Acknowledgments & Thanks

Welcometo Cape Ann Plein Air 2022!

Our Plein Air competition is an opportunity for 35 nationally recognized Master Painters to paint for a week, vying for over $20,000 in awards. Our area has long been a destination for painters. We view this event as an opportunity for all of Cape Ann—not only our artists, but our business and community leaders as well—to come together to raise awareness of our important art heritage.

We have tremendous support from the following sponsors, whose generosity and commitment to the arts made this year a reality: Curator ($5+K) Charles Gallery, Applied Materials, Beauport Hospitality, Bazel General Contracting and New England BioLabs; Apprentice ($1+K) Cape Ann Savings Bank, Bank Gloucester, Leslie Ray Insurance, Epiphany Gallery, Karen Berger and Sullco. Our artist awards totaling more than $20K are made possible by the very generous donations from local businesses and our many patrons of the arts. A special thank you to Charles Gallery for sponsoring the Quick Draw and all its awards, and many of our other award sponsors. Prize award money goes directly to the artists.

We’d also like to thank the many arts organizations, galleries and private locations for hosting events during the week, including The Essex County Greenbelt Cox Reservation, Hammond Castle, Essex Shipbuilding Museum, Crane Estate and Sharksmouth Estate.

An important aspect of attracting competing and juried artists who travel from all over the United States is the tremendous support from Cape Ann residents who open their homes to the artists for the week, creating lifelong friendships and ensuring that our artists feel welcomed and comfortable. Many thanks!

Because of the strong collaboration between the arts, businesses including res taurants and shops, cultural groups and galleries and residents, all of Cape Ann deserves credit for making Cape Ann Plein Air Week 2022 possible. Thank you for your enthusiasm and participation on every level.

Please visit CapeAnnPleinAir.org for news about the week as well as updates on the artists.

Greenbelt: Cox Reservation

Essex County Greenbelt’s Allyn Cox Reservation, located on the marshes in Essex, boasts stunning views of a breathtaking New England salt marsh, with an open field, bordered by hedgerow on the edge of a tidal estuary in the Great Marsh ecosystem. Nature enthusiasts, dog walkers, painters, canoers and birders visit throughout the seasons. Ospreys are often seen in a nesting platform in spring and summer.

The property was settled by 1648 as a colonial salt marsh farm and for more than 350 years was a dairy farm and apple orchard. Greenbelt headquarters is located here and serves as a venue for many events, such as the annual Art in the Barn exhibition.

Dogwood, cherry, pear and apple blossoms make for a fragrant spring while hickory, sumac and goldenrod create a golden aura in autumn.

Shorebirds feed on the mud flats, and osprey, herons, egrets and kingfishers dine richly in the salt marsh. The old hayfields surrounding the house and barns are home to bobolinks, meadowlarks and bluebirds.

The property was donated to Greenbelt by noted muralist Allyn Cox, whose work graces the U.S. Capitol Building. In 1940, Cox bought our current property as his summer home and made the barn into an art studio. He donated the property to Greenbelt in 1974.

MISSION

Hammond Castle

First time visitors are often surprised to see a true European castle on the New England shoreline. Hammond Castle was built in the late 1920s by scientist, inventor and, interestingly enough, an art connoisseur of the highest order, John Hays Hammond, Jr. (1888–1965). Sitting high on a bluff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean, the castle brings together a unique combination of art, architectural elements and culture, backstopped by many innovative technological applications, yet unknown and unseen by the visitor.

Hammond was widely traveled, and had been exposed to the art and architecture of Europe at an early age. He appreciated the eras spanning ancient times, through the medieval period and into the Renaissance. He purchased a broad collection of artifacts for display, and created his residence around large stone archways, windows, wooden facades and other architectural elements from the Old World. He was aptly described as a man of the future, but who chose to live in the past. The building he left behind is one of the truly unique structures on this continent, where visitors can experience being immersed in a true old Europe environment without actually being there.

Hammond Castle Museum is now in its 47th consecutive season. Last season, nearly 40,000 guests from across the United States and the world visited. The Museum has also been the setting for numerous movies and television shows, commercials and specials. It’s also a popular and gorgeous location for weddings.

A TRIBUTE TO David P. Curtis

Cape Ann Plein Air wanted to honor long-time plein air painter David Curtis, so we asked Judith Curtis, David’s wife, to share his legacy with all of us.

When Gloucester artist David P. Curtis passed away last year, the plein air art world lost one of its most enthusiastic practitioners. Nine months on, David is sorely missed, not just as a fine landscape painter, but also as one of the few painters conducting weekly drop-in outdoor classes. For almost 30 years, on a Saturday, you would find David at the Essex County Greenbelt Association’s Allyn Cox Reservation offering outdoor oil painting instruction. He inspired a host of students to try painting landscapes outdoors, from personal observation rather than working in the studio.

Although David loved nothing more than setting up his easel to paint for himself, he strongly believed that if you had the knowledge and expertise, it was incumbent on you to share that experience. Consequently, David dedicated a good part of his career to sharing his knowledge and enthusiasm with every art student he met.

David was a past President of the Rockport Art Association & Museum (twice) as well as an active member of the North Shore Arts Association and the Guild of Boston Artists. His work received numerous awards during his lifetime, but in 2019, the artist himself received the Albert Nelson Marquis Lifetime Achievement Award for longevity and unwavering excellence in the field of art.

David was a popular and inspirational teacher to countless artists who remember him for his sense of humor, enthusiasm, generosity and kindness. But most of all, he will be remembered for his dedication to the arts. Ultimately, painting was David’s life and driving passion.

“Learning to see should be the goal for which all painters strive, whether they are just beginning or have painted for many years. The guiding principles for this study include the natural vision; tone and color; light and shade; form, atmosphere and focus. Most important for the outdoor painter is the study of values.”

Jason has also had featured articles in publica tions such as Southwest Art Magazine, International Artist, Artist Magazine and PleinAir Magazine

“I am a contemporary representational

painter, working primarily out doors. I paint what catches my interest in the moment. This could be almost anything; an orchestra tion of shapes, color contrast, light and shadow patterns, a mood or atmosphere, a subject I have never triedor a subject I enjoy. I am drawn to paint places and things that say something about the day and time I live in now. Although my work is not necessarily subject driven, I find myself painting the overlooked and simultaneously familiar as pects of everyday life—scenes we pass by but rarely take the time to fully consider. In the chaos of daily life, I believe we all take the simple and familiar for granted. Some times it is these quiet, unadorned places that make the most worthy subjects.”

Leon Doucette

Leon Doucette was born and raised in Glouces ter, Massachusetts, in a house filled to the brim with his late grandfather’s paintings. For him, these paintings served as a gateway into an earlier era, the point of departure for a lifelong dialogue spoken in the language of paint.

Upon graduation in 2011 from the New Hampshire Institute of Art, Leon returned to his hometown and joined the staff of the Cape Ann Museum. He re mains with the Museum today, serving as its assistant curator. Though engaged fulltime at the museum, Leon’s off hours are spent painting and drawing. Through his artwork, he strives to explore the common

alities of the human experience, especially those that linger across generations. His technique leans heavily on seeing, as he strives to balance form and atmosphere.

His work has been shown around New England, as well as in New York, California and Washington, D.C. He has been featured multiple times as a finalist in the Art Renewal Center International Salon Competition, has been shown by the Society of Illustrators in its Manhattan gallery, and has won First Place Drawing at the Portrait Society of America’s Annual International Portrait Competition and a gold medal at the Guild of Boston Artists Regional Juried Exhibition in 2018.

The joy of painting came to Ebrahim at the early age of 13 when he started exploring nearby galleries and exhibitions. He sensed strong artistic talents awaken within him. After passionately exploring different art media, he won prizes in local art competitions and began studying under the supervision of a local master. At age 17, he was admitted to the prestigious Kamal-al-Molk Arts Institute and fortunately had a chance to have one the Russian masters Alexander as teacher for a short time. That critical period laid the foundation for his art career.

“Over 40 years of experience and a constant struggle to find real artistic excellence has helped me break many technical boundaries. My portfolio features still life, impressionistic landscapes and dream-like modern paintings. In my newest projects, I want to let my viewers experience a unique and innovative painting style. In fact, I’m working on a seamless blend of the fading traditions of the ancient masters with progressive modern plein air practices.

“How to create a good work of art? Gratefully borrow an idea from nature, patiently nurture it with skill and experience, and finally touch it with my soul…a way other than this, I do not know.”

Natalia Andreeva

Fl

Natalia Andreeva emerged as an artist from the rich and fertile artistic climate of Novosibirsk, in Siberia after graduating from its most prestigious art college. During her classical education in the canons of European art, she was greatly influenced by eastern philosophy. Consequentially, Natalia’s work is a harmonious marriage between spontaneous expressions and classical realism.

Among Natalia’s favorite themes are exquisite landscapes, depicting the subtlety of nature and still life, where vibrant shapes and internal dynamics are shown in contrast to commonplace subjects, and finally, figures and portraits brimming with humanity, giving testament to the beauty and harmony of the human condition.

Natalia holds Signature Membership status in the American Impressionist Society.

Mat Barber Kennedy

or more than 20 years I have been drawing and painting ageing machines, tools and buildings. Through the process of drawing and painting I am engaged in the archeology of material culture, inspecting, exploring and celebrating physical manifestations of human history. People are conspicuously absent from my paintings, but are always present by implication. Generations move on, put up signs and go out of business. Children throw stones and touch door frames which get dirty by the handle. Tools bear scars and grow weary with years of service. I am fascinated by the corrosive relationship between the design of objects, the evidence of use and the passage of time.

“F

“My work is almost entirely executed on location or from direct observation of objects in the studio. I seldom use photographs for anything other than an aide mem oire, or as a record of specific details that I cannot capture due to time constraints in the field. I want to capture the spirit of a place. I love the Eiffel Tower as much as the next man, but its not the essence of what it feels like to be in Paris and to experience Parisian life. That is found in the graphics, the mansard roofs, the space between the windows, the communal entrances to apartment buildings, the bus stops, the street names and building numbers, the folding chairs and the newsstands. It’s those, everyday pieces that I want to celebrate in my work, hopefully revealing their dignity and importance through the energy of my composition and mark making. My paint ings are love songs to a place and the people who made it what it is.”

ARTIST

David Bareford

gloucester, ma

David Bareford was born and raised in New Jersey and spent his summers on Barnegat Bay, Lake Champlain and Long Island Sound, fishing, swimming and sailing. Always interested in drawing and painting, he was dubbed an artist by friends in grammar school. He began to paint soon after graduation from the University of Montana. Moving from New Jersey to Rockport, Massachusetts, he became a part of that historic seaside artist colony. New England had worked its magic on another young painter intent on finding his place in the world of art. He explains, “I felt a strong connection with Cape Ann right from the start. Many of the painters I admired lived and worked here. I am still inspired by their legacy.”

Beginning as a watercolorist, Bareford concentrated on plein air painting. Study ing the ever-changing effects of light and shadow on the rich subject matter yielded satisfying results. His work was soon included in the shows hosted by Allied Artists of America, the American Watercolor Society and the National Academy of Design. Bareford quickly gained national recognition for his work as well as membership in significant art organizations.

Eventually, Bareford began to transition to oil painting, knowing that the oil medium has none of the restrictions that are inherent with traditional watercolor tech nique, and many advantages. It is here that he has found his niche as his success so aptly demonstrates. His unique ability to “capture the moment” as well as his rich use of color are noteworthy. “The human eye is many times more sensitive than a camera in its ability to see value and color. When painting from life you are able to respond in a way that is impossible otherwise.” Certainly, it is that sensitivity and the vitality of his painting which captivates his audience. The artist reflects for a moment: “I’m trying to be technically excellent in the craft of painting as well as an artist in the way I approach my material. There’s always more to learn.”

In 1980, I moved to Rockport, Massachusetts and opened a gallery on Bearskin Neck, now in its 40th year. Every year I participate in up to a dozen national plein air events.

“Interesting fact: I was an Extra (Supernumerary) in New York City Opera. Now my greatest joy is painting with friends and colleagues who live and breathe art.”

Eric Jacobsen was born and raised in New England. He received a B.A. in history from Gordon College in Wenham, Massacusett in 1989 and studied fine art at the Lyme Academy of Fine Arts in Old Lyme, Connecticut from 1991–1995. At the Academy, he received training in the Beaux Arts tradition of drawing and painting from life.

Eric’s true inspiration is the amazing beauty that he sees in nature. Jacobsen is a plein air painter. He takes his oils wherever he goes, setting up on site, working until his painting is finished. “It is most important to me that my paintings convey a certain mood,” Eric says. “I want them to be felt by the viewer without his or her having to analyze or think about them. As a general rule, I try to find strong compositions in nature and then paint the scene accurately while leaving out any extraneous details which would only busy up the painting and detract from the strength of the piece as a whole. My painting process consists of finding a painting site and setting up to paint a couple hours, or until the light has changed. For larger paintings, I will return on consecutive days at the same time, under similar lighting conditions to finish a piece.”

Brian Keeler

Expressing and describing the beauty of light has been the focus of Brian Keeler’s career in painting, which includes landscape, the figure, portraits, still life and allegorical work. Depicting the “topography of light” is the way he likes to describe this process, as this phrase communicates the way light plays across forms and desribes their shapes. In the mutifaceted expressions of both the light and the subjects, we appreciate through Keeler’s paintnigs a specific location.

Though we recognize the locales and subjects of his work, we are led to enjoy the formal qualities of the act of painting for its own merit.

In a certain sense, however, the light actually becomes the subject for Keeler and the scene or depiction takes on a secondary or supporting role. He often chooses the “Golden Hour” as the time for portraying the motifs he selects, as this late afternoon or early morning light accentuates the drama of any given scene. His figurative painting and other genres also incorporate a marvelous appreciation for the way light can reveal the world to us.

Kari Ganoung Ruiz was raised at the edge of The Finger Lakes National Forest in Central New York State, which set the stage for her deep connection to the natural landscape. After receiving her B.S. in fine art painting from Ashland University in Ohio, Kari and her husband, stereo photographer Diego Ruiz, opened a picture framing studio and gallery featuring fine art. An encouraging response to her work prompted more space at the boutique to be used to display paintings, and eventually the move to a much larger location. The increased visibility of the new gallery began to cut into studio hours. At this time, Kari began to focus on plein air work, feeling the need to learn about light and shadow directly from the natural world. In 2014, the couple moved the gallery online in order to allow both of them to travel and move forward with their artistic careers.

Kari and Diego now travel the U.S. in their camper van “The Cap’n,” capturing the landscape as they experience it. Whether having a stare down with a wolf in Yellowstone, camping outside a panadería in Santa Cruz for Champurrado, roll ing down the palm tree and sea grape-lined A1A in Florida, or sleeping through a tornado in Missouri, it’s always an adventure! Picturemaking just seems so natural. Each painting is a prolonged medita tion on beauty. That’s what my work is about. I’m always looking for the combination of qualities that please the senses. There’s a lightness and a simplicity to things we regard as beautiful. And sometimes those characteristics are fleeting. But that’s what I look for when searching out new ideas. It happens that I am drawn to coastal scenery. So, I find most of my subjects at or near the water. But it’s the characteristic qualities of beauty that I’m after. I especially like backlit subjects. Such strong lighting makes for dramatic impact.”

Rokhaya Waring has been drawing from nature since she could hold a pencil, and her sketchbooks form a record of her French-American family’s moves around the world: from Sante Fe, where she was born, to Florence, then Paris, and back to the U.S. But Cape Ann, where she grew up, and Provence, where she spent every summer for nearly 20 years, hold special places in her heart. The hay rolls of Provence, which she painted while using her old Renault 18 as an easel and shield against the mistral winds, and the gathering clouds over the ocean in Gloucester, where she lived for another 13 years, are two of her iconic subjects.

Waring’s love of nature, travel and plein air are deep-rooted, so it’s no surprise that in the spring of 2021, she sold her house in Gloucester to move into a vintage Safari Trek motorhome and headed south to explore—and find new vistas to paint. She currently resides in Clyde, North Carolina with her husband and two whippets, and is enjoying the spectacular view of the Blue Ridge Mountains from her balcony, which is rapidly becoming one of her new favorite subjects.

Waring earned her B.A. in fine art/art history from Princeton, and is a member of Oil Painters of America, the American Impressionist Society, North Shore Arts and the Rocky Neck Art Colony. She has shown all over the world, in France, Israel, Tahiti and the U.S., notably the Salon des Artistes Français, the Salon d’Automne and the Currier Museum of Art. She is also featured in the books 100 Artists of New England (Schiffer, 2011) and The American Flag in Contemporary Art (Schiffer, 2015).
