Entrepreneur James Balfour launched the very first Pure Fitness club in Warsaw’s Blue City in June 2008, followed quickly by more clubs in Warsaw, Krakow, Prague, Sofia, Budapest, and Bratislava. With more than 30 clubs planned by year-end 2011, the firm plans to accelerate the pace of expansion in 2012, with plans to open another 30 clubs. Pure clubs range in size from 1500 sqm to 2300 sqm. Balfour said Pure targets cities which have a minimum of 200,000 inhabitants within a 10-minute driving distance. Pure’s best location is Zlote Tarasy in Warsaw, which has more than 5,000 members. “We are looking for locations with the lowest rent! Typically we take the space that retailers can’t take and we add value by driving footfall into and around the shopping centre”, said Balfour.

Another key component of the business model is location. Pure only opens in shopping centres, and plans to keep close operating control over the facilities by not franchising the concept. “We spend about 2 million euro per club, and invest a lot in the fit-out”, said Balfour. He said that opening in shopping centres is consistent with Pure’s expansion plans, since new shopping centres are opening at a rapid pace in emerging markets. “It’s hard to get space in existing shopping centres”, said Balfour.

“We are the largest operator in CEE, spanning from the Baltics to the Black Sea, and the fastestgrowing in the world”, said James Balfour. “The fitness business is an immature and fragmented industry – and still a young one, especially in central Europe.” He said that only 0,6% of Poles belong to a fitness club, and cited the US number of 12% as reference. Balfour said Pure’s business model aims to bring affordable fitness membership to the region, by having high-quality facilities, equipment and staff – but then “stripping out the wet areas, such as saunas, steam rooms, and swimming pools, which add extra operating costs”. The result is Pure Fitness, which can afford to set membership prices at about 25-30 euro per month. Yet in select locations, such as Warsaw’s Zlote Tarasy, they have added back the “wet areas”, for a more demanding clientele, and charge slightly higher monthly membership fees – of about 35-45 euro – for the Pure Health &Fitness clue, or higher-end Pure Platinum.
