Welcome Now in its second year, Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival is an exciting new proposition for the town. The Festival is an important element of a wider strategy of Arts Bournemouth, whose role is to drive forward the arts offer of the town, encourage new visitor markets, boost the economy and attract additional cultural industries to the Borough. The annual Festival is just one of Arts Bournemouth’s events helping to make Bournemouth a rich, creative and interesting place to live, work, study and visit. Festival Director’s Introduction I am delighted to present this year’s Festival, where local meets the international, new rubs shoulders with the world renowned and classic and contemporary blend together to create something unique, inspiring and imaginative for the town and its visitors. This year, the Festival has offered new commissions, creating work never shown before, as well as giving space to develop ambitious proposals responding to the spaces and places both in the town centre, and further afield. Festival 2012 Emerging Artists ‘Journeys’ Commissions From an open invitation to submit proposals for new commissions for this year’s Festival, and responding to the theme of journeys, eleven artists’ proposals have been selected and developed. Most are featured during the opening programme; some are for one day and night only, whilst others continue for the Festival’s duration.

Boy Racer Throughout the Festival Lower Gardens This sculptural work “deals with the awkward journey of growing up.” It, however, is a celebration of youth and the particularity of the seafront being a meeting point for the young. The boy racer car is provocatively parked, heavily gilded, adorned with gold and revered as an icon; “A god to a transient group.”

Alternatively named The Modern Prometheus, Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein is arguably the first science fiction novel and is the source of inspiration for this series of special events; music, film, walks, talks, live scores and workshops. Mary Shelley is buried at St. Peter’s Church in Bournemouth alongside her parents, William Godwin and Mary Wollstonecraft, and the remains of the heart of her husband, the romantic poet Percy Bysshe Shelley. A great opportunity to come and visit the wonderful atmospheric and semi-derelict Shelley Manor and Theatre, the former home of the Shelley family.

This process of gradual accumulation has resulted in a meta-artwork, a bastard object or a curatorial monster that mockingly presents a ‘complete’ entity, a Frankensteinian self-portrait drawn from people who have become familiar with Sadotti and his work over a twenty-five year period.

Now Sadotti constructs ‘THIS THIS MONSTER THIS THINGS’ in the semi-derelict Shelley Manor. Among the remains are Simon Martin’s ‘consciousness’, which comes in the form of a real lemon, Georgina Starr’s ‘brain’ made from bubble-gum and a tarot card, and Paul Noble’s spinning, hallucinogenic and multi-faceted ‘left foot and toes’ hewn from polystyrene and plaster.

Using a fascinating mix of found footage and the mercurial compositions of trumpeter Dave Douglas, Bill Morrison matches found silent film with key sequences from Shelley’s novel. Douglas’ score moves from jazz flights to ambient drone, and is as integral as Morrison’s gorgeously distressed and decayed images. The emotional core — what Morrison calls an exploration of “alienation and trying to find love in society” — comes to life in vintage scenes of city crowds and views of nature and domestic life. Much of Morrison’s work is based on actual footage of the 1927 flood, shot on volatile nitrate stock. Footage is pock marked and partially deteriorated, forming part of the aesthetic, giving distorted images associated with the destructive force of the rising water. Frisell has drawn upon his wide musical palette informed by elements of American roots music to provide a superb original score to this moving and historic story. (80 min).

The Gallery at The Arts University College Bournemouth 25 Oct – 30 Nov Preview: Thur 25 Oct. 18.00 – 20.00 with talk at 17.00 – 18.00 Richard William Wheater is a British artist who uses performance and installation to discuss our relationship with the natural environment. Them & Us is a performance project which took place across six locations, including Ferrybridge Power Station, Leicester Botanical Gardens and Yorkshire Sculpture Park. Using a mobile furnace, Wheater produced a number of glass birds, selecting species that had a particular connection with each chosen area, which, once complete, were thrown into the air and allowed to fall and smash, the action captured with beautiful photography by David Lindsawy. But when a corpse is dragged from the moat, the drawings may reveal more than he realised.
