NE News which includes some from our meeting with the Gran Alacant Councillor Loreto Cascales

Main news this month is that the local police are joining our magazine, with a monthly column. We have asked them to pass on any information they would like us all to be made aware of, and hopefully even tell us of various people they may have caught, causing agro among us. We look forward to seeing how this column developes. Any patanque players out there? If so, good news for you. Three new patanque areas are to be provided at the Gran Alacant Sports Centre.

The new childrens play area in front of the Municipal Offices have been replaced with new equipment as the old ones were getting dangerous. The area eventually is to be expanded to give more play area. When the budget for GA has been ageed, the council will decide where and what size to build us various park areas. Within these parks will be

more play areas included for the children. The idea of affordable houses that have been built in Santa Pola will not be coming to Gran Alacant. Various rumours about these type of properties being built on GA, are not true, at this point in time!. The new steet lights we mentioned in a previous issue are sighted at the bottom of the beach road coming down from The Winery, on the right, just before the the turning onto the coast road. Santa Pola can only put lighting that far due to the fact that Elche Council are responsible for the roads after the turning.

On page 60 in the magazine we mention the new activities planned at the GA library, which are to include some bus trips.

Big money is being spent along the edge of El Clot, near the Carabasi Bars. There has always been a sewage problem there and a new pump and pipeline is being installed to push all of the nasties all the way along to the Santa Pola sewage plant.

During the month we met at the Town Hall with Lola the Councillor for Urbanisation, concerning various plots of land that some people were worried about. Next month (as space does not allow this month) we will again publish the land map of Gran Alacant and highlight the areas of concern. This month we will mark the areas on our map at the back of the magazine. Area A - yes, unfortunately, is to be more commercial units. We did express our concern that there seems to be too many commercials already on the urbanisation, and again, yes, these could be more bars, restaurants, but would need the ok from the Town Hall. Area B - the area in front of Dunbars, will not be for houses, but is reserved for any future Town Hall needs, ie medical centre etc etc. Area C - is not being reserved for houses. This is yet another area, reserved for the needs of the Town Hall.

Leaflets will be placed around GA about the serious shortage of water. We have lived here for 5 years and

water has never been such a problem as now. Also it is advisable not to drink tap water at the moment.

Other news to pass on is an example of the need AGAIN to sign on the padron. The only way the government will provide Santa Pola which includes Gran Alacant with a full transport service is if 50,000 people are signed on the local padron. At the moment there are 35,000, so please do sign on the padron, it costs nothing, just go to the Municipal Office. ....and news from Santa Pola

You may have noticed the massive reconstruction work in Santa Pola, where all of the pipework is being replaced, causing mayhem, but eventually to benefit us all. One of the main roundabouts, between McDonalds and the tourist office is to be made wider, to include an extra lane to help the flow of the traffic. When completed the area will be made to look very nice with another fountain. The exit from this roundabout in the direction of the school, is to be made one way, with new pavements and lined with more trees. A new fountain is also to be built on the roundabout nearer the sea in front of Mas y Mas supermarket.

This month we welcome the Local Police to our magazine in what we hope will be a monthly column.

This column we feel, can help the police and ourselves within the community, to liase together for the benefit of us all.

Hopefully the police can relay to us, matters of concern to them, and likewise we can do the same. We do have a 24 hour police presence on Gran Alacant, but of course they cannot always be in the right place at the right time. IF YOU NEED THEM dial 112 where there is always a translator on hand. This number will then direct the Local Police to the problem. Perhaps it would always be a good idea, to have in your mobile phone, the numbers of translators available from our magazine adverts, who could then help you to speak with the police.This month the Police would like to pass on, security advise to help lower the amount of cars being stolen. SECURITY FOR YOU CAR If you park your car, try to do it in a place that is watched or at least on avenues or streets that are illuminated and with people walking around. If you decide to leave it in the street, just watch out for anyone looking suspicious.

During night times drive through streets with alot of people about or well lit roads. When you drive through towns keep your doors locked. When you get out of your car, never leave the engine running.

If your car gets shunted from the rear make sure you switch off the engine and take out the key, so that when you get out to speak to the other driver, no-one could jump in your car and drive off.

Before leaving your car, be sure you lock your steering wheel and be sure also that you have closed all the windows and doors. Hide the audiocassette and do not forget to hide anything that anybody can see from the outside of the car in the boot.

In-growing toe nails are very painful, they can

cause the toe to become very red and swollen and painful to touch. In some cases a discharge of pus or watery blood can occur. It is usually the large toe which is affected, and is caused by a splinter of nail or the whole nail causing pressure into the skin. The main causes for an in-growing toe nail are :- Trauma to the nail, improper cutting of the toe nails, tight shoes, abnormal shape of the nail plate, abnormal thickness of the nail. By cutting the nail straight across and leaving it slightly longer, this will help in avoiding an in-growing toe nail. If the symptoms are really bad a Chiropodist or podiatrist will give you advice on treatment, as sometimes surgery is needed . Fungus at an early stage will appear on the nail in patches of yellow or white discoloration, at the later stage the nail will grow thick, deformed, discoloured and have a foul odour (musty smell ). It may also split and start to crumble. It is caused by a microscopic organism called DERMATOPHYTES, it grows in the nail bed, beneath the nail and lives off the Keratin (protein in the nail ). You will usually find the condition starts at the far end of the nail, and if left untreated will attack the nail root (matrix). Again usually found in the big toe, but can spread to the others. In Spain we are more susceptible to fungal infections, as they thrive on warm moist conditions, sweaty shoes and moist socks. Also a common association is Athletes foot, which is also a fungal infection, which usually appears between the toes and down the sides of the feet. It can become itchy and burning, and can spread to other parts of the body. You can catch this infection in bathrooms, showers, swimming pools and changing rooms. These conditions can usually be treated by lotions from the pharmacia, or the podiatrist

The Carabasi Bars Complex down the hill by the Nature Reserve

The bars have got together this year and are paying for an administrator to look after the bars area. There will, as last year, be a security guard on duty in the summer months and a person is being employed part time to keep the area clean & tidy, keep up with the paintwork and carry out general maintenance work. The Gran Alacant train might be

arriving soon? First pictures of the train that may be doing the rounds on GA. We were at the test run, where local dignitaries were aboard to help the local council decide whether to give the ok to this new private venture. The plan is for the train to have stop offs all around Gran Alacant. This would give a great deal more opportunity for all of us on GA to visit different areas, particuarly if we would like a drink, without driving. If the go ahead is given, there will be a timetable issued. We at the magazine will offer to include the route on our map of Gran Alacant.

The house is an aurora plus on Monte-y-Mar (606). It has 2 bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a balcony, large basement and sun terrace. It is fully furnished and equipped, I have had security grilles fitted, and our communal pool is just down the bank and opened in summer 2007. We have sea views from our sun terrace. The garden at the front is fully tiled. There are three similar houses on the market in the area for around the 200,000 euros mark. I will exchange ours for a property in the UK worth £120,000 so at todayʼs average rate of 1.24 this gives a price for the house in Spain of 150,000 Euro which is exactly how much I paid for it when reserved in June 2004. Wireless Internet Security

As mentioned elsewhere in the magazine, people have been spotted using a laptop computer in a car, probably surfing the Internet via an unsecured wireless network. So, what is the risk to you? Firstly, of course, you are paying for the Internet and they are using your connection for free. But there can be hidden dangers. They could be downloading or uploading malicious or illegal files, and sadly they can be traced back to the address of your wireless router, thus if the police investigate this activity, the buck will stop at you. They could of course be doing nothing more than looking at their email, but they can see all the other computers on the wireless network, and if you are unlucky, they can see into your computer. All computers on a network need a workgroup name, and by default all Microsoft computers are given the workgroup name MSHome. To alter this, right-click My Computer, select properties, select the computer name tab and click on change. Now give your computer a new network name. Most importantly though, ensure your network connection is secured. To check this, right-click the single monitor icon down by the clock and select view wireless connections. A secured connection shows a padlock next to the name of the connection. There are various ways to secure a connection. You can encrypt any data passing on the network, and a network key is required to allow access to the system. By requiring a network key, you will prevent people from sitting outside and entering you system and using your connection for free. It is also possible to allow only certain computers to access the system, and this gives you another level of security. Never enter sensitive financial details on an unsecured network, because packet capture devices can listen to any transmissions and steal your sensitive data. The wireless connection at the library is unsecured and should not be used to send sensitive information from your laptop. Turn off the wireless adapter, both on the router and on your computer, if you are not using them. If your laptop has a wireless adapter, but you are not using it, switch it off. This prevents a forced connection into your computer, and extends the battery usage. Ensure a software firewall is activated. Windows XP and Vista both have one built in, and to check it is active, go to control panel and select the security center. Here you should ensure that the firewall is switched on. Keep your operating system up to date. Most patches issued by Microsoft patch holes that have been found in the security of your system, and by keeping your system up to date, you are stopping the bad guys entering via known holes. Wireless Internet security is possible with just a few simple checks of the system, and remember that a cable connection to your router is much quicker, and more secure. Gran Alacant Darts League Finals, sponsored by Thansa. The two finals on the night, saw Steve in the blue shirt beat John in the orange shirt 4-1 over the five legs. The Ladies final was won by Jan who beat Debbie by 2 legs to 1 Prizes were then given out to all of the various catergories which we show in the pictures. This is the third season of the darts league which has seen a continual growth in players and teams. The councilman of Gran Alacant Loreto Cascales, has announced the activities that will take place in the Library of Gran Alacant during the month of May. The plans are to help people of all ages and nationalities to participate in and, so to make it possible for everyone who wants to, to get together and socialise. There will be classes for memory andhealthful minds: to think about positives, handicrafts, and chess. In addition , courses in Spanish, basic and intermediate levels, local taxation, and presentations into associations,one of which will be Sclerosis, plus the internet. In addition, to all of these activities and more specifically for all the young people, a series of alternative activities have been designed for them, for example, there are construction factories, design of games and trips and excursions. The first of these were held on 11th April with ice skating and 13th April those interested could go for the day to the mountain range of the Cid (Petrer) In order to develop each of these initiatives the councilman of Great Alacant has counted on the support and collaboration of the councilmen of Youth, Daniel Cheek, and of Culture, Feli Dancer.

As the summer approaches, for those of you who do not know, there is a small summer season town near the Carabasi beach that opens it's doors after a long winter hibernation. The town is called Los Arenales, and with sea views from almost every appartment, it's location makes it a perfect seaside town. Just across the road from 'Fawlty Towers' ( a hotel that never was) set back from the road with a kind of courtyard front is a little hub of bars to suit every taste. The bar I have chosen for this week's review is called The Meeting Point. Carlos, one of the new owners was keen to give me some information about his new venture and tells me that it was originally the first bar to open in Los Arenales, and Whispers in Gran Alacant tell me that it is the new fashionable bar for the 'in crowd'. Oh to be beautiful and popular (either would suit me). It is still early in the year, but for the summer months expect DJs and possibly Karaoke most nights from 4pm - 5am! The area is predominately Spanish, so make it a late one if you like the buzz of a crowd. Please try not to let the English reputation down by getting too drunk early on and clearing the place singing badly! The lady stopped 2 policemen on GA and told them of her concerns. The police very discreetly pulled up by the car and questioned the boys, who were tapping into her neighbours internet and gaining access on their laptops. Once they had all departed, the police then made a return visit to the lady and explained the situation.

MY PET IS DEFINITIVELY OVERWEIGHT WHAT CAN I DO? Now that we know our dog is overweight and the Vet said there is no disease causing it, the most probable cause of the problem will be, undoubtedly, we are feeding the pet in the wrong way (excessive quantity of food, or maybe a too rich in calories one, even if the quantities are small). Another cause maybe, of course, that the pet is not taking enough exercise: the owner has not got enough time, the dog is too lazy or doesnʼt behave well outdoors (pulls too much, tries to escape or to attack other dogs or people), or maybe there is not a proper place available to let the dog run and play free. If this is the case, the dog will not be able to burn off all the calories we are providing him, even if they are not excessive. The problem is that every calorie not used will get deposited as fatty tissue, and then obesity and overweight will appear. According to our experience, the problem normally begins with an improper diet. In order to understand this, we are going to try to explain the main elementary behavioural patterns of the dog. Dogs, just like human beings are a social species: they like and enjoy being in the company of other individuals to live, work, play....and also to eat, but the problem is: behavioural rules are different in the two species, and sometimes we can commit

mistakes if we try to compare their rules with our rules. For example, one of the most common mistakes is to consider the food as a present: we normally join our relatives or friends to have lunch or dinner, and we have some extras when we have a celebration: parties, birthdays etc.This is not the same in the case of dogs; they eat together because they are social, not for celebrating anything. Besides, they always eat more or less the same (as they would if they were wild animals). Giving our dog a special meal because itʼs Sunday or because he spent the full day alone at home will deceive him, and he will never know what he is expected to do, because those "presents" wonʼt be associated to a previous effort, that means, he wonʼt feel them as a reward for obeying or doing the right thing. Food must not be used as a bribe for making the dog do or stop something: that would be the typical case of the dog which sits or lies down only when shown a treat.If we are going to use the food as a part of the normal educational process, weʼd better ask the Vet to teach us how to do it, without making our dog put weight on or turn him into a capricious one. Anyway, if we are going to use food as a reward for the dog, we have to take into account: -Treats are a prize, not a bribe. -If the task is easy the treat has to be less tasty than the one we would give if the effort has been bigger. -When the dog has learned a new trick we have to stop giving the treat every time he does it, but every two or three times in order to keep the attention of the dog alert. On that day they celebrate a Moors and Christians parade, later everybody goes to Lady Gracia’s Sanctuary, then all of a sudden, when the image comes out of the Sanctuary, music, fireworks and the lighting of hundreds of fires around the villages, have a look at the way the Lady of Gracia is taken down to the main church and to finish experience what happens inside the church. May be you follow my advise, you go and you do not like it, this is my favourite I really hope you like it. There are, of course, more parades, the programme is more or less as follows: Petrer 15th to 19th, Muro de Alcoy 10th to 13th , Salinas 25th to 29th,
