Welcome

to Cape Ann Plein Air 2021! Where do we begin? It’s been a tumultuous time for everyone, hasn’t it? Covid-19 affected all of us in very personal ways. We extend our sympathies to everyone who lost a loved one and send strength to everyone impacted by it. While CAPA2020 Week was postponed, we retained an online presence through our website, social media and emails. We ran a successful online sale in 2020 and sold some gorgeous paintings. We also did Artist Zoom Conversations which were so much fun! Our CAPA 2020 artists became our 2021 artists. Our Plein Air competition is an opportunity for 35 nationally recognized Master Painters to paint for a week, vying for over $20,000 in awards. Our area has long been a destination for painters. We view this event as an opportunity for all of Cape Ann—not only our artists, but our business and community leaders as well—to come together to raise awareness of our important art heritage. We have tremendous support from the following sponsors, whose generosity and commitment to the arts made this year a reality: Collector ($10+K) Engel and Volkers By The Sea; Curator ($5+K) Charles Gallery, Applied Materials and Bazel General Contracting; Muse ($3+K) The Peabody Essex Museum, Apprentice ($1+K) Linzee Coolidge, Cape Ann Savings Bank, Leslie Ray Insurance, Ed Zuker and Judi Rotenberg, Welch and Forbes and The Rotary Clubs of Cape Ann. Our artist awards totaling more than $20K are made possible by the very generous donations from local businesses and our many patrons of the arts. A special thank you to Leslie Lobelll and Erik Timsack for their generous sponsorship of three painting awards totaling $3,200, Charles Gallery for sponsoring the Quick Draw and all its awards totaling $2K, as well as BankGloucester’s $1K award, and many of our other award sponsors. Prize award money goes directly to the artists. We’d also like to thank the many arts organizations, galleries and private locations for hosting events during the week, including Maritime Gloucester, Cape Ann Museum, Cox Reservation, The Glen T. MacLeod Cape Ann YMCA and Sharksmouth Estate. An important aspect of attracting competing and juried artists who travel from all over the United States is the tremendous support from Cape Ann residents who open their homes to the artists for the week, creating lifelong friendships and ensuring that our artists feel welcomed and comfortable. Many thanks! Because of the strong collaboration between the arts, businesses including restaurants and shops, cultural groups and galleries and residents, all of Cape Ann deserves credit for making Cape Ann Plein Air Week 2021 possible. Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation on every level. Please visit CapeAnnPleinAir.com for news about the week as well as updates on the artists. Susan Gould Coviello, Executive Director

Peabody Essex Museum

he mission of the Peabody Essex Museum is to celebrate outstanding artistic and cultural creativity by collecting, stewarding and interpreting objects of art and culture in ways that increase knowledge, enrich the spirit, engage the mind and stimulate the senses. Through its exhibits, programs, publications, media and related activities, PEM strives to create experiences that transform people’s lives. PEM is one of the nation’s major museums for Asian art. It presents the earliest collections of Native American and Oceanic art in the nation. The historic houses and gardens, and American decorative art and maritime art collections provide an unrivaled spectrum of New England’s heritage over 300 years. This summer, Cape Ann Plein Air and PEM collaborated to bring CAPA2021 artists to workshops on the famed Derby Wharf to lead workshops for artists of all levels and abilities. In two days more than 50 artists gathered to watch John Caggiano and Susan Lynn demonstrate their plein air talents, and then created paintings of their own. This collaboration is an important one and CAPA is thrilled that PEM has chosen to partner with us in such a meaningful way.

he Cape Ann Museum tells multiple stories, all relating to a single remarkable place. From its earliest days as a fishing and shipping post to its mid-19th century role in the granite industry, to its singular charms of light and sea that have attracted countless artists from the 19th century to the present, Cape Ann boasts a rich and varied culture of significant historical, industrial and artistic achievement. The museum’s fine art collection includes the largest grouping of works by native son and renowned marine artist Fitz Henry Lane as well as other prominent painters and sculptors who lived on, visited or were inspired by Cape Ann. The permanent collection includes fine and decorative arts, and artifacts from the major industries of the area—the fisheries and granite quarrying. During the week, Cape Ann Plein Air and CAM will feature CAPA2021 artists painting on the famed Cape Ann Museum Green, home to three historic properties. Artists will paint along with students and their art will be for sale that afternoon. CAPA is thrilled with this new collaboration with such a renowned museum located in our own back yard!

A TRIBUTE TO

Greg LaRock

W

Neal Levy

e lost a good friend and great painter in 2020. Greg was a CAPA 2019 award-winning artist and he will be missed by all who knew him. May his memory be a blessing. Greg LaRock won numerous awards, including Best of Show at Easton Plein Air, Florida’s Forgotten Coast Plein Air Invitational and Sonoma Plein Air. He was also awarded Artist Choice at the Maui Plein Air Invitational, first place at Door County Plein Air Invitational, and the Distinctive Merit Award at the Laguna Beach Plein Air Invitational. Greg was a signature member of AIS, ASMA, LPAPA and OPA. He has been profiled in PleinAir Magazine, Southwest Art and included in a Jack Richeson Fine Art book.

“ My goal is to bridge the gap between representation and painterly expression. Having my work ‘feel real’ without being a photographic copy of the subject.Working from life is the only way to properly study light, value and form as nature intended and it’s my job to paint that artistic impression of the landscape and turn it into a work of art.” 18 CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR 2021

But it was 2009 when she found a home in painting oils en plein air. “I call myself a ‘Nostalgic Impressionist’ as a way of identifying the subjects and style of painting that interest me most. No matter which part of America I paint, I am really passionate about plein

air and allow myself to get lost in the wonderful process of it all!” Kathie resides with her husband and maintains a studio in the mountains of East Tennessee. She travels extensively, exhibiting in fine art shows throughout the nation, teaching workshops and participating in plein air events. Kathie’s original works have sold internationally and she is quite proud of her gallery representation.

Mat Barber Kennedy Chicago, IL

“F

or almost 30 years I have been drawing and painting ageing machines, tools and buildings. I am particularly fascinated by junctions of materials and by the corrosive relationship between designed objects, patterns of use and the passage of time. My work explores the world that we have built, constructed in layers, adapted over generations and decaying in pieces. People are conspicuously absent from my paintings, but are always present by implication. Occupants die or move on, they put up signs and go out of business. Children throw stones and touch door frames which get dirty by the handle. Tools are used, bear scars and grow weary with the years of service. Through drawing and painting I am engaged in the archeology of material culture, inspecting, exploring and celebrating physical manifestations of human history. I think of my work as a love song. “I am a fellow of the Royal Society of Arts and an elected member of Britain’s Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolours and the American Impressionist Society. In 2008, I was awarded the Turner Medal in London for my work. I live and work in Chicago with my wife and family.” matbarberkennedy.com 26 CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR 2021

“W

hether painting outside or in the studio, painting is a celebration of the beauty that surrounds us. I paint pictures of the things that touch me in some way. The scenes that move me, objects that I have some connection to. It might be an arrangement of colors that, like a chord played on a piano and are pleasing to the ear, have a similar effect visually, pleasing the eye. “I started this journey painting in watercolor. After 10 years, I decided I needed to expand into oil. There are so many subjects that seem to be better suited to oil. “When I began painting, I did almost everything en plein air. I find myself drawn to this type of approach more often lately. There is an integrity to a painting that is the result of direct observation that is seldom matched in the studio.”

Beth Bathe Lancaster, PA

B

eth Bathe’s representational paintings have been described by art critics as “evoking nostalgia, like that of an old sepia toned photograph, often with just touches of color.” Curiosity about the medium Beth works is often the first question of many viewers. Is it watercolor, is it oil? Beth’s answer: “somewhat both.” She works with water mixable oil colors in a limited palette, using brushes and unconventional tools. Beth crisscrosses the country, painting en plein air and participates in over 10 high-profile juried and invitation national competitions a year. She loves the travel and catching up with her artist friends who are often compared to “carnies”, traveling from competition to competition. alerie Craig has drawn and painted nearly all her life. Known for her impressionist approach to color and light, Craig is captivated by both urban and rural landscapes. Like most artists, Craig continues to be a student of art, always reaching for a higher level of excellence, while discovering and expressing her own voice In 1998, Craig left her career in psychiatric nursing administration to pursue her dream of painting full-time. She feels that her best expressions happen when she is on location and can directly sense the mood and atmosphere of a particular scene. Whether painting vast open areas or intimate spaces, she finds that capturing light and color is best accomplished through close observation and careful study. Craig paints out of doors whenever she can and finds great inspiration in her familiar Pennsylvania landscape. Always curious, she travels out west and to Ireland, the seacoast for new ideas. You can’t move from one town to another in New England without having to resist one more fabulous vista after another. “I hope to have the good fortune of continuing to paint with my fellow artists for many more years, creating and inspiring works that move those with a passion for this exhilarating land we call home, and to impassion those who have yet to experience it. Ann Larsen Northville, NY

H

aving done hundreds of small sketches and paintings, Ann thinks the landscape process is more about what you don’t say then what you do say. These small studies are then used as references to create larger works in the studio. Using bold brush strokes and textural paint, she interprets in an impressionistic manner what nature provides. Larsen states that “working from nature is both exciting and challenging, but ultimately there is a dichotomy between painting and creating a work of art that hopefully collectors respond to. I strive to create a feeling of time and place in each painting.”

y fascination with art, with painting, is a fascination with brain science and the power and plasticity of the brain. I focus on the link between the eye and the brain. The brain assimilates volumes of visual information in every moment and can translates it into a feeling or an experience within seconds. For me, painting is this process in slow motion. The challenge is not to lose this glimpse, this feeling, this experience, in the translation. The challenge is to provide just enough information to capture that moment. I paint with this delightful, ceaseless challenge all around me.” Deke holds a B.S. in mathematics from UW Madison and an M.B.A. from UC Berkeley. Richard Sneary Kansas City, MO

“I

began painting as an artist, primarily en plein air, in 2011, after nearly 40 years as an architectural illustrator and architect. I started drawing when I was 5 or 6 years old—dogs and horses at first, later cars, planes, buildings and whatever sparked my interest. Architecture was my first love. “I love painting and drawing most any subject, but I love watercolor for its incredible luminosity (and because I’m an architect and we don’t know anything better), the challenge of visualizing and planning the lights and darks backwards, the ability to work quickly with loose washes, or to slow down and provide sharpness where I need or want it. Watercolor has the natural ability to become simple and complex washes of one or more colors without looking fussy and it can also be sharply articulate with marks and calligraphy. “I find that painting en plein air is more productive, to me anyway, then starting in the studio. I have had the good fortune to paint with some of the best painters in the country. It’s been a boatload of fun and an incredible learning experience, and a hell of a way to spend my time!” richardsneary.fineartstudioonline.com 56 CAPE ANN PLEIN AIR 2021

eorge Van Hook was born and raised in Abington, Pennsylvania. He began painting early and was able to participate in the vibrant artistic culture of the region. George has spent summers painting in the mid-coast area of Rockport Harbor, and on North Haven Island where his wife’s property is adjacent to the famous Boston artist Frank Benson. Van Hook spent summers during high school filmmaking throughout France and England, allowing him to visit great museums and increase his commitment to become a professional artist. Following college, he left for Paris and spent a year traveling through Europe. George returned to the East Coast, settling in Cambridge, New York, a beautiful 19th century village in the Battenkill River Valley. Van Hook thinks of his paintings as a visual response to the selected environment: landscape, figure or still life. His paintings are a marriage of external and internal forces—what emerges on the canvas is a reflection of both the beauty of the world and the artist’s most inner response.
