Welcome

A

s we reflect on the past season, it is already that time of year when we are working towards ensuring that everything is coming together in preparation for the next season. Yes, next Season! Bowls SA Committees play a key role in safeguarding that everything that happens at State level goes according to plan; a task that requires them to put in a huge number of hours behind the scenes to make events happen. Like Clubs all around the State, Bowls SA is very lucky to have such a large number of dedicated volunteers who put in the hard yards to make sure the discipline is well managed and seamless. I would like to take the opportunity to personally thank the members of all Bowls SA Committees for their hard work, dedication and commitment to the cause. For many years, Club membership has been the cornerstone of South Australian Lawn Bowls and for most of the last decade, nationally, traditional membership has faced a small annual decline each year with Clubs forced to find a greater level of non-member revenue to ensure their viability.

A key program is Night Owls which has been conducted over many years by in excess of 50% of South Australian Clubs. Through this program Clubs have boosted their retention rate and introduced the game to a whole new audience as well as increasing revenue through increased food and beverage sales. In addition they have dramatically strengthened the Club’s engagement with the local community through welcoming people of different ages, genders and talents. At the end of the day Fun is the most important thing any Bowls Club can offer to their members and it should be what being a Bowls Club member is all about.

Mark Easton CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER

A key area for Clubs to attract and maintain members is to ensure the product they are offering is enticing to potential members and cannot be obtained from other sources. This is why it is so critical for Clubs to look carefully at what they offer to their members and to be aware of new ideas that will engage potential members more strongly with their Bowls Club.

President's Message

A

t the time this goes to print Clubs, Associations and Regions will have had their Annual General Meetings and many bowlers will have packed their bowls away and headed off to warmer climates. I would like to take this opportunity to thank all those who were prepared to hold office during the year; bowls could not operate without your efforts. The year has finished with some significant events for our State. In the Australian Sides Championships  held in Western Australia during April our men finished in second place and the women came in 5th. The players are to be congratulated on their results and the way they conducted themselves throughout the event. They have certainly given notice that our players are not to be taken lightly in any competition. I also had the pleasure of watching some of the games during the Champions Week and once again our players demonstrated a professional approach and a keenness to win. Congratulations to all those who took part. In April the Australian Blind Bowlers Association Championships were held at Salisbury Bowling Club. Bowlers from all over Australia took part and I was pleased to be able to attend the opening. Salisbury Club are to be congratulated on the presentation of the greens and Club rooms; they are a credit to all those members who have been involved in the upgrading and we look forward to seeing further progress in the future. In April the State Consultative Body met and as it is now more

than 10 years since the amalgamation of the RSABA and SAWBA it is considered the appropriate time to review our structure to see if we can make our governance more effective in the way we deliver all things associated with our game. To assist in this matter a facilitator was engaged to identify issues and to see what improvements can be made. These matters will be further discussed by the Board and the Councillors at the State Consultative Body meeting in July. A number of Councillors are not renominating for their position and we thank them for the many years of dedicated service they have given to the sport. Looking towards the future it is important that we recognise what is happening within our sport. Pennant numbers are declining each year but social bowlers are increasing and although we welcome them to our Clubs and appreciate the revenue that their visits generate we are faced with the challenge of how to interest them to become members. Do we need to look at competitions other than pennants? Do we need to look at incentives that will make social bowlers keen to join? These are the questions we all need to ask and to seek answers that will make our sport sustainable into the future. While I realise that we all want to just get on and play bowls, there is the possibility that numbers will dwindle to a level that has a serious impact on the future of our competitions. The challenge for each and every one is to work together to ensure that bowls is sustainable and that it becomes the sport that everyone wants to play! Once again we must thank our volunteers who are the heart and soul of our sport and we look forward to seeing you on the green next season.

SA BOWLER At the end of each season Bowls SA conducts a review of all expenditure including the publication of the SA

Bowler. This year’s review has identified areas of concern, inclusive of postage, distribution and publication costs that need to be addressed for the new season. It has been widely reported that postage costs through Australia Post have and will continue to rise. This will result in a huge increase in an already large distribution cost which provides ongoing sustainability issues. Bowls SA are keen to communicate to all bowlers in the most effective, efficient and timely manner with consideration to widen distribution to casual and potential members. Many publications such as The Advertiser are now shifting to digital editions which can be readily accessed online at a heavily reduced cost to the consumer each year, this is one avenue being explored by a working party. Please watch this space!

Clubs SA | Compliance Update Checklist Revised Risk Assessment and Liquor Management Plan

All Clubs are required to review their Risk Assessment and Liquor Management Plan. 2015 Master Builders National Carnival

T

he 2015 James Wall Cup was hosted in Geelong at the Belmont Bowls Club with teams from Western Australia, Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and South Australia competing for the James Wall Cup that has been contested in 70 annual carnivals, the inaugural James Wall Cup commenced in 1923, and the David Barro Cup now in its sixth year. South Australia, having won the James Wall Cup in the previous two years, was anxious to make it three in a row. Well led by experienced skippers and supported by capable teams, SA was well placed on Day 3 and poised to make a bold bid for victory on the final two days.

Day 4 results reflected another battle between Victoria and South Australia for top spot. On the final day of the competition it went down to the wire with victory going our way and the Barro Cup returned to SA after a three year absence. The second SA team finished a very close third. Once again, South Australian bowlers were seen as competitive on the national scene and all 23 members of the squad contributed to a very successful event. June 2016 will see the South Australian Master Builders competing at Soldiers Point in Newcastle and fiercely determined to win both cups.

Day 4 saw SA edge marginally in front of the competition at the close of play and eager to meet the Victorians on the final day. After a good start, the game swung in favour of the Victorians on all rinks and resulted in the SA contingent finishing third overall with Victoria finally capturing the coveted James Wall Cup and victorious after 19 years of disappointment. Western Australia finished in second place.

ANYTIME ANYWHERE

There was better news for the two SA teams that contested the David Barro cup with both in the running at Day 3, with two wins each and only Victoria challenging with Queensland and Western Australia collapsing on the third day and out of contention.

State Representative Players of the Year The State Representative Player of the Year titles are awarded to the best performed State players in all test matches played during the year. This is based on players submitting point allocations on their fellow teammates for each game, with the points being added together to decide the State Representative of the Year. Breeanna Dickson displayed solid performances as Skip in the annual SA v Vic Test Series and the Australian Sides Championships, to claim the State Representative of the Year title for the second year in a row. Max Kleinig showed his skills when he scored well in trying conditions at the SA v Vic Series. He then starred in the Australian Sides Championships as Skip, which saw him earn a call up by Bowls Australia to participate in the Australian Trial Camp. Club of the Year finalists were selected from nominees that met the initial criteria for achievement or development of strategies in key areas including membership of the STARCLUB Club Development Program; Clubs SA; Good Sports Program; V-Star Volunteer Management Program through the Office for Recreation & Sport and have actioned a Business and or Strategic Plan. To ensure transparency, an independent panel of seven comprising representatives from Clubs SA, ANZ and Good Sports assessed the nominations and submitted their votes to determine the winner of each category and ultimately the Overall Club of the Year.

SMALL COUNTRY CLUB The two finalists Melrose Memorial and Watervale both had an exceptional year and after seven rounds the panel were unable to separate them. With the vote tied it was with great pleasure that Melrose Memorial and Watervale were named as dual winners of the Small Country Club of the Year Award for 2014-2015. Melrose Memorial Being a recognised as a STARCLUB has completed a development journey to establish the Melrose Memorial Bowling Club as the only Club in the Mid North to have achieved this status. Watervale Watervale has worked extremely hard to re-establish itself as a force in both men’s and women’s pennant and despite fairly modest facilities has become a hub of the community for families. By raising the Club’s profile through numerous events and volunteers undertaking extensive improvements the Club has seen an increase in membership of all ages. Liz Bishop of Melrose and Frank Armfield representing Watervale were thrilled to accept the award on behalf of their Clubs.

METROPOLITAN The six finalists in the Metropolitan Club of the Year Award were: Clarence Gardens Clarence Gardens Bowling Club has been pro-active in preparation of a Strategic Plan, demonstrating best practice in all 12 | SA BOWLER | June 2015

Certificates of Recognition and Appreciation are regularly presented to volunteers to acknowledge their support. The Club has been involved with the local Primary School and provided information to students of Trinity College on the rules of the game and strategy of play.

Mannum The Mannum Bowling Club has achieved significant upgrading of their facilities and recognition of their efforts by the Mid Murray Council who supported these programs has resulted in a greatly improved asset for the town and country. A modern facility overlooking the River Murray with excellent surrounds, a welcoming atmosphere and a strong commitment to future places the Club in an enviable position to promote, play and support bowls in Mannum and the region. McLaren Vale The McLaren Vale Bowling Club has shown that it has invested a great deal in forward planning through the adoption of a comprehensive Strategic Plan and excellent governance structure. The starting point was a questionnaire / survey covering all aspects of the club from facilities, bowling, greens, social events and community presence. All members and community stakeholders were invited to respond. The survey results were collated, a Focus Group met and developed the SWOT analysis for the Club. Mission and Vision statements were created by the Board of Management and referred to the members for endorsement. As a result Club members have endorsed a capital expenditure plan over the next five years to improve aspects of their Club that include a full remodelling of the clubhouse toilets, bar and office areas including new lighting, floor coverings and sound system. Port Broughton The Management Committee of the Port Broughton Bowling Club and members are very proud of their achievements with installation of a new synthetic green, solar panel system, retractable shades, galvanised seating, new signage and strategically placed notice boards to ensure members are kept up to date. Future planning will address not only visible improvements but also the continuation of the dynamic leadership, which is taking the Club to a very promising future. McLaren Vale Administrative Secretary Marie Broadwood proudly accepted the Large Country Club of the Year Award on behalf of her Club.

OVERALL CLUB OF THE YEAR WINNER The four Club of the Year category winners were subsequently considered for the honour of being named as the Overall Club of the Year for 2014-2015. A jubilant Bryan Morden was on stage to accept the plaque for the Port Noarlunga Bowling Club from Lindsay Nobes, ANZ District Manager SA North East & Fleurieu to round off an exceptional night for the Port Noarlunga Club.

C

hanges within the Metropolitan Pennant competitions for season 2014/15 saw the Premier and Major League Saturday clubs go into the year under new conditions. The possibility of three teams being promoted or demoted in the elite competition was real. A newly introduced finals concept in the Major League competitions led to a knock out series between the final eight teams from the North and the South. The Minor Premiers Henley (South) and Salisbury (North) earned automatic promotion to the Premier League and Payneham could have joined them with a win against Salisbury on Grand Final day at Hawthorn Bowling Club. The northern club however got up 95-81 to shut the Panthers out. The four game final series in the Premier League was one out of the box with Ascot Park beating a resurgent Holdfast Bay 82-81 in what was a heart stopping Grand Final. 14 shots covered the winning margins across the quartet of finals games. Prospect-Broadview went into the Thursday Women’s Grand Final with plenty to play for. The club was in its 100th year of the Prospect Club and its Metro One Saturday side had earned promotion into the Major League North competition for the first time in its history. Janet Cocks and her girls were up against a Marion Hurricanes team which came into the season with little fanfare but fought hard all year. The

16 | SA BOWLER | June 2015

recruitment of Chris Thulborn from Ascot Park and Joc Hastie from Brighton had seen the Hurricanes strengthened but the team still went in as underdogs. The Pennant went to Prospect/Broadview to the tune of 66-49 to round off a stellar year for the club. The Major League Thursday Grand Final between Happy Valley and Morphett Vale had our minds drifting back to the 1990’s when both clubs played in the now defunct Southern Country Association. Having narrowly missed out on promotion in season 2013/14 Happy Valley took the honours with a 57-42 defeat of its traditional rival. While some clubs continue to dominate in the regional Pennant competitions each year there are always eye catching performances from teams which go into the year as perceived underdogs. Season 2014-2015 must surely belong to Birchmore Grey in the Kangaroo Island Saturday Division One series. A 125-118 win against Kingscote Gold in the Grand Final saw the club bank its first elite title since 1987. The fiverink per side game went down to the wire with three rinks from each team remaining on the green and the clubs locked together. Birchmore did enough in the final two or three ends to secure the long awaited title. As a matter of interest the champion club boasts only 68 members including social members so it was a win for the ages.

In the Riverland, Berri picked up its sixth consecutive title in the Saturday competition with a hard fought 79-69 win against an emerging Loxton RSL outfit and recorded its seventh in a row in the Thursday series after a win against Renmark RSL. Both flags were special as it was the final season before the famous club moves to a new under cover facility at Glassey Park for season 2015/16. In Great Southern the McLaren Vale Crushers chalked up their fifth consecutive Division One Saturday title with another excellent win against Goolwa Black despite the loss of two experienced bowlers during the offseason. In the Barossa and Light, Nuriootpa picked up its third consecutive Division One Pennant with a tight 90-86 defeat of Tanunda. In Region 8 Brinkworth White snatched a 25 shot win over Mundoora in Division One to give the club five consecutive flags. In Wooroora a strong Port Wakefield club continued to hold sway grabbing its third successive Division One title after a 91-54 win against Mallala. Jamestown entered the North Western Region Grand Final as slight favourites and came away with a 107-86 victory over BHAS. In the Hills Woodside won on only one rink of three played but did enough to

take out a strong Hahndorf combination. News from the Mid Murray sees that in a competition that doesn’t play finals Swan Reach proved too good for its opposition after a stellar year. The Southern Eyre Thursday and Saturday competitions were both taken out by teams from the beautiful township of Cummins. It was a great season for the club with the Men’s Red and Women’s White teams grabbing a flag and members figuring prominently in Country Round Robin, Country Carnival, Prestige Medley as well as Champions Week. Lower South East benchmark clubs Mt Gambier RSL and Mt Gambier met in the Saturday Grand Final with the RSL taking the honours after an 80-54 win against the reigning Premiers. In the Upper South East Saturday competition Keith Gold went back-toback with a sensational three rink 90-50 win against Bordertown White. When I asked Association Secretary Neil Poulton what sort of game it was he laughingly said that it was a “shocker”. No prize for guessing which club he was playing for!! Next year Neil, next year! Mundulla Gold successfully picked up the flag in the Thursday Ladies Grand Final, with a 52-33 defeat of Keith. In the Lower Yorke Peninsula, Minlaton also went back-to-back with a 107-87 defeat of Edithburgh winning on three of four rinks played.

In the Upper Yorke Thursday Grand Final, Wallaroo White won a close one against a competitive Kadina 80-75 whilst in the Saturday Division One Grand Final Wallaroo grabbed a 106-84 win against Moonta Red to give the club a great duet of victories. A competitive Saturday Mid North Grand Final at Burra saw Clare Gold take the honours with a two shot win over an unlucky Blyth which led during the second half of the game. In the Lower Murray Saturday Grand Final, Jervois went back to back with a heart stopping one shot win over Murray Bridge. Jervois continues to perform well in what is a highly competitive competition. In the Eastern Eyre Peninsula Saturday series a talented Cowell South side grabbed the flag after taking out Port Neill 103-89. ETSA Gold defeated Port Augusta Red 67-66 in the Spencer Gulf Saturday Pennant after going into their final ends with a 7 shot advantage while in the Thursday competition, ETSA Gold beat ETSA Blue in the Grand Final. In the Silver City, North Broken Hill Bowling Club made the Grand Final its own win; the club’s White team beating the Blues in a tight game. In the Southern Mallee, Murrayville RSL took out the Division One Saturday title with a close win over Parilla whilst Parilla turned the tables to grab the Second

Division flag against Murrayville. At a time when more and more family groups are playing in Pennant competitions throughout the State it is worthwhile mentioning Loxton RSL’s Cora Manuel who this year played in Division 3 mid-week Pennants alongside son Robert and granddaughters Leanna Manuel and Carlee Vowles. Cora has bowled since 1981 whilst Robert had his first year alongside his mother and two daughters. I speak from experience when I say that there is nothing quite like hitting the greens in Pennants as a family group. Nice one Cora and may the force be with you!

C

hampions Week, held April 23-29, saw the qualifiers of State Events come together at Lockleys Bowling Club to determine the title winners for 2014-2015.

OPEN SINGLES The State Open Singles opened the line-up with a tussle between Matthew Northcott and Charlie Martin in the first Semi-final. Charlie jumped to a 7-1 lead after the first 6 ends, before Matthew powered back to finish strongly to move into the finals 25-15. In the other Semi-final, Mark Haines powered ahead to a 16-6 lead before holding off a fight-back from fellow state team member Adam Forbes; qualifying for the finals with a 25-13 win. In the Final, Matthew started strongly picking up the first two ends before Mark fired back and charged to a 14-7 lead. Matthew then commenced his fight-back turning it into a close battle before claiming the State Open Singles title 25-20.

WOMEN’S CHAMPION OF CHAMPION PAIRS The Women’s Champion of Champion Pairs semi-finals were two fiercely contested games. Lyn Wildash and Renata Callisto from Grange prevailed on the last end by one shot over defending champions Jodi Kraguljac and Helen Hutton, while in the other Semi-final Marion’s Lyn Prosso and Chris Thulborn fought back after a slow start against Jennifer Kubank and Kerry Treloar from Berri. The Final was a thrilling affair. The close game saw the Marion pair jump ahead at the 12th end and although the Grange pair attempted a fight back Lyn and Chris pulled together to record a 17-15 win and claim the Women’s Champion of Champion Pairs title.

MEN’S STATE PAIRS The duo of Ben Johnson and Brandon Whiley lined up against Terry McDonnell and Graham Wakefield in the first Semi-final; a close battle until Ben and Brandon pulled away at the 11th end to steam to the finish. Another tense battle in the other Semi ensued between the pair of Adam Forbes and Scott Thulborn, and the Andrew Peters and Stuart Forbes duo with Andrew and Stuart staging a come-back winning the last three ends to go through to the final. The Final proved to be an absolute nail-biter when Ben and Brandon jumped ahead to lead by five after nine ends, before Andrew and Stuart pulled ahead by four. Ben and Brandon fought back claiming a two on the last end to take the game into an extra end to decide the winner. On the penultimate end, Ben held shot with Andrew and Stuart rattling but not quite able to dislodge the bowl resulting in Ben and Brandon taking out the 2015 title by one shot. In what appears to be one of the youngest Men’s State Pairs finals, all four finalists being 25 or under, Ben and Brandon are the second-youngest pair to win the Men’s State Pairs title.

In the second Semi, Janet Cocks and Penny Landherr also fought out a close one with Jenny Ross and Teresa Dean, before taking the lead at the 9th end and holding out to go through to the final. Taking an early lead by nine shots, Janet and Penny, rivals Lyn and Chris staged a huge fight back with both teams sending down fantastic bowls, however Janet and Penny held on to claim the 2015 title by three shots, making it their third State Pairs title together and Penny’s fourth.

BERRY BOWLING SYSTEM WOMEN’S STATE SINGLES A great match in the first Semi-final between Breeanna Dickson and Tracy Crane saw Breeanna start strongly. Tracy found form to come back in the middle before Breeanna finished with a run of seven ends straight to qualify for the Final. In the other Semi, a titanic tussle was taking place, with Renee McPharlin unable to dislodge Jackie Gardiner’s shot on the final end resulting in Jackie going through to the final by one shot. Four ends straight off saw Breeanna jump out to the lead by five in the Final, before Jackie pegged her back. Breeanna then powered home to take out her first State Singles title, and in doing, at the age of 20, became the youngest winner of the Women’s State Singles.

BERRY BOWLING SYSTEM MEN’S STATE SINGLES In the Men’s first Semi-final Mark Haines and Sam Pryor faced off with many replayed ends, before Mark qualified for his second Final for the 2015 Champions Week. The second Semi between good mates Simon Dorr and current Australian Champion of Champion Singles title-holder Scott Thulborn saw Simon race out to an early lead, before Scott reeled him back and they battled it out shot for shot before Simon finished off strongly to qualify for the final by two shots. State teammates Simon Dorr and Mark Haines then faced off in the Final with Mark starting strongly before Simon came back with the players exchanging shot for shot until Simon raced to the finish with four straight ends to claim his maiden State Singles title.

NATIONAL PHARMACIES MEN’S STATE TRIPLES The Munno Para team skipped by Mark Newton prevailed after they headed into the last end level and qualified for the Final by one shot against the defending champions Heath Raymond, Joe Conte and Tony Treloar who had teamed up to defend their State Triples title from last year. The Moonta team headed by Ian Hatcher held on over the Triple skipped by Barry Fry to claim the win by three shots and place themselves in the Final. After a close start between the triple of Leigh Roberts, Jason Wholohan and Mark Newton and the team of Gordon Davis, Graham Curtis and Ian Hatcher, the Moonta team resisted a fight back to take the lead and the Men’s State Triples title.

WOMEN’S STATE PAIRS

NATIONAL PHARMACIES WOMEN’S STATE TRIPLES

The first Semi-final saw Lyn Prosso and Chris Thulborn take on Ricki Hooper and Jenny Sharpe, the game coming down to the wire with Lyn and Chris going through by one shot.

Fresh from her State Singles victory, Breeanna Dickson skipped Renata Callisto and Renee McPharlin to secure a Semi-final berth over Kay Moncrieff, Jenny Ross and Teresa Dean.

They were joined in the Final by the team skipped by Breeanna Dickson after they held off a late challenge by the team skipped by Jackie Gardiner. The Women’s Final was a close match to begin with, before the team of Chris Geater-Johnson, Merrilyn Lovelock and Di Milner picked up a few consecutive ends to take a slight lead. However, the trio of Renata Callisto, Renee McPharlin and Breeanna Dickson picked up the last five ends to hit the front and storm home to claim the 2015 Women’s Triples title.

MEN’S CHAMPION OF CHAMPION PAIRS The Payneham pairing of Gary Miles and Wayne Prosser played the duo of Luke Pietersma and Justin Morris in the first Semi-final, with Gary and Wayne holding on and resisting a late charge from the Salisbury pairing. The other Semi-final saw Ascot Park team of Nathan Pedersen and Craig Mills hold on to claim a close battle over Tony Devlin and Ken Holtham of Marion. In the Final Nathan and Craig put their foot down to power away over Payneham’s Gary and Wayne to claim their maiden Champion of Champion Pairs title by 12 shots.

In the Final the Prospect-Broadview team jumped ahead to establish a strong lead early over the Yorke Peninsula four and held the lead to the end to claim the 2015 Women’s State Fours in commanding fashion.

MEN’S CHAMPION OF CHAMPION SINGLES State Singles titleholder Simon Dorr encountered newly crowned winner of the Champion of Champion Pairs, Craig Mills in the first quarter-final, with Craig moving into the Semi’s by three shots. While defending Champion Scott Thulborn confronted Brenton Rowntree from Ardrossan, picking up the pace to finish strongly and keep his title defence hopes alive. Ashley Halls from Hope Valley claimed the match convincingly over Alan Russell from Hawthorn to move into the semi-finals. The fourth quarter-final match-up saw Ian Miller of Toorak-Burnside come from behind to go through over Stuart Paul of Para Hills. The challenge was on in the first Semi between State teammates Craig and Scott, with Scott fighting back to qualify for the Final while in the second Semi encounter between Ian and Ashley, Ian finished strongly to set up a match-up against the defending Champion. Ian started a fight back after Scott had bounded ahead early but Scott resisted the challenge to hold on and claim back to back Men’s Champion of Champion Singles titles.

Past Presidents 11th State Friendship Carnival - Southern Branch

T

he first Friendship Carnival ever run by a management other than the State Executive commenced at Encounter Bay on Monday 27 April with an official opening by State President Rex Wilson. Twenty-eight teams from all across the State were entered either as teams or as single entries and placed in teams by the Southern Branch organising committee. Three teams represented Lower Murray, four Metro, seven Lower North, two Eyre Peninsula, three Lower South-east, three Yorke Peninsula and six from the host branch Southern.

Barry Wakefield, and Jeff Brown from Metro along with Kevin Newton and Greg Bulger from Southern Branch who managed 69 shots up. Many thanks to the four Clubs along the Coast who supported this event and did the Branch proud with the presentation of the facilities and greens and to the workers who made sure the Carnival went off without a hitch.

Day 1 at Encounter Bay was exciting for some with an ‘8’ scored in the first game by Barbara Tiggemann, Margaret Borlase, Adrianna Coppin and John Florence, whilst Kay McDonald (Metro), Lorraine Dixon (Metro), Margaret Gameau (Lower North), and Gladys “pocket rocket” Ludbrook (Metro) had two good wins for the runners-up prize being 16 shots up and Joan Ellis, Margaret Johnson, Ella and Derek Pietersma (Lower South East) had two wins with 27 shots up. At the end of the day there had been a total of six two game winners. Day 2 on the carpet at Port Elliot resulted in seven two game winners with the runners-up prize going to Keith Heritage (Metro), Peter Caldicott, Joy Caldicott and Jim Roberts (Southern), 23 shots up, on their home greens, and Graham Wayland, Kevin Schulz, Brian Scon and Joe Conte from Lower Murray being 25 shots up for the daily winners cheques. Goolwa was the venue for Day 3 and again there were seven teams recording double wins. Daily winners were John Ludbrook, Malcolm Baldock, Phil McDonald and Gary Benveniste (Metro) with Stan Graefe, Barbara Tiggemann, Adrianna Coppin, and John Florence (Southern Branch) being the runners-up. The final and fourth day was hosted by Victor Harbor and with great conditions and the traditional South Coast wind being notably absent, Sue and Leon Fisher (Eyre Peninsula), Graham Sampson and Dean Stringer (Lower Murray) took advantage of the green speed to win the day with an amazing 54 shots up in two games ahead of Jill Sobey, Mim and Mike Topham, and Terry Hudson from Yorke Peninsula the runners-up with plus 45. Our final event for the week was the presentation dinner held at Encounter Bay where State President Rex Wilson spoke about the Carnival, thanked outgoing Branch President Margaret Borlase and her organising committee for the way the event was run. Rex reminded all present that the Bi-Annual National Carnival will be held in the Metro area in April next year. The overall results for the Carnival were announced and with every team suffering at least one loss the top three sides all finished with seven wins out of eight games. Runners-up for the week were Karen and Larry Swanson, Trevor Secombe and Ian McFarlane from Lower North Branch on 49 shots up, with the winners being

ollowing qualifying rounds in seven Regions across the State, 24 teams progressed to the 2015 State Night Owls Final held on Sunday 19 April at Walkerville Bowling Club. After some great games, the calculation to crown the title came down to the shots difference between DB’s from Region 11, Rye Grass and New Boys both from Region 8, who had all won all three of their games. With the greatest shots difference, the DB’s were crowned the 2015 State Night Owls Winners. Well done to Luke Kingston, Alex Mew, Andrew Temple and Paul Datta, runners-up Rye Grass and third placed New Boys. Congratulations to all teams. Thank you to Walkerville Bowling Club for hosting the State Final, as well as the Region host clubs for conducting the qualifying rounds. Our thanks must also go to West End for their continued sponsorship of the event.

fter a working party comprising representatives from Disability Recreation and Sport SA, the SA Blind Bowlers Club and Inclusive Sport SA met to organise the format for a new event, the inaugural State Multi-Disability Championships were held 9-12 April at Clearview. While only one category of events were able to be held, the hope is that this will increase in the future. The Pair of Barry Charity (Rosewater) and Steven Quinn (Hope Valley) along with Liam Buckley and Mike Teakle of Angaston won their sections to move on to do battle for the title and with a six shot winning margin, Barry and Steven were able to claim the State Multi-Disability Pairs Champions trophy. In the Singles event Angaston member Liam Buckley finished strongly to be crowned the State Multi-Disability Singles Champion over Chris Flavel of Lockleys. Thanks go to the Clearview Bowling Club for doing a magnificent job hosting the event for 2015. Bowls SA looks forward to further developing this event into the future.

Ray Leesong Ray has been an active member of the Bordertown Bowling Club since he joined in 1989. He spent several years on the Social Committee, but the majority of his time since 1997 has been on the Greens Committee, where he held the position of Greens Manager for many years. With his ability to fix anything around or on the green, Ray was the man you went to when you wanted something done. Even at the age of 90, Ray is still an active bowling member and puts down a mean bowl. In 2004 Ray was rewarded with Life Membership of the Club for his efforts and is congratulated on celebrating his 90th Birthday. The Club hopes to see him around for a good while to come.

Bordertown boys. The men’s fours team Craig Sutton, Doug Murch (sub for Mick Kerber) Phil McLeod and Bob Cavanagh had control of their game from the start. Naracoorte men couldn’t match it with the Bordertown four and they went on to have a comfortable win. A feather in the cap for the Bordertown Club and with the help of the USE Keith teams, ladies fours Marj Richardson, Pat Holthom, Jenny Trengrove and Jo White also with Keith’s father son pair Gordon and Darrell Stopp, the USE secured the Region 1 Shield from the LSE by winning six of the possible eight games played.

REGION 3 Whyalla Golf After a long delay the Whyalla Golf Bowling Ladies were able to present their new clubrooms to the players attending their Invitation Day. Teams attending were Port Augusta, ETSA, Quorn, Wilmington, Ceduna, Cummins, Crystal Brook, Laura, Port Lincoln, Kirton Point, Wudinna, Melrose, Whyalla and Whyalla Golf. At the completion of the four games, four teams had won all four games. Upper SE Champion singles, pairs and triples player Dianne Murch had a fantastic singles game against Lower SE, Heather Richards. “A brilliant game!” the spectators said and to quote the marker, Jenny Waugh “a game worthy of television coverage.” After a three hour battle Dianne won 27-20. To cap off a double, Dianne Murch and Judy Lack won the pairs on the last end against LSE Jenny Tilley and Judy Grosvenor. The men’s triples consisting of Neil Poulton, Jim McLellan and Richard Muenster had a great battle against Mount Gambier RSL and were level with one end to play. Rae Brewster OAM Port Lincoln 90th Anniversary A milestone in the history of the Port Lincoln Bowling Club Inc. was marked on Saturday 11 April 2015, with the celebration of its 90th anniversary. President, Peter Myers welcomed all bowlers and visitors, Life Members Glad Bertram and Gordon Hartley put down the first jack and bowl before 40 players including two visitors from Caloundra and four from Cummins took to the greens. It was a pleasure to see Eunice Hewitson, who is in her 98th year and Trevor Lawrence as past members at the Club for a few hours in the afternoon. Money raised during the day went to the Eyre Peninsula Home Hospice Inc. Before the presentations Gordon Hartley outlined a brief history of the Club and older members had researched memorabilia which was on display. One member had bottles of Port displayed in a glass box which were bottled for the Club over the years since 1985. A Supreme bowls polish and titan bowls grip which were used by Mr Spencer Argent on the original greens on the foreshore in 1925 were donated by Mrs Max Argent (his daughter in law) and presented to the Club by ex-member, Mr Les Hughes to keep for the Club’s Centenary year. Thanks must go to everyone who helped out in any way on this special occasion.

Mount Barker A significant bowling feat, which could possibly be a record for bowls in SA, has occurred at the Mount Barker Bowling Club. In 1963/64 long-time Club member David Chapman won his first Club Championship Pairs and now, 51 years later, has won the same competition with partner David Evans. This must surely be a record? The two Davids then went on to win the Association Champion of Champion Pairs. David Chapman capped off a stellar season by winning both the Club Singles; 36 years after his first win, and the fours Championship. In an illustrious career David was selected to represent SA on 212 occasions over a period of 30 years.

In itself not a unique outcome for a husband and wife to succeed in the same year at the same club. However, what is unusual is that this is the third time that they have achieved this result with their previous successes

Bill Green, Lockleys Past President, and his all male team of handsome waiters in black tie and black aprons transformed the Club with orange, black and silver and then served lunch with great aplomb, skill and flair. After lunch 112 ladies resumed their games with rosy cheeks and great smiles. Thanks to Sandy and Graeme Gaunt for coordinating another memorable event providing our country and metropolitan ladies with an opportunity to come together.

Roger and Beverlee McQuire REGION 12 Ladies Grand Classic On the eve of Men’s Country Carnival, country women competed with outer metropolitan and city teams in the third Ladies’ Grand Classic tournament hosted by Lockleys Bowling Club. Unbiased Opinion provocation has arisen as a defence to a murder charge). Conceptually you can categorise different classes of killing. A cold blooded murder performed for a drug related matter for failure to pay is in a different category to a spur of the moment fight over something that has upset you to a point where you lose control. Same result though.

BEING PROVOCATIVE ABOUT PROVOCATION

A

s I write there is a Bill before the Parliament currently to do away with provocation as a defence in murder cases. The law has evolved over a couple of centuries to a point where provocation is only available as a defence to reduce murder to manslaughter. It is not available as a defence in any other offence but is available as an explanation or something that might be raised in mitigation of what occurred. The current controversy has come about because of a High Court decision in Lindsay. In short the Defendant used a defence of panicking because of an advance made to him by a homosexual that caused him to lose control and kill him. Many would consider this case as bad law. It attracted a lot of adverse attention and I will not repeat the name given to the defence because I do not think it does the issue of provocation justice. The question for the community is whether or not the defence of provocation has evolved to a point where it is no longer relevant to contemporary standards. It evolved because some murders occur where significant provocation occurs. It can and has been argued that such murders are in a different category of killing to those that are done by way of revenge, by way of greed, by way of passion (although even those have historically been quite often used as a the issue of

It could be argued that these categories of killings are still relevant to contemporary society. The Lindsay case reflects but an example of that and one which is highly emotive given the nature of it. Several commentators in South Australia have been reported as querying the defences contemporary value and certainly it will not take much for the current government to fiddle with it. If they see some political advantage. They will undoubtedly see it as an opportunity in the law and order auction which has typified their time in government over the last decade and a half. They are no orphans there. The proponents for change talk about changes to the abolition of the defence in every other jurisdiction. That is not quite accurate but it has certainly been amended and abolished in some jurisdictions but I would say as a product of the law and order auction in my view, not the product of reasonable rational thinking. It is the produce of politically expediency which so many of our laws are now. Provocation has a rational basis for its existence. It does not exist to allow criminals to escape penalty for bad conduct which should gaol them for a lengthy period of time. The penalties for manslaughter are still significant and involve years of your life in detention. It’s complicated also by the fact of mandatory minimum parole period for murder in South Australia is 20 years. So the difference between a manslaughter verdict and a murder verdict would be considerable and in most cases I would imagine up to about 10 years of detention may be the difference. Many killings involve a losing of control occur in circumstances where the people are under great pressure. It is no excuse. It is just a fact. Anyone under the right amount of pressure is capable of doing

anything. The battered wife syndrome is another example of a killing after years of abuse, which reduce the crime to manslaughter. On balance with the fettering of discretion for mandatory minimum periods for non-parole in my view the arguments against abolition are of more force than those for. The Lindsay case was a stark example of an instance of the defence at work but at the end of the day the jury accepted after hearing all of the evidence that there was an element of provocation sufficient to justify the defence being made out. You need to remember that a jury needs to be convinced that the defence is open to it. If not then the defence is of no assistance. Did the jury in Lindsay represent the contemporary standards of modern Australia? Some would say no. Reacting to provocation is part of the human condition. Whether it provides a defence or not provocation will commonly be an element in much offending. When the Bill is voted upon, which is soon, it will be interesting to see whether another right of an accused person has been abolished or whether it can remain open in more limited circumstances. The common law had a flexibility which is appealing to those legally trained and some amendments that have occurred in the United Kingdom reflect a lot of common sense and allow the defence to still survive in certain circumstances which are prescribed. Maybe the answer lies somewhere between the two positions or just may be the common law is still good law. The defence of provocation in certain circumstances will be understandable and excuse murder and down grade the killing to manslaughter. That is the effect of over 100 years of law making. Perhaps it should be left for the Jury to decide, in each particular case.

Questions

1

The Skips in a Pairs game both play their 3rd bowls and then notice that one of the leaders has not played their last bowl. What should happen to this bowl?

2

The coach of Team A constantly gives advice to his players even when Team B’s players are on the mat. Is he allowed to do this?

3

The lead in Team A delivers the jack which passes the 2m mark. Skip A stops the jack assuming it will not go into the ditch and places it on the 2m mark. Skip B objects and calls the umpire to make a decision.

4

The jack is right against the boundary. The last bowl of the end comes to rest on its own rink, very close to the jack. Just as the thirds start to measure the bowl falls of its own accord and pushes the jack over the boundary. One skip wants to replace the bowl and jack while the other skip calls the end dead. Which skip is correct?

5

A player turns the mat over when it became slippery due to showery weather. Is this permitted?

Answers on page 35

Coaches Corner Most of us by now know the importance of drill training, but we also need to be able to practise those drills in a simulated game. We need a game that will put us under pressure, make us focus and concentrate. 12 ENDS GAME TO PRACTISE YOUR SHOT MAKING DRILLS Can be played in singles, pairs, triples and fours REQUIREMENTS • Two teams • One jack • Two mats • Score cards RULES Each end must be played as stated for that end SCORE Closest bowl(s) of one team wins 1 point for each bowl (same as in a pennant game), unless it is stated otherwise. 1. Play a MINIMUM end. Mat on the two metre line. 2. All short bowls in front of the jack will be removed immediately upon coming to rest. All bowls must be behind the jack or jack high including touchers. ALL bowls remaining in front of the jack when the jack is taken back during play including touchers are to be removed if they are not jack high or behind the jack when the jack comes to rest. 3. WINNING SKIP FROM THE LAST END WHEN THE JACK COMES TO REST WILL SPOT THE JACK ON THE CLOSEST BOUNDRY LINE TO THE JACK. Draw all bowls as close to the jack without going out of bounds. 4. POWER PLAY Win this end and you will score double points. e.g. 1 becomes 2; 2 becomes 4; 3 becomes 6.

5. Play a MAXIMUM end. 6. ALL BOWLS ARE TO BE PLAYED FIRST …..One to think about Skips. (Position bowls) The team who won the previous end their lead when all bowls have been played, will roll the jack down to the head. NOTE: Lead stays with the skip on the changeover. • Dead ends do count. If the lead puts the jack out of bounds, too short or in the ditch the Opposition Team will receive 3 points. • When the jack comes to rest the closest bowls are in the count same as in a pennant game. 7. Jack remains where the lead rolls it (not spotted) 8. All bowls are played only on your F/H to the jack. NOTE: A left handed bowler will play the opposite hand 9. NO JACK IS IN PLAY Draw all bowls to the edge of the ditch without losing your bowl. Closest bowl(s) of a team to the ditch without going in scores. 10. All bowls are played only on your B/H to the jack. NOTE: A left handed bowler will play the opposite hand. 11. WINNING SKIP FROM LAST END WILL PLACE JACK NEAR THE DITCH SOMEWHERE BETWEEN THE TWO BOUNDRIES. MAT IS TO BE PLACED AT ¾ LENGTH. First player to take the jack into the ditch will score 3 points for their team. This can be done with either a Yard-on or a Drive. NOTE: Once jack is taken into the ditch the end is finished. If all bowls are played without taking the jack into the ditch then neither team scores. 12. Play as a normal pennant game end
