1ST CAMPUS FOR WOMEN REFEREES EL GROVE – PONTEVEDRA (ESP) JUN-JUL 2010

Foreword In the world of the handball as in many others the role of the women is not yet so developed as the men’s one. In our sport the Women’s competition has grown in quality and emotion, and the public and media interest is growing at the same time. There are women players, and also coaches becoming stars in our sports, but there is still an area that the presence of the women is very limited, the refereeing.

1ST CAMPUS FOR WOMEN REFEREES | 23/02/2011

In al the Spanish competitions, there are only a few women in the list of national referees, 1 in the first league, and 11 in the other national categories, what represents a bit more that 5% of the total number of referees

1

The Real Federación Española de Balonmano RFEMB (Royal Spanish Handball Federation) is aware of this lack of development and through its Referees Committee (CTA) has undoubtedly bet for promoting the presence of the women in the national competitions. With that intention last year initiated a new activity in the research and development of talented women referees with the organization of the 1st Campus for Women Referees

Place, and dates The Campus took place in OGrove, a touristic and sailor city in the west coast of Spain in Galicia, one of the regions of Spain where Handball is more popular and developed, and the dates were between the 26th of June and the 3rd of July 2010.

The training camp consisted in a full week referees course but with the special characteristic of being established and reserved for female referees.

This course was designed in a concentration format in parallel to a player’s campus. The mornings were focused for theoretical lessons and the afternoons for practical activities, i.e. refereeing matches of the competition done in the campus with the direct observation of the course teachers and other type of lessons for example, body language and training of hand signals. The course was developed in a very friendly atmosphere; and the participants in the course were very enthusiastic with the content of the course. The final number of female referees that attended to the Campus was 46. Before the campus started there were some more registrations, but some of the referees registered finally couldn’t attend the course, and the final number was the mentioned 46. In any case the CTA considers a big success the number of participants in the course for the very first time it is organized.

The most of the women in the course were already active referees in regional and some also in national competitions, but for a limited number of people the course was their first experience as referees, and this is a big part of the success of the Campus.
