Abuse cases on the rise NICOLE MCCAIN

O

n Good Friday, a Nomzamo man came home under the influence of alcohol. He had spent some of his wife’s money, and when she confronted him, they began to argue. The argument turned physical, and as his wife ran into the house, he took out a gun and fired it. The woman died, and he turned the gun on himself afterwards. Their seven-year-old child witnessed it all. The child, after seeing Social Services, is now living with family. A murder docket and inquest have been opened, and an investigation is under way. Cases such as this are a big problem in the Helderberg, says Hilda Lourens of NGO Ukhukanya, which provides support for victims of domestic violence. She says the organisation, which works with men, women and children, received 18 reports of domestic violence last month. It dealt with another 40 in January and February. “These are only those that are reported to us. If I had to guess, I’d say this is merely a tenth of what is reported in our area,” says Lourens. And it’s not just women and children – almost half the cases personnel dealt with over the last month involved the abuse of men. Constable Mbulelo Mafuna of the

Strand Social Crimes Unit estimates that over 40 protection orders were served in March. These aren’t issued in every case of domestic violence, so there could be more, he says. Fifty incidents of domestic violence were reported in Gordon’s Bay in March, according to the Gordon’s Bay police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Nico Beukes. He says nine of these were criminal cases. “There has been an increase this year,” says Beukes, who mentions another 30 incidents reported since January. “But it’s because people are becoming more aware and reporting the incidents.” Lourens says these are not the only areas with a high incidence of domestic violence, with Macassar and Lwandle in particular being problem areas. Constable Mthokosisi Gama, spokesperson for the Lwandle police, confirms the high rate of domestic violence, but declines to divulge the number of reports the station has received owing to a national lockdown on the publication of crime statistics more than once a year. The official statistics do not include a category for domestic violence; these cases are grouped under assault or murder. Lourens says abuse is not only physical – Ukhukanya often deals with cases of emotional abuse. Emotional abuse can trigger a response

of physical abuse, she adds. Gama clarifies that domestic abuse involves mistreatment or controlling behaviour by one partner towards another in a relationship, which could be between couples, ex-partners, family members or a house mate, among others. Reinette Evans, director of Rape Crisis Helderberg, says domestic abuse is often related to substance abuse. Lourens adds that abuse has become a cultural mind-set, and children are often affected by domestic violence. Children who grow up in an abusive home often perpetuate the cycle because they know nothing else. It is here that education and awareness come in. Evans says domestic abuse can be prevented with education, and “helping mothers to teach their sons to respect women and vice versa. Often the boys just copy what their father does.” She adds that women need to know their rights, and the fact that they can get an interdict against their husband or partner. Gama stresses that cases should be reported to the police, who can help obtain a protection order. However, “the protection order is only the start – it simply sets the boundaries in the relationship”, says Lourens. She adds that the biggest challenge in fighting domestic abuse is

Breadwinners: Morkel Cottage children were given something for hungry tummies when the Kingdom Light Church handed out bread during a community outreach day on Friday. The giving didn’t stop there – Duraline and volunteers painted a section of the Morkel Cottage crèche, while volunteers with PetPals helped treat about 70 dogs for ticks and fleas, and handed out pet food. people who drop charges, or apply for a protection order and take no further action. Gama says women often withdraw the charges because the perpetrator is a breadwinner, or with the excuse that the incident was a misunderstanding.

Volgens Taliep is geweld ’n groot probleem in Erijahville.

Hy was bewusteloos.

Three men were arrested for drug possession on Thursday, after police officers found over 60 dagga plants in a Gordon’s Bay house.

Weed killers strike Police reaped a double harvest of drugs and suspects in Gordon’s Bay and Lwandle last week. Three men were arrested for possession of dagga in Gordon’s Bay on Thursday, after officers received a tip-off that a house there was giving new meaning to the term “homegrown”. The officers found over 60 dagga plants growing in pots; they seized the plants, along with the gardening equipment used to cultivate them. Three suspects, between the ages of 20 and 52 years, appeared in the Strand Magistrate’s Court on Friday. In a separate incident, Lwandle police officers arrested a 42-year-old man early on Fri-

day morning – also in connection with possession of dagga. The bust happened when officers on patrol noticed that the Nissan bakkie carrying three people in front of them had no lights on. When they tried to pull the bakkie over, it sped off. The officers set off in pursuit, and the short-lived chase ended when the bakkie hit a stone and was forced to stop. Two men managed to escape on foot, but one was caught. When police searched the bakkie, they found four bags of dagga, weighting in at 120 kg and worth around R13 000. No date has yet been set for the suspect’s appearance in the Strand Magistrate’s Court.

Supporting the faith The Helderberg New Muslim Support Group will have its first meeting on Thursday at 19:30. If you are a new Muslim or interested in learning more about Islam – or even if you have been a convert for years – you’re welcome to join for an evening of learning, sharing, support and sisterhood. The creation of the support group follows a workshop – titled Crossing the Cultural Divide – held by the the Iqra Learning Centre last month. The three-hour workshop gave Muslim converts the chance to share in one another’s varied experiences and the complexity of settling into a new faith and culture without losing their own identities or family contact. The three panellists – Paula Popescu-Saloojee, Laura Pistorius and Ayesha Brinkhuis – said during the workshop that one of the greatest challenges facing converts to Islam is a lack of opportunities to ask questions, and to find correct information and support. The Helderberg New Muslim Support Group is scheduled to meet at the Iqra Community Centre in Hammond Street, Strand, at 19:30 on the first and third Thursday of every month. Please note that the support group is for women only. To find out more contact Laura Pistorius on 0 021 854 5959 or at 2 ll.pistorius@gmail.com, or Ayesha Brinkhuis on 071 898 9522.

THE Annual Boland College open day takes place at all Boland College campuses on Friday. On the day prospective students, along with their parents, will be able to learn about and apply for the multitude of educational programmes available at the various campuses. “If you’re having trouble deciding on a field of study, come and speak to the people in the know,” a spokesperson says. This year prospective students will be able to undergo a career testing and guidance session, and all the lecturers and academic staff will be available for consultation. After going through the career

guidance session, students-to-be can complete an application form for the June 2012 or January 2013 intake. Funding has also made it possible for Boland College to offer bursaries to deserving students who were unable to register in January 2012. If you have passed Grade 12, you need to attend the open day for the opportunity to apply for one of many post-matric qualification programmes starting in June. For more information, phone Boland College Strand on 0 021 853 7611, or get hold of the Stellenbosch campus on 0 021 887 3027. You can also visit the college site at www.bolandcollege.com.

Sculpting the future Boys from Lwandle’s Simanyene and Khanyolwethu high schools got a helping hand on the path to manhood during the Men in the Making project in Pinelands. The pupils’ visit was initiated by the Lwandle police, who joined hands with Tracker South Africa to mould young boys into future leaders. The programme targeted Grade 8 boys, encouraging them to be responsible in all spheres of life. There were tours of the SAPS

Dog Unit premises, the 10111 premises in Maitland, and the Airwing premises in Belhar, giving the youngsters a chance to learn about how the police work, and inform them of potential career paths. Men for Change, a police support group for men, also held talks on domestic violence, crime and drugs. The Men in the Making project is a Tracker South Africa initiative aimed at encouraging boys to be positive role models.

Cindy, a border collie, showed she couldn’t be outsmarted when she sniffed out drugs hidden in a tyre by one of the pupils.

A window into law enforcement The Cape Town Metro Police gave youngsters a show to remember – and a lesson never to forget – during their recent educational visit to Firgrove Primary. The awareness day included games (“good touch–bad touch”, for example, aimed to teach children about sexual abuse), and a riveting display by the K9 unit, during which sniffer dogs showed how they smell out drugs and concealed weapons, and helped capture a “criminal” on the run. The morning concluded with a programme by Wally, the 107 mascot, who entertained the younger pupils while teaching them the 107 emergency number.

Seen with the boys are Warrant Officer Alania Barnard and Sergeant Portia Jack (on the left). Kneeling on the right is Constable Mkululi Mawela.

Right: Cape Town Metro Police patrol dog Turbo, a German shepherd, demonstrates to the pupils of Firgrove Primary the correct way to nab a criminal.

Schooling: think ahead Helderberg Primary School will host an open day from 18:30 to 20:00 on Thursday for pupils interested in joining the school

next year for Grades R and 1. For bookings phone Christa Möller on 021 850 7543 or 021 855 1482.

Be a hero and brave the flames Ever dreamed of becoming a firefighter? Volunteer Wildfire Services is recruiting new members for the 2012–2013 season. The non-profit organisation assists Table Mountain National Parks in Cape Town and CapeNature in Stellenbosch with combating wild fires during the summer months. The volunteers only fight fires outside the city – on the urban and agricultural fringe, as well as in remote mountain areas. They do not fight structural fires. Anyone physically fit – as long as they’re 18 years or older – can apply. If you’re not fit enough, or fighting fires is not your thing, you might want to consider the vacancies for control room operators,

planning members and logistics members. Applications close at the end of this month, and training for the coming season will start in May. If you’re interested, check out one of the following information sessions. The first, for the Stellenbosch area, happens at 19:00 today (Tuesday) at the CapeNature Office in Jonkershoek Valley. Tomorrow, those in the Cape Town area can make their way to the Newlands Fire Base in Newlands Forest at 18:30, while people living in and around Paarl can go to the Scouts Hall at 193 Bonaparte Avenue, Klein Parys, at 19:00. Local rugby clubs leap into battle The 2012 club rugby season in the Western Province kicked off on Saturday, much to the delight of the players and fans who have been anxiously awaiting its start. Club rugby in Western Province is huge, with a total of 157 club matches played this past Saturday. Among the local clubs in action this past weekend were Helderberg, who played Goodwood in their first Super League B clash of the season and came away with a convincing 46–6 win and 5 points. Helderberg lost their Super League A status last year, and needed to get out of the blocks in a hurry to move back to Super League A status next year. Goodwood has moved up to Super League B from the Premier A, and will find the going tough. Other Super League B matches last weekend included: Bellville vs Hand & Hearts; Brackenfell vs Pniel/Villagers; Collegians vs Primrose; and NNK vs Kuils River. For results on these and all other WP club rugby matches go to wpclubrugby.co.za. One of the favourite teams in Premier League A is St Georges, who kicked off their season with a match against Paarl. They narrowly lost 35–31. Elsies River played Hamlets; Kraaifontein took on Langa; and Scottsdene battled Rangers. Sir Lowrians kicked off their Premier League B season with a crushing 66–13 win over Milnerton, scoring 10 tries and earning 5 points in the process. They should win this league comfortably this season and get promoted to the Premier league A in 2013. Strand United and Macassar are two other local clubs playing in this league. Strand United played Van der Stel and won 20–15, while Macassar played Silvertree and also won their game, with 22–16. Other matches in this league were: Stellenbosch Coronations vs Eerste River; and Lagunya vs Franschhoek. In Division 1, Strand played Northerns and beat them 27–13 ,while Raithby lost 9–3 to Mannenberg. All Saints beat Busy Bees 15–7 in their Division 2 clash, while Strand Pioneers beat

Masiphulelo 24–23 in their Division 3 match. Read DistrictMail for full reports and more photos of some of these matches. Herman Abrahams, the deputy CEO of the Western Province Rugby Football Union, says he’s pleased to report that the season’s registration process was conducted with speed, and a minimum of bumps and bruises; he thanks all the clubs that responded in time. “At the last WP Union meeting, four clubs were accepted as full members of the WP Club Rugby family,” he goes on to say. “They are Simondium, Pêrel United, Young Brothers and Imiqhayi. With these four clubs joining the WP Club Rugby family, our total number of clubs has increased to 90.” Two clubs, Simonsberg Region and the Sunday League, were also accepted as associated members of the WP Union. “In total, 10 rural teams form part of the Simonsberg Region, whilst the Sunday League consists of 22 teams. To all of these clubs – welcome to the family. “The WP Union will lend a hand to these clubs concerning aspects like coaching, referees and applications to the Lotto Board.” Abrahams adds that, with the petrol price being sky-high, travel expenses have become a huge factor for clubs – so it’s fantastic news that the WP Union, with the cooperation of Golden Arrow Bus Services and the National Lotteries Board, will help a huge number of clubs with their travel expenses. “All the clubs from Premier League A and B, as well as Divisions 1 to 4, will share in this project’s benefits,” he says. Abrahams goes on to say that last year a number of workshops were held to teach clubs how to maximise their use of social media. “As a tool to communicate with their members, supporters and the public, the social media are very important. I am sure there will be a lot of tweets and Facebook items going around this year. “Don’t forget to add the hashtag #wpclubrugby into your Saturday tweets so that we can all follow the full club rugby action stream as you tweet. “Club rugby followers are also invited to watch the programme on club rugby every Wednesday at 21:00 on Cape Town TV.”
