Child safety during the holidays The winter school holidays are around the corner and, compared to the summer break, it is a much bigger challenge to keep the kids entertained this time of year.

HAVE YOU SEEN HIM? The Stellenbosch SAPS is looking for this man who can assist them in the investigation of an attempted rape that took place on 7 May this year. According to police spokesperson Lt Natalie Martin, the victim was given a lift by her attacker after she returned from a local pub. The suspect then said that he had to stop at his office and invited her in as it was cold outside. He then attempted to rape her. Anyone with information regarding the incident can call WO Zimri at 082 463 7214 or 021 809 9168 / 5.

For parents who are unable to take time off work or leave their children in the care of someone they trust, any school holiday brings with it the added stress of constantly wondering if your child is safe. Rob Dale, Managing Director of ADT Security in the Western Cape has some general tips which parents can pass on to their kids. He says it is important that parents make sure youngsters know to keep all entry and exit doors locked and that no-one is to enter the home without their permission: “If you have a home security system installed teach them how to activate and de-ac-

tivate it and how and when to use other security devices like panic buttons. Make a list of important telephone numbers – including the 10111 number - and show them that it has been placed near the telephone for use in emergencies.” Dale says there are also basic rules you can teach your child to follow if they are leaving home to walk to a friend’s house for a visit. “If you usually drive your child to the home of a friend who lives in the same neighbourhood, rather walk the route with them before they have to do it on their own. Explain that it is better to walk a slightly longer route down familiar streets, where there is more activity, than taking short-cuts across fields or deserted areas. “On the day, let them call you when they leave home and once they have arrived at their destination. Advise your children that

Check tyres regularly INFORMATION NEEDED: The Stellenbosch SAPS are investigating a case of rape which occurred in the Jan Marais Nature Reserve on 23 December 2011. According to reports, a young woman was alone when she was approached by a man asking for money. She said that she did not have any and tried to run away. However, he caught up with her and raped her. The man (above) who is between 25 and 30 years old, about 1,65 m tall and has shaved eyebrows, can be of assistance in the investigation. Anyone with information can call the investigating officer Const LD February at 082 469 7214 or 021 809 9168 / 5.

RESEARCH has shown that damaged and badly maintained tyres are one of the main factors that contribute to accidents in South Africa. Tyres are the most critical safety component on a vehicle as it affects traction, handling, steering, stability and braking. “Drivers often forget that only correctly inflated tyres can do their job properly, delivering the right level of handling performance,” says Lize Hayward, Goodyear Group Public Relations Manager. “Drivers frequently make one of three classical mistakes: either they don’t check their tyre pressure before departure, or alternatively, they check the pressure when the tyre is warm, which results in incorrect readings, or they put it at a level that does not take into account the weight of the car - empty or fully loaded, it makes a difference.”

Properly inflated tyres are necessary to keep the vehicle’s handling performance at optimal levels, especially its cornering and braking abilities. “When a tyre is under-inflated, the car’s weight is concentrated on the outside part of the tyre tread, increasing pressure on the tyre’s side-walls (the tyres’ shoulders as we call them), rather than being spread out evenly across the width of the tyre.” Tyres may lose up to 0,2 bar air pressure in a three-month time period. Tyre pressure should be checked regularly at least once a month. Drivers should also make sure they don’t set off on tyres that are in a bad condition. “Check your tyres’ tread wear before you depart. Is it still of sufficient depth? Is the tread worn evenly? Also check the tyre’s sidewalls for any damages”, adds Hayward.

if they do happen to find themselves in an unfamiliar street, they should look out for a police or security officer to help them and never to accept advice or a ride from a stranger.” With shopping malls also far busier than usual during holidays, Dale says the risk of your child wandering away from you and becoming lost in the hustle and bustle is higher. In a bid to keep them safe he advises that – as a general safety precaution – you help your child memorise their name, surname, home address and a contact number for at least one parent: “Teach them that if they become separated from you they should immediately look for mall security and give them that information. If your child is readily able to give them these details, the time taken to track down a parent can be reduced dramatically.”

Man (21) killed A Kayamandi (21) man was killed last week after he was allegedly caught stealing. According to Lt Natalie Martin, the Stellenbosch police spokesperson, the man had broken into a home in Kayamandi and stole a DVD player. “As he was leaving, holding the DVD player, the homeowner returned. A fight ensued and the alleged thief took out a knife and attacked the homeowner. “They fought and the young man was stabbed in the chest. He died on the scene.” A 44-year-old man was arrested for murder.

Theft thwarted THE quick response by a passing armed security officer, lead to the arrest of a burglar. According to Lt Natalie Martin, the victim of an alleged burglary was asleep in her home in Simonsberg Street in the early hours of 19 June. “She was called by ADT who informed her that her alarm had gone off. She heard someone running outside her house. A CSS Tactical response vehicle, which was passing by, saw a man running from the house. They followed the suspect and found the victim’s handbag in his possession. A 27-year-old man was arrested for housebreaking and theft.”

Another garden for Rietenbosch Primary SOYISO MALITI CLOETESVILLE’S Rietenbosch Primary School is fast becoming a green sanctuary. They have been handed their second garden in as many months. This came courtesy of cellphone network giants MTN’s 21 Days Yellow Care initiative, which ran from 1 to 21 June. MTN operates in 21 African countries, hence the project’s title. MTN staff created a vegetable garden at Rietenbosch. Their spokesperson, Lache Woldon-Sa-

muels explained the project’s objectives. “This year’s theme is education for all. One of our beneficiaries is the Early Education Centre here in Cloetesville. We’re planting vegetables and the produce of the garden will feed the children of the centre.” The MTN foundation has also donated cooking equipment to the centre. The Cloetesville park also got a “make-over” from MTN staff. Last month, the Stellenbosch Municipality handed over a garden to Rietenbosch, which can be seen next to the main entrance.

IT has been ten years since the first Pretty Things for Little Things promotion urged customers, especially senior citizens, to use their creative talents to make something for needy children. Through the creative and generous contributions made by the public, this campaign has, since it inception, collected and distributed more than 80 000 clothes and toys to children across South Africa. Shoprite and Checkers, in conjunction with Age in Action, would like to thank everyone who participated in and contributed to this worthy initiative during the last decade, and challenge customers and senior citizens to keep on knitting, sewing, building and crafting so that the joy can be spread even further over the next ten years. The Pretty Things for Little Things project calls on entrants to make anything practical, durable and safe that a child can wear or play with. Articles can be made of any resources available and can be entered into four categories namely soft toys, blankets, clothing, and other articles made from materials such as wood, tin or wire. Stress strikes children too LIKE grown-ups, children also suffer from stress. Here are some valuable tips for parents to help their children deal with stress: ) Listen to your child: Sometimes the best thing parents can do is just to be there to listen. Children want to feel independent. They don’t always need or want advice. Just knowing that they have someone to talk to can be reassuring for them. Talking about their problems can give them a chance to hear them out loud, which can help them come up with the answer on their own. ) Offer encouragement to your children: Let your children know that you are always there for him / her. Offer encouragement and reassurance without being negative or judgmental. ) Be a role model: If you are noticeably anxious, depressed, or have a major melt-down during stressful times, then odds are that your children will have the same reactions when they are stressed. How you cope with stress can also harm your credibility in your child’s eyes. If they see you freaking out when you are

under stress, then they are not going to trust any suggestions or advice you give them about stress. ) Provide stability to your child: Stability at home can help alleviate some of the stress on children. Constant changes can add to the child’s stress level. Try to be consistent in discipline and your daily routines. ) Teach your child behaviour which can decrease stress: There are things that can be done to help alleviate stress. Children see, children do, therefore walk your talk by being a role model for your child. You should stay positive, exercise and eat healthy foods, limit your caffeine consumption, and not use drugs or alcohol. You should also have a good support group and positive friends as well as do fun activities when you are stressed like listening to music, reading a book, or going for a walk. If the stress continues or worsens you may need to take your child to see a professional. Stress can lead to drug and alcohol abuse, self injury, depression, or suicidal thoughts. If you see any signs of this behaviour, seek professional help for your child immediately.

ACCURATE SPELL CHECKERS: Three Pieter Langeveldt pupils are flying the Stellenbosch flag high at the 2012 Pick n Pay spell check competition. Zhandre Michaels (centre) grabbed first place in the regional finals recently, while Chandene Meyer (right) and Handre Muller snatched second and third place respectively. Here they are flanked by their English teachers Charmaine van Graan (left) and Cheryl Dreyer. They will now compete at the provincial level at the V&A Waterfront on 19 July. And if they continue with their accurate spelling there, they will advance to the national spell check competition, which will be held in Johannesburg. PHOTO: SOYISO MALITI
