Introduction

Welcome to this year’s festival, which brings another full programme of inspiring and engaging events to enliven the town at the start of the autumn season. The festival gives us a sense of community through a celebration of art and culture, people and place. It shows how important arts and culture are to build a vibrant town, where economy and culture work together to make it both a prosperous and popular place to live, work and visit.

Now in its third year the Bournemouth Arts by the Sea Festival continues to present an extraordinary visitor experience, offering the arts to a wide audience through free events and providing unique performances in unusual places and spaces across Bournemouth.

The Arts University Bournemouth is very pleased to support the festival in its third year. This annual festival brings together a wide community of interest in creative activity and is a recognised showcase of new and established talents. It adds to the reputation of the town as a place where cultural celebration takes place and enhances Bournemouth as a destination for visitors as well as adding to the experience of residents. Where once the arts were a discrete part of the life of our town this initiative is contributing to a new and sustainable vision of Bournemouth in the future.

The Beach

Conceived as both a sculptural work on the outside and a working observatory on the inside, Spiegelei-on-Sea reflects and magically inverts the silent world using the beautifully simple technology of the mirror and the lens. Within, the camera obscura and cyclorama are united and reinvented as an immersive, 360 degree panoramic projection space, illuminating its spherical interior with an upturned living image of the surroundings.

Having created stage sets for The Rolling Stones at this year’s Glastonbury and art directed the London 2012 closing ceremony of the paralympic games, Joe Rush and his Mutoids arrive in Bournemouth for a spectacular performance to open the festival. The Mutoid Waste Company, founded by Joe Rush in 1984, is a collective of artists famed for their groundbreaking arts events. Producing giant installations, sculptures and machines, their Glastonbury ‘Trash City’ and the ‘Unfairground’ were voted the best UK Festival field by the Daily Telegraph and the Times for five consecutive years. A specially created, sculptural parade and performance will open the festival with animatronics, lights, sound and special effects.
