two’ – the new OM-D E-M10, plus photographer ambassador Damian McGillicuddy – on a brand new swanky stand to deliver a knockout to customers visiting the exhibition…

V

isitors to The Photography Show will notice quite a change when comparing Olympus’ modest stand from last year’s Focus on Imaging to 2014’s all singing, all dancing effort, as shown here. In a BPI News exclusive, it looks like the brand has re-discovered its mojo, and that may well be due in part to the snazzy new E-M10, its entry level OM-D, as previewed in BPI February. Olympus will be hosting speakers and seminars on its stand this year, and will be running two timetables: one for seminars and another for onstage shoots. The stand itself is split into two zones: a seminar area and a live ‘experiential’ zone. The latter is where visitors can come along meet the Olympus team, and get handson with the OM-D E-M10. This will be the first opportunity for most to see the new camera and put it through its paces. With an array of photographic opportunities all day long, from contortionists to freestyle footballing, visitors are promised that they will have plenty to shoot. Olympus’s principal photo ambassador Damian McGillicuddy and his team will also be working on the stand, so make time to join him his live shoots are not to be missed! Up to five seminars are being run each day. All the seminars are free, but numbers are limited so visitors need to pick up a ticket from the Olympus stand to reserve their place. The seminar speakers cover a whole range of photographic genres, from rock music to landscapes. In addition Damian McGillicuddy will also be appearing on the Photography Show’s own Live Stage, talking about his experience of shooting professionally with the OM-D range and conducting live portrait and beauty shoots. In fact he opens the whole show with the first session on the Live stage – on Saturday March 1st at 11.00am. Further sessions follow on Monday 3rd at 11.00 and Tuesday 4th at 15.00. fter a comparatively quiet start to the year with three stills cameras announced to coincide with PMA@CES (along with three Legria camcorders and two Selphy printers), Canon has stepped up the pace in time for a show-stopping performance at the NEC where it will be ‘bringing photography to life’ (See also News item opposite for its stand events). Nine additional models were announced mid February – including the expected DSLR and bridge models absent from the first wave of launches. The new entry level EOS is the 18 megapixel EOS 1200D, purportedly designed for first time DSLR owners who want to see results straight out of the box, and to have a DSLR they can transport with ease. There are three available configurations: body only for £349.99 SRP, £399.99 with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 DCIII lens, or £449.99 with EF-S 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 IS II lens. Availability is this March, and an EOS Companion app for mobile devices is being launched in tandem. If however your customers are looking for a compact that delivers DSLR-like quality and shallow depth of field, then direct them to the successor to the G1 X in the PowerShot G1 X Mark II, which its maker promises delivers ‘the best imaging performance ever seen in a Canon compact camera’. The ‘action camera’ market hasn’t been forgotten either, and new for this segment is the PowerShot D30 (in blue, right) which its maker is claiming as the ‘world’s deepest compact camera’ in that it can operate at depths of 25 metres. Out in April in time for the all important holiday sales season, the SRP is £299. The fourth new release is what Canon describes as its slimmest ever 30x optical zoom camera in the PowerShot SX700 HS, at just 34.8mm in depth and with a lens that offers the equivalent of 25mm at its

widest angle. On sale in March, SRP is £329. The PowerShot S series also gets a new model in the PowerShot S200, featuring an ultra wide and bright f/2 lens aperture and a higher sensitivity 10.1 megapixel CCD sensor. It’s priced at a suggested £279 from May. Finally there is a pocket-sized trio of affordable IXUS cameras: the IXUS 155, IXUS 150 and IXUS 145, costing £129, 109 and £99 respectively. The 155 model features 10x optical zoom and 20 megapixel sensor, whilst the entry level 150 and 145 each boast a 16 megapixel sensor and 8x optical zoom. Making plans with Nigel Visiting The Photography Show on the Monday? Then head to the PMA UK Conference, which starts at 10.15 in Gallery Room 21 at the NEC next to Hall 11 and 12 where the main event is taking place. Nigel McNaught tells us why you need to be there

T

o consult, to discuss, to put heads together. These are just a few of the words the reference books say we can use in place of ‘to confer’. So, as the 2014 PMA Conference, which takes place on Monday 3rd March 2014 as part of The Photography Show at the NEC, draws near, let me try and answer two important questions: Why should you go? What can you achieve there? Having started with that definition of ‘confer’ it is worth noting that no definition of confer says ‘sit back and be talked at’. Conferences, certainly PMA ones, are places to learn. Not so much about new products but about the business benefits that the new products bring. And the best way to learn is to talk with your peers about what works and what doesn’t. You don’t have to give away commercial gems but when you share your experiences you get something in return. But perhaps this is running before walking. The first thing the conference will do is put our industry in context. A member of the Futurology Group will give his thoughts about retailing in niche markets and consumer behaviour patterns as we approach the second half of the decade that has already brought many surprises, not least in terms of the speed of change. We have all had the phrase ‘multi channel retailing’ thrust at us, yet I still hear retailers declare: “that’s all right for the big boys, but I can’t offer it”. Can not or will not? Have you ever stopped to recognise the things you can do that the big boys can’t do? Multi channel does not stop at facebook, Twitter and transactional web sites. Let me introduce to you a new marketing channel that you probably would not have included in your multi channel list: Education. “That’s not a channel!” I hear you say. Of course it is. I will define channel marketing as “any action

Marketing to niche markets is all about finding those unique channels and we are fortunate that photography gives customers the opportunity to be creative and industrious and to bring out their ideas, as well as benefiting from being shown or educated in how to take better pictures. And the photo specialist retailer is well placed to drive that message home with

activity in store and outside. Have you ever run a photo safari in your home town, and got a local historian involved and a pro photographer to walk round with you? In some markets such as Australia they do this regularly. Try it, I promise you will be amazed at the take up. So, after the Futurologist at the conference has give his view of the shape of things to come, it is the turn of Brian Hall of Experience Seminars to show you how, with

Education, you can capitalise on the rising importance for the hobbyist, the prosumer or just the good old amateur. Did you do Latin at school? The word ‘amateur’ comes from the Latin word ‘amo’, I love. The amateur does things because he or she loves doing them. Will there ever be a better market or a better time to approach them? So our conference can set the scene and identify a prime way to enthuse the customer, but they will need to understand what they are being offered. We need marketing, finding what turns them on and letting them know we can provide it. And who better to give marketing ideas than industry guru Bill McCurry? Bill will get you to recognise and share marketing ideas that you never thought you had. If you have never been to a session with Bill then you are in for a real treat. And so sure am I that you will come away from Bill’s session with at least three new and good ideas, that if you don’t I will give you your money back! The conference finishes with Richard Gregory of GfK Marketing Services. Richard Is one of those rare market analysts who not only presents the numbers but looks at what they mean in terms of who is buying what, how often and for how much. And there will be plenty of opportunity for questions. So to your two questions: Why should you attend? To learn about the new markets and how to approach them. What can you achieve? Fuji X-T-atic about premium CSC prospects

F

or dealers looking to get hands on with the hottest new kit, Fuji will be exhibiting both its range of cameras and D&P solutions at the inaugural The Photography Show this month. And, following on from our Feb issue teaser, the veil of secrecy has been lifted from the manufacturer’s new high-end X model, revealed as the X-T1. Described as a premium interchangeable lens camera with DSLR style handling, mechanical dials and boasting weather resistance, stock should be available when you read this. The pitch includes the fact that its ‘immersive’ electronic viewfinder is so highly specified – with the world’s highest magnification at 0.77x for a digital camera – that Fuji claims performance is virtually indistinguishable from an optical finder. SRP is £1099.99 body only or £1449.99 with XF18-55mm zoom lens. Accessories to piggyback on sales include a vertical battery grip at £199.99 which can house an additional NP-W126 battery, an all-leather half case at £99.99, plus a metal hand grip at £129.99, the base of which is equipped with rails for use with a quick-release plate. The manufacturer has also announced availability for a trio of weather resistant compatible lenses. The XF18-135mmF3.5-5.6 R OIS WR will arrive in June this year, with the XF16-55mmF2.8 R OIS WR and XF50-140mmF2.8 R OIS WR following in ‘winter 2014’. We grabbed Fuji’s Senior’s Business Manager Theo Georghiades to give us the lowdown from the trade perspective. “The X-T1’s key features for us are the real time viewfinder, its tough, weather resistant design and its advanced Wi-

The same app also now offers remote shooting.” Asked whether retailers should be pitching the X-T1 to their customers as a true DSLR alternative, Theo’s reply is: “Absolutely. It’s a compact and lightweight alternative without any compromise in image quality.” He also adds that the brand is expecting a wider range of customers to be interested in the new model than just

its current X series converts. “We’ve pushed the boundaries in terms of speed with the introduction of UHS II card compatibility and high speed subject predictive AF. Combined with the wider range of lenses we’ll offer this year, we’ll attract sports, wildlife and high speed action photographers.” All the recent activity centering on the X series begs the question as to whether Fujifilm has now largely forgotten about point and shoot snapshots in favour of the higher end? “We still offer a broad range

of cameras, including tough XP cameras, S series long zoom bridge cameras, some entry-level compacts and the premium X series,” replies Theo. “But the focus of our range has evolved over the last few years and does now centre on our higher end X series cameras. This is a reflection of changes in consumer demand and the infiltration of smartphones and tablets into our daily lives. Fujifilm is proud to have returned to its roots as a true photographic brand and is thrilled to be engaging with professional and enthusiast photographers once again.” This begs the question as to what, from its unique perspective, Fujifilm perceives as the industry trends right now? “There’s a lot of discussion about APS-C versus full frame and there are strong benefits to both types of sensors. We’re always looking to improve our sensor technologies, as this is key to improving image quality. Other tech trends we’ve studied are touch screen, tethered shooting, design, and of course pushing the boundaries of our Fujinon glass. “Fujifilm continues to listen to users’ feedback, with the goal of ultimately exceeding customers’ expectations where possible. An example of this is the recently announced firmware update for the X100 in Jan. The camera had already been in the market for quite a while, but we wanted to continue to make improvements and ensure greater longevity of use for our customers.” And in terms of dealer promotions at The Photography Show, Theo divulges that: “We will be supporting Cameraworld, Calumet and London Camera Exchange with some very keen deals across our range of X-Series compacts and CSC’s.” Pay Fujifilm itself a visit on stand Stand D10, Hall 12. www.fujifilm.co.uk

Of all the filters on test here, Formatt Hi Tech’s square Pro Stop 10 suffered from the most noticeable increase in vignetting from the control image. This is, of course, a relative statement – the increase was still very marginal and is unlikely to have a real adverse effect on a shot, but it is worth noting. Formatt claims that rigorous spectrographic testing has been used to improve the colour neutrality of the Pro Stop, and this extra work seems to have paid off, with some cooling of the image but a generally mild result. Providing an additional 9 stops of exposure, the Hoya NDX400 is slightly less powerful than the other filters on test here. Available in a wide range of sizes from 49mm to 82mm, this filter is part of the HMC (Hoya Multi Coated) range, which features a three-layer coating system designed to minimise reflection and thus reduce flare and ghosting. Hoya also claims that this will help colour neutrality. This seems to be the case, as the NDX400 produced an image that was a little cooler in colour temperature than the control, but overall was pleasingly neutral with little vignetting. For those who don’t think their photography will quite require the full 10 stops, the NDX400 will suit admirably.

he Bafta-winning 12 Years a Slave, Skyfall, Red 2, A Good Day to Die Hard, Prometheus, War Horse and Kick Ass 2 – all movies that have made use of Tiffen Filters. In fact, some of them could not have been filmed without the use of Tiffen’s Emmy award winning IRND (Infra-Red Neutral Density) technology. But the exciting news is that this filter technology has now trickled down to its photographic and HD customers. ‘Hot off the press’ IRND and IRVND (I.R. This 10-stop filter comes hot off the manufacturing line from Tiffen, having been released at the end of May. Tiffen has an excellent reputation when it comes to filter technology, having won multiple awards for its technical achievements. Appropriately enough, the ND 3.0 is very good indeed. There was a little warming of the image compared to the control, but the end result was pleasingly neutral. There was also barely any increase in vignetting from the control image that we observed. This is the most well-balanced of the products on test, and if you’re looking for a circular filter you won’t go far wrong. Definitely recommended.

techniques: the use of slower shutter speeds and therefore long exposures to blur movement, plus the use of a faster aperture to create shallower depth of field. “Neutral Density as a category is vast – it’s not just about stopping down light,” Daniel elaborates. “It’s about the creativity that Neutral Density control offers a photographer. Just about every

magazine has tips and tricks in how to use this filter to create different looks in varying lighting environments. Neutral Density filters more than ever are becoming a must have for all types of photographers. With so many different types of ND available, knowing which product suits what purpose has never been so important. The basic ND 0.3, 0.6 and 0.9 represent the different

strengths of Neutral Density, with 0.3 (1 stop) being the lowest in relation to stops of light.” Tiffen’s Variable Neutral Density filter, designed primarily as a one size fits all photographic tool for controlling light, provides 2 to 8 stops of control. It operates on the same principle as a Circular Polarizer – rotate until you reach your desired effect and shoot. “It’s more flexible than the standard Neutral Density filter and works in a slightly different way. It’s polarised glass back to back, as opposed to a Neutral Density which is a purpose built grey tinted filter,” Daniel elaborates. “Because you can rotate the Variable Neutral Density filter, it ‘dials in’ the amount of f-stops that you require rather than having to change the filter. That is very cool.”

Making light work Tiffen believes that its aforementioned IRND technology will also be key for the trade going forward, claiming that the IRND 3.0 and IRVND cut out a lot of the infra-red light pollution issues that certain cameras suffer from because of their sensor’s inherent sensitivity. “A lot of people are throwing very strong ND’s on to high sensitivity CMOS sensors. What that is doing, is allowing Far Red and infra red light waves to be recorded onto the image. Photographers are confused by a muddy magenta contamination on the image. This is a wellknown issue in the motion picture industry with CMOS camera sensor technology. What we like to do at Tiffen is create the tools to combat those issues, and we can use our knowledge in the motion picture industry to adapt our technology into the ring filters for digital cameras.” With Tiffen a serious and knowledgeable player in the field of neutral density filters, retailers who want to expand their offerings and attract greater custom should head over to the Cameraworld stand at The Photography Show to seek out Daniel and his Tiffen team for more.

Kenro promises ‘plenty to see’ at The Photography Show

ith the Exeter Giving & Living Show and the NEC Spring Fair already successfully crossed off its 2014 trade show diary, Kenro is gearing up for ‘the big one’ of The Photography Show. The UK distributor of Benro, Braun, Marumi, Nissin and Reflecta will be using the occasion to unveil a host of new kit to the trade. But BPI News has been able to grab this sneak preview. “We’re optimistic it’s going to be a good year,” says Kenro MD Paul Kench. “The economy appears to be picking up, and we have worked hard to make sure that we’re in the position of having the right type of products to help our re-sellers take advantage of that.”

Benro tripods & bags A case in point is the first new product that Paul wishes to flag up to the trade: a high-end Benro Video Tripod kit, an addition to the three models – sporting S2, S4 and S6 heads – launched last year, which have proved very successful for the distributor and its retailers. The new S8 head kit is both larger than its predecessors, can cope with 8kg of weight, and the legs are made of carbon fibre rather than aluminium. Who should you be pitching it to? Photographers and videographers along with bird watchers advises Paul. SRP is £756. “This model sells well for Benro in a number of countries so we’ve decided to launch it in the UK, starting with The Photography Show. Benro tripods are precision engineered with the highest quality materials, and have achieved a sizeable market share in China along with a number of countries worldwide. Price-wise, compared to the leading brands they work out better value and there is also more opportunity for the dealer to make a good margin on sales.” When pitching them to your customers don’t forget to mention that all Benro tripods come with a five-year warranty.

The new Di600 (below) claims the same great feature set as its predecessor, but at a better price point, meaning great value for those in the market for a versatile flash gun for their DSLR. The Di600 will generally retail around the £120 mark. Focal Length and auto zoom range is from 24 to 105mm, with an output of GN44 (m) ISO 100 at 105mm. It features a bounce/swivel head design that swivels 90° to the left, 180° right and 90° up, for bouncing light off a ceiling. A 16mm wide-angle diffuser comes built in, together with a fill-in reflector. Alternatively the next step up is the higher spec Di700, which generally retails around £160.

Marumi Exus filters & Braun binos You may already be aware of the Marumi Exus Lens Protect and Circular Polariser, to which has newly been added the Exus UV. This has the same oil and water repellant qualities as the rest of the Exus range. “Exus are Marumi’s flagship, top-of-therange filters,” Paul explains of the made-in-Japan products. “Marumi filters are connoisseur quality and the main thing about them is that they have water and oil repellent coating. If any water gets on, it forms droplets and easily comes off, instead of smearing. As well as being easy to clean, the filter also has an anti static coating and so doesn’t attract dust.” The Marumi Exus comes in the following 13 sizes: 37mm, 40.5mm, 43mm, 46mm, 49mm, 52mm, 55mm, 58mm, 62mm, 67mm, 72mm, 77mm and 82mm. As we have previously flagged up in BPI News, Kenro has been handling the Braun range of products since August last year, with popular items including digital photo frames as well as its extensive range of own brand binoculars. “We’ve found people have been re-familiarising themselves with the Braun range, and in particular the Braun binoculars are really good quality. The digital frames such as the 8-inch and 10-inch also did well over Christmas for us. Again the range is comprehensive and there is little competition. The specification of digital frames are good, they incorporate latest LED technology and are all compatible with SDHC cards.”

Bergamo multi aperture frames Kenro’s new multi aperture Bergamo frames have space to display six pictures. Double picture mats allow two sizes of photos to be used, and the series is manufactured in wood with a high gloss lacquer finish in either brilliant white or black. High quality plastic fronts rather than glass keeps the series lightweight, and stock is available now, with SRPs ranging from £27.60 to £67.88 inc VAT. “A lot of mini labs and camera shops have got a studio in them these days, so this new range is proving popular with them, as well as with other retailers,” reveals Kenro’s MD. “The very modern, minimalist look has received some very positive feedback and we’ll have them on display on our stand at The Photography Show. Retailers can always make a very good margin on frames.”

Reflecta lighting kits Further new Kenro releases include three Reflecta kits, of which the newest is the VisiLux studio 300 flash kit. This option comes with two 300-watt flash heads, two umbrellas, two softboxes, two light stands and a wireless remote in a carry case ‘ready to go’. It’s being pitched at enthusiasts and semi pros. The entry-level option meanwhile is the Reflecta VisiLux studio flash kit 180, designed for either the serious hobbyist. It features step-less light adjustment from full power down to 1/32nd and is supplied with three 180 watt compact flash heads, stands extendable up to 220cm, plus a full range of accessories. These include three different light modifiers, a 50x70cm softbox with intermediate diffuser, an 84cm white translucent umbrella and same size silver umbrella, plus a radio trigger and carry case. The alternative is the

Reflecta RPL 306 LED studio lighting kit – another two head option, here providing soft light ideal for use in a small studio or outdoors in unfavourable conditions. Named after the number of LED lights in each unit, the heads feature dimmable LEDs which are not only cool running but also consume less power than conventional studio lights.

amsung’s new NX30 is our nomination for March’s Product of the Month precisely because it would seem to tick just about every box for the features most desired of a CSC in 2014. Touch screen display that also tilts and swivels? Check. Wi-Fi and NFC connectivity? Check. Digital filter effects plus myriad customisable controls? Check. High resolution APS-C CMOS sensor? Check. Eye-level electronic viewfinder with 2.3 million dot resolution? Check. Eye-level electronic viewfinder that also pulls out and tilts upwards so the NX30 can be operated in a similar fashion to a medium format camera? Check and check again… Then there’s also the fact that the NX30, like competitors in Panasonic’s GH series, resembles a DSLR that’s been miniaturised. So pick it up and there’s much that immediately feels familiar. Indeed the control layout falls in between point and shoot and DSLR territory, so we get ease of use too. However, as indicated, there are plenty of options to tweak the camera’s functions to match your way of working, without even mentioning the fact that the NX30 comes supplied out of the box with an iFunction enabled 18-55mm lens for £899 SRP. So camera functions can also be implemented and operated via the lens itself if the user so chooses. With plenty to play with there

is scant chance of any enthusiast getting bored with the NX30.Yet at the same time, it’s precisely because of the touch screen controls, chunky accompanying physical buttons, and the likes of eye sensors incorporated into the viewfinder that you’re freed up to concentrate on the image before the lens, not what the camera is doing. Aside from looking the part the NX30 feels it too. This is thanks to a large, rubber padded handgrip and curved thumb rest at the back. Even with lens left attached, it’s light enough to slip into a messenger bag, and so we found ourselves more likely to take it out for the day than a fully blown DSLR. A battery life of around 350 shots, whilst no match for a semi pro DSLR, is nevertheless still right up there with the best in its CSC class. On the camera’s rear screen our shots looked stunning – and on our desktop they looked, well, pretty good nonetheless, with the kit lens maintaining detail edge-to-edge. Even if we did encounter a little pixel fringing in places, the beauty with the NX30 is that its colourful, evenly exposed shots require little if any adjustment straight out of the camera. So for those customers who appreciate a traditional DLR-type feel, but a lightweight body crammed with the very latest tech, the Samsung comes highly recommended. www.samsung.co.uk

ring along some images on a memory card and have them printed out,” is the advice to trade visitors from Jurie Gryffenberg, Senior Business Development Manager of Dai Nippon Printers’ UK distributor, Photomart, who will be showcasing DNP’s wealth of mini lab solutions – including the standalone SnapLab print kiosk, on its stand at The Photography Show. Also present will be events photographer Mike Weeks of the Event Photographers Society, who will be demo-ing the DNP printers, whilst there will also be ‘steam punk’ themed shooting sessions to grab punters’ attention. “Think Jules Verne meets The Terminator,” advises Jurie, recommending members of the trade who may be scratching their heads at this point to swot up by watching steam punk-inspired movies including Will Smith’s Wild, Wild West or The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen. “We’ll also have exciting show offers and will be giving away DNP’s Party Print software half price with every DS series printer sold; either that or a free flying case,” continues Photomart’s Jurie, who will additionally be pushing its iLux lighting kits at the show. Whilst the Party Print application allows customers to print direct from smartphones, in terms of DNP kit to examine and try out for yourselves, expect to find models including the DS40, DS80, DS-RX1 and DS-SL20 (SnapLab) present and correct on stand K30. For those not already in the know, but who are thinking of bolting a mini lab onto their existing business model, the DS40 is a six-inch photo printer that has been honoured three years in a row with a DIMA Award, delivering 10x15cm prints on either glossy or matt media in just eight seconds. It can also produce 2x6-inch ID photo strips if latest firmware is installed. The DS80 meanwhile is an 8-inch photo printer, with again the ability to use glossy and matt consumables and boasting print sizes ranging from 4x8-inch to 8x12inch. Sitting in the middle is the DS-RX1, another six inch photo printer which is described as an affordable investment with very economic consummables. It delivers prints in 10x15, 13x18 and 15x20, on matt or glossy surface, in a resolution ranging from 300x300 to 300x600dpi. As it sounds the swanky DS-SL20 SnapLab is an all-in-one photo kiosk which is perfect for any retail environment, in offering an easy to use customer interface. The benefit to your business is a good source of income without needing to compromise on store space. The DS80 can be added to the set up to extend your range of print options. A wireless remote release and eyecatching cabinet are optional extras with the SnapLab. Kodak Moments App set to expand retailers’ customer base

onventional wisdom might suggest the smartphone photographer is uninterested in printing but what they are interested in is convenience. So, if we can make printing images convenient, problem solved, right? That’s the theory behind those companies with both a historical and current interest in the printed image launching themselves into the new multi channel, multi platform retail environment with some interesting and enticing solutions. Building on its consumer focused personalised photo product range, Kodak Alaris is presenting Kodak Moments App a new suite of functions that makes it even easier to create and pick up personalised photo products from participating stores or kiosks (See also the interview with Kodak Alaris MD Lee Palmer in BPI News Dec/Jan). Consumers can download the free app for both Android and iOS devices, in addition to Facebook. There is also an update to the photobook creation software, Create@Home, developed to enable consumers with a quick and easy solution to create and print photo products. The Kodak Moments App suite comes as a direct response to changing consumer needs: busier lifestyles and an increase in demand for mobile compatible solutions. The app means it is now easier than ever to create and print photos straight from a multitude of devices, including mobile, social media and computers.

Retailer of choice Thanks to the smartphone app suite, photos can be selected from any iOS or Android device, and with a few simple clicks, anyone can create a personalised photo product anywhere, anytime. Consumers are able to send their finished creation to a preferred retailer based on location and product fulfilment capability. Once an e-mail confirmation code has been sent, this is then presented to the retailer or keyed into a kiosk to receive the photo product. In other words, the app is driving footfall to your store.
