A Tale of Two Labs

sometimes it’s hard to tear myself away from the day-to-day grind. But one of my favorite parts of this job is getting out to talk to readers and manufacturers. I can’t tell you how useful and informative (not to mention fun) these visits can be. I come back reinvigorated and full of ideas for how NAILS can better serve the industry. And I love catching up with “old” industry pals and meeting new ones. As nail professionals, I hope you also take advantage of time “out of the office” to expand your professional life in a different way than you do when you’re in the salon every day. That could mean getting out to take a class, attend a trade show, or go to a networking event. It could also mean heading to another salon to treat yourself to services and see how it feels to be a client. I love it when I hear about nail techs who trade services with each other. Sometimes when I’m visiting a manufacturer’s facility or attending a product launch, I wish more nail techs could experience it with me. Two such occasions happened earlier this year and in a strange coincidence, both were centered around research labs. My first field trip was spending a day with OPI’s George Schaeffer and other beauty industry bigwigs touring the City of Hope headquarters in Duarte, Calif. Many of you probably know that the professional beauty industry and City of Hope have a solid 25 year history. Each year, a Spirit of Life Award is given to a member of our larger beauty community. This year, George is the honoree, and he is committed to raising $5 million to help find new treatments and a cure for diabetes. (He’s actually matching $2.5 million on behalf of the George W. Schaeffer Endowment for Innovation in Diabetes Research. Turn to page 133 to see how you can get involved.) As a leading research, treatment, and education center dedicated to the prevention, treatment, and cure of cancer, diabetes, and other life-threatening diseases, City of Hope is committed to turning scientific discoveries into new treatments available to patients faster. On our tour, we got to walk through working labs and hear from doctors working on treatments and cures for AIDS and diabetes. It was inspiring and hopeful. A week later, I found myself in another lab down in Vista, Calif. And while CND’s research and development lab might not be saving lives (well maybe they are and they just didn’t tell me), they are pushing boundaries and creating some pretty cool nail products. The state-of-the-art lab is home to a team of chemists who work tirelessly to develop new products for the nail industry to help make your job (and your clients’ nails) better. A small group of us spent the morning in the lab taking part in experiments and learning how products are developed and tested. (Did you know Shellac was in development for five years before it was introduced? That’s some rigorous testing.) We got to mix up different batches of gel polish base coats and then we did “soakability” tests to see how well they came apart in acetone. We watched as they tested the flexibility of gels. And we got to mix a new color of Shellac. In addition to feeling like Mr. Wizard, it was also just an interesting way to learn more about product chemistry. It’s not really feasible for any product manufacturer to open up their facilities for tours. But I sure do think it would be cool if someone would create some “in the lab” videos so you could all get a taste of what it’s like behind the scenes at one of your favorite brands. I guess for now, you’ll have to rely on me to pull back the curtain as much as I can.

MANICURIST TO THE RESCUE! I have been doing nails for 12 years, during which time I have become quite skilled at working with acrylic. Yesterday at my salon, I had a new and interesting challenge: A client’s husband brought in an automobile micro-chip key that was broken and he wanted me to repair it. A new key costs $75 with an additional $75 programming fee. I thought this new challenge would be

WHERE CAN I FIND?

Where is the best place to buy different sizes of rhinestones and different colors?

Megan Rex Editor’s Note: We asked Visalia, Calif.-based nail tech Maggie Franklin (who did the rhinestone-adorned nails for this month’s cover) where she buys her rhinestones. Here’s what she said: “Ejoyce (www.ejoyce.com and then click on Rhinestone Shop in the navigation bar) is a great source without needing a resale permit for a wholesale account.” You can also check with large nail distributors like Premier Nail Source (www. premiernailsource.com), Nailite (www.nailiteinc.com), and Beauty Millennium (www.bminails.com). Where can I buy UV Brisa bulbs in bulk pricing?

Laura Betancourt Editor’s Note: We e-mailed CND’s director of marketing Elyce deBrown, and she said, “We don’t sell replacement bulbs in bulk. The Brisa Lamp replacement bulbs are sold as a 3-pack for $53.75 (salon cost). CND UV Lamp replacement bulbs are sold as a 4-pack for $39.95 (salon cost).”

George Schaeffer (seated, third from right) joins City of Hope patients in creating artwork to support the dinner in his honor.

OPI’s Schaeffer Raising Millions for Diabetes Research City of Hope’s National Professional Salon Industry has named George Schaeffer, president and CEO of OPI Products and Aloxxi International, the recipient of the 2012 Spirit of Life Award. As the 2012 recipient of City of Hope’s highest honor, Schaeffer embodies the vision and commitment that defines the Spirit of Life. Schaeffer has always lived by the belief that “giving back is beautiful.” Now, with the City of Hope, which is dedicated to scientific research and the well-being of patients and their families, he has formed the George W. Schaeffer Endowment for Innovation in Diabetes Research to help find new treatments and, possibly one day, a cure for diabetes. “I have been blessed with success in my lifetime. But I consider my biggest achievement having the ability to give back to others in need,” says Schaeffer. “I have been a supporter of City of Hope and their humanitarian efforts for many years. And while I am extremely honored to receive this award, I am even more excited about the opportunity to raise money for a cause that is dear to my heart: diabetes research. Approximately 8% of Americans have diabetes, and many more are at risk for developing the disease. It is very likely that someone you know and care about has or will have diabetes.” Schaeffer’s personal goal is to raise and donate over $5 million to help City of Hope continue to advance their mission. He will personally match up to $2.5 million raised for the George W. Schaeffer Endowment for Innovation in Diabetes Research. “If there is one thing I’ve learned in my life, it is that every time I give, I get a feeling of satisfaction that I have made a difference,” he says. In addition to his commitment to match up to $2.5 million

Participant & Ranking 1

NAIL COMPETITORS

Taking part in a competition takes courage and determination. Just waiting for the results is nervewracking in itself, but in the end, competing is worthwhile — for many reasons. That’s why we encourage all nail technicians to compete. You may even see your name on our Top 25 list. Each month, winners from participating shows are added to NAILS’ Top 25 ranking. First place earns 6 points, second earns 5 points, and third earns 4 points. For SuperPoints competitions, point scores are doubled (for veteran or master divisions) and fourth place earns 6 points. If you have questions regarding your points, call (310) 533-2457 or e-mail judy.lessin@bobit. com. All placements must be verified by show sponsors.

NEW SCORING FOR SUPERPOINTS COMPETITORS So that the ranking more accurately reflects competitors’ skill levels, winners in the novice or student division will not receive double points for their wins at SuperPoints events. Also note that no points will be awarded to participants in relay or group competitions in regular or SuperPoints events. *Note that categories must have at least three contestants to be counted in the ranking.

Bio Sculpture Gel Founder Receives Entrepreneur Award

Elmien Scholtz, founder of Bio Sculpture Gel, displays her Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award.

21

With a passion for beauty and business, Elmien Scholtz, owner and founder of Bio Sculpture Gel has been awarded the Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award in the Emerging Category for the Southern African leg of the competition. “Winning this award was like an out-of-body experience,” says Scholtz. “I felt as if a huge mission had been accomplished. We have worked tirelessly toward this and it presented a great sense of pride for my brand and hard work. “When starting Bio Sculpture Gel in 1988, I did not imagine it would become a globally recognized brand; however, as a nail therapist I knew that it would become every other therapist’s choice of nail care. Bio Sculpture Gel offered a system that was completely different from what was available, focusing on nail care and strength.” Scholtz’s and Bio Sculpture Gel’s mission remains to provide safe, healthy, and cost-effective nail services. To date, Scholtz has grown the brand globally and exports to 39 countries where the complete system is used. She ensures the product quality with continued research and development.

China Glaze Beautifies Vloggers

Krackled Kimmie Leopard Sorbet

Fifty influential beauty video bloggers congregated at the Hollywood Museum in the historical Max Factor building in Hollywood, Calif., in October to take in the best of what the beauty business had to offer. China Glaze was invited to give the ladies personalized manicures with colors ranging from Innocence (a pale, sheer pink) to Platinum Pieces (a silver metallic Crackle polish). Celebrity manicurist Melissa Bozant was on hand with her assistant Nita Pettus to personalize the manicures to each “vloggers” personality, while makeup artist Annette Davenport applied Ardell Lashes.

Beauty Pros Are Changing the World

How does beauty change lives? The Beauty Changes Lives Blog answers that question by showcasing how beauty professionals and ordinary “civilians” are using beauty to benefit individuals and communities around the globe. The blog, located at www.beautychangeslives.org (click on the blog tab), is an extension of the Beauty Changes Lives initiative launched by the American Association of Cosmetology Schools in 2010. The initiative raises awareness of careers in the beauty industry and provides beauty school scholarships. The Beauty Changes Lives Blog is a forum where anyone with a passion for beauty can converse, collaborate, and inspire others. A team of guest authors — including beauty bloggers, salon and spa professionals, and students — share first-person stories of transformation, giving back, and inspiring others. The blog seeks feedback from individuals within and beyond the beauty industry, says Beauty Changes Lives spokeswoman Jenn Lyles. “Beauty professionals touch every facet of the world. Cut-a-thons benefitting children’s programs, domestic violence prevention initiatives, and complimentary services for hospitalized patients are just some of the ways beauty professionals give back. We want to hear from those who serve and those who are served by beauty professionals,” she says. Individuals can submit their stories to Jenn@ BeautyChangesLives.org.

Polished Lounge is decorated with an extensive collection of antique furniture and artwork. Its yellow wallpaper, warm lighting, and oversized chairs make the salon especially relaxing for clients. [inset] My cousin Dana Edelman (left) and I (center) pose with Polished Lounge co-owner Pauline Mai.

Polished Lounge Along with husband Keith Bui, salon owner Pauline Mai opened Polished Lounge seven years ago in the up-and-coming SoMa district of San Francisco after leaving a job in consulting. BY BRITTNI RUBIN BREAKING STEREOTYPES Salons are anything but new to Pauline Mai, whose mother worked in the nail industry for many years. But when she quit her job as a consultant and opened one of her own, it was still a risk. She and her co-owner/husband Keith Bui wanted to break the stereotype of affordable treatments equaling impersonal service, so they started by hiring a staff of welcoming personalities. “We know every single customer’s name. We’re the ‘Cheers’ of nail salons,” she says. They also urge their staff to take their time and give each client personal attention. The mani/pedi space — one big room in the center of the salon — is filled with oversized lounge chairs to sink into, each one separated by a curtain. EVER-EVOLVING Polished Lounge is filled with layers upon layers of design. The walls are painted in two-toned yellow stripes, and strung about them are paintings, streamers, and lamps. Mai and Bui are also antique furniture collectors and have integrated some of their prized possessions into the bohemianchic decor. But from year to year, Polished Lounge never stays quite the same. “I want the decor to be an evolving hodgepodge,” says Mai. “I add new things constantly and customers love it.” The couple recently opened a tea room next door called DarTealing Lounge, which nail clients will soon be able to order from while receiving services. HEALTH CONSCIOUS The salon’s core philosophy is to have clients establish a grooming routine. And Mai and her nail techs are well-versed in nail health. “Clients can come here to escape for an hour, but they won’t just get fluff,” says Mai. “They’ll understand how to best take care of their nails.” Mai and Bui have always believed in natural nails and even experimented with vegan polishes before they became a common option in salons. Additionally, Polished doesn’t offer acrylic nails, but recently added gels and gel-polish to its menu.

FUN FACTS > Polished Lounge uses an antique wine storage cabinet to display its polishes. > Because of Polished Lounge’s unique decor, people have tried to quote prices on some of the items, thinking the salon also functions as an antique furniture store. > Polished Lounge is a phone-free zone, per its clients’ request. To accommodate, Mai hung up dainty framed signs as a reminder. > Rather than setting up shop in an established location, Mai and Bui chose SoMa (South of Market Street) because the rent was affordable and they liked the landlord. SoMa has been growing in popularity and trendiness since then, quite to their surprise.

TECHNIQUE} Swirls ‘N’ Stamps

Kim Hanzlik of Winnemucca, Nev., shows how with a simple color gel swirl and a Konad Stamp, any nail tech can do fun and festive nail art. By inverting the colors of the gels across the fingers, Hanzlik breaks the monotone appearance to help each nail stand out and contribute to the overall look. 1. Draw three straight lines of the color gel straight across the nails. Vary the order of the colors for the different fingers. 2. Use a sharp-tipped object like a dental pick and drag the three colors in an up and down motion to get the zigzagged look. Cure the nails for 30 seconds in a UV lamp. 3. When all fingers are cured, put a fine silver glitter gel beneath the color of each nail, and again with a sharp object drag the silver up and down the nail over the color gel. Cure for two minutes. 4. File for shape and strength. And use the Konad nail polish design stamps to add text and illustrations. After the design is dry, apply top coat. >>>

A new e-book titled The Enlightened Tech: An Indispensable Guide to Clarifying Nail Service Terminology is available on the NSI website to help nail technicians across the globe. Set up in dictionary form, the e-book contains numerous nail service terms that are used in the professional beauty industry with corresponding definitions that are clear and to-the-point. Like their previous e-book, Building Your Clientele in 6-9 Months, NSI is making the book available — free of charge — to any professional nail technician who is registered on its website www.nsinails.com. “I set out in creating this e-book when I noticed how many confusing terms were being thrown about the nail industry. I thought, ‘If those of us in the industry are puzzled, imagine how the poor clients feel!’ This is our attempt at clarification,” says Jessie Burkhardt, director of marketing and communications. With new categories of products, new techniques, and a new generation of technicians changing the way we talk about nail services, the idea was to create a guide to nail service terms that are used on a regular basis, like “hard gel” or “gel polish”. The company hopes that offering this free material will show their commitment to providing the highest level of education for nail technicians.

Nail Tek Special Effects

The Swarovski crystals elegantly adorn both the file and tweezers in matching patterns so nail techs can groom and pamper in style. For more information, go to www.nailsmag.com/fifi/14412.

Q

QA } AND

How can I speed up my pedicures? I give full leg massages and apply polish at the end. An easy way to make your pedicures more efficient is to put base coat on all five toenails on one foot, and allow them to dry while you massage the other leg. Then when the base coat is dry, massage that leg, and when finished apply color and go back to massaging the other leg (which now has dry base coat ready for polish). Explain to the client you are going to polish in between the massages so that each layer gets a chance to dry and reduce the chances of smudging. — Jolene Ali is a nail technician at Sweet Momma Pregnancy Wellness Spa in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada.

Q

I am a new nail tech, and in school we only did acrylics on plastic tips. I came out licensed and loving it but knowing little about proper application on actual clients. I have taught myself through trial and error and with this wonderful magazine NAILS, but my question is: How much is too much primer? In my experience dipping your brush in the primer for each nail can load the brush with too much primer. If you dip your primer brush and drag it along the top of the primer bottle to remove excess, the brush will be loaded with enough primer to use on one hand. You only want enough primer to cover the nail and not get any on the skin around the nail. When you apply the primer the nail should look wet, but it should dry pretty quickly. If you have too much primer it will take longer to dry, and if the nail isn’t fully dry before you start your application you will see lifting quickly. — Amanda Lenher is an educator for Nubar.

magnetic metal particles in the gel, you can create fascinating patterns within seconds. Like the polish, these 5-ml. Colour Gels will surely attract attention. Here’s how you can use the LCN Magnetic Colour Gel for a fill. 1. Prep the nails for a fill by gently filing, making sure any lifted product is removed. 2. Apply LCN Bonder New. 3. Fill the nails using LCN 1 Component Resin. Cure and wipe with LCN Cleaner. File nail to the desired shape. 4. Using LCN Magnetic Colour Gel (shown is #4 Magical), apply a thick coat to half of the nail diagonally. Do not cure. Do one nail at a time. This technique keeps the design sharp. It takes a little more time but is well worth the results. Use an angled brush to make the color line straight. 5. Hold the LCN Magnet over the color for about six seconds, being careful not to touch the nail. 6. Add a silver line along the color with striping paint. Let dry. 7. Apply LCN Sealant to the nails and cure. Wipe the dispersion layer off and use LCN Olive Hand & Body Oil to condition skin and nails.

employee, a true independent contractor, a salon owner with employees, and she currently works on her own at her salon The Art of Nailz on the fourth floor of an office building in Visalia, Calif. She says, “I love my ivory tower! Being in the office hasn’t affected the way I do business. I’ve always preferred to promote externally, using marketing that reaches beyond my storefront to draw clients to me. So losing the storefront was easy for me.” With most of her clients having standing appointments, she’s not one to encourage walk-in traffic. “I find it really stressful knowing I have reserved appointments on my book and then I have to tell a walk-in client that I can’t accommodate her because I know I’ll be busy in 20 minutes. She’s looking at me thinking I’m just lazy or don’t want to do her nails. I hate turning customers away,” says Franklin. But there’s another reason why she’s not big on walk-ins. “I find that walk-in business tends to always be walk-in business. It’s rare when a walk-in client becomes a regular who schedules in advance and keeps those appointments. I just find they are two different styles of customers and I can’t accommodate both. “That being said, I have never had more walk-in traffic than I do on the fourth floor of a semi-secure building with no signage. Between the neighbors in the building, referrals, the Internet — I’m not sure if there’s one specific factor — more people pop in to see if I’m busy here than in the eight years I had my salon right next door to a convenience store/gas station.” Almost four years ago, NAILS asked Maggie to join our blog team after PHOTOGRAPHY BY VU ONG/KIMBERLY PHAM

seeing her involvement on several nail sites and forums. We found her sense of humor and frankness to be refreshing and thought we could give her a larger forum to express her opinions on the nail industry. She shares her likes (and dislikes) on the NAILS blog Maggie Rants [and Raves] (blogs.nailsmag.com/maggie). Between the blog, her website (www. artofnailz.com), and her Facebook page, she says she probably spends about three hours a week maintaining her web presence. When I asked Maggie about the biggest accomplishment in her nail career, I loved her answer: “I think the first things that come to mind are the same things other techs tend to say — getting to do the cover of NAILS, blogging for NAILS (super awesome!), making it to the top 10 list for the Nailpro Cup — but if I step back and stop looking at the things that make me feel like I have something to brag about to other nail techs, my answer would be different. My biggest accomplishment is that I do nails. For a living. For 20 years. Our industry has a high turnover rate, there’s a lot of competition, and personal friends and family are often less than supportive of making a go at a career they feel is inferior to my intellect and abilities (and often fails to provide a stable livelihood). The fact that I’m still here, covered in dust at the end of the day, is awesome. And I wouldn’t have been able to collect that list of ‘bragging rights’ if I hadn’t been doing nails to begin with.”

Trendsetting Nails to Blog About

A nail tech for more than 17 years, Auckland, New Zealandbased Leah Light has only been catering to celebrity clients for about a year but she’s already snagged a sweet project with celebrity blogger Perez Hilton as his nail-focused video blogger. “One of my regular clients, Zowie, is an up-and-coming music sensation, and when Perez heard her music he fell in love with Light her. So much so, he invited her from New Zealand to play at one of his birthday celebrations a few years back. One day, Zowie and I were talking about me contacting Perez to see if he would be interested in having an international correspondent. So late one night, I threw an e-mail together listing some of my recent accomplishments and letting Perez know I would be keen to make some videos and answer Q&As if he was interested. Within 20 minutes of my e-mail I got a positive response.” Her first video (filmed in her home studio by herself) appeared on Perez’s site on July 21, 2011. “This was my first time making and editing videos and let me tell you it is not a quick and easy process!” Light says. Now, she regularly receives specific video requests from Facebook fans and Twitter followers. For 2012, her focus will be on celebrity trends and answering questions. (The most common question of all time that she receives is, “How do I stop my nails from peeling or breaking?”) Check out her video blogs at cocoperez.com/category/leah-light.

5 Tips for Glamorizing Nails

Colleen Campbell, a Brooklyn, N.Y.-based manicurist with agency The JoeStar Group, has a signature nail style that includes plenty of funky embellishments. She offers these tips for creating glamorous nails with bling. Campbell 1. For one-of-a-kind pieces, browse your own jewelry box for scrap pieces of broken accessories. For ready-made embellishments, check out dollarnailart. com and starlightnail.com to purchase a variety of gems, rhinestones, and crystals in cool shapes and colors. 2. Campbell recommends using either IBD Clear Builder Gel or IBD Intense Seal and a UV light. She says, “The IBD sealant will extend the life of embellished nails beyond two weeks.” 3. Use tweezers for placement control. 4. If the embellishments fall off within four days, offer the client a free repair. 5. Inspirations for nail patterns can come from anywhere — your favorite dress, hat, and displayed art.

I’ve heard of low VOC paints and that they’re better for the environment. But how are the color choices and the quality of those paints? Is there a particular brand of low VOC paint that is recommended for commercial spaces like salons? The major paint companies have so many different types of environmentally friendly paint — some are categorized as low VOC (volatile organic compound) and some have no VOC. Low VOC paint is pretty common, widely available, and the color choices are endless. I like Sherwin-Williams, and its best low VOC paint is the ProGreen 200 Interior Latex. This low VOC paint is available in many different bases, so any paint color is available. If budget allows, this is my favorite paint for durability, environmental qualities, and color impact. This paint can be applied in occupied areas too, which can make operations less of a hassle and increases profitability to the owner. The most environmental paint is a zero VOC paint. Harmony is the name of this paint type for Sherwin-Williams. Not all bases are available so vivid and vibrant colors are not an option in this line. Low odor/low VOC paint is pretty common among the major paint companies. Even paint that is not classified as “low VOC” could still be a low VOC/low odor option. — Katie Clements is a material and trend specialist at brand and design firm Chute Gerdeman (www.chutegerdeman.com).

Client Consultations by the Numbers

nailwraps SOAK-OFF GEL

UV Gel Polish Has Met Its Match

Introducing the newest innovation Gel Nail Wraps are the easiest, most comfortable way to get clean, polish-free nails in just three simple steps. • Perfect for removing gel polish and acrylic.

The consultation is your first opportunity to educate your new client and impress her with your professionalism. The client card is an ideal method for guiding this initial conversation and gathering essential information. This consultation can be difficult if you’re not confident, so follow these simple steps suggested by The Nail Superstore:

1

Ask your customer why she has come to your salon. Just because she came in for a manicure doesn’t mean you shouldn’t discuss gels or acrylics with her. She may honestly have never considered that option, and so will be happy to listen to your soft-sell presentation of the benefits.

2

• Flexible design for use on and toe nails. • Easy to apply without wasting acetone on a full soak. • Unique material and easy-press seal create non-slip wrap.

Look at all nails; examine and point out peeling or cracks that may need to be mended. Single nail mends with gel (for example) are a great way to turn manicure clients into enhancement clients. The satisfaction of instant gratification in that new nail, as well as the way it will hold up may be enough to get her to convert. Start explaining the various options she has for maintaining her nails: natural nail manicures on a weekly schedule, gel-polish, acrylics, gels, wraps, etc.

3

Ask what shape and length she has been wearing lately, and how that has been working for her. Also discuss her color choices. Make recommendations based on your professional training.

Ask about her lifestyle, work, hobbies, and home life. Discuss and analyze with her how those factors affect her nails and her choices for her nails. Lay out your proposal. Tell her what you can do to make her nails fabulous. Give her some time frames and approximate costs.

Follow through. Have her fill out a client card (or ask the questions and fill it out for her). Explain why you are asking questions — to be able to provide her with better service. Be sure to document her visit and the game plan (on the reverse side of the client card) so the next time she comes in you can stay on task. Each time she visits have her client card out so you can refer to it during the service. Be sure to fill it out immediately following every service. Q

QA } AND

I am a seasoned nail tech and have just opened a nail salon. I need help sustaining new and regular clients in this economy. I have done many coupon sites (Groupon, Living Social, etc.) to build business and it has been a pain — plus my price point is higher than neighborhood discount salons. I’m not sure what to do to get the paying, loyal clients I need. As a salon owner for over 20 years, I find that coupon sites tend to bring in the bargain shopper who skips from shop to shop looking for a deal. Sometimes they come in once, or maybe even several times, but it isn’t long until they leave looking for a cheaper deal. In my salon we are not the cheaper deal, so this type of advertising is simply not a good fit. The type of customer I want in my salon is one who has her nails done as a lifestyle. The first thing you need to do is change the way you think about your business. Stop competing with the discount salons! Unless you want to do $15 full sets and mani-pedis for $25, you will never beat them. Make your salon and the customer’s experience the polar opposite of the salons that are discounting every service to get customers in their doors. Once you do that you are ready to start bringing in clients who never miss appointments and book standings that last for years. Now let’s talk about how to get those types of customers. First, start off with a website that is fun and edgy. My site (www.fingersnailstudios. com) is simple, but it brings in the majority of my new customers. Be sure that your site contains more photos than words. In our business, photos sell. Next, get your fans working for you. My best customers always come from the word-of-mouth of others. Also, partner up with non-nail salons and get your nails on every stylist and colorist you can; they love to talk (and yes, give them a professional discount). The people in their chairs are stuck looking at the professional’s hands and listening to them like an infomercial. Finally, get your salon name and photos of your work on everything you can so people start recognizing your salon name. Don’t be afraid to sing your own praises. Call and talk to every publication you can from newspapers to magazines and even local radio stations and tell them why your salon is so different. Take every opportunity to put your salon name out there.

One of the most important pieces of advice I can give is to make sure that each and every customer who walks through your door feels like she is appreciated. Give out small gifts or run promotions for regular customers. I like to play games and make it fun. One of the craziest things I have done was giving every customer a neon pink nail polish antenna ball. My staff and I would write down the license plate numbers of the cars we saw with them and we would pick one number and post it in the salon. When the customer would come back in for her next appointment and see her license plate posted, she would win a free pedicure for herself and a friend. What I gained by doing this was: 1. Customers had a chance to win something of value because they were a customer. 2. I had a chance to get a new customer by them bringing in a friend. 3. The neon pink antenna balls got noticed by the public (each one had our name on it). 4. The only way the customer would know if she had won is if she returned for another appointment.

BUSINESS} reader to reader Should you fire an employee for badmouthing the salon (when she thinks no one else at the salon is listening)?

Yes! If you work at the salon then you should only be saying good things. When you bad-mouth your own salon then it makes your guest think, “Why am I coming here if the salon is so bad?”

hope to gain some honest feedback as to why she was not happy.

Stefanie Piscitello

It depends on the attitude of the boss: Would she listen to the employee? Did the client complain and the employee simply agree? Should the boss not be asking the employee how she can make the situation better? I wouldn’t want anyone working for me and dreading coming to work — surely a happy worker yields a happy client.

Indulge Salon & Spa, Tampa

No, an owner should pull that employee aside and discuss what she has an issue with. They should come to an agreement. This way the owner has started building an open relationship with her employee and the drama can end before it starts. There are two sides to every story.

I don’t know about “fired” but I would pull the person aside and let her know that I know what was said and if she is not happy with the salon, then this may not be the salon for her. I would give her the option of 1.) explaining the issues or 2.) packing her belongings.

Step in and stop the conversation. Pull the employee/booth renter aside and tell her you overheard her, ask her to stop, and have her stay after work to talk. If it can be resolved, great, but this employee must understand that this kind of behavior will not be tolerated; there are no second chances. If she is not happy, leave immediately.

It depends on if you are an employee or a booth renter. If you’re bad-mouthing the business that pays you to work there I would say it makes the employee look bad and might make the client go elsewhere. On the other hand if you booth rent, then I think you have every right to voice how you feel about the environment you work in. You’re paying to work there and your clients come there to see you, not the salon.

Taylar Hillman

Bliss Hair Body & Boutique, Anaconda, Mont.

It depends. She should receive counseling. Ask her why she is so unhappy and if she could change anything what it would be. The nail tech might be a person who complains about everything and does not realize her demeanor is toxic. She should be given the opportunity to change. If she is unwilling to change perhaps it would be in everyone’s best interest if she found other employment. Document everything to have a record so it does not come back to haunt you.

BUSINESS} Is Your Salon Cell-Free? As smartphones become a familiar appendage on nearly all adults and many teens, salon owners find themselves forced to develop a salon cell phone policy. Will you decide to make your salon phone-friendly or cell-free? BY MICHELLE PRATT

“Feel free to text message to your heart’s content while enjoying Soak, though please

do your cell phone talking before or after visiting.” This polite suggestion functions as the cell phone policy for Soak Nail Spa and Lounge in Reno, Nev. “We want to create an atmosphere that has more of a spa feel and loud phone conversations can disrupt other guests,” says Soak’s manager Amanda Pequeen. Most of the time, clients don’t talk on the phone during services, or they answer but talk very briefly and quickly hang up. However, if a client does talk for an extended period of time, or raises the level of her voice, a staff member from Soak will gently address the client by saying something such as, “Excuse me. We have a cell phone policy so all guests can relax during their services.” In the last five years, cell phone use has exploded, and in many ways, the lines of social etiquette have blurred. Just a few short years ago talking on the phone in front of someone would be universally viewed as rude. Now, people are more tolerant. The lines are fuzzy, so making a phone policy has become necessary not only for clients, but also for staff. “We have a lengthy agreement we go over with all new staff,” says LeeAnne Swor, owner of L Spa in Sarasota, Fla. “And cell phone use is a big part of it. I want 100% of the attention to be on the clients, so cell phones are not allowed on

90 |

NAILS MAGAZINE

|

the salon floor.” Swor says all phones remain in the back room with ringers turned off. Technicians can check and answer messages during their breaks. Swor says she has no trouble with the policy because any employee who had a difficult time with it is no longer with her. L Boutique has a three-strikes-andyou’re-out policy. “I know some people have a hard time detaching from the phone,” explains Swor. “But to me it’s rude to use a phone in front of clients.” Techs at Sundrops Nail Spot in Phoenix abide by a similar standard. “Phones have to be on vibrate and left in the back,” says manager Melissa Aros. It may seem harsh to require the phones to be off the salon floor, but a vibration coming from the pocket or drawer will likely be a distraction for the client, and most certainly to the tech. Sheila Winckler wouldn’t have built her business if she adopted those policies. As the owner of Atmosphere Nails•Hair in Rockford, Ill., she understands the need for techs to be available to clients. The independent contractors who work in her salon use their phones as essential business tools. Each person manages her phone use according to her own standards. “If we are in the middle of a pedicure with lotion all over our hands, we will let it go to voicemail,” says Winckler. “But if we’re at a point where we can answer, many times we do.” Winckler says she has noticed a marked difference in both

the attitude people have about phone usage and in the way phones are used. “It used to be considered rude to answer the phone during a service,” explains Winckler, “but now clients are more understanding. They want the technician to pick up when they call, so they don’t get upset when a call comes in during their appointment.” Whether you’re a salon built of booth renters who utilize the phones to conduct business throughout the day, or a salon owner who implements a policy to complement the atmosphere of the salon, you will likely see one use of smartphones as an exception to the rules: using it to promote the salon. “The exception to phones being allowed on the floor,” says Pequeen, “is when a manager asks to take pictures of clients and upload them to Facebook. We also encourage our clients to take and post pictures during their services.” In this way, clients can promote the salon as a go-to social destination for friends or as a quiet and relaxing retreat. We may never develop a universal standard of social etiquette for smartphones. In the meantime, help clients and staff navigate the expectations in your salon by creating a workable policy. And keep watching for changes in our social mores regarding phones. Smartphones are used to instantly and effectively promote businesses and generate buzz, and that’s a feature nobody wants to silence. ILLUSTRATION ©ISTOCKPHOTO.COM/CHIHHANG

The 800-sq.-ft. salon is lined with floor-length mirrors to open up the space.

Nails: Any Kind, Any Time After a successful career as a makeup artist, Vancouver salon owner Mika Morris segued into nails. Social media, creativity, and flexibility helped this beauty industry entrepreneur rise to the top. BY BRITTNI RUBIN Mika Morris took an untraditional path into the nail industry. After working as a trained makeup artist for more than five years under the moniker “Mika Does Make-up,” Morris realized she wanted to do more within the realm of beauty. Her boyfriend Jay McInnes encouraged her to open her own salon knowing it had been a dream of hers for years. The two entered the business together after finding a prime space in downtown Vancouver. “I run the show,” admits Morris. “Jay helped with the design but has another job, so he’s more of a silent partner.” Named The Studio (by Mika Does Make-up), the salon offers everything from St. Tropez Tans to eyelash tinting.

The Studio is opportunely located just a few blocks away from Vancouver’s entertainment district, business district, and prominent gay community. Above the ground-level salon are residential units, one of which belongs to Mika Morris.

Lining the storefront window is The Studio’s waiting area, which is decorated with mirrored furniture, eye-catching nail polish displays, and royal purple chairs.

The Studio has a diverse clientele. And unlike your typical salon, over 30% of its customers are male, and about 60 brides-to-be per year hire Morris and her staff for their weddings. Gradually, Morris’ business evolved to better serve these crowds. She created the “MANicure” series for men who want a relaxing manicure or pedicure experience, but without the polish. Rather than paying full price — which would be around $35 for a basic The Studio manicure — men pay $20. Since The Studio is only a few blocks from Davie Street, which is located in the West End of Vancouver and known for its gay subculture, drag queens are a fairly large group The Studio serves as well. “We do a lot of makeup and nails for drag queens before a big night on the town,” says Morris. “It’s fun for us to provide those kinds of services for both men and women.” From the start, The Studio also appealed to brides. Morris believes it is the atmosphere, which feels more like a spa due to its outdoor patio area and high-end amenities, like complimentary boutique coffees. The Studio is also convenient for brides-to-be as it offers hair, makeup, and nail services all in one location. After a while, Morris put together different bridal packages for clients, such as “The Ultimate Bridezilla” and “Her Royal Highness,” most featuring www.nailsmag.com/fifi/14122

have demanding schedules, and can’t meet traditional salon hours. Therefore, because Morris couldn’t beat her clientele, she joined them, extending her hours to make their lives a little easier. “We try to be as accommodating as possible,” says Morris. “We know people have jobs, so we stay open until whatever time they need, usually closing anywhere between 6 p.m. and 9 p.m.”

The salon also has iPads for clients to use either while they’re waiting or getting a service. “I got them to cater to our business clientele,” she says. When revamping the nail branch of The Studio, Morris decided she didn’t want her treatments to be a once-a-year splurge for clients. Accordingly, she keeps her salon’s prices affordable while still maintaining spa-like luxuries. Express manis and pedis ($25-$35)

gel manicures and pedicures. By the end of 2011, the amount of brides per year nearly doubled.

AN AMBIANCE FOR ALL The salon’s decor goes hand-in-hand with its accommodating menu. Morris has kept the colors and furniture fairly genderneutral. “It’s not overly feminine, just classic and clean,” says Morris. She mixes modern design principles with vintage-inspired furniture to create a shabby chic feel. Pedicure customers sit on elegant velvet chairs raised by a platform with their feet resting on antique wooden chests. And almost everything — from the ornate frames and embellishments to the curtains and walls — are white, except for a few accent pieces: oversized champagne-colored pedicure chairs, red manicure desks, and purple vintage seats in the waiting area. “I always think white looks clean and bright and bigger,” says Morris. “It’s good for The Studio because the space is small and hard to work with.” A plethora of mirrors also helps open up the space. Morris also uses ghost chairs, or transparent plexiglass seats, at the manicure tables to create the illusion of more space, which is a tactic borrowed from designer Philippe Starck. UNTRADITIONAL

Color Therapy: The Next New Thing According to SpaFinder’s list of the Top Global Trends for 2012, color therapy is gaining momentum as more spas incorporate Ayurvedic medicine, an approach that conceives of the body in terms of seven chakras, each associated with a specific organ, and each, in turn, associated with a color. In Ayurvedic thinking, physical imbalances can be improved via color therapy. Qua Baths and Spa at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas is one of the first spas in the country to offer Aura-Soma therapy, a combination of massage and aromatherapy with the natural healing powers of color and light. Two treatments — AuraSoma Synergy (135 minutes; $400) and Aura-Soma Color Quest (75 minutes; $210) — are designed to bring balance and support to both the client’s physical and emotional wellbeing, leading to enhanced awareness and self-discovery. The treatments feature 109 beautiful Equilibrium bottles filled with colors, aromas, crystals, and light. These blends AURA-SOMA COLOR THERAPY SERIES/COURTESY OF CAESARS PALACE

contain 100% organic essential oils, herbs, and flower essences. Treatments begin with the client’s selection of duo-colored bottles and a consultation to explain the meaning of each color and how it applies to each area of the person’s life. Each color combination and the order in which it is selected symbolizes a different area of the individual’s life including personality, gifts and talents, present state, and potential. Clients choose one color to focus on throughout the treatment and that color is incorporated into a multi-sensory experience using sight, smell, and touch. “Research has shown that color has profound effects on an individual’s mood and emotions,” says Shannon Stringert, spa manager at Qua. “We created this series to help individuals interpret the way the subconscious experiences certain hues while incorporating traditional elements of massage.” >>> APRIL 2012

New from Backscratchers Salon Systems, Herbal Synergy Nail and Cuticle Enhancer combines oregano oil, tea tree oil, and cinnamon oil to create a natural, powerful agent that attacks nail fungus. Nails affected by fungus — also known as onychomycosis — can become discolored, cloudy, yellow, or brittle and they tend to thicken as the infection grows. Herbal Synergy was compounded exclusively for Backscratchers by cosmetic chemist, Dr. Peter Pugliese. A study from the Department of Horticulture and National Food Safety and Toxicology center at Michigan State University discovered a substance called carvacrol has antifungal properties. Carvacrol is the active ingredient found in oregano oil. Tea tree contains terpen-4-ol, a natural killer of dermatophytes, and demonstrates antiseptic and antifungal properties. Due to its antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral, and antiseptic properties, cinnamon is extremely powerful and effective on external infections, says the company. says...

During the past few months your station has probably already made your clients smile. Your clients may not mention it, but they certainly register the changes. Some of them might even feel uncomfortable saying something to you, but they do talk with their friends. Butler Use the changes to market yourself: Engage your customers into conversation with you and explain what makes you different from your competition. Talk about all these positive changes and how you are constantly improving your skills and practices in order to provide them with the first-class service they deserve. Tip #4: Your Hands — Germ Central Though required by your state board, most nail techs do not wash their hands before starting a service. It is really important that you wash your hands and that clients wash their hands. How many things do you touch during a normal workday? The amount of germs transferred this way is unimaginable. And now just think about how often your clients wash their hands … It is inconvenience that makes us cut corners here. Often we are so busy and see one client after the other. It seems there is not enough time to get up and go to the bathroom to wash our hands. Well, you have to make the time. I recommend having a bottle of liquid, alcohol-free hand sanitizer at the station. Wash your hands before you start each service and use sanitizer every time your service is interrupted (i.e., for a phone call). This is the fourth in a series of tips from Monika Herzog Butler, the founder of Salon Inspector (www.saloninspector.com).

HEALTH} under the microscope

Koilonychia Also known as spoon nails, koilonychia is an abnormality of the nail that causes it to be flat or concave and the outer edges of the nail to flare out.

Koilonychia, or spoon nails, is a condition where the nail bed is flat or concave and dips or waves are visible on the surface of the nail. The dips and waves are actually in the nail bed — but since the natural nail is attached to the bed, the abnormality affects the nails. In mild cases of koilonychia, nails appear to have a wavy texture. In more severe cases, the nails have a spoon-like indentation in the middle, and the center of the indentation will be deep enough to hold a few drops of water. Often the nail is split vertically down the center. At times, the sides of the nails flare out, the skin under the nail can become very dry, cracked, or split, and the hyponychium can thicken.

What is it?

The causes of spoon nails vary. The condition can be hereditary. When this is the case, multiple nails will be affected with some sort of concave dip. The indent will grow out, but the new nail will have the same indentations. Sometimes spoon nails are due to a client continually picking, biting, or rubbing her nails. When that is the case, only the nails the client has damaged will show signs of koilonychia. Severe trauma to the matrix of the nail can also cause koilonychia. In this case, only one nail will be damaged, and the client will be able to remember an isolated incident when it happened. Anemia can also cause spoon nails. Rarely, koilonychia is the result of a systemic problem, such as lung or heart problems or even cancer.

How do you get it?

Doctors will evaluate the nail and get a patient’s history to determine the cause of the disorder. The doctor may opt for no treatment, knowing the deformed nail will grow out; she may recommend an iron supplement, or she may order more tests to determine if there is a deeper cause. Treatment can also include an emollient that softens the nail and the surrounding skin to prevent splitting and cracking.

How is it treated?

Once a doctor has determined there is no risk involved in enhancements, techs can apply an overlay to even out and correct the concave nail. Be sure to prep the area that is indented carefully — it’s easy to miss a spot on an uneven nail. During the application step, press firmly on the concave area, filling in the small dips completely.

What can a tech do?

Be aware that when koilonychia is in the advanced stages, it is possible for bacteria to get lodged in the split nail or in the open, cracked skin. Sometimes trapped bacteria or fungus will turn the area yellow or green. Do not apply product over any compromised skin or over a spoon nail that is cracked in the middle, regardless of whether any discoloration is evident. Water can easily get trapped and bacteria can grow, even with careful preparation.

What else?

SUGAR OR SALT?

Choosing to use a base of sugar or salt for a homemade scrub is purely a matter of preference. “While salts are rich in minerals, salt-based exfoliants can sting and irritate freshly shaved skin. For that reason, I typically prefer sugar scrubs for pedicure treatments, since it eliminates that worry for clients,” explains Lela Rain Barker, founder of Belle Luccé products.

HEALTH} secret ingredient

glitter

1

A Little History: According to popular lore, glitter as we know it today owes its existence to Henry Ruschmann, a machinist in Bernardsville, N.J., who in 1934 invented an efficient way to grind up plastics into abundant amounts of glitter. He started a company in the same year called Meadowbrook Inventions, which is still in business today as one of the world leaders in glitter production.

2

How It’s Made: Sheets of plastic film of varying colors and thickness are fed into machines with whirling cutting blades that can be calibrated down to the micron. A client will request a certain size cut and a certain shape (most often hexagonal) and the glitter manufacturer will collect the chopped glitter and deliver it to the client for packaging.

3

.com

Why the Shine: The tiny flecks have the uncanny ability to reflect light as it shines off the many surfaces of each finely cut speck. Often during manufacturing, a sample will be taken and placed under the microscope to ensure the consistency of the cut and the accuracy of the shape for maximum light reflection. The rolls are typically plastics from the polyester family, and include polyethylene terephthalate, polymethyl methacrylate, and polyethylene naphtalate, to name a few.

Check out the “glitter” entry on NAILS Encylopedia, www.nailsmag.com/encyclopedia, for more articles on everything you’d want to know about glitter.

Glitter is tiny flecks of colored and reflective plastic used in the nail industry for its lustrous and luminescent effect on nails. It varies in shape, color, and size and is applied to nails using glue and top coat or embedded in gels and acrylics.

MALES Who Do Nails With a growing number of men opting to pay bills and forge careers from behind a nail table, NAILS takes a look at some male techs to find out what they think of their chosen profession and how they’re making it in a female-dominated industry. BY TIM CROWLEY

It sometimes pays to stand out. The diaspora of male nail technicians is larger than one would likely think, with personalities and

While a male nail tech remains an oddity in the salon, the opportunities for guys to create a career and livelihood in the salon are many. Motivated and clever male techs contribute every day to this industry in ways that might surprise you.

TAI NGUYEN, Q NGUYEN, RICK HOANG, Tempe, Ariz.

• Years doing nails: 10 each • Specialty: nail art

Nails By Males takes the male tech meme directly to its customers. Situated on the campus of Arizona State University, Nails By Males is co-owned by three male techs who have a combined 30+ years of nail experience. They decided to open a salon targeting the female student population with fun, colorful nail art, and it has become the place to get your nails done. Tai Nguyen, Q Nguyen, and Rick Hoang are in their late 20s / early 30s, and are having a great time. “We’re right on campus, so we focus on Rock Star Gels and glitter — those are very popular here,” says Tai. In the last six months, Nails By Males has become a smash hit with Arizona State University coeds. Its mission statement is clear: at Nails By Males the technicians are licensed professionals who care about the quality of their work, and their attention and enthusiasm are part of the overall Nails By Males experience. Rick Hoang, Tai Nguyen, and The kids can’t get enough of it. Q Nguyen, are co-owners of “It’s going great,” says Tai. He owns Nails By Males (in Nails By Males inside Pink’s Pink’s Salon on the ASU campus) with his brother Q, Salon. [right] The salon is decorated in vibrant colors and friend Rick Hoang. When Tai first moved to Arizona, from floor to ceiling, with nail he didn’t know anyone, but he was a licensed nail tech. art being the specialty. And the first friend he met was Rick, another licensed nail tech, and they decided to open a salon. The concept of a guy doing nails, the rarity of it, is attention-getting and thus most male technicians with skills can secure a proper clientele in a reasonably short amount of time. With Nails By Males, they come right out with it, and the result has been a great success with the guys offering the gamut of fun, glittery nail shades that express the school spirit and youth of its wearers.

one

Get a website. I’m not computer-savvy, so I found a service online (www.livebusinessmarketing. com) where I tell them my vision and they create it for me. It costs $40/month. I get enough referrals from my site to more than cover the cost of it. It’s a fabulous tool, and it’s been amazingly beneficial to my business. When people land on my site, I have their undivided attention to tell them why they should choose me over other salons.

to fill holes in the book. Our new tech had openings on Thursday and Friday from 12-5, so we put out an announcement on Facebook that we were looking for clients to come in so she could hone her skills; we got 43 responses.

18

RHONDA KIBUK, The Purple Pinkie, Ford City, Pa.

six

Set up e-mail marketing with a company like iContact. I ask clients for their e-mail addresses so I can send them announcements and coupons. In the e-mail, I’ll talk up the service and build excitement by showing which celebrities get their nails done the same way. I get new customers when clients forward the specials to their friends.

Run ads on Facebook. Control what you spend with Facebook’s pay-per-click. We set our ad to target females in a certain age group and within specific zip codes. The ad has a catchy photo, the ad copy, and our phone number, so people know we are local. It also allows potential clients to write our number down instead of clicking on the ad. Almost every woman in our client base is on Facebook and social media travels fast and far.

LABRINA WHITE, Luxure Nail Spa, Chicago

ANGIE NGUYEN, Studio7 Nails & Spa , Olympia, Wash.

KAYCEE WEIZEL, Nails by Kaycee, Modesto, Calif.

two

three

Use Living Social. It doesn’t cost anything up front, and it’s a great way to get new clients. Basically, you discount your services by 50%, so $50 in services costs the customer $25, and then Living Social will take 35% of what the buyer pays. We had great success with it. If you’re concerned about giving too much away, you can cap the number of “deals” Living Social can sell.

19

seven

Think of social media, online reviews, and local press as a spider web. Connect all of them to make the most impact: > Sign up to Foursquare so clients can “check in” when they come to your salon and post opinions about your goods and services. Their friends see the comments and are more likely to choose your business based on their friends’ comments. > Ask clients to write reviews through Google and Yelp. Google analytics compiles your “virtual footprint” to determine your position in search results. You increase your position through the number of reviews you have, along with hits to your website and the amount people are talking about you online. > Get on the “best of” lists in your local paper. It’s great local promotion and has an added benefit: Voting is done online, so your name gets picked up by web crawlers. > Master the press release. For the same reasons as the “best of” lists, a press release gets you local exposure with online benefits. >>>

2 20 10 LENZI BROCK-MOORE, Spoiled Spa and Salon, Vancouver, Wash.

four

Make a business page on Facebook, load pictures of your work every day, and tag the client and the tech in the picture so it shows up on their walls for all friends to see. We live in a small town, so through the network of Facebook, people see their friends’ nails and that draws them to our salon to get the nails they’ve seen online. We get a lot of new high school students and local businesswomen this way.

1

Everybody thinks in terms of how to get their name out there in a big way, but I have found I get the best results when I just pay attention and take opportunities to promote myself. It takes a little courage, but you get a lot of business once you become comfortable talking yourself up and handing out your card, especially with people you see on a regular basis. Always be “open for business.”

2 14 nine

Develop relationships with people who work in high-profile positions (real estate agents, bank tellers, jewelry store, Chamber of Commerce) so they have a salon to recommend when their clients and customers ask.

TOMILYNN RANDO, New Beginnings Salon, Owego, N.Y.

ten Offer a discount to people in your immediate

social circles. For example, I offer a $10 discount to women in my church, which makes me their go-to nail tech when it comes to weddings. LORI PENDERGRAFT, Nails by Lori, Spokane, Wash.

16 eleven

Market with neighboring businesses (including micro-businesses within your own salon). A gym, for example, has the perfect clientele to target. Offer a discounted or free service with the purchase of a membership. If you work in a full-service salon, do your coworkers nails and put up a sign on their stations offering a discount for services to first-time clients.

I create a photo album with 20-25 pictures of my work (usually something that shows off my nail art), plus my business card and a price list. I take the book to salons where I know the stylist and where I know they don’t have a nail tech, and I leave the book in the salon for about two weeks. I always pick up appointments when I do this.

sixteen I’ve found that giving — of your time,

your skills, and your experience — does two things. First, it feels good to help people and second, you get your name out there by doing it. We host a lot of events at our salon that help raise money and awareness for things that are important to us: local fundraisers, breast cancer awareness, community events, etc. We do it because we love to help people out, but what we didn’t expect is the response we got back. When people hear about what we’re doing, they want to support our business. We have found that in doing what we love to do, we build a bond with our community and loyalty among our customers. >>>

Anatomy of a In Studio City, Calif., ROB|B Salon has earned the distinction of being the first-ever nail salon to be certified as environmentally and energy-efficient by the U.S. Green Building Council. With the leadership of architect Richard Best, the salon earned a Silver certification by prestigious LEED standards. Here’s how it earned its distinction, including ideas you can implement in your own salon. BY SREE ROY

LEDs for Lighting

LEDs (light emitting diodes) are what you’ll find here, mostly the 4-watt variety. (Check the light bulbs at your own salon and you’ll likely find yours are in the 60-watt range.) In addition to using less electricity, these lights are great for correct color rendition, which is ideal to show off your nail colors properly. (Some green salons opt for CFLs — those fluorescent bulbs with the spiral tops — and while those are energy-efficient, they don’t necessarily show correct color rendition, architect Best says.) The LEDs are the biggest cost-saver operationally for ROB|B and one of the easiest changes to implement in your own salon, Best says. Simply go to a home improvement store and replace the lights, taking an inventory of your sockets first to figure out which ones can easily be swapped for LEDs.

Low-Flow Fixtures

As mandated by building codes (which may affect your salon in its location as well), ROB|B features lowflow toilets and faucets, which saves water.

Efficient HVAC

(Heating Ventilation and Air Conditioning) Selecting an HVAC system with a high SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficient Ratio) is a great step to being more green. In addition, at ROB|B, each nail station and treatment room has its own exhaust (hidden in the wall by each desk). Via a charcoal filter, the salon air is filtered, then exhausted up through the walls and through the roof to the outside, increasing the amount of natural air flow into the salon.

Green Cleaning Products

Green cleaning products are used for cleaning the facility, such as for the bathrooms, walls, countertops, and furniture. (Editor’s Note: The pedicure spa and implement cleaning and disinfecting products were not affected by this. To our knowledge, there aren’t “green” alternatives to these products that meet state board regulations.) This initiative was inspired by the campus-wide green cleaning program at Harvard University.

Alternative Company Textiles Program

Many salons use polyester, nylon, and other synthetic materials for uniforms, Best says, but ROB|B elected to go with bamboo fabrics for environmental reasons. Whereas pure bamboo fabrics are hard to find currently (the salon actually uses bamboo-blend fabrics), the intent is for the salon to phase into 100% bamboo, as the textiles industry develops this product. Best says of bamboo, “It’s softer than cotton and it wicks away moisture from the body. We used it for uniforms, towels, bedding, and robes.” This phase-in process, invented by Best, is now being considered for inclusion into LEED certification (which would mean the USGBC agrees it’s effective and useful for other projects, so much so that it would give other businesses points toward LEED to implement it). >>>

Indigenous Plants Only

In addition to bringing a spa feel to ROB|B, the zen-like planting design on the roof was a strategic environmental decision. Using only drought-resistant plants native to Southern California, such as cactus and succulents, ROB|B doesn’t provide any extra water for the plants to thrive. (Surprisingly, grass and palm trees are not indigenous to Southern California. They were bought from elsewhere and require irrigation to live in the dry city.) Xeriscape (pronounced like it starts with a “z”) is the word that describes landscaping that doesn’t require irrigation.

After applying for LEED certification, the management at ROB|B changed hands. NAILS spoke with the new management team who assured NAILS that they plan to keep many, if not all, of the green innovations in place, including keeping the bike parking and continuing to use green cleaning products (some of which were left by the original management). The changes, manager Debbie Wang told us, involve things like changing the salon’s hours (it’s now closed on Sundays and open Mondays), updating the service menu (including adding the organic product line Easteem), and bringing in nail techs from Korea, the new management’s home country. “All of our manicurists have at least eight years of experience and are very professional,” Wang says, adding that silk wrapping (with silk imported from Korea) is now one of the salon’s specialties.

The U.S. Green Building Council’s (USGBC)’s Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (more commonly known as LEED) green building certification system is the foremost program for the design, construction, and operation of green buildings. Developed by the Washington D.C.-based USGBC in 2000, LEED certification provides independent, third-party verification that a building meets strict green standards. LEED points are awarded on a 100-point scale, and credits are weighted to reflect their potential environmental impacts. Additionally, 10 bonus credits are available, four of which address regionally specific environmental issues. A project must satisfy all prerequisites and earn a minimum number of points to be certified. (For commercial interiors, Certified is 40+ points, Silver is 50+ points, Gold is 60+ points, and Platinum is 80+ points.) If you’re interested in building a LEED-certified nail salon, you’ll need to hire a LEED-accredited professional with solid experience for your project. Architect Richard Best, who led the team at ROB|B is now certified, but at the time of designing ROB|B he had not yet taken the certification exam, so ROB|B also worked with Venice, Calif.-based green building consultants Green Dinosaur. LEED is available both for new construction (what ROB|B was certified as) and for existing buildings (remodels). LEED certification involves a time and monetary commitment. If this isn’t realistic for your situation you can still practic the green strategies that LEED preaches, minus the official certification. (Visit www.nailsmag.com/health/conscioussalon for other ideas for how to green your salon.) For more information on getting certified as a green salon, visit www.usgbc.org.

Bike Parking

Being in an urban location gives a salon an edge because of the relative ease of alternative forms of transportation, both for employees and for clients. (The LEED credit is based on the benefits to employees.) ROB|B is located right by a bus stop, making mass transit a viable option. Plus, bike parking was made available in the back of the salon, with shower facilities (part of the treatment rooms anyway) available inside.

Bamboo Furnishings

Bamboo is a rapidly renewable material, and it’s present in many places in ROB|B, including in the furnishings. It’s used for the stairs, cabinets, credenzas, and more. “It’s beautiful and you can stain it like wood,” Best says.

Skylights On the Lower Floor

To let in more natural light (thus reducing the burden on artificial light), ROB|B was built with plenty of windows and skylights. The neatest thing? Even though the salon is a two-story building, there are skylights on the lower floor. Architect Best incorporated light shafts from the roof, which go behind the walls of the second floor, then spill out through the ceiling of the first floor.

FANTASTIC

Foot Soaks

Make sure you offer the most complete and relaxing pedicure service on the block. From liquid pumps with anti-fungal properties to jasmine-tinged fizzy tablets that refresh and rehydrate feet, here’s the latest on the nail industry’s top pedicure soaks.

Though billed as a hand care product, ESSIE’S Hydro-Therapy Revitalizer from its Ejuvenate skin care line can easily double as an excellent foot soak. The gentle effervescent milk bath revitalizes and softens while soothing and detoxifying skin. The fruit-based malic acid helps reveal smooth, supple, and younger-looking skin. (888) 745-4030 x14461 www.nailsmag.com/fifi/14461

ENTITY’S Rainforest Soak cleanses the skin with ingredients known to remove toxins and impurities. Pump approximately one to three pumps of Rainforest Soak into a comfortably warm bath; and soak for about 10 minutes. Infused with rich coconut milk, this unique formula soothes and stimulates the skin. Bamboo extract energizes and invigorates while the essences of the tropical jaboncillo berry create a sumptuous lightly foaming, cleansing bath that smells as delicious as it feels. (888) 745-4030 x14463 www.nailsmag.com/fifi/14463

Part of the full Heavenly Soles pedicure system, BACKSCRATCHERS’ Foot Bath is a soothing and antibacterial liquid that rejuvenates tired feet in a warm, fragrant foot bath. Peppermint and tea tree oils help soften and stimulate the skin, while fungus and bacteria are eradicated. Personalize with Backscratchers’ Aromatic Spa Drops to create a fragrant, tranquil experience. (888) 745-4030 x14462 www.nailsmag.com/fifi/14462

JESSICA COSMETICS’ Zenspa System offers a range of aromatic foot soak baths to soothe and relax clients’ feet as they await their pedicures. The soaks create a light foaming bath that cleanses, deodorizes, and softens skin. Choose from Energizing Ginger, Calming Green Tea, and the new Revitalizing Citrus scents. I need help selecting a good UV light. What should I look for? Is price a good indicator? Why is it important to ask new clients if they have any allergies? I’m thinking about doing a client survey. What questions should I include and what’s the best way to go about it? How do you thank your competition model? I have a 50-year-old client with hard, brittle nails with recurring ingrown nails. Can I help prevent the ingrown nails? How do I get a small business loan to open my own nail salon? What is the chemistry behind nail prep items that help with bonding? What are “color drops” for acrylic monomers? Why aren’t my soak-off gels looking shiny after the first few days? When mixing glitters, what gives more of the 3-D look? Why do I have headaches at work? How can I get my nails to grow? What is your policy when it comes to putting enhancements on teens? Is it true that most white gels do not cure all the way? How do I avoid raising prices in this economy when my product costs are increasing? What is the best way to handle no-shows? Why did my client’s natural nails suddenly become grooved? I have a new client coming in and he told us he has athlete’s foot. How should I deal with this? Can I work on his feet? How do I approach our employees about staying in the salon when it’s not busy? What’s the trick to getting dark glitters to cure when doing rock star gel nails? Is it better to perform pedicures with or without gloves? A client wearing acrylics wants to come in weekly. Should another coat of acrylic be added or is there another procedure to follow? How do I keep wraps from lifting on a client with poor circulation? Why do tiny white spots appear on my finished acrylics? How do I know if a salon is right for me? Will the chlorine in swimming pool water affect nail polish colors? Can a booth renter make a commission for retail in the salon she rents from? If oil causes acrylic nails to lift, then why are we urged to use it and to tell clients to use cuticle oil? How to correct a vertical split in the nail? Where can I find manicurist-themed wall art or good manicurist clip art? How do I get clients to book their next appointment after their service is finished rather than calling just before they want to come in? What is the average shelf life for acrylic powder and monomer? I am trying to keep my hours down and work shorter days but I just can’t say “no” to my clients. Any advice? What do you do to be environmentally friendly in your salon? When someone comes to me for an acrylic fill and I wasn’t the one who put on the previous set, does it matter what product I use? Can you embed nail art in gels? Should a beginner tech earn the same wages as a more season tech? What techniques can techs use to keep salon conversations professional? What causes artificial nails to turn yellow? What is the best way to market to university students near a college campus? What should I wear on my first day of work? Can you offer any tips for keeping my books as full in the fall and winter months? Is it true that when you remove calluses with a razor, they come back harder? Can you use any primer with any acrylic? What does it mean to be an independent contractor? What causes the burning sensation when gels are curing? Do you bargain when it comes to your prices? What nail shapes and polish colors are best for natural nail clients with short nail beds? Am I entitled to a key as a booth renter in the salon where I work? Could chlorine in the water make my client’s acrylics lift? How do I promote myself within a full-service salon when I am the only manicurist? What methods and type of equipment do I need for paraffin treatments? How do you warn your clients not to use lotion before they come in? How do I determine my fee for party packages? How much space do I need to have spa parties? Should we have clients sign a consent form prior to receiving nail services? What’s the best way to keep rhinestones on the nail so they don’t fall off as easily? How do I fire a nail tech? How should I respond when clients ask me why they should pay a higher price for my services? Why do you choose not to wear a mask when filing acrylics or gels? Do you discuss politics in the salon? Is there a product that would help with the swollen and irritated cuticles for my nail biter client?

The Numbers Game

also the owner of Soto Tax and Accounting, a business she inherited from her grandparents and runs with her husband Danny. “I do monthly sales tax reports, payroll, W-2s, and year-end taxes for businesses and personal clients,” she says. Her grandparents started the tax business in 1955. “I used to help my grandma by totaling receipts and photocopying forms. She passed away in 1991 and Grandpa took over. Three years ago, he decided to retire and asked if I would continue the family business. So I took some online classes — and still do — and here I am. I even see some of the clients that my Grandma did years ago.” Soto spends days doing nails, while evenings and weekends are devoted to tax clients. With just a few small businesses on her roster, most of her clients are individuals, including a few of her nail clients. “There are always deductions that nail techs and salon owners overlook, like newspaper subscriptions, music purchases (iTunes, CDs, etc.), paper cups, some clothing expenses, and donations,” she says. “The more organized you can be for your accountant the better. I do have tax clients who bring me a box of receipts I have to sort through. It’s like a jigsaw puzzle for me.”
