don’t care if Monday’s black, Tuesday, Wednesday heart attack, Thursday never looking back, ‘cos Black Friday I’m in love. Not my words but those of the poet Robert Smith. Sort of. Yes it’s the month when photo specialists, manufacturers and suppliers alike attempt to win as much custom as they normally do at Christmas, as consumers expect bargains to be dangled in front of their eyes like jewels from Tiffany & Co. I don’t know about you, but in recent years I’ve felt some of the frisson of excitement that used to accompany Black Friday slipping away. The onetime full-scale riots at the tills have given way to quiet acceptance. Maybe we’ve just become over familiar. The element of surprise is gone and we’re going through the motions expected of us. Most of the action only happens online. So this issue, on page 20, we’ve sought counsel. Attempted to put

Mark Hoskins of MAC Group Europe advises us on the benefits of a funky looking travel tripod that’s apparently selling out as soon as dealers get hold of it, while we hear pre-orders have similarly been strong for Sigma’s new 10-18mm lens, featured on page 10. Transcontinenta UK’s distributed brand Cullmann from Germany offers a true one-stop shop in terms of accessories, British firm Rotolight has an innovative new LED with which to dazzle photographers, filmmakers and their subjects, while, for those looking to print, Hahnemühle has four new papers, including one that is 100% recyclable with our household waste. In news, we’ve details of an ambitious new photo show seeking to develop into something of an annual festival of photography (see ad opposite), an instant print camera from Leica, a new toughened compact from the former Olympus, bucking the trend of others to exit that market, along with accessories galore to boost autumn sales. NEW LOOK FOR FUJIFILM ON HIGH STREET AS PARTNER CONFERENCE BOOSTS POTENTIAL Fujifilm has begun work on re-branding each of its 150 independent retail partners, which it is calling one of the biggest transformations in the photo industry as regards the high street. As part of the ‘PHOTO by Fujifilm’ launch, the stores will be fitted with bespoke signage, including putting the shop name front and centre of the new branding. “We understand the importance placing photography at the heart of local communities can have, which is why we continue to invest in our independent retail partners,” explains Fujifilm UK’s General Manager of Imaging Solutions, Theo Georghiades. “Photography remains an inspiration in our daily lives, and we are finding there is a greater desire than ever to have physical photo prints, whether taken on a smartphone or digital camera.

“Launching PHOTO by Fujifilm allows us to celebrate the artistry of our independent retailers while establishing a consistent nationwide service that customers can trust. We cannot wait to see the signage appear up and down the UK’s high streets.” In related news, the manufacturer held its annual Independent Retail Partner Conference last month, for which the 2023 location was Edinburgh. Held over two days and bringing together 50 businesses, the gathering was with the purpose of highlighting upcoming

opportunities – including the re-branding news directly above. Attendees were able to get hands-on with the PHOTO by Fujifilm Kiosk, Fujifilm Easy Print software and Scribbler Lite technology, all previously covered in BPI News. Retailers also heard from Marlborough Photo Services owner Pete Davies, the first independent retail partner to install the Scribbler Lite on his premises. “With competition tougher than ever, we wanted to sure we showed how Fujifilm’s offering is growing,” adds Fujifilm UK’s Theo. “We are now looking forward to seeing our partners continue to grow, taking lessons from the experience into their high street operations.” Ten awards were also handed out to retailers at the event. Business of the Year went to McGlaughlin’s Pharmacy, while Click Click took the Outstanding Business Achievement Award. Outstanding Contribution to Independent Photo Retail went to the aforementioned Pete Davies from Marlborough Photo, the Fujifilm Fidelity Award was given to Footeprints, and Bann Stationers took the Best Newcomer Award. Business Transformation of the Year was awarded to 21 Studio, and finally the Business Endeavour Award went to H Shackleton Photographic, Greens Photo Centre, Market Hill Photography and Cambrian Photo. CANON’S NEW MIRRORLESS LENSES WORTH LOOKING INTO The photo giant has announced four new lenses for its EOS R series mirrorless range, currently in its fifth year, plus one accessory. These include what it calls the world’s widest zoom with AF for full frame cameras in the RF 10-20mm f/4 L IS STM lens (right). It’s not only the widest full frame lens on the market at the time of writing, which makes it ideal for shooting landscapes, architecture and interiors, it joins an existing line up of 14 compatible Canon camera bodies and 35 RF lenses so far (barring these new additions). Offering 130° coverage and a constant f/4 maximum aperture throughout its zoom range, a new image stabilisation feature debuts in ‘Control IS’, which we’re told is to correct peripheral motion blur for both stills and video. It’s also Canon’s first premium ‘L’ series lens to feature a STM motor, to make it faster than the existing 11-24mm EF lens, while also providing a smoother AF performance for video. Weighing 570g, it’s smaller and lighter than the 11-24mm EF lens, which its manufacturer is keen to point out makes a massive difference, its built-in image stabilisation boasting a five stop equivalence. Aimed at pros, the lens went on sale at the end of last month, at a suggested £3029.99.

Newer still, with sales projected to start December, is the RF 200-800mm f/6.3-9 IS USM lens (above). Canon describes this as the world’s first super telephoto zoom up to 800mm that will let enthusiasts get images they weren’t able to before. It’s not a premium ‘L’ series lens, which the manufacturer says makes it affordable and ideal for wildlife and outdoor sports. It also tells us that 1.4x and 2x extenders

can be used with this lens if wished without compromising AF performance. Users can get as close as 0.8m at 200mm setting or 3.3 metres at 800mm. With 5.5 stops of image stabilisation built in, it’s compact and relatively lightweight at just over 2Kg. Weather sealed, Canon says its white paint finish also dissipates heat. With two AF stop buttons, users can control how fast or slow they want to go via zoom ring torque adjustment. Constructed from 17 elements in 11 groups, it can be used with the likes of the EOS R7, R6 II, R3 or R5 and will cost £2,299.99. Also arriving December at a more affordable £379.99 price tag is the RF-S 10-18mm f/4.5-6.3 IS STM (right), described as the widest option in the RF-S range. Pitched as the RF-S version of its popular EF-S lens, but capable of delivering better quality with it, this is a compact and lightweight (at 150g) ultra-wide angle lens great for travel, landscapes and vlogging. Offering up to 6 stops of stabilisation when used with IBIS, its build comprises 12 elements in 10 groups, plus it features two UD lens elements and a combined focus/control ring. The fourth new lens to be announced this month is the RF 24-105mm f/2.8L IS USM Z (below), with the ‘Z’ denoting ‘Power Zoom’. This is the first of a new ‘Hybrid’ line-up of lenses said to be ‘all

about the hybrid age and shooting photo and video without compromise’. Canon also tell us that both photographers and videographers have been asking for this lens – as it allows most events, including weddings, to be covered with just the one optic – and suggested pairing it with the EOS R5 C body. Offering 5.5 stops of image stabilisation, or a whopping 8 stops with an IBIS enabled camera body, the lens itself features a 23 elements in 18 groups construction. We’re told the design and Dual Nano USM motor helps suppress focus breathing while two lens function buttons and an aperture ring also feature, the latter for use in video mode. It’ll also arrive this December at £3,439.99. Finally, there’s a new Canon Power Zoom adapter (left), due to arrive next March at the time of writing. Two versions are being offered: a PZ-EZ featuring a USB type-C port and offering compatibility with just the 24-105mm lens for now, primarily for shooting video, with the alternative being the PZ-EZ B, offering USB type-C port plus 20-pin connection. Priced at £1,149.99 and £1,749.99 respectively, power comes courtesy of the RF mount or USB-C and there’s a manual-to-servo switch on the side. Essentially the power zoom control allows for a button press to immediately go wide, or alternatively go to telephoto setting, as desired. We’ll have more details as they emerge. www.canon.co.uk

CLICK LIVE PROMISES NEW ‘FESTIVAL OF PHOTOGRAPHY’ There’s a new contender on the photo show calendar for 2024. The brainchild of The Click Group photo studio network CEO Charlie Kaufman (pictured), perhaps most familiar to attendees of The Societies Trade Show and TPS for his Click Backdrops business, Click Live is ambitiously aiming to attract a younger audience than existing UK events, with a view to eventually growing into a ‘Click Fest’ Glastonbury style festival of photography by the summer of 2026. With the initial draw for amateur, enthusiast and pro photographer attendees being education and high profile speakers, the plan is that this isn’t a show that will shut its doors come teatime, but hold events late into the evening, providing ticket holders with the opportunity to socialise and network. There will also be 15 specially created shooting bays (‘Portfolio Pods’) at the show, for those who want to get hands-

on, a Click Live Photographer of the Year competition launched at the inaugural event, plus photo walks through more than 200 acres of ancient woodland. Inspired by photo shows in the US and Europe, such as SPAC, Charlie is dubbing

his event “the exhibitor’s exhibition” as, he adds: “we’re the only show that pays the exhibitor to market the event”. He explains that those booking a stand will get a rebate on the price for every booking they help secure (see the advert on page 2 of this issue for further details). With, we believe, 60% of space at the initial show already snapped up via word of mouth and personal contacts, Kaufman is confident more big name manufacturers will get on board as the buzz grows. n challenging times it can pay dividends to put your trust in a distributor with a longer track record than most. Industry veteran Frazer Allen, well known to BPI News readers for his 50 years in the trade, has plenty of innovative new products that photo and video specialists will quickly want to add to stock. Having founded Alpha Optical Distribution Ltd 15 years ago, we’ll be well aware of Frazer’s long-standing distribution of Visible Dust sensor cleaners. But for those dealers prepared to think outside the box and stock complementary products, Kite Optics – and particularly its innovative new image stabilised binoculars – is another essential. lens and a powerful magnification to its image stabilised 42mm objective models – the Kite APC Stabilised 42 – of which Frazer tells us the 16x magnification outsells everything else. Alternatively there’s the 12x42 model. Developed and designed in Belgium, this bino promises stabilisation as never seen before, making it ideal for birdwatchers and allowing for the highest magnifications without the slightest image vibration. The APC 42 (the ‘APC’ denoting Angle, Power and Control) is also waterproof to an IPX7 rating meaning it can withstand being submerged to one metre for 30 minutes. It’s gas filled to prevent fogging too. Incredibly, despite the ‘military grade’ image stabilisation provided, the APC 42 lays claim to being one of the lightest 42mm stabilized binos ever made (A without-batteries 720g for the 12x42 or 735g for the 16x42). Another innovation is up to 120 hours battery life, courtesy of two battery boxes – one containing the two AAs actively required for power, while the second battery box houses two spare AAs for swapping over after the first 60 hours of use. As a power saver when the binocular is not in use, the stabilizing electronics are put into sleep mode, automatically activating again once observation starts. SRPs are £1049 for the

12x42 or £1099 for the 16x42 model. More affordable are the Kite 10x30 and 12x30 APC stabilised binoculars. Again, while there are other image-stabilised binoculars on the market, these are a cut above. New technology corrects image stability by 3°, or 5.3 metres at a distance of 100 metres; 6x more than most rival brands. This allows for perfectly stable images if the user has trembling hands, or from a moving car or a boat in strong seas. Power comes via 2x AA batteries that last for up to 36 hours, with the device putting itself into sleep mode when not in use. Ergonomically designed with a 4cm long focus wheel, optical performance is said to match the Kite Petrel. Add-on sales can be achieved via protective silicone jackets available in black, blue, green or orange for 12x42 and 16x42 models. the same buying power as larger retail groups and online marketplaces. With a focus on sales through the optics and photographic market with nature viewing in mind, the product will not be offered to the guns and weapons market. In short, as there is no wish to see the products promoted through the large reselling sites, independents have a level playing field on which to compete while offering an exceptional product. The 8x32 model weighs just 510g, offers a field of view of 131°, a 17.8mm eye relief and impressive close focus of a metre. Its optical build comprises BaK4 prisms and while being nitrogen filled it’s also waterproof to IPX7 standard. Further worth investigating is the Outrek series, with 8x32, 8x42 and 10x42 models available. Here the 8x32 offers a 119° field of view, 18mm eye relief, a weight of 526g, BaK4 prisms, fully multi coated lenses and again IPX7 level waterproofing.

A second new and improved product is the Visible Dust Quasar Plus 7x Sensor Loupe, now supplied with a yellow filter to effectively block blue light, increase contrast and let the user easier distinguish between dust and dirt. Glare is reduced for a sharper image. Also new is a threaded metal ring allowing various hoods and filters to be attached for easier sensor viewing, while the focusing system has been improved to allow better viewing of deeper lens chambers. Key features include Bright Vue technology with vari-angled LED orientation, ED (ExtraLow Dispersion) glass and a Fluorine coated lens. It’s supplied with a Magic Cleaner Ultra Microfiber cloth and handy zipped travel bag (2x CR2032 batteries required for power are a saleable extra). Thirdly, there are new SL sensor cleaning slanted swabs. These offer superior performance with uniform pressure across the edge. A smoother flow means there are fewer streaks, while a redesigned handle gives a firmer grip. Cleaning into corners is also easier with the slanted triangular shape. Described as a large aperture, ultra wide angle zoom with ‘expressive’ imaging capabilities, the fact that it is small and lightweight suggests it is ideal for landscapes, travel, video, and particularly for those customers seeking to create online content. The ultra wide angle of view is useful for hand held vlogging where both the person recording the action and their surrounding environment need to be in frame. Tell them that it’s the world’s smallest and lightest ultra wide-angle zoom lens for APS-C sensor mirrorless cameras, at the time of writing, covering an effective focal range of 15-27mm in 35mm terms. ‘ANOVA’ BRIGHT, INNOVATIVE IDEA FROM ROTOLIGHT The British lighting expert is once again flying the flag for innovation with the launch of the “all weather powerhouse” Anova PRO 3. We discover why photographers, videographers and moviemakers alike will feel this is an essential purchase

Features of note include 22,000 Lux brightness, which is more than twice the output of earlier generations of Anova and its AEOS 2 PRO, and IP65 weather resistance; yes, this light can be used outdoors in the pouring rain (our own shot of Rod with the light was taken in light drizzle – BPI News Ed). In fact it’s impressively claimed to be able to withstand a pressure jet, sand and dust with it. Unsurprisingly then, Rotolight’s CEO describes the Anova

Inbuilt Godox, Profoto, Elinchrom, Neewer and Pixapro flash receivers provide photographers with the ultimate in flexibility. Further new attributes to make this LED light a new benchmark product include new RGB and XY modes for precise colour control. As with previous generations, Rotolight’s suite of CineSFX effects including fire, lightning, TV, gunshot and paparazzi are included, with the ability to customise, save and instantly recall favourite settings to save time on set, as well as go for the new and improved SFX presets. As the name indicates the Bristol Maxima 333+ is the slightly larger of the two options. It offers interior dimensions of 300x210x100mm and weighs 740g. Next up in a choice of brown, red or blue are the Malaga Compact 200, 300 and 400 (left) bags, the numbers indicating increasing internal sizes. With a classic design they’re suited more to compact cameras. Like Cullmann’s other bags, construction is from weather resistant polyester. The smallest ‘200’ bag offers snug interior dimensions of 7x10x3cm and weighs just 72g. By contrast the 400 is only slightly

larger at 7x11x5cm sized internally, and weighs 90g. Likewise compact and specifically for housing Fuji’s popular Instax mini 12 camera is the eyecatching Cullman Rio Fit 120. Amateur Photographer Editor Nigel Atherton has been in touch with BPI News to tell us it’s making changes to its annual awards for next year that will see it turn from an invitation-only event to one open to the wider UK photographic trade. As those with long memories will be aware, the awards have been going since 1978, celebrating the best cameras, lenses and accessories released during the previous year. In recent times the scope has also broadened to reward outstanding photography, as well as retailer awards voted for by the public. A PAIR OF LOOKERS FROM SIGMA

The third party lens manufacturer has unveiled a pair of new zoom lenses worth looking into in the Sigma 10-18mm f/2.8 DC DN ‘Contemporary’ series lens (as featured on page 10 of this issue) and the Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 DG DN OS ‘Sports’ lens. The former is described as the world’s smallest and lightest ultra wide-angle zoom lens for APS-C cameras. Available for Fuji X mount, the L-Mount and Sony E-mount it covers a focal range of 15-27mm in 35mm equivalent terms and features a newly developed push-on petal type lens hood. We’re told that a unique aspherical element reduces the overall size of the lens, while enhancing image quality. The 10-18mm went on sale at the end of October at £599.99 SRP. We’ll have to be patient a little longer for the 70-200mm as this one is a development announcement, so pricing and full set of specifications are still to be shared. HAHNEMÜHLE DOES THE DIGITAL FINEART PAPER HAT-TRICK

Fine art inkjet paper specialist Hahnemühle says it’s responding to a growing trend for a ‘decelerated view of the world around us’, as well consumers wanting products demonstrating eco friendliness with its latest trio of baryta papers, plus one ‘sustainable’ photo paper

hotographers and specialist retailers will be aware that the award winning Hahnemühle already offers quite a wide range of baryta papers suitable for inkjet printing. That hasn’t stopped it expanding and innovating as regards its offerings, however. So this issue we have news of three new baryta papers and a ‘plus one’.

DON’T LOSE YOUR ‘RAG’ Sitting within its Digital FineArt Collection, the latest addition in Photo Rag Matt Baryta (right) is described as being ‘in the spirit of black and white analogue photography’ and unsurprisingly is claimed as being particularly good for reproducing B&W imagery. With ‘Rag’ indicating a cotton based paper, this 100% cotton media is, we’re told, devoid of any ‘OBA’ or optical brighteners. It’s also a matt paper with a satin sheen, properties that have never been seen before in the Hahnemühle range. Capable of producing prints with vivid colour detail and deep, rich velvety blacks, it boasts a thickness of 308 gsm. Its surface is described as super fine, according to its maker, yet not 100% smooth, while it’s available in either sheet form or as rolls. Next up is Bamboo Gloss Baryta 305 gsm (below), the first fine art inkjet paper within its Digital FineArt Collection with a premium high gloss baryta inkjet coating. Comprised of 90% bamboo fibres and 10% cotton, Hahnemühle describes this one as well

suited to printing pictures featuring reflections or ‘watery’ content. This is a natural white high gloss paper that is said to look particularly good even when viewed in a half-light or at an angle. Again we’re told this is a never-seen-before natural fibre series paper with a baryta finish, its lightly textured surface meaning it has the look and feel of a traditional analogue darkroom baryta paper. From Hahnemühle’s photo range of papers, described as providing a middle step between your average photo paper and the maker’s own FineArt range, is new Photo Silk Baryta X paper (right). A successor to its previously much loved Photo Silk Baryta, this is described as having an egg white colour that is not super bright white. The material here is also thinner than the FineArt range. Interestingly, it’s described as being good for shots taken in silver halide film mode on the latest cameras, while the price point is very attractive for

a Hahnemühle paper. Its unique coating is claimed to deliver a very large colour space, creamy whites and velvety deep blacks. The final ‘plus one’ paper release is a Hahnemühle Sustainable Photo Satin paper (above), claimed to be fully recyclable with regular household paper. Offering 220gsm thickness, thanks to a newly developed bio inkjet coasting free of plastic composites this photo paper is 100% sustainable and pulp-able, is scratch resistant and boasts a velvety smooth surface with colour reproduction capabilities described by the brand as ‘brilliant’. Like the Photo Silk Baryta X paper above, it’s also said to be conveniently fast drying. The former Olympus, latterly known as the more opaque OM Digital Solutions, may well be the last brand standing at the time of writing when it comes to updating its toughened compact camera offering. So for those customers of yours seeking to snap away in action packed scenarios or inclement conditions without fretting about wrecking their device, the arrival of the new OM System TG-7 is welcome. While its internal sensor may be small, the dustproof and shockproof device can be dunked down to 15 metres in the ‘drink’ and keep shooting down to -10°C without catching a cold. It can also be used with optional PT-059 underwater housing, sold separately, while its internal Field Sensor System can automatically acquire location and environmental data. Basically, if James Bond wanted a point-and-shoot camera, this would be it. Further features include an f/2 aperture for its internally stacked zoom lens, Raw recording and 1cm macro close ups. SOFORT, SO LEICA, AS NEW PREMIUM CAMERA COMBATS AI

Instant cameras aren’t just the terrain of Fuji, Kodak or original stalwart Polaroid. Undoubtedly the most affordable Leica camera has been unveiled by the brand in the new Sofort 2 instant print camera. Available in three colours, this is a hybrid analogue and digital device. So, unlike a more basic instant print camera, photographers can shoot images digitally and decide on the best ones before printing them. This process is undertaken via a manually operated printing lever on the camera. Compatibility is offered with Fuji’s Instax Mini photo paper. Downloading the Leica Fotos App enables images that have been taken with a smartphone or another Leica camera to be transferred to the Sofort 2 and printed out. Sundry camera accessories are also available to include wrist straps, carrying straps and bags. Sales of the black, white or red cameras were due to begin early November via all Leica stores and authorised dealers, at a suggested price of £350. At the other end of the scale is Leica’s latest premium camera in the M11-P, available in black or silver. With a price tag of £8,000, this model seeks to combat the perceived threat to photographers of wholly AI generated imagery by being the world’s first camera to attach Content

Credentials to images at the point of capture, to protect the authenticity of digital images. As with other cameras in Leica’s P series, the M11-P deliberately omits the signature red Leica dot on the front of the camera to allow for discreet photography. Those looking to bask in the glow of owning a Leica haven’t been forgotten however, as instead it’s opted to engrave Leica lettering on the top plate. Core features of the camera include a 60MP BSI CMOS sensor, Leica’s ‘triple resolution’ technology, high performance Maestro III processor, 256GB internal memory, plus sapphire crystal glass with an anti reflective protective coating on the LCD screen.

Launched alongside this camera is the next generation of the Leica Summicron-M 28mm f/2 ASPH lens, described as a state of the art, versatile wide-angle lens with an improved and ergonomic design. In the midst of a prolonged cost of living crisis and as many businesses going bust as at the height of the 2008-9 financial crash, rather than it being it game over for Black Friday due to purse tightening, it appears the opposite is true and the appeal of the annual consumer bargain hunt is stronger than ever. So, the question is, how can you save your customers money while still making a profit?

ith so many pressures bearing down on our ability to do business these days, we could be forgiven for feeling Black Friday fatigue when this time of year rolls around once again. However, while some may feel the reward doesn’t justify thew effort involved, it’s apparent that those who do choose to go ‘all-in’ continue to sing its praises. Jason Mitchell, former CameraWorld MD and currently consultant to the business

reveals: “CameraWorld will be taking part in Black Friday this year and we’re expecting great things from it. Christmas has just turned into a reasonable month now. In past times, it was among the best performing months of the year, along with July. Now it has a great beginning, as it includes the carry-over period from the Black Friday deals, then it goes a bit slow in the middle, and, finally, has some surprises at the end from last minute shoppers.

“We’ve started to gather offers from the suppliers and this year with stock in a freer flowing position – for the last few years stock has been in short supply, so offers have been limited – prices seem keener, so we are aiming for a sharp rise in Black Friday sales.” Wilkinson Cameras MD David Parkinson remains equally positive about Black Friday and doesn’t feel the appeal has waned with people tightening their belts. In fact, he

ALWAYS BET ON THE BLACK Similarly emboldened you may be thinking about how to make the best of the uplift Black Friday on November 24th and its kissing cousin Cyber Monday 27th can bring to your bottom line, especially with special deals being promoted earlier and earlier. That makes some sense, in that offers begun in advance of the day itself can spread the potential sales frenzy over a more manageable period (with expectations in terms of delivery date also more realistic).

Friday is more of an online event, with typically far more orders taking place over the ‘net than in store, it does boost brick and mortar traffic as well. Especially if retailers can promote what makes them unique, not just the cheapest – including valuing staff knowledge and personal service. That’s something that can’t easily be replicated online. High street stores are always looking for ways to increase footfall, so here’s a golden opportunity to do just that that perhaps shouldn’t be passed up. Of course the ideal, however, is the multi platform retail approach. Expand time limited promotions and link them to specific and different methods of selling – so via your website, in-store and across social media too. Each promotion can be used to create awareness of the particular channel being used. If done correctly this creates a buzz of excitement and a following through shareable email, web links or posts read by followers.

In a period of high inflation, high interest rates and everyday living suddenly becoming more expensive, our customers will be looking for savings. “The desire to own some of this amazing new kit hasn’t waned – although the research and consideration period may have lengthened – and the benefits of the new mirrorless systems are clear to see. This year’s Black Friday offers of hundreds of pounds of savings, extra cashback, or even enhanced part exchange values, all make the new kit more desirable and affordable. The extra cashback benefits the customer but has no impact on our margin, other than hopefully we sell a few extra. The Black Friday promotions we will not be supporting are those who expect us to sacrifice margin. “If Black Friday is engineered correctly, our customers can save and

Some photo independents have told us they believe their customers delay purchases in the hope of a Black Friday bargain, and so that kills their trade leading up to it, and, to a lesser extent, in the usually busy month of December. Still, those same retailers also tell us they feel like they are missing out if they don’t jump on the Black Friday bandwagon at all. And while specialists can make hay while the sun shines, they also need to be aware of trying to maintain this artificially inflated momentum for the rest of the year. For this reason business owners need to capture and harvest data collected online and then, carefully, email offers to customers with a call to action. The same offer can be made to social media connections – while trying to avoid merely spamming recipients to such an extent any offers actually become off-putting. And while yes, there’s no doubt Black

If there’s not cynicism from retailers regarding Black Friday, might one danger be cynicism from customers? Consumers have become wise to ‘deals’ offered at prices that were the same just a few weeks before, or designed to clear out unwanted items that have been stuck, unsold, at the back of the stockroom for months. And it may be opportune to bear in mind that free shipping has proved to be just as important to consumers as huge discounts. Anything offered ‘free’ typically sets the pulse racing. Beyond the effort involved in sourcing and pricing stock – and then making preparations for fulfilling a potentially unusually high volume of orders in a shortened time frame – those who have kept and maintained data compliant mailing lists will have a ready-made audience to pitch to this Black Friday, without a huge amount of additional effort being involved. If the conclusion is that via Black Friday, retailers can do as much, if not more, trade over a single weekend as they do in the traditional two weeks just prior to Christmas itself, then it’s also worth dovetailing any promotions of your own with whatever the big hardware manufacturers are offering. Arguably there’s never a better time to offer a camera case, tripod or accessory to go with that freshly discounted camera and lens combo.

TIPA HOLDS WORLD AWARDS CEREMONY AT PHOTOPIA Just after we’d sent our previous issue to print, news reached us of the previously announced TIPA World Awards winners for 2023 receiving their prizes in person at Photopia in Hamburg, during the four-day event. Attended by company representatives of the 40 winning awards, the prize giving was live streamed and hosted, as usual, by TIPA Chairman Thomas Gerwers who pointed out that the awards – voted on by the great and the good of the technical imaging press, including

Wex picks Putney for 15th store Now, apart from the Half Moon pub and the riverside, we have a further reason to visit our neighbouring Putney. Wex Photo Video has chosen the enclave as the location of its 15th physical shop (the third to open this year) and its second London store. A grand opening is planned from 10am on December 6th, with famed photographer Martin Parr joining proceedings at 11am. Attendees are also promised in-store discounts on some of the latest gear and Wex’s own services. We’re told the new store, at Unit 2, Tileman House, 133 Upper Richmond Road, SW15 2TR, is close to the busy high street and rail links via
