Ibiza exudes an aura of magic, and a mysterious energy surrounds the White Isle. The Phoenicians believed Ibiza to be a sacred place, blessed by the gods, and Nostradamus predicted 'Ibiza will be Earth's final refuge', cloaking the island in a mystical air. Es Vedrà is believed to be one of the Earth’s magnetic nodes, radiating a force that draws the spiritual and contemplative into meditative moods. BMI:MAG #25 is dedicated to Ibiza’s aura. In ancient Greek mythology Aura was the goddess of the breeze, the cool air of early morning, and we like to think Aura is in the air at Blue Marlin Ibiza. And so we have translated Ibiza’s magnetism into BMI:MAG’s pages. This issue features a light, airy design, and we present fantastic artists with a special charisma. Our fashion and design pages are filled with soft hues while Blue Marlin Ibiza’s food and drink pages will enchant you with a symphony of flavours. Ibiza rezuma un aura mágica y una energía misteriosa rodea la Isla Blanca. Los fenicios creían que Ibiza era un lugar sagrado bendecido por los dioses y Nostradamus predijo que la isla sería ‘el refugio final de la Tierra’ añadiéndole así un aire místico. Se cree que Es Vedrá es uno de los puntos magnéticos de la Tierra desde donde emana una fuerza que cautiva a personas espirituales y contemplativas sumiéndolas en estados de ánimo meditativos. This summer’s fashion mood is set with a renewed lightness as an array of ethereal fabrics and linear silhouettes with exquisite finishes grace the SS18 collections. Fresh, uplifting, joyful clothes take us to a fair y-like universe, surrounded by rainbow colours, sugar y pastels and sheer sur faces. Fluid, romantic clothes with clear lines dominate the womenswear runways. ‘Gelato’ hues return ever y season, and after last year’s pretty in pink look, designers have raided the Pantone palette and made lilac the colour du jour. Once the favourite shade for a grandmother’s wallpaper, lilac is now set for a major comeback. And combined with delicate candyfloss tones, lavender is turning into a fashion statement. Pastel hues continue to enjoy their newfound popularity on see-through dresses and draped shapes in delicate pale pinks, yellows and greens. Fringes, feathers and ruffles are designers’ favoured sar torial details, creating a sense of light elegance where figures appear like creatures out of the garden of ear thly delights. Mini-dresses, butter fly sleeves and long flowing textures add a touch of sensual weightlessness. It’s a sophisticated simplicity with unexpected elements. The result is a casual elegance, an aesthetically beautiful and discreet luxur y that’s a pleasure to wear.

La moda de este verano viene cargada de ligereza renovada con tejidos etéreos y siluetas lineales de exquisitos acabados que pueblan las colecciones de primavera verano de este año. Conjuntos frescos, edificantes y alegres que nos transportarán hasta un universo de hadas revestido de todos los colores del arcoíris, dulces tonos pastel y transparencias. Líneas claras, ropa fluida y romántica impregnan las pasarelas de la ropa femenina. Los tonos pastel vuelven para la temporada y tras el dominio del rosa que vivimos el año pasado, los diseñadores se han puesto a explorar la paleta Pantone y han hecho del lila el color de moda y el que una vez fuera el color preferido del papel pintado de toda abuela regresa ahora por todo lo alto. Combinado con delicados tonos de algodón de azúcar, el color lavanda está sentando cátedra en la moda. Los tonos pastel disfrutan de su nueva popularidad en vestidos transparentes y con pliegues en delicados rosas pálidos, amarillos y verdes. Flecos, plumas y volantes son los detalles favoritos de los diseñadores para crear una sensación de elegancia lumínica en la que las figuras aparecen como criaturas de un jardín de las delicias terrenales. Minivestidos, mangas de mariposa y texturas largas y fluidas añaden un toque de sensual ingravidez. Hablamos de una sencillez sofisticada con elementos inesperados. El resultado es una elegancia informal, un lujo discreto de belleza estética y todo un placer de llevar.

Las colecciones de ropa masculina de SS18 se caracterizan por una especie de vena rebelde y sin remordimientos, un aire como de chicos malos. Los diseñadores se están tomando en serio los conjuntos de ropa deportiva y los detalles de estilo callejero. Las chaquetas se superponen sobre el pecho desnudo, los pantalones son sueltos y fluidos, las gabardinas son coloridas, sedosas y en cascada a lo largo del cuerpo. Todos estos detalles dan vida a un ejército de modernos vaqueros urbanos con un toque de sobrio refinamiento. Es una celebración del hombre moderno, irreverente, impertinente y obsesionado tanto por una buena condición física como por el cultivo del cerebro, como si se tratara de un antiguo héroe griego en busca de la perfección de cuerpo y alma... Aunque el tono a veces parezca ser amenazante, en realidad es descarado y fresco, eternamente juvenil. Son prendas dotadas de personalidad, fuertes y sofisticadas, una nueva forma de vestir de carácter urbano con fanfarronería y asperezas. Es una línea informal donde lo que prima es la expresión de cada cual. Las prendas rebosan de detalles personalizados y de artesanía y están fuertemente influenciadas por el deporte y la moda urbana. La dieta básica del vestuario da un nuevo giro y el deporte ahora se une al diseño. Si nos topamos con un traje, veremos que incorpora algún toque distintivo que lo aleja y mucho de los cortes tradicionales de la sastrería. Jackets are layered over bare chests, trouser s are loose and flowing, trenches are colour ful, silk y and cascading down the body - these are the details that give life to an army of modern urban cowboys, in a rif f of under stated refinement. A celebration of the modern male, brash, irreverent, obsessed with both physical fitness and cerebral mindfulness, like an ancient Greek hero in pur suit of per fection in body and soul. Although the vibe seems at times menacing, in fact it’s ef for tlessly fresh, eternally youthful. These are clothes with per sonalit y, strong and sophisticated, a new kind of street wear tailoring with swagger and rough edges. A casual line -up, all about self- expression. Strongly influenced by street wear and spor ts, the garments are rich in craf tsmanship and per sonalised details. There’s a new spin on the male wardrobe’s staple diet, where spor t meets design. If there is a suit in sight, it has a tailoring t wist far removed from any traditional sar torial cuts. These collections have aesthetically spor t y appeal and tons of at titude.

THE FRAGILE BEAUTY OF MURANO | LA BELLEZA FRÁGIL DE MURANO
Opulent, full of light and colour, Murano glass chandeliers are genuine works of art. To call them simply “lamps” is to do them an injustice – they are beautiful, precious objects that lend class and elegance to the interiors they grace. They feature in royal residences, grand hotels, theatres and museums throughout the world. Murano glass means tradition, quality, artisanal skills and fine workmanship. Its story begins in the 15th century, and since that time it has experienced constant growth, helping to make Made in Italy skills and flair known across the world. The master glassmakers use many special techniques to bring these unique objects to life – the most important are glass blowing, glass “a lume”, glass “in piastra” and Murrina glass. The famous island’s alleyways will soon lead the inquisitive visitor to one of its ancient factories, fascinating places where production follows antique processes handed down from father to son over the centuries. Collaborations with such designers as Aulenti, Angelo Mangiarotti and Vico Magistretti reflect the success of the revolutionary idea of combining Murano glass traditions with design projects. Ancient, modern or bespoke, a Murano glass chandelier made using historic Venetian artisanal techniques is a work of art that embodies a thousand years of history and the dazzling glories of the Venetian republic.
Luminosas, coloridas, chics, lujosas, las lámparas de cristal de Murano son verdaderas obras de arte. Definirlas simplemente “lámparas” es reductivo pues son objetos valiosos y escenográficos, que embellecen los ambientes por su clase y por su elegancia. Infaltables en las residencias reales como así también en los grandes hoteles, teatros, museos de todo el mundo. El cristal de Murano es sinónimo de tradición, calidad, labor artesanal y experiencia. Las raíces de su historia llegan hasta el 1400 y desde entonces su crecimiento fue continuo, haciendo que el made in Italy fuera valorizado en cada rincón del mundo. Las técnicas más importantes de elaboración con las cuales los maestros vidrieros realizan sus piezas únicas son: el vidrio soplado, el vidrio al soplete , el vidrio sobre plancha y el vidrio murrina. Paseando por las calles y por las fábricas de esta famosa islita es casi inevitable toparse con los hornos antiguos, lugares fascinantes donde la producción sigue los procesos tradicionales que se han transmitido de padre a hijo durante siglos. La colaboración con diseñadores como Gae Aulenti, Angelo Mangiarotti y Vico Magistretti, demuestra que aquella propuesta revolucionaria de acercar la tradición del vidrio de Murano a los proyectos de diseño, fue exitosa. Antigua, moderna o a medida, si elegís una lámpara de cristal de Murano realizada con las técnicas artísticas históricas venecianas, estáis eligiendo un objeto de arte que encierra una historia milenaria junto a las glorias de la antigua república veneciana, con sus bellezas de renombre en todo el mundo.

Maestro costurero que exploró la belleza atemporal de la forma femenina, la carrera de Azzedine Alaïa se prolongó durante 35 años regalándonos diseños de excelencia y una costura impecable que desembocaban siempre en una constante búsqueda de la perfección en la moda. Desde su taller en París, el diseñador se hizo célebre por su meticulosa atención al detalle, por su participación personal en todos los procesos de la moda, desde el primer corte y los primeros dobleces de la tela, hasta los arreglos y el ajuste. Ahora podremos ver sus creaciones más destacadas en la exposición ‘Azzedine Alaïa: El costurero’, una muestra retrospectiva que nos presenta su increíble viaje y transición de escultor a costurero, su naturaleza inconformista y su enérgico anhelo por la moda, la amistad y el cuerpo femenino. A diferencia de muchos de sus coetáneos, Alaïa creó personalmente cada uno de sus vestidos con sus propias manos y siempre evitó doblegarse a las presiones y plazos de la semana de la moda. Su talento y su enfoque colaborativo le permitieron hacerse con una destacada lista de clientas entre las que se incluían Greta Garbo, Grace Jones, Michelle Obama y Rihanna. La exposición ‘Azzedine Alaïa: El costurero’ fue preparada por el diseñador tunecino antes de su propia muerte y entrelaza historias de su vida y de su carrera con vestidos que él mismo eligió y que son una muestra desde lo más raro a lo más icónico abarcando desde principios de los años ochenta y hasta su colección más reciente del año 2017. La exposición puede visitarse en el Museo del Diseño de Londres hasta el 7 de octubre de 2018.

What is it that makes you a photographer, visual artist, collagist? My creative essence needs to capture my feelings, beliefs, thoughts, conclusions, desires and experiences. Making these available to the public and receiving feedback is what makes me a photographer, artist, collagist. Technical collage evokes artistic avant-garde and social criticism. What truths do your works reflect? I don’t think that “truths” are absolute. My work shows how it is, how one is, without prejudice. I speak about women who love women, about death, love, fears found and transformed, of feelings that shaped a childhood…all my truths that reflect those of others. You have just been visiting different continents. How much adventurous spirit is there in your aesthetics? Travelling brings about freedom, walking on solid ground generates empathy, knowledge, it makes you live in the moment, be aware. At times it causes fear, desire and passions…all of this is transformed into textures, shapes and colours, influenced by the typical aesthetic of other lands or even that of my own land, because life in itself is a journey.
¿Qué es lo que te convierte en fotógrafa, artista visual, collagista? Mi esencia creativa tiene la necesidad de ver plasmados mis sentimientos, creencias, pensamientos, conclusiones, anhelos, vivencias...compartirlo públicamente y obtener críticas es lo que me convierte en fotógrafa, artista, collagista. La técnica collage evoca a vanguardia artística y crítica social. ¿Qué verdades gritan tus obras? Creo que las “verdades” no son absolutas. Mi obra evoca a mostrarse tal cual, como uno es, sin prejuicios, hablo de mujeres que aman a mujeres, de la muerte, del amor, de miedos encontrados y transformados, de sentimientos que marcaron una infancia...Todas “mis verdades” que pueden ser el reflejo de verdades ajenas. Vienes de estar viajando por varios continentes ¿Cuánto espíritu aventurero hay en tu estética? Viajar aporta libertad, “pisar tierra”, da empatía, conocimiento, te hace vivir el momento, ser consciente. A veces da miedo, anhelos y pasiones...Todo eso se transforma en texturas, formas y colores, influenciada por la propia estética de otras tierras o incluso por la mía propia, porque la vida es un viaje en sí misma.

What projects are you working on now? I have just finished both of my websites. I am also organising a permanent exhibition in a gallery. At the same time, I am editing my first photobook “America Interrupted”, a photographic report on the experience of living in a vehicle with basic resources on the roads of California.

Mi Muerte (My Death). Have you ever felt so betrayed that you feel the demons devouring you, ripping out your heart and soul?
Women are a recurring theme in your art. Why? My grandmother is a great example. A strong, positive woman with an open and transgressive mind. My family is mainly made up of women. I love women, in all ways - that doesn’t mean to say I hate men. Women have a special strength. I think, love and believe in a feminine way.
La mujer es un tema recurrente en tu arte ¿Por qué? Mi abuela es un gran referente. Una mujer fuerte, positiva y con la mente muy abierta y transgresora. Mi familia está formada, en su gran mayoría, por mujeres. Amo a las mujeres, en todos los sentidos, eso no quiere decir que odie a los hombres… Las mujeres tenemos una fuerza especial. Pienso en femenino, amo en femenino, creo en femenino.

This Polish photographer has the ability to steal one of your dreams and depict it in a photograph. His floral, delicate scenarios take you into a surreal world where nature merges with the body and rooms become gardens. His images combine art and photography while adding a touch of fashion, and are transformed into elegant paintings. El fotógrafo polaco tiene la capacidad de robar sueños y plasmarlos en una fotografía. Sus escenarios delicados y florales transportan al observador hasta una atmósfera surrealista en la que la naturaleza se fusiona con el cuerpo y las habitaciones se convierten en jardines. Sus instantáneas son una combinación de arte y fotografía con un toque de moda que acaban convertidas en elegantes pinturas. How did you become a photographer? Right from being a small child my parents instilled art into me with theatre, poems and films. I wrote my own books and poems, and created screen plays, short movies and digital graphics. However, the first time I looked through the camera I knew that I’d found the medium that could combine everything I love. My own creative world captured in one shot.
¿Cómo te has hecho fotógrafo? Mis padres me imbuyeron el arte por medio del teatro, la poesía y el cine. Solía escribir mis propios libros y poemas y creaba escenas, cortos e imágenes digitales. Pero la primera vez que miré a través de una cámara supe que había encontrado el medio con el que podía combinar todo lo que me gustaba. Todo mi mundo creativo cabía en una fotografía.
Define your aesthetic. My aesthetics are very changeable but there are a few constants. It’s conceptual, unusual and very personal. My shots, although often cold, even static, are filled with colours and stories. I want to show what I have in my imagination, a combination of mystery, beauty and the world around us, often hidden in the context.
Define tu estética Mi estética cambia mucho pero tiene una serie de constantes. Es muy conceptual, inusual y muy personal. Mis fotografías suelen ser muy frías e incluso muy estáticas, pero están repletas de colores e historias. Con ellas quiero mostrar lo que tengo en mi imaginación… una combinación de misterio, de belleza y del mundo que nos rodea, que suele quedar escondido en el contexto.
Your source of inspiration. It’s always been my own imagination, although I value many artists and admire what they are creating. However, when it comes to my own work, as far as possible I try to make it as mine, with ideas from my thoughts, dreams and emotions. I am also looking for inspiration in colours and in nature. I connect them with people, creating a kind of unity.
Tu fuente de inspiración Siempre ha sido mi propia imaginación, aunque valoro a muchos artistas y admiro lo que están creando. Pero si hablamos de mi propio trabajo, siempre intento que sea todo lo mío que se pueda. Saco ideas de mis pensamientos, de mis sueños y de mis emociones. The role light plays in your photography. Light is very important to me, as it is to most photographers. It’s one of the ingredients I’m experimenting with to give the desired atmosphere to my photos as well as a feeling of naturalness. Light makes my photography visible but at the same time I place some hidden meanings inside my images.
¿Qué papel tiene la luz en tu fotografía? Para mí, la luz tiene muchísima importancia como para la mayor parte de los fotógrafos. La luz es uno de los ingredientes con los que experimento para crear la atmósfera deseada para mis fotos así como esa sensación de naturalidad. La luz aporta visibilidad a mis fotografías, pero al mismo tiempo me permite colocar algunos detalles ocultos en ellas.
What’s behind your lens? Behind my lens, as I mentioned earlier, are my imagination, my stories, my feelings, my passions and perceptions. An alternative world with hidden meanings.
¿Qué hay detrás de tu lente? Como ya he dicho, detrás de mi lente está mi imaginación, mis historias, mis sentimientos, mis pasiones y mis percepciones. Un mundo alternativo con significados ocultos.
Current projects. I am working on several projects. At the moment I’m discovering documentary photography. I’m working on my grandmother's story, I’m presenting her life, but in a very different, creative way. In addition I’m constantly creating moodboards, props, set designs and so on. My head is full of ideas!
Proyectos actuales. Ahora mismo estoy trabajando en varios proyectos. De momento estoy descubriendo la fotografía documental. Estoy trabajando en la historia de mi abuela y quiero presentar su vida de una forma creativa y muy distinta. Además siempre estoy creando collages de ideas, atrezos, diseños para sets, etc. ¡Tengo la cabeza llena de ideas!
Where does your art take you? My ar t takes me deep into my imagination, where I can be my true self. And on this journey I find love, friendships and memories. Some of them remain in my memor y forever, not always translated into photography. Where it will lead me? I don’t know yet, but it’s cer tain I want to follow this journey of discover y to to the ver y end.
¿Hacia dónde te lleva tu arte? Mi arte me lleva hasta lo más profundo de mi imaginación, donde puedo ser mi verdadero yo. Y en este viaje encuentro el amor, amistades y recuerdos. Muchos de ellos permanecen en mi memoria para siempre y no siempre acaban trasladándose a mi fotografía. ¿Hacia dónde me lleva? Todavía no lo sé, pero lo que es seguro es que quiero recorrer todo el camino hasta el final.

Linder Sterling, a radical feminist icon and a key figure within the Manchester's punk and post-punk circles in the 1970s, is a musician and visual artist known for her photomontages, focusing on gender and the cultural expectations of the female body perceived as a commodity. Confronting sexualisation, her collages often combine images from pornographic magazines with images from women’s home and gardening publications. Many of her artworks were published in the punk collage fanzine Secret Public, which she co-founded with Jon Savage. Her retrospective The House of Fame is a mysterious collage of fragments taken from art, life and history, an autobiographical, unpretentious cabinet of curiosities and ideas from the darker corners of her mind. The show takes you on a surreal journey through death, desire and revolution. It’s an otherworldly voyage into an enchanted world of mystical masks and dark treasures - omnipresent in every piece – that are sensual and macabre at the same time. Historical references and mythological figures add an aura of mystery. The House of Fame is an ambitious project conceived by Linder. A retrospective of the influential British artist and musician’s work, spanning more than forty years of photomontage, graphics, costume and performance. On show, almost 200 works by some 30 artists selected by Linder. Stretching from the 1600s to the present day and gathering together the worlds of art and architecture, fashion and theatre, music and design, the exhibition includes works by Inigo Jones, Mike Kelley, Alison and Peter Smithson, Moki Cherry, Ithell Colquhoun and Heidi Bucher.

The title The House of Fame is taken from a ‘masque’ written by Ben Jonson, with costumes designed by architect Inigo Jones, performed for the Stuart court in 1609. Linder reveals Jones’ exquisite costume design, taking the notion of staging, performance and masquerade as the exhibition’s theme. A thought-provoking retrospective through the erotic and the esoteric, with snakes, laces and ectoplasms encountered along the way. The snake motif that uncoils throughout the show with depictions of Pythia the oracle of Delphi, priestess of the temple of Apollo, is taken from the crest of the Cavendish family at Chatsworth House.
El título de The House of Fame (La casa de la fama) se ha tomado prestado de una mascarada escrita por Ben Jonson cuyo vestuario fue diseñado por el arquitecto Íñigo Jones y que se representó en la corte de los Estuardo allá por 1609. Linder nos presenta el exquisito diseño que hiciera Jones del vestuario y le da a la exposición la temática central de la mascarada, la actuación y la puesta en escena como eje vertebrador. Se trata de una retrospectiva que invita al pensamiento transportándonos por el erotismo y el esoterismo en el que serpientes, encajes y encuentros ectoplasmáticos tapizan el recorrido. Los motivos de serpientes que salpican la muestra con imágenes de Pitia, la sacerdotisa del Oráculo de Delfos, se han extraído del blasón heráldico de la Mansión Chatsworth de la familia Cavendish.

It is both an essay on fashion and photographic portfolio, 95 colour and black-and-white shots, full of pathos, celebrating the deep link between Dior and the eclectic lensman from Ravenna. The collection pays tribute to the creations of a series of artistic directors, from Yves Saint Lauren, Marc Bohan, Gianfranco Ferré, John Galliano and Raf Simons to Maria Grazia Chiuri. The book also includes a selection of historic pieces from Monsieur Dior, recorded during a work session by the famous American stylist Grace Coddington. “Bringing the original garments from the Dior museum back to life on modern women was an extraordinary event. The dialogue transformed both”, said Coddington.

Every now and then another one turns up. Hidden in a private collection for over seventy-five years, a previously unknown canvas by Salvador Dalì has been confirmed as genuine by Nicolas Descharnes, who had also authenticated “The Intrauterine Born of Salvador Dalì”, the Catalan painter’s first surrealist work. The painting dates back to 1932 and is signed “Gala Salvador Dalì”, the way the artist chose to pay tribute to his wife and muse, Gala, born as Elena Ivanovna Diakonova.

The two met in 1929, the year Dalì travelled to Paris to present “Un chien Andalou”, the surrealist film he made with Luis Bunuel. There he met Belgian gallery owner Camille Goemans, who introduced Dalì to poet Paul Eluard. Dalì invited the whole group to spend the summer at his home in Cadaques. Where does Gala come into it? She was, in fact, Eluard’s wife. Extra-marital relationships were nothing new, though, as she and her husband, overwhelmed by his wife’s exceptional charisma, had already enjoyed a menage a trois with Max Ernst.
Se conocieron en 1929, cuando Dalí viajó a París para presentar “Un chien andalou”, película surrealista filmada junto a Luis Buñuel. Allí conoció al galerista belga Camille Goemans que le presentó al poeta Paul Eluard. Dalí invitó a toda la pandilla a transcurrir el verano en su casa de Cadaqués. ¿Y de dónde sale Gala? Era justamente la esposa de Eluard, quien ya era conocida por sus relaciones extraconyugales, entre ellas el triángulo amoroso con Max Ernst. Una relación que su esposo Eluard compartía, subyugado por el carisma de Gala.
When they met at Cadaques it was love at first sight for Dalì, but for the more calculating Gala this man dressed as a toreador had something special – an immense talent. As a result she chose to stay with him when her husband returned to Paris. Dalì declared his love for her during a walk along the cliffs of Cap de Creus, and Gala decided to leave Eluard. For his part, he bombarded her with letters, begging her to come back to him. But nothing could change her mind.

Gala abandoned the French poet and her eleven-year-old daughter to follow the artist wherever he went. They lived in New York, Paris and Spain, marrying in a civil ceremony in 1938 and in church in 1958, after Eluard’s death.

Gala was no beauty, and not an easy person to be with. While Dalì was crazy and full of imagination, she was austere and manipulating. She did, though, possess a forceful personality that Dalì could not resist. The relationship worked like a dream – despite betrayals, complicated personalities, madness, and perversions the two opposites managed to find a perfect balance – Gala was his muse and Dalì lavished devotion on her in return, immortalising her in his works.

Gala was more than an inspiration, she was also his agent. She sought to promote his art throughout the world, demanding advances and loans. For her, Dalì was the goose that laid the golden eggs, not only financially. At the summit of his success, he began to surround himself with beautiful models he would feature in his works, while she enjoyed the company of young men she took as lovers, rewarding them with increasingly costly gifts paid for by her husband.

Dalí fue para ella la gallina de los huevos de oro, pero no solamente desde un punto de vista económico. Cuando él llegó a estar en la cumbre de su fama, comenzó a rodearse de modelos bellísimos para sus obras que también fueron los amantes de su esposa, quien les pagaba con regalos costosísimos con el dinero de su marido.
In 1968 Dalì decided to present her with the castle of Pùbol, near Girona. She imposed three conditions – gold taps, elephants in the garden and an agreement that he could only visit if she sent him a written invitation. The rest of the time Gala would spend with her lovers.

When she died in 1982, Dalì buried her in the castle, choosing to live there, by her side. The years after her death were a difficult time for him and he fell into a deep depression at the loss of his beloved. One day his apartment caught fire, and some said this was a suicide attempt. Dalì survived but suffered burns after being rescued by his friend Robert Descharnes, father of Nicolas. Dalì died a few years later after a heart attack in Figueras, where he spent his final days.

Riva 110
Yachtbuilders have another construction material - light. Well, not light itself, but glass, which has now exchanged fragility for structural strength. In the 1920s the most you could expect would be portholes and skylights, but now entire walls can be made of glass. Cutting edge megayachts boast entirely transparent surfaces with square metres of light replacing aluminium, steel or any other opaque material. The result is floating creations like we’ve never seen before except as the dreams of some early 20th century designers. Some flights of fancy remained on the drawing board, but now they have become projects under development, already sailing or presented by the most famous, credible yards – brands like Riva or Benetti have no need for trial runs. Nowadays the physical limits separating interiors and exteriors are vanishing. Take the Riva 110 Dolcevita, for example. It’s the least revolutionary of the four models described here, as far as its relatively conventional lines are concerned – but it still packs some striking features. Launched in 2018, this 33-metre flybridge yacht - the result of a collaboration between Officina italiana Design, which handled its looks, and the Ferretti Group brand – has replaced large expanses of fibre glass with light. Almost all the main deck’s vertical surfaces are transparent, as is the long side window on the lower deck. The most striking transparent feature is the yacht’s “roof”, a huge skylight smoothly integrated into the rest of the yacht. What a result! Benetti has gone even further – the world’s largest private nautical group has collaborated with 46-year-old designer Fernando Romero, who since the early 2000s has been reshaping residential and functional architecture.

Los yates tienen otro tipo de material de construcción: la luz. Para ser honestos, no es la luz que sostiene a una embarcación sino el vidrio, el cual ha perdido su naturaleza frágil para convertirse en estructural. Para ser más claros, en los años 20 del siglo pasado, podíais encontrar ojos de buey o claraboyas, en cambio hoy se construyen enteras paredes de vidrio. Los megayates de hoy pueden llegar a tener amplias superficies transparentes, con metros cuadrados de luces que reemplazan el aluminio, el acero y cualquier otro componente para la construcción… Gracias a ello han nacido criaturas jamás vistas excepto en los sueños de algún diseñador visionario de los comienzos del siglo XX. En ese momento, aquellas creatividades irreales quedaban en la hoja del diseño, en cambio hoy son proyectos realizables, ya están navegando o, si hacemos hipótesis menos concretas, han sido presentados por los astilleros más famosos y creíbles: no sirve un sondeo de opinión cuando se trata de yates de astilleros como Riva o Benetti. Actualmente el límite entre el interior y el exterior llega casi a desvanecerse. Como por ejemplo en el Riva 110 Dolcevita. Su apariencia es menos revolucionaria que la de los cuatro yates que os presentamos en estas páginas, sobre todo porque sus formas son más canónicas. Sin embargo, este flybridge de 33 metros que ha tocado el agua en mayo del 2018 y que nace de la colaboración entre la marca Ferretti Group y Officina Italiana Design, la cual se ocupó de su aspecto, la luz reemplaza a la fibra de vidrio. De hecho, todas las superficies verticales de la cubierta principal son transparentes, como la larga pared de ventanas en la cubierta inferior y sobre todo, es transparente el “techo” del barco: prácticamente un lucernario 2.0, totalmente integrado con el resto del yate. ¡El resultado es conmovedor! El astillero Benetti se adelantó un poco más. El grupo náutico privado más grande del mundo ha colaborado con el diseñador Fernando Romero de 46 años, quien desde los comienzos de este siglo se ha ocupado de modificar la arquitectura habitacional y funcional.

Together they have created the Benetti Se77antasette, a 77-metre craft whose decks seem to interweave in a living structure. “The Se77antasette is based on an analysis of the Benetti DNA and how to exploit the opportunities new technology provides. This has enabled us to create a totally new yachting experience. The sinuous lines and play of adjoining spaces create a seamless eco-system, made more sophisticated with programmes and connectivity”, said the architect, the founder of FR-EE. The yacht also manages to conceal all the superstructure elements housing the radar installations behind all this transparency, and with an integrated structure in the glass at the apex that protects passengers and ensures maximum safety underway.

Tankoa Yacht pushes the limits with its Bolide, made in collaboration with Exclusiva Design. This 72-metre model has a floorspace of 600 square metres on the exterior decks and 900 in the interiors. Its radical design and concept of luxury is inspired by a vision that comes close to early 20th century Futurism. The yacht’s sweeping glass surfaces – a total of 500 square metres – seem to melt into the steel hull and provide an immediate, uninterrupted contact with the sea, while the main swimming pool (one of three) can be transformed into a setting for events and parties by a canopy that rises from the bottom of the pool to reach deck level. “Build me a beast. Don’t build me a wolf in sheep’s clothing”. That was the exciting brief the owner of Ngoni gave to the Royal Huisman yard and naval architect Ed Dubois. The result is this 58-metre yacht with spine-tingling performance, and where light is an element of the build. The entire main deck lounge is surrounded by curved windows that almost eliminate the deck house. Unthinkable even ten years ago.

Hay quienes van más allá como Tankoa Yacht con su Bolide realizado junto a Exclusiva Design. En sus 72 metros de eslora se extiende una superficie de 600 m2 en las cubiertas externas y 900 en los espacios internos. Su diseño es radical y la idea del lujo se inspira a una visión del Futurismo de comienzos del 900. Las grandes superficies de vidrio de este yate, 500 m2 en total, parece que se fusionaran con el acero del casco, logrando un contacto inmediato y sin interrupciones con el mar, mientras que los espacios a bordo pueden mutar: la piscina principal (a bordo hay tres), se puede transformar en un espacio para eventos y fiestas gracias a una plataforma que sube desde el fondo de la misma hasta llegar al nivel de cubierta. «Constrúyeme una bestia, no un lobo con piel de cordero». Fue el pedido que hizo el armador de Ngoni al astillero Royal Huisman y al arquitecto naval Ed Dubois. La materialización es este velero de 58 metros cuyo desempeño es adrenalínico, donde la luz es el elemento constructivo: todo el salón de la cubierta principal está rodeado por cristales curvos cancelando prácticamente la sobrestructura. When the first Red Bull King of The Air was held off the Hawaiian island of Ho’okipa 2000, kitesurfing was still very different from the sport we see today – impressive and risky, sure, but it could not be honestly described as refined and technically advanced, especially in its materials. Boards and sails, though, have made great leaps forward, and equipment producers virtually unknown on the windsurfing scene in the 1980s and 90s have made available kit that is increasingly safe and easy to control, transforming kitesurfing into ‘the fastest growing watersport in the world’.
Cuando fue realizado el primer Red Bull King of The Air, en el 2000 en Ho’okipa, en la isla hawaiana de Maui, el kitesurfing era algo diferente del que se ve actualmente: siempre potente y arriesgado pero no tan distinguido y técnicamente avanzado, sobre todo en lo que se refiere a los materiales, pues las tablas y las velas evolucionaron rápidamente. Las empresas productoras que habían quedado en ayunas del gran público del windsurf de los años 80 y 90, hicieron que sus apasionados pudieran disponer de inmediato de equipos cada vez más fáciles de manejar y más seguros de utilizar, transformando el kite en el“deporte acuático con el mayor crecimiento a nivel mundial”.
While its base was expanding, kite pros were working on their style and technique, although ironically enough the new tricks and manoeuvres brought them closer to the water than the sky. The invitation contest reserved for the eighteen most high-profile kitesurfers around the world, now held in front of over 12,000 spectators, was abandoned for eight years. In 2012, though, with the development of equipment better able to handle rough seas in high winds, a few audacious riders like Ruben Lenten, the legendary Robby Naish (an icon in both windsurfing and kitesurfing), youngster Flash Austen, Englishman Aaron Adlow and the strikingly blond Susi Mai began to practise their sport in sea and wind conditions that up till then had been regarded as prohibitive. The first experiments these air-to-sea missiles carried out showed just how high and how far it was possible to go. Eventually Lenten perfected the so-called Megaloop, a manoeuvre where the kite makes a loop while the rider is in flight, lengthening the duration and extent of the stunt. The downside is that if the kite doesn’t complete the loop in time, the unfortunate rider attached to it is dragged a few dozen metres head first into the water.
De esta forma, mientras que la base se ensanchaba, los “pro” del cometa mejoraron el estilo y la técnica, pero esto hizo que, irónicamente, las maniobras y los tricks fueran más cercanos al agua que disparados en el cielo. Por ello, la competición por invitación reservada a los 18 kiters más famosos del mundo con más de 12 mil espectadores en el lugar, se detuvo por casi dos lustros. Hace unos 10 años atrás, gracias a equipamientos más fáciles de maniobrar en un mar movido y con viento fuerte, algunos atletas con estómago, como Rubén Lente, el mítico Robby Naish (piedra miliar tanto del windsurf como del kitesurf), el naif Flash Austen, el inglès Aaron Hadlow y la muy rubia Susi Mai, comenzaron a salir cuando el estado del mar y la intensidad del viento eran considerados condiciones imposibles. La finalidad de los primeros experimentos de estos misiles agua-aire fue la de verificar cuan alto y lejos podían llegar. Hasta que Lenten pudo poner en su punto el llamado Megaloop, una maniobra que hace que el kite realice un loop mientras el atleta está en el aire, haciendo que la duración y la amplitud del salto, sea mayor. El precio a pagar por esta maniobra es que si no se hace girar el kite en un tiempo oportuno, puede suceder que el pobrecito que está sujeto al mismo, caiga con su cabeza hacia abajo a varias decenas de km por hora sobre la superficie del mar.

The sport may have its risks, but it’s extremely spectacular – take, for example, Joshua Emanuel, the current height record holder (measured by the Woo sport sensor attached to the board). He was in the air for 11.5 seconds (try counting from 1001 to 1012 to get an idea of how long that actually is), reaching a height of 28.9 metres. On landing he experienced a force of 7.3 G – in other words, on impact his body weighed 7.3 times more than normal.

The competition winner is decided on the basis of the judges’ votes, awarded for the height and length of time of the flights – this counts for 70% of the final score, and more points can be gained by combining with some manoeuvres at extreme altitude, while the remaining 30% depends on how extreme and radical the manoeuvres are. The competitive session lasts three minutes, and only the three best jumps are considered. And although disaster is always a possibility, all are eager to win the Red Bull King of the Air crown. Gusting at speeds of over 30 knots, Cape Doctor, the south-easterly wind blowing onto the South African coast whipped up the bone-chilling waters from 27 January to 11 February this year. Holland’s Levis Langeree came out on top, pushing Spaniard Liam Whaley into second place and Britain’s Lewis Crathern into third.

This traditional Japanese seasoning - golden miso - has been prepared in and around Kyōto for many generations, and it gives the dish a natural sweetness. You live…. In winter I live in western Germany and in summer I live in Ibiza. At the moment you are working on… I’ve been working on organising Ego Air, a one-day festival we held in Hamburg with Solomun and Dixon. That was our eighth edition. I’m now focusing on preparing for my Ibiza residency, Shadows, at Blue Marlin Ibiza. In Ibiza you are staying… in Jesus, it has a village feel and it’s not far from Ibiza town. Love Ibiza for… You find people from all over the world from different backgrounds, with different lifestyles, different beliefs and different histories – all united in their love for music. Your earliest Ibiza memory… with my girls having a beautiful day at Cala Llentrisca, Sant Josep. We spent the whole day and the early evening at the beach, and we had a wonderful time. Your Ibizan hidden gem… I will keep it to myself… there aren’t many secrets left on the island, so if you find one, it’s worth guarding. Your best Ibiza moment… I have so many that it’s hard to pick out just one, but this was a really special moment with my new track ‘The Mountains of Es Cubells’. I had a lot of fun creating it and playing it at the closing after party of Solomun +1 with HOSH and Solomun, and hearing it out in the mountains of Ibiza for the very first time. Your favourite Blue Marlin Ibiza moment… The very first time I watched the sunset from the beach with my girls. There was this magical feeling where I felt like this place would be a special one for me. You love Blue Marlin Ibiza because… I love being able to play in an outdoor beachfront environment, picking the tune to play at sunset is always my favourite part of an evening! It’s away from the main strips and attracts some incredible talent to play there…not forgetting the good food! I also know the team there really well now.

He was a young man whose key to success was to always be clear about his goal - to become a composer who would remain faithful to his modesty, his passion for music, who would take care not to give in to the temptations of a demanding, competitive and at times toxic music industry. All the artists he worked with have defined him as a great visionary and an enthusiastic artist. Within ten years and despite his physical ailments, he had starred in more than 800 performances, including at Blue Marlin Ibiza. When Avicii came on stage the audience went into a trance, frantically cheering along to the songs of a man who would become the first DJ to develop such a large reach within the global electronic audience. Despite his shyness, he was the focus of major festivals such as Ultra, and received many awards as best artist in the most prestigious ceremonies, like the 41 American Music Awards in Los Angeles. All the while he waged a tireless war against his condition, never allowing it to prevent him taking on tours involving up to three performances per week. Loved by the public, artists and royalty, he gave a special performance in 2015 at the royal wedding of Prince Carl Philip and Sofia of Sweden, held in his native Stockholm. But Avicii insisted it wasn’t the diets, psychiatrists or any of the rest that helped him - it was remaining focused on his productions. Tim found his medicine in music. Ibiza was his refuge, his launch pad and the place where he chose to make his farewells. He spent long days on the island in his studio overlooking the sea, working on "Stories", his last album. When Avicii decided to hang up the headphones, clubbers from all over the world were shocked but continued to give him all their unconditional support. His farewell on the Ushuaïa dance floor was filled with fans from five continents, just to witness a goodbye that Tim had a hard time deciding on. Since the early 1900s the transparent element of a watch has always been subject to cracking, as it was made of run-of-themill glass. For decades solving the dilemma of how to remedy this has been a top priority for engineers in the watchmaking sector. In the evolutionary timeline of the wristwatch, materials like hesalite, a type of Plexiglas, tempered glass and synthetic sapphire crystal are relatively recent inventions. Crucial developments, because they eventually helped watches to change their look and sometimes even their function. First they allowed designers to insert a transparent window in the back of the metal case, leaving the movement on display, then enabled them to reveal the watch’s inner workings when, surprisingly, the whole case was fashioned from sapphire crystal. Pure, clear, with diamond the only substance able to mark it. It’s also extremely hard to work, which makes it costly. It’s wonderfully sexy, though, from an aesthetic point of view, because once
people have got over the initial scepticism inspired by its similarity to plastic, it literally opens up a new world – that of mechanical precision, the more artistic and cutting edge the better. This was understood immediately by Richard Mille, a trailblazer in this context - he was the first to use it, and now brings it to perfection in the RM 056 Jean Todt 50th Anniversary. This model’s case requires 1,000 hours of work, including 430 hours grinding and 350 polishing. Incredibly, the specially shaped sapphire crystal of the Big Bang MP-11 by Hublot creates a magnifying effect over the power reserve indicator. Very striking, especially when the case is combined with a transparent rubber strap. An altogether spectral look. Other examples are the Magnum 540 Grand Tourbillon by Rebellion and the BR-X1 Tourbillon Sapphire Black, a unique piece made by Bell & Ross with a case made from five shaped and assembled sapphire blocks.

Este déficit ha representado por varias décadas una prioridad inderogable para los ingenieros de la industria del tiempo. En la timeline de evolución de los instrumentos de pulsera, materiales como el cristal hesalita (un tipo de plexiglás), el vidrio templado y el cristal de zafiro sintético representaron descubrimientos relativamente recientes. Su importancia es fundamental pues en el tiempo han contribuido a cambiar el aspecto y, a veces, también la función del objeto. En un primer momento pudo liberarse de la tapa metálica dejando su lugar a un cristal que mostraba el movimiento interior hasta llegar a quedar completamente al desnudo. The stones of the ancient city of Petra, Jordan, are cloaked in a timeless, captivating charm. This architectural jewel, which dates back to 300 BC, was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1985. A miracle of construction in the desert, it was a crossroads for caravan routes and shows many traces of Roman influence. Discovered by a Swiss archaeologist, a visit here will be a treat for all the senses, taking in its wealth of details, colours and sounds. The sheer genius of its builders thrills visitors at every step, carrying them back through the centuries among the remains of a civilisation that still cast a spell of solemn majesty. Named one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, in ancient times Petra was an Edomitish city, and then became the capital of the Nabataeans. It was abandoned in around the 8th century, and although its ancient caverns hosted the Bedouins for hundreds of years, it lay practically forgotten until the 20th century. Many legends surround the place – archaeologists believe that beneath city known today, blanketed by the desert sand, there lies another, equally spectacular city that is yet to be discovered. Visitors can reach Petra only on foot or on horseback. The most spectacular approach is from the east, through the long, deep cleft in the rocks called the Siq. At the end of the first section of this gorge is an open space, the site of one of Petra’s most beautiful monuments, the Khazneh al Faroun or Treasury of the Pharaohs, the most famous construction of the site, with its façade carved entirely out of the rock face.

Un encanto misterioso y antiguo envuelve toda la zona de Petra, la joya arquitectónica de Jordania cuyo origen llega al 300 a. C. y que en 1985 fue declarada Patrimonio de la Humanidad. Construida milagrosamente en el desierto y situada en la ruta donde transitaban las Caravanas, son visibles sus contaminaciones romanas y gracias a un arqueólogo suizo, fue nuevamente traída a la luz. Hoy es un lugar que da alegría a todos los sentidos por la riqueza de sus detalles y cautiva al turista que visita cada rincón, en cada paso que da, por sus colores, sus sonidos y por la ingeniosidad de quien la proyectó y construyó. Lo transporta en el tiempo, siglos atrás, entre medio de sus piedras y de los restos de una civilización que aún hoy rezuman solemnidad y magia. Declarada una de las siete maravillas del mundo moderno, en la antigüedad Petra fue una ciudad edomita y luego capital de los nabateos. En el siglo VIII fue abandonada y a pesar de que sus antiguas cavernas fueron ocupadas durante siglos por los beduinos, ha sido casi completamente olvidada hasta 1900. Las leyendas son muchas: según los arqueólogos, debajo de la ciudad actual, existe otra aún más majestuosa por descubrir, pues estaría totalmente cubierta de arena. A Petra podéis llegar a pie o a caballo. La entrada más impactante es la oriental, a través de una larga y profunda hendidura en la roca llamada Siq. Al finalizar el primer tramo de este largo cañón se llega a un amplio espacio en el que se encuentran uno de los monumentos más bellos de Petra, el Khasneh al Faroun o el Tesoro del Faraón, la construcción más famosa del lugar por su fachada esculpida en la roca, alta 43 metros y ancha más de 30, cuyo color rosa pálido se esfuma según las horas del día.

The Siq, the main entrance to the ancient city of Petra
It is 43 metres high and over 30 metres wide, with a pale pink colour whose hues change according to the time of day. What was once the sovereign’s tomb is a journey through time and history, although the Treasury can only be viewed from the outside. Everywhere you look there are breathtaking views of the rock’s unusual colours and banding. Most visitors stop at the Treasury and visit only the Siq, but those in the know recommend travelling the entire route to the Monastery, 21 km in all, there and back. It is possible, though, to relieve the strain by hiring a donkey or a horse-drawn cart. This is really the only way to appreciate the true atmosphere of this wonderful, magical place, where it is never hot, even in summer, because visitors approach through a series of spectacular fissures. Petra is an unmissable destination whose appeal was described in these words by Lawrence of Arabia – “You will never know what Petra is like unless you come out here. Only landscapes in childhood’s dreams were so vast and silent”. But our imagination can never prepare us for Petra’s reality. February is the ideal period to visit, a time of mild weather, sunny days, temperatures between 20 and 25 degrees, pleasant breezes and only a few tourists. For a truly unforgettable experience, try “Petra by Night”, a walking tour that reveals the night-time enchantment and majesty of the Treasury of Petra lit by hundreds of candles, serving as a backdrop for a good tea and Bedouin music and dancing. A visit to this unique place will leave an indelible impression, and visitors should spend at least a day here to enjoy its incredible hidden jewels to the full.

La tumba del soberano es un viaje hacia el pasado y hacia la historia (aunque desgraciadamente el tesoro se ve solamente desde el exterior). Cada rincón es un panorama que os sorprenderá, por su coloración particular y por la estratificación de la roca. La mayoría de los turistas visita solamente el tesoro y el Siq, pero os aconsejamos recorrer toda la carretera hasta el Monasterio, en total son 21 km ida y vuelta, alquilando un pequeño asno para aliviar la fatiga o un carruaje tirado por caballos. De esta manera podréis respirar la atmósfera de este lugar mágico y espléndido, donde jamás hace calor, ni siquiera en verano porque el lugar se despliega entre medio de espectaculares cañones. Petra es una meta a la que no podéis renunciar. Lawrence de Arabia describía así su encanto: “No podréis saber qué es en realidad Petra, hasta que no la hayáis visitado personalmente. Solamente las imágenes de un sueño de la infancia pueden asomarse a algo tan inmenso y silencioso”. La realidad supera la imaginación. Febrero es el mes ideal para visitarla: clima templado, días de sol (temperatura 20° - 25°), un viento suave y placentero y pocos turistas. Si queréis vivir una experiencia inolvidable, podréis participar al «Petra by night»: una excursión a pie que os permitirá admirar el atractivo de la noche y la majestuosidad del Tesoro de Petra iluminado con cientos de velas. Os recibirán con un excelente té y con música y danzas beduinas. Es cierto que una visita a este lugar único en el mundo no os puede dejar indiferentes y necesitaréis por lo menos un día para poder disfrutar plenamente de sus increíbles tesoros escondidos.
