Redefining industry-leading vision At SP, we seek always to expand the technological boundaries of dynamo technology. The new 7 series hub dynamo is our next generation product for the QR12 thru-axle application and the offspring of the 8X series. It represents a clear improvement over its predecessors incorporating not only cutting edge dynamo technology, but also premium mechanical design. In creating the 7 series hub, intelligent lightweight construction was tempered throughout with painstaking attention to compact build. The compact form factor optimizes for balance and yet attains an unprecedented weight of only 399g. The 7 series is pioneering industry-leading vision. It is the lightest QR12 thru-axle dynamo hub currently available.

6

We’ve never stopped inventing SP has always been committed to creating the best. Each year, we further expand the frontiers of dynamo technology. Since creation of the 1st generation QR12 thru-axle 8X-M series hub dynamo, we have never ceased efforts to improve it! The 7 series hub dynamo is the culmination of this intensive two year effort and represents a premium departure from the 8X-M. While offering the same 6V3W output as the 8X, the 7 series manages an amazing weight loss of 60g across comparable specifications. Did we mention the lightest specification is a mere 399g! The 7 series defines an entirely new vision of hub dynamos weaving innovation, style and craft into reality.

Smart, Slim and Superb The QR12 thru-axle standard is gaining popularity in the world of road and trekking bikes. Although QR12 thru-axle hubs are mechanically stronger than standard hubs (9mm QR), they also require the use of narrower bearings. This is due to the 12mm diameter hollow axle and 6 bolt disc brake specification which simultaneously constrain both the inner and outer diameter of QR12 hub bearings. It is towards this constraint that SP engineers have devoted considerable time, energy and resources. The product was a “secret” mechanical design strategy to overcome this technical challenge. For the 7 series, this has meant a bearing assembly that is as durable as that of the 8 series. Combining advanced dynamo design and cutting edge technology, the exterior dimensions, i.e. spoke P.C.D and flange diameter are identical for both 8 and 7 series hubs.

9

The only difference is the max hub diameter of the 7 series (59mm), which is 1mm larger than that of the 8 series (58mm). Interestingly, the axle is the easiest reference point for distinguishing the 7 from the 8 series hubs. The 7 series defines smart, slim and superb. The core dynamo of 7 series exemplifies the purity of SP philosophy – Small, but Powerful. Never look back. We look forward to continuing the development of advanced technology. We engineer innovative spirit into all SP products. To improve the attractiveness of our hub dynamos to a broader audience, we have developed QR12 hubs for 6 bolt disc, center-lock and rim brake specifications. We invite all QR12 enthusiasts to join SP family. Enjoy SP’s passion for excellence in your riding experience.

Break the constrain. Create the best. The SP 8-series hub dynamo incorporates the best technical advancements and seeks to attain perfection in field of hub dynamos. Painstaking innovation has made an optimal hub dynamo reality. The SP-8’s technological advances are well hidden under it durable shell. The intelligent light weight design was tempered throughout with painstaking attention to structural performance. The smooth oval shape of the hub was optimised for balance, while attaining an unprecedented weight only 350g.

Jesse Carlsson finished 2nd in the Taur Divide Mountain Bike Race in June 2013. And he finished 1st in the Trans Am Bike Race in 2015. Riders in the endurance races typically arry a number of electronic devices, but when trying to achieve big daily mileages, there’s little time to charge these devices. In the past, hub dynamos have been too inefficient for riders to consider in the race. This has changed with the new generation of dynamo technology that SP has been instrumental in bringing to the maket. Jesse Carlsson It is always exciting at off road condition.

Xtreme Dynamo Hub

The acme of perfection

The 8X is the union of a precision 6V3W dynamo with the modern 15mm thru-axle(6 bolt or centerlock) disc specification. It is perfected integration of “bleeding edge technology and muscular aesthetics. Not only the most efficient in its class, the 8X is also the lightest in weight. With premium surface treatment and design, the 8X is gorgeous in motion and striking at standstill. The 8X did not take industry standards at the basis for design. It sought to surpass them to the extent possible in every respect. Not stopping at slipping a 15mm thru-axle into a tested hub dynamo design, the 8X incorporates inter alia increased bearing diameters for added mechanical strength and expanded flange distances for more resilient wheel builds. It is our pleasure to present the 8X to you.

New 8X Is Released In 2017 Our QR12 and QR15 thru axle hubs are required to employ narrower bearings than standard hubs (9mm QR). This is due to the 15mm diameter hollow axle and 6 bolt disc brake specification which simultaneously constrain both the inner and outer diameters of the hub’s bearings. In theory, 15mm suspension folks with QR15 thru-axle hubs should be stronger than standard. In practice, mechanical design limitations have reduced bearing size and thus durability.

27

SP engineers have devoted considerable time and resources to creating a mechanical design strategy for overcoming this technical challenge. These efforts have culminated in an innovative mechanical design relying on superior quality bearings and precision assembly processes. Our computer aided modeling simulations indicate that we have perfected the interplay between bearing and limited internal space, making the new 8X bearing assembly as durable as the time tested – and proven – 8 Series hubs. Formally released in 2017, we stand behind the newest version of our 8X dynamo hubs.

Suitable for all different sized wheels SP 9 series got the approval from new German StVZO 6V1.5W LED regulation from wheel size 20” to 28“. However, its real output is much higher than 1.5w. From wheel size 400mm(16”) to 535mm(20“): The 9 series output perfectly matches German StVZO 6V3W/20” regulation. As can be seen from the table, from wheel size 400mm(16”) to 535mm(20”), the 9 series output is designed to meet StVZO 6V3W regulation. From wheel size 646mm(26”) to 716mm(28”): According to German StVZO 6V3W, it requires 3V output at a low speed of 5km/h. If the 9 series is set on wheel sizes of 646mm(26”) and 716mm(28”), it offers 3V output speed at 5.8km/h and 6.4km/h respectively. To have 3V output, it only needs to slightly increase speed up to 1.4km/h. Furthermore, according to German StVZO 6V3W regulation, it requires 5.7V output at 15km/h. If we set the 9 series on wheel sizes of 646mm(26”) and 716mm(28”), this 9 series offers 5.7V output when speed at 15.7km/h and 17.7 km/h respectively. To have 5.7V output, it only needs to increase speed up to 2.7km/h. As for 6V3W, the German StVZO approved hubs in the current market normally offer 6V3W output when speed around 17km/h. The SP 9 series offers 6V3W output for 646mm(26”) and 716mm(28”) wheels when speed at 16.7km/h and 18.6km/h respectively. Only needs to increase speed up to 1.6km/h. Tour Divide Mountain Bike Race A non stop, self supported mountain bike race Is a solo, self-supported ultra-cycling challenge to race all 2,745 miles of Adventure Cycling Association’s epic Great Divide Mountain Bike Route. There are no compulsory rest periods or specified distances racers must travel daily. The race clock runs non-stop. He or she who can ride the fastest while making fewer, shorter stops usually wins. With an average time-to-completion of three weeks in the saddle, this grand tour is the longest, most challenging mountain bike race on the planet. It’s a contest for the ultra-fit but only if ultra-prepared for myriad contingencies of backcountry biking. The Great Divide Route is geographically divided into five regions. The diverse nature of the regions makes for an incredible visual, sometimes spiritual experience. The route offers something different every day — whether it be riding conditions, scenery, points of interest, or folks along the way. It is a route to be enjoyed for its diversity. 3. Spirit: Above all, attempts are intended to be solo / self-supported, self-timed, and observed as one stage, i.e. the clock runs non-stop. The challenge is complete upon arrival to the opposite GDMBR terminus from start. There are no required checkpoints or designated rest periods on course. There is no finish time cut-off, however, current convention considers a competitive Divide Route finish time as approximately 1.5 times (x) course records. Currently this = 25days (~110 mi/day) for men, and 29.5 days (93 mi/day) for women.

and finishing about 4500km later on the US/Mexico border in New Mexico

4. Modus operandi: To complete the Route, a rider may resupply food / equipment, rent a room, launder clothing, even service their bike at commercial shops along the way. The intent is to ride unsupported between towns, and function self-supported when in towns. Any services utilized must always be commercially available to all challengers and not pre-arranged. Sarah Hammond Origin: Melbourne, Australia Below is the information written by Jesse Carlsson. She was the first woman to “everest” a mountain by bike. She did it by riding up Mount Buffalo eight times in 18 hours, notching up 9,031 metres of climbing along the way. Since then she’s completed a few more everesting missions, both on and off roads. In late 2015 she rode non-stop 800 km from Melbourne to Adelaide in thirty-something hours. Sarah is new to ultra-endurance racing and this will be her first ultra-endurance race. Sure she doesn’t have the experience of her competitors but that could work in her favour. She’ll do things in her way, learning as she goes. She’s proven plenty of times that she’s tough enough to deal with the suffering that she’ll face along the way.

The warranty does not cover damages in the following cases. ~Mis-installation: The warranty will not cover damage caused by mis-installation. Before using SP dynamo hubs, please ensure proper installation as mis-installation can result in damage to hubs. Please make sure that the hub is properly installed to your fork. If the quick release (QR) is not properly adjusted and securely fastened, the hub may be damaged. When installing an SP dynamo hub, the wiring plug must be securely fastened to the plastic base connector on the hub in a manner that the connector assembly and wiring are not under stress. Should the hub axle rotate and stress the connector (often due to insufficient tension in the adjustment of the QR), it is important to realign the wiring harness by loosening the QR and adjusting the wiring so it is not under stress - and increasing the tension adjustment of the QR so it does not rotate under use. ~Accident: Instances where the hub is struck by foreign objects in an accident are not considered normal use circumstances and are not covered under the SP warranty. For example, the plastic connector base may be damaged when struck by a stone in a crash‌ ~Improper maintenance: SP hubs are explicitly not user serviceable. Please do not attempt to service the hub. Unauthorized repair or modification will void this warranty. This includes any form of disassembly of the hub or its parts. SP hubs are not designed to withstand pressure washing - which can be detrimental to the hub bearings. ~Abnormal use circumstances: The hub should not be used for abnormal riding. For example, bearings are not 100% waterproof. SP hubs are not suitable for crossing rivers where the waterline rises above the hub.

OTHER INFORMATION If defect occurs outside the warranty period or does not meet warranty conditions, we offer out-of-warranty service. This standard maintenance service can be ordered at the SP online store. During the warranty period, SP will service under warranty bearings that are not defective but have simply worn out due to extensive use. This standard maintenance service can be ordered at the SP online store.
