MAY 2024 ISSUE 232

Gran Alacant Advertiser continues to bring you all the local NEWS including information from the local Town Hall representative. Working for the local community since May 2005.

If you have any QUESTIONS or PROBLEMS you would like us to discuss, please email on info@granalacantadvertiser.com

ASK OUR GA COUNCILLORS

Hi Lou & Ged, We live on Calle Canarias and have a new bus stop at the top of the street to serve the Alicante to Santa Pola bus route. To facilitate this new bus stop, the Town Hall have moved the rubbish bins 50 meters down the street. They have also added a new line of bins directly across the road from our neighbours in full view from our house. The first thing you see and smell now are these bins, if they either moved these bins 100 meters either way they would not be directly in front of any houses.

Can you please ask our Councillors why we now have 4 lines of bins on Calle Canarias when 3 worked perfectly well before and why these bins are in full view of residents houses?

Additionally I feel there is now the need for some sort of traffic calming measures as this is a residential area and buses are passing at some speed. Kind regards, Christopher

Borja Merino

A: Oscar Valenzuela

The bins were positioned there, as there are many shops and restaurants close by. This was after a study undertaken by technicians from the town hall and repeated requests from GA residents to address the issue of refuse collection in the area. However, I understand that nobody wants bins so close to their house and I will consult the issue with councillor of cleaning to see if there is a better solution.

Q: Questions for Gran Alacant Politicians

I have a couple of questions for our politicians. First, I would like to say thank you very much for installing blue bollards in some corners, which now blocks visibility.

I think it is time to do some pilot test and place traffic lights for pedestrians in trouble spots where visibility is low or speed of cars is high. An example is Mediterranean Avenue the road to the Commercial Centre where you can see the fence has suffered some big impact already. Another example is also Mediterranean Avenue the crossing going to the Post Office where there is a lack of visibility and high speed of vehicles on this road.

Is it possible to limit the parking spaces on Mediterranean Avenue so that lanes are wider as the buses occupy a lot of space?

Finally is it possible the garbage trucks do their collections early in the morning to

Q: Bins on Calle Canarias

avoid peak hours and holding up traffic. Thank you for your attention, David

A: Borja Merino

We are going to analyse all the questions raised with the appropriate departments to see if they are feasible.

Q: Medical Centre

Hi Oscar, My husband and I agree with what Linda said in the last issue of the GA Advertiser regarding the decline in service at the Medical Centre.

We never had a problem with the language barrier with Doctors or Receptionists before so why has this problem suddenly appeared in clinics and in hospitals? I believe it has been since Britain came out of the EU.

We pay into the system and should expect a certain level of service. Not all of us can afford to pay translators 30-40e for every Doctor/Hospital visit!

A: Borja Merino

The language issue is currently being addressed at the Health Centre with the Council.

Q: Special Uplifts

Every year around this time, I start to see an increase in large items of furniture being discarded by the bins. Are people having a big spring clear out? Can you advise us what is supposed to happen with the special uplifts? Paddy

LARGE ITEMS COLLECTIONS

Tuesdays and Thursdays ONLY.

Please Whatsapp only this number any day of the week to let them know the name of the street you are leaving your large items on.

This would help to make the service more efficient and keep our Gran Alacant nice and tidy.

A: GA Advertiser

Special large item collection requests should be sent by WhatsApp to Urbaser. We print it in almost every issue of the magazine (see top of page) - the number is 686 801 323. We reported in our April issue that there has been a huge order of bins for the GA area. The implementation schedule is already in progress and we will see more new bins in May and June.

Q: Dog Poo

I have just spent 6 weeks in my holiday home in Gran Alacant, which overlooks the land between the medical centre and Gran Vista.

This area is very popular with dog walkers! We see them every day and would say 75% of them do NOT pick up their mess.

We have also witnessed men going behind bushes to urinate. Do they not realise children play in this area and it is a health hazard?

Can dog owners please become responsible and pick up? Wilfred

A: GA Advertiser

We have asked Clinica Veterinaria to write an article highlighting the importance of being responsible dog owners and health implications associated with “not picking up”.

Q: Tourist Train

Since the Gran Alacant train is unlikely to be running anytime soon, could somebody look into the possibility that Vectalia extend their bus service over the summer given that the tourist season is fast approaching?

Thanks, Jim & Kath

A: Oscar Valenzuela

We are working on restarting the tourists train before summer. The contract with the previous company ended and the new contract is now out for tender process. The closing date for applications is 2nd of May.

YOUR LATEST LOCAL GRAN ALACANT NEWS

DUMPING OF WASTE

The Council is appealing to the public to avoid dumping waste and household items on public roads or they could risk fines of up to 1,500 euros.

Santa Pola Council are in the process of renewing the entire fleet of collection

containers thanks to the new cleaning contract. None of these efforts will completely end the problem if we do not have the co-operation of our residents.

It is still difficult to combat the uncivil attitude of some people who do not respect the minimum rules of social responsibility. Constantly finding waste or household items dumped outside the containers, in open areas, in any corner of the public road and even in protected areas has become a frustrating reality.

Councillor for Cleanliness, Encarni Ramirez, said, "my greatest dream would be to have a clean and exemplary town for all who live in it, as well as for those who visit us. I understand that there are people who are conscious of keeping their environment clean".

Ramirez regrets that there is a minority of neighbours who "care nothing about the welfare, cleanliness or anything that affects their fellow citizens. They are selfish beings who only think about their rights and freedoms, without thinking about the rights and freedoms of those who live with them".

The Councillor for Cleaning, Encarni Ramirez would like to remind residents that there is a free service for the collection of household items.

WHATSAPP 686 801 323 TO ARRANGE A SPECIAL UPLIFT

When you contact Urbaser, they will give you a day and approximate time when they can collect. It is an effective, fast and free service that takes very little effort and prevents waste from being abandoned in the street, disturbing the rest of the neighbours and giving a feeling of neglect that no one wants.

Awareness is important, but not always effective on its own. If caught, the Local Police can issue fines of up to 1,500 euros for dumping on public roads.

Encarni Ramírez said, "A town can never be clean without the joint involvement of politicians and residents. My involvement is absolute. Can I count on all of you?"

BURNING PERMITS SUSPENDED UNTIL OCTOBER

The Generalitat Valenciana is suspending burning permits until October 15 due to the increased risk conditions arising from lack of rainfall in the Valencian Community.

The suspension means that all burning authorisations on forest areas will not be permitted.

Given the special forest fire risk conditions that are affecting the Valencian Community, it has been considered necessary to respond appropriately to minimize the number of fires.

INVESTMENT IN NEW MACHINERY FOR BEACH CLEANING

Urbaser, the cleaning company in Santa Pola, showed Mayor Loreto Serrano the new vehicles that will be part of the beach cleaning service, part of the commitment to modernize and improve the machinery to make our beaches look impeccable. This includes the introduction of 17 new vehicles, 7 of them electric, in the coming weeks to help improve the area.

The mayor expressed her satisfaction because “the machines included in the new specifications of the cleaning contract are finally beginning to arrive, making it a reality. Serrano added, “I am very satisfied because we are finally beginning to make the change noticeable after so many problems that we have had to solve to get here. We will soon have more news about the rest of the innovations to modernize the cleaning of our area."

Urbaser representative Alberto Bleda, explained, “It is an important day for Urbaser. We present 17 new vehicles for the new Santa Pola beach cleaning service, which includes a greater number of more eco-friendly vehicles.”

Although some of the machine has yet to be received, most of the equipment is already in full use, including 3 tractors for beach cleaning. Two manual beach cleaning machines will optimize sand cleaning in hard-to-reach spaces where the tractor with the beach cleaning machine cannot reach.

Two 4×4 quad type vehicles are also incorporated for cleaning and clearing breakwaters and coves. One of them has a built-in high-pressure cleaner to disinfect footbaths, walkways and remove graffiti.

And finally, 3 4×4 electric vehicles are added for collecting trash cans and manual cleaning, as well as 3 5-seater electric vans for cleaning and clearing beaches.

All this equipment is already active working daily to clean the beaches of Gran Alacant and Santa Pola. All vehicles are labelled with the new corporate image of the beach cleaning service, which shows two iconic points of Santa Pola such as the lighthouse and the lighthouse viewpoint. In the same way, it includes three colours that represent the municipality: the blue of its sea, the green of its nature and yellow for its light and heat.

As Loreto Serrano explained, “from here I ask you all for your collaboration to avoid leaving waste or belongings on our beaches, because all our efforts will not be enough without your help.”

MARKETS ARE DYING

The City Council of Santa Pola called for the withdrawal of an advertising campaign with the photo of a rotten orange

Joaquín Lozano, Councillor of Markets expressed regret that this campaign funded by the Central Government caused damage to the image of traders and the agricultural sector by using photos of rotten fruit.

The NGO Justicia Alimentaria, which is responsible for the campaign, is financially supported by the Ministry of Social Rights, Consumption and Agenda 2030 as well as the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, European Union and Cooperation.

rotten fruit, which is far from the reality of the freshness of products that are sold every day in these establishments."

The building of the new school is progressing well at the new site next to Monte Faro Urbanisation.

Hi Lou, we really could do with more charity shops here. People miss the Easy Horse shop and since it closed people have no where to give furniture to. As you see a lot is put by the bins!

Book of the month by Beth

A thought–provoking book My Recommended Book of the Month

The Narrow Road

To the Deep North

Forever after, there were for them only two sorts of men: the men who were on the line, and the rest of humanity, who were not.

In the despair of a Japanese POW camp on the Burma Death Railway, surgeon Dorrigo Evans is haunted by his love affair with his uncle’s young wife two years earlier. Struggling to save the men under his command from starvation, from cholera, from beatings, he receives a letter that will change his life forever.

This book follows the life of Dorrigo before during and after the war. It is a story about the many forms of love and death and of war and truth. The chapters jump from one time to another and back again which took a while to get used to.

It shows the psyche of man - the survivors on both sides who got on with their lives and how what happened affected them and their families.

ABOUT GA INSURANCES

GA INSURANCES provide a friendly, professional and reliable service to suit all your insurance needs. Located in Santara Resort in Gran Alacant, they offer competitive free quotes to clients throughout the entire Spanish Costa, inland and islands.

BACKGROUND OF GA INSURANCES

Alfonso Castro started in the insurance world as a free agent in 1987 when he was only 20 years old. Alfonso reminisces, “The Gran Vista and Sierra Mar Urbanizations were being built next to the already existing Panorama and Gran Alacant buildings. This meant the arrival of many international buyers, mostly Scandinavian and German at that time. There was high demand for an insurance service and at that time, speaking languages was not very common, so I helped international clients and specialised working in this area.

I have fond memories of those days sitting on clients’ terraces. Many of our clients have become our friends over the years.

I also worked for Sun Alliance and Asssa Health for a number of years and in 2016 we opened the office in Gran Alacant that my son Marvin and I are delighted to run today.”

WHAT DO YOU SPECIALISE IN “Everything from home, car, health, life, loan insurance to business insurance.”

WHAT DID YOU DO BEFORE

“I was born and raised in the southwest of Germany, near the border with France and Switzerland. My Galician father and Valencian mother were very young when they emigrated to this country after getting a job. They had been contracted by a German factory which meant a work contract and accommodation in this country.

I finished my studies in Germany at 18, after my high school degree, and decided to come to Alicante where we used to spend our summer holidays as a family.

A l f o n s o C a s t r o

GRAN ALACANT INSURANCES

My first jobs here were in the shoe industry in Elche and also teaching German at a language academy to shoe factory owners and their employees.”

BEST THING ABOUT YOUR JOB

“Our clients. We are fortunate to meet many great people, which adds to the pleasure of our job and to our motivation to do a great job.

Meeting and getting to know people, learning about their different cultures and hearing their stories is a gift.

Working alongside my son Marvin and training him up in the business has also been a great pleasure for me. I am very proud of the man he has become.“

CHALLENGING PART OF YOUR JOB

“It is unfortunate when a claim is not covered by insurance. Thankfully, this is in the minority of cases we deal with but it remains to be the saddest part of the job.”

THE MAJORITY OF CLAIMS

“The majority of the claims we deal with involve broken underground pipes in homes. This problem usually comes with a loss of water consumption and an excess water bill. In some cases, we have seen water bills reaching five figures after a prolonged absence of the owner.

We therefore advise owners, especially second homeowners, to close the shut-off taps both inside and outside their property and check whether their home insurance includes these damages.

To a lesser extent, we have records of thefts. We have the occasional car accident claim; however, I am glad to say we have

a clientele of magnificent and prudent drivers. Interestingly, after 30 years, we have not recorded any case of illegal occupation in all the areas we operate.”

STRANGEST THING CLAIMED FOR

“We had a case where a man tried to claim for his false teeth which he had left in a glass on a shelf. Above the shelf was a tin of paint, which fell on his teeth, rendering them useless! Unfortunately, insurance does not pay for this type of claim here in Spain.”

HOBBIES/SPARE TIME

“I enjoy spending quality time with my family and travelling. I also love playing basketball and play guitar and bass with a group of friends.”

THE FUTURE OF GA INSURANCES

“Honesty and trust respect form a big part of what we do. We will continue to act ethically and professionally and treat people respectfully the way we would expect to be treated. Our aim is to continue providing excellent service for many years to come.”

If you spend more than 183 days in Spain throughout the year, including occasional trips away, you're considered a fiscal resident.

Louise and Phillipe made what is normally a nightmare into a very easy experience. We asked them to take care of everything from selling the house to closing bank accounts no hassle did what it said on the tin. Brilliant job! www .ga-homefinders. com

You're also considered a fiscal resident if your main family or most of your activities and economic interests are based in Spain, either directly or indirectly.

Another indicator of fiscal residency is when your spouse or partner (if not legally separated) and your dependent children regularly live in Spain. Who is a fiscal resident

Throughout the entire calendar year, you're classified as either a resident or nonresident, and any change in residency status during the year won't affect your tax status for that period.

Stay tuned for next month's update on how the Spanish Tax Office is involved when a non-resident sells property!

WALK & TALK

SPRING 2024

This spring we have walked and talked in and around Gran Alacant, Clot de Galvany and to Santa Pola. We have discovered new routes and hikes, and seen hidden gems like the stone figures. And got to know new people and got up to date with old acquaintances. Thank you to everybody who has volunteered to lead the walks!

TRIP TO RICOTE VALLEY

The trip started in Albaran. There we had wonderful views over the river Segura and the valley from the El mirador de la Ermita Abaran.

The big Noria in Albaran - The Norias lift the water up into water-aqueducts. This is the biggest one that's still in operation in europe. Then we took the bus to Ricote to see the 1000 year old olive-tree.

85 YEARS ON: REMEMBERING THE STANBROOK

Gran Alacant’s privileged location high on the cliffs just south of Alicante city affords magnificent views over the city and its coastline. Looking out over the Mediterranean today one is able to watch a peaceful traffic of commercial shipping, ferries and pleasurecraft. Eighty five years ago in March 1939 the scene was quite different and was the setting for a famous act of heroic and daring courage by a Welsh sea captain and his crew.

Early 1939 saw the closing events of the Spanish civil war that had torn the country apart for three years. The coup d’etat launched by a group of army generals including Francisco Franco had achieved almost total military domination of Spain with scarcely any areas remaining under the control of the legitimate government. By the last days of March 1939 the only part of Spain not under the occupation and control of the rebel army forces was the port area of Alicante. The port was a scene of chaos and fear with thousands of Spaniards

attempting to flee the country; amongst these were many who had been involved in the political life of the country and had opposed the army’s coup d’etat. The British and French governments refused to organise an evacuation by sea leaving crowds of desperate people attempting to gain passage on any ship leaving the port. The city and harbour were under constant bombardment from the army and rebel air force supported by Italian and German aircraft based in the Balearic Islands.

Into this bloody chaos arrived a small British freighter called the SS Stanbrook to collect a cargo of oranges and saffron. Built in 1909 on the Tyne she was 70 metres in length and just under 1400 tons, a minnow compared to today’s vast commercial ships but to the desperate people on the quayside a potential lifeline to avoid capture and execution. Everything depended on the decision of the ship’s Welsh

captain Archibald Dickson. Captain Dickson was under instructions by the ship’s owners to collect the cargo and remain neutral, however seeing the desperate scenes in Alicante he abandoned the cargo and determined to take on board all those trying to flee. His little ship took on board around 2,500 people crammed into every inch of space and placing the ship at risk of capsize. Late on 28th March 1939 the SS Stanbrook left Alicante under fire from rebel warships and aircraft trying to force it to change course to Mallorca. The harassment of the ship continued until the Royal Navy finally decided to step in to protect the British flagged vessel and escort it away from Spanish waters.

22 hours later the Stanbrook arrived in the Algerian port of Oran. After negotiations with the French authorities the women and children were allowed to disembark. The 1,500 male passengers were left on board and were ultimately only allowed off of the ship a month later following a public outcry in France. The fate of many of these men was not immediately clear with most being kept in brutal internment camps and even being used as forced labour by the French colonial authorities; but they had at least kept their lives. For all of the Spaniards on board the SS Stanbrook the trip to Oran was only the first part of journeys that would scatter them to every corner of the world as exiles from the fascist dictatorship of Franco that would rule Spain for the next 36 years. Without the humanitarian decision of Captain Dickson many of those who escaped on the Stanbrook would

without doubt have faced execution or imprisonment by General Franco, who immediately instigated a policy of vengeance and fear upon all of those who had opposed his illegal seizure of power.

Europe’s other dictators soon brought wars of domination to the rest of Europe. In November 1939 the SS Stanbrook was itself an early victim when it was sunk in the North Sea by a German U boat, Captain Dickson went down with his ship.

Alicante has not forgotten Archibald Dickson and his brave decision to save the desperate crowds on the quayside in late March 1939. The city of Alicante has named a street after the ship and erected a monument to the rescue in the old port area that is now the marina. Captain Dickson’s descendants have also been welcomed to commemorative events in the city. As the Valencia government is currently attempting to effectively rewrite the history of that period of Spanish history, now more than ever it is especially important to tell the story of the SS Stanbrook, its captain and the people saved by him in March 1939.

Liliana Aldeguer Cerdán 793 English translation by Sergio Reina Esteban col 747

WHEN THE STREETS BECOME DOG TOILETS

Since the new Spanish Animal Protection Act hasn’t been passed yet, the long awaited article explaining it, and separating definitively truth from hoaxes, will have to wait a bit more. Meanwhile, I’m going to present a list of facts that shouldn’t be reminded if we really were what we are supposed to be: civilized adults. I’m talking of a fact which everyone has suffered several times: dog poo that hasn’t been picked up by negligent pet owners.

Some people may thing this is a minor problem, but the truth is dog poo may be a real health problem, for both pets and humans. I have tried to classify the problems from less to more important:

THE WAY THEY LOOK AND SMELL

Disgusting, isn’t it? Picking up your dog’s poo and carrying it in a plastic bag till you find the nearest dustbin is not nice, but making our common green areas turn into pig pens is far worse, and, besides, you’ll be fined if caught. In some places you can get caught even by DNA techniques, as we described in an article some years ago.

STEPPING IN DOG POO

A really embarrassing moment, despite we usually say in Spain this means you are to win the lottery.

INFECTIOUS AND PARASITIC DOG DISEASES

As anyone can imagine, every dog poo is a small ecosystem, where lots of microorganism, which can be good and bad ones live. When other dogs smell the poos coming from ill individuals, the odds of catching a disease are high.

INTESTINAL PROTOZOA AND ROUND AND FLAT INTESTINAL WORMS

Infested animals eliminate via faeces millions of eggs, which will colonize the digestive system of any dog which contact the poo. They will produce gastroenteritis (in case of certain worms such as Ancylostoma caninum, that bites the intestinal walls because they have teeth, the diarrhoea may be haemorrhagic).

VIRAL DISEASES

Despite the number of cases has come down these last years thanks to vaccines, we should never forget about diseases such as Parvovirus, digestive Coronavirus and canine distemper, whose mortality rates, specially in puppies, are very high. A haemorrhagic gastroenteritis will appear (and, in case of distemper, respiratory and neurological symptoms as well), and, since they are produced by viruses, antibiotics don’t help.

INFECTIOUS AND PARASITIC HUMAN DISEASES

We are talking about zoonosis, that is, diseases that can be transmitted from animals to humans (and vice versa!). This is a public health problem, and the prejudice in certain cases can be very important.

ROUND INTESTINAL WORMS

When somebody asks about deworming, I normally reply is much more important than vaccination, since the diseases you are preventing with vaccines (except

rabies!) rarely affect humans, but when living with an infested dog, their worms can easily go to your intestine, specially in case of children. So, apart from picking up your dog’s poo from the street, it’s very important to keep worming treatments up to date. The minimum acceptable is every 3 months, but the more the better. If you provide a monthly treatment, you are also covering heartworm (which is not transmitted via oral-faecal, but by vAectors such as mosquitoes).

VERY IMPORTANT: the fact that you have your dog’s worming treatments up to date, doesn’t exempt you from picking up your dog’s poo!

HYDATID CYSTS

I left this one for the end because it’s, by far, the biggest health problem dog poo may cause. We wrote about it at our first GA Advertiser article, but because that was about 15 years ago, I think it’s a good moment to present a small reminder.

The cause of this problem is a tapeworm called Echinococcus granulosus. This parasite has a 2 hosts life cycle, which means it spends the larval part of its life in some species of hosts, and the adult part of its life in other species. The first group of species are called intermediate hosts (in case of E. Granulosus they are ruminants and HUMANS), and the second group are called definitive hosts (in this case, DOGS). One very important thing is the transmission is ALWAYS from intermediate to definitive and vice versa, never from intermediate to intermediate or from definitive to definitive. What do we have so far? Well, now we know that larvae only live in ruminants and humans, and adult worms only live in dogs,

and the transmission will always be from ruminants or humans to dogs, or from dogs to ruminants and humans.

WHAT ARE THE TRANSMISSION MECHANISMS?

A dog catches the disease when eating contaminated ruminant viscera (this is why it’s so important to do frequent worming treatments in case of shepherd dogs which work with livestock), and ruminant and humans catch the disease when contacting contaminated dog poo. At first sight it doesn’t sound very alarming, isn’t it? Dogs carry adult tapeworms, and ruminants and us carry larvae. A minor problem. Well, it would be a minor problem if E. Granusosus was like many other parasites, but the terrible thing about it, is the adult phase (the one which live in dog’s intestine) is a microscopic tapeworm which doesn’t produce practically any damage, BUT the larval phase, the one which live in ruminants and humans, called hydatid cyst, is a real monster, even more terrifying than the alien foetus displayed at the sci-fi movie “alien”. A hydatid cyst is a sphere that can be over 40 cm diameter and weigh several kilograms, which may appear at liver, lungs, or even brain. The internal surface of this sphere will produce millions of future adults. As anyone can imagine, the only way of treating the cyst is surgical, and the risk of death, specially if the cyst is located at the brain, is very high.

So, let’s be clean and don’t leave dogs poo in the environment.

Gran Alacant’s ELCHE CF SUPPORTERS GROUP

A group of football fans in Gran Alacant have their own Elche CF supporters club to attend home games at the stadium and watch away games in local bars.

Home games see the group move around different bars in Gran Alacant as their meeting place, with the usual bars used being Happy’s at the GA Centre while Tommy’s is the regular spot up the hill.

From there, the group, primarily made up of 19 season ticket holders who sit together, arranges carsharing to get to the ground in time for some pre-match beers and food before returning to Gran Alacant afterwards.

Travel to the ground is problematic with no easy public transport links. With the group sharing driving duties, they have managed to shift larger groups of fans to games.

Tickets are always easy to come by this season with the club being in the second division. They can be purchased via the club website at www.elchecf.es and there is also the occasional spare ticket available through the group as well.

Jornadas in Spain have games all spread out with each match being televised. It is normal for the actual date and time of the match to not be announced until 2 to 5 weeks beforehand.

The home league games in May are against Huesca on the weekend of 12 May, and a local derby against Eldense in the last home league game of the season on the weekend of 26 May - dates and times to be confirmed for those games.

With Elche challenging at the top of the table, these games could help decide if the season will end in a successful return to La Liga and the big boys of Spanish football, or even help secure promotion play-off entry for June.

Find the group on Facebook at ‘Peña Elche CF de Gran Alacant’ ¡Mucho Elche!

Our March lunch was held at Ceilo Largo, which proved to be our biggest lunch yet with just under 50 ladies enjoying a fantastic Chinese lunch. Our hosts very kindly donated a free lunch, the raffle of which raised more than €100. This will be donated to Elche Children’s Care Home.

Our next lunch is already fully booked, with a waiting list. We aim to use local restaurants, and spread our events across Gran Alacant. If any restaurants would like to collaborate with us on an event, please get in touch.

Initially the group was set up as a social network, for ladies to find local friends and

Trigger

activities. Over the past few years since its inception it’s grown to a group of over 700 members, and activities range from monthly coffees and lunches, weekly walks, and charity fund raising events such as craft afternoons. Gals has representation from over 10 counties, with ages from 20 to 65+. We are all based or connected to Gran Alacant or its immediate surrounding areas.

The group forms part of a vital network of friendship and support new members are very welcome. Any ladies wanting to join can visit our Facebook page and answer simple questions.

If any local businesses would like to donate a prize to help us raise money for the Elche Children’s Care Home please get in touch.

This is TRIGGER a 7 year old large dog. He is so affectionate, good on a lead and very obedient. He would make a great companion and is house trained as he has come from a loving home. Trigger has a passport and is fully vaccinated.

Can anyone please give Trigger another safe and loving family home. Contact us at the Shelter if you would like to come and meet him!

ARENA the beautiful girl that was found near El Pinet beach recently has been in our care with a temporary foster family but will be coming up to the shelter if we can not find a forever home. Arena is around 2 years old and did not have the best start in life so can be a little scared when you first meet her, so needs someone with the patience and confidence to help her learn to trust. She is good with the other dogs in her foster home and at the local dog park, she just wants lots of cuddles and attention. She is vet checked, spayed, fully vaccinated and chipped with a passport.

If you would like any information or to meet her please contact us at the Shelter.

If you are interested in adoption or would like more info please contact us on:

There is a vibrant group of social cyclists in Gran Alacant who meet up outside of Molly Malones most days of the week at around 10:00am.

We ride hybrid and off road bikes, are of varying ages, fitness levels and both sexes and usually cycle the rural roads and paths around Gran Alacant, Santa Pola and Elche which means 12 – 25 miles per ride.

Helge (Pub A) x 1

Niño (Taberna B) x 1

Fitter, stronger cyclists can opt to take different routes but, we always meet up at a designated stop for a coffee, and importantly, a natter. Sometimes the group is just two cyclists, whilst other times it can be as many as 10-12 and as a testament to the group, in the years we have been meeting, many strong friendships have been formed.

As we don’t all live in Gran Alacant we communicate via a Whatsapp Group so it is best to check on the Whatsapp group who is around and who is going out on any particular day.

If you want to join us please contact us on Whatsapp 00353 / 87 991 6020

Hi, my name is Geoff and I have been asked by Lou to challenge you every month with a few teasers. I hope you enjoy them.

I first came to GA in 2001 and bought my house in 2002 where I have been a regular visitor ever since. You will see me at the quizzes, or out and about, running or cycling. If you see me come and say hi, or, just give me a cheery hello. I am also a big lover of live music and try to see as many live acts as I can.
