Grandma Christman’s Sugar Cookies Diana Judah Felice
1 cup margarine 1 ½ c powdered sugar 1/4 tsp almond flavoring 1 tsp vanilla 1 egg, slightly beaten 2 ½ c flour (Gold Medal) 1/4 tsp salt 1 tsp baking soda 1 tsp cream of tartar Cream margarine, powdered sugar and flavorings. Add egg and stir. Add dry ingredients. Mix well. Chill dough. Roll out and cut into shapes. (May use powdered sugar in place of flour when rolling out dough.) Placeon ungreased cookie sheets and bake at 350 for 7 to 10 minutes. May be frosted and decorated when cooled if desired. Frosting: 2 c powdered sugar 4 T butter 1 T vanilla 1 ½ T milk Melt butter. Add remaining ingredients and mix well. More sugar or milk may be added if necessary for consistency. Add food coloring if desired.

Dear Kansas City Parents, I am sitting at home with tears running down my face. My brother, a pediatrician from Rochester, New York just wrote to tell me that one of his patients, a two year old, drowned in an above ground pool at day care.
Ten years ago, I went to my brother when I wanted to get involved with Infant Aquatics. I wanted to know from a medical standpoint what the reaction would be to teaching infants and toddlers to swim. My brother was very hesitant and told me to emphasize the safety aspects of the program. This year when we started our program, I kept him up to date on what KCSA and IA are trying to accomplish. A recent youtube video featured an 18 month old swimming across a small pool. There have been 1.1 million viewers. Most of the people were commenting on the parents forcing their child to work out! The safety aspects were not discussed. Infant Aquatics is NOT about having little children work out. The #1 reason to teach a child to swim is to prevent an aquatic accident such as drowning or severe aquatic injury. These accidents are totally preventable.

This summer in KC we have had six drownings: four adults, one 16 year old and one two year old. This is a terrible tragedy that never should happen. At the KCSA we emphasize to your children the importance of water safety: not diving into unmarked lakes, ponds, pools. When in doubt, don’t do it! The importance of wearing a certified Coast Guard life jacket when riding in a boat or enjoying water sports like water skiing, boating, fishing. Making the wise decision when they are out with their family or friends. Never swim alone. I am writing this email to remind everyone to use good decisions when around water. Have a healthy respect for the water. Encourage everyone to learn to swim I want to thank Flip Short and Dan Lowe for helping KCSA to bring Infant Aquatics and rescue floating to the KC area. Our Lee’s Summit facility is perfect for teaching any level of person to learn to swim.

Experience the pleasure and excitement of traveling through mid-19th century France. From Paris to the countryside, the top of Mont Blanc to the Mediterranean, this exhibition features approximately 125 key paintings and photographs by well-known Impressionists such as Claude Monet, Camille Pissarro and Pierre-Auguste Renoir, as well as important photographs by Gustave Le Gray and Édouard Baldus. Impressionist France explores connections between landscape and national identity during a period in which France was being fundamentally transformed and modernized. Painters and photographers composed competing visions of France as modern and industrialized or, in equally potent terms, as rural and anti-modern. Within this historical context key artists emerged and drew inspiration, including Monet, Pissarro and others from the Impressionist generation. It is also during this period that influential photographers, such as Le Gray, Baldus, and the Bisson frères profoundly advanced the practice of photography from amateur experimentation to artistic mastery, while also demonstrating its value as a vital documentary tool for state-sponsored agendas. This exhibition will showcase works never before seen in the region, and include important paintings and photographs from 36 major American and European museums and several private collections. The Nelson-Atkins is located at 45th and Oak Streets, Kansas City, MO. To autumnize my space I look for natural materials such as stones, woods and furs that take you back to nature. They give that cozy and homey aesthetic that screams fall. Also on the list? Gold baby. Solid gold. Add a splash of brass to table setting or shelf and you have instant autumn glam. Do not forget the warm palette of orange, oxblood, ambers and teals. And voila! You have an enviable fall space. Get it.
