Editor’s note

S

o, look at us now. The last 14 days have changed so many things in so many ways. It may have changed your path or redirected your attention but one thing still remained a constant. We still had to go to the barn. Now the barn has become a refuge. We are lucky in that our barn is a little tiny private barn with 4 horses. We are still able to come and go as we please without bothering anyone and we still have our fields and trails to ride on without worry of social distancing or problems. Let’s face it, as equestrians we’re lucky. Our love for the sport and the need for equine excersise and attention keep us busy in times like these. Having said that, we embarked on this Spring Issue well before the dreaded Covid_19 started to affect our world as we know it. There were still events, races, meets, and travel opportunities. Now, we are stuck in a vulnerable place with little knowledge of the future. Our issue was our Bucket List issue, yes feel free to laugh at this moment. But we still believe that dreaming and planning for the future should still be as present in our minds as it was before. It is important in times like these to have something to look forward to in order to help alleviate the stress or fear we may be harboring. We also wanted to make sure that in this time, everyone had access to the publication as events have been cancelled or postponed. We hope this issue, which we are making available for free until we are able to return to our normal printing schedule, helps you, the reader, dream to a better tomorrow and encourages you to have faith that we will over come this threat and once again be living a normal life. Until then keep riding. They can’t take that away from us. Wishing you safety, health and prosperity to overcome. Cheers!

A big thanks to everyone! Shelli Wright & Christopher Bredesen Editors | Co-founders

fashion

compiled by EQluxe Alessandro Michele’s elaborate show notes offered a clue: “Fashion has a function: to let people walk through fields of possibilities . . . sacralizing every form of diversity and feeding indispensable self-determination skills.” Gucci’s Spring 2020 collection not only made a statement with their horse romp campaign through Los Angeles, but Michele has managed to bring the brand back by a stampede. Let’s admit it though, all the weird vintage mismatched weirdness aside, we’re pretty happy to see the horsebit buckles and riding crops taking over the world again, right?

STRIPPED DOWN Allesandro Michelle started the show with models in straightjackets, a blank canvas to work from. Well, a stripped down version isn’t as easy as it looks. Here are some key products. If you want to take it to the next level like the later part of the show, we added the lashes, although probably a bit much for daily wear.

Synonymous for its warm & genuine hospitality or Céad Míle Fáilte (One Hundred Thousand

Welcomes), Ireland is also known as the “Land of the Horse” for the Irish’s long-standing affinity for their cherished equines. When you put these two together, you are destined to have one fantastic riding adventure! There are few things more exhilarating than a swift gallop down a long beach with the wind in one’s hair and the ocean spray on one’s face. Add the colorful backdrop of the crystal blue waters of the mighty Atlantic, the vibrant green fields of the Irish countryside, and it becomes a surreal experience. Let’s go!

The Merrion Hotel

If you are looking for an epic riding vacation

filled with excellent cuisine, luxurious accommodations, iconic sites, and lively evenings full with traditional Irish music and friendly locals, you will love the bespoke itinerary: ‘Dublin City, Country Estates and The Iconic North Coast’ offered exclusively by Ireland Equestrian Tours. This 6- Night itinerary includes: 1 Night Dublin City, 3 Nights in County Antrim, and 2 nights at Castle Leslie Estate in County Monaghan.

Day One – Dublin City

Escape the bustle of the Dublin Airport to the luxurious oasis of The Merrion Hotel, one of the city’s most prestigious hotels. Popular with art lovers, The Merrion contains the largest private collection of 19th and 20th century art in Ireland, including works by Post-Impressionist painter Paul Henry and Impressionist William Leech. Unwind in The Merrion Spa and Health Club which includes an 18-meter swimming pool or enjoy afternoon tea overlooking the hotel’s landscaped gardens before heading out to explore the area. The Merrion sits on the steps of St. Stephen’s Green, the National Museum of Ireland and nearby Grafton Street, Dublin’s premiere shopping district. Spend the evening dining in the famous ‘Restaurant Patrick Guilbaud’, one of Ireland’s twoMichelin-starred restaurants which is situated in No. 21 of The Merrion, before retiring for the evening.

Day Two – The Iconic Causeway Coast

Bushmill Inn

Tourism Ireland

After breakfast, you will be transported to County Antrim in Northern Ireland. Today’s route is a rolling slideshow of historic castles, quaint fishing villages and an ever-changing canvas of landscapes: endless beaches, hidden verdant valleys, rugged coastlines & majestic cliffs, all overlooking the wild Atlantic! With over 120-miles of breathtaking scenery, it is no wonder this coastal route is lauded by National Geographic as one of the most scenic drives in the world. Spend the afternoon at the farm of your riding hosts where you’ll meet the horses and enjoy quintessential Irish hospitality: warm smiles, hot tea, fresh-baked scones with strawberries and cream, homemade lemon cakes and great conversation. Today’s horseback ride takes place high up in Slieveanorra Forest to the summit of Orra Mountain. Here you will experience some of the most breathtaking panoramic views Ireland has to offer---from the Inner Hebrides off the Scottish Coast, all the way to the Mourne Mountains in County Down. The day ends at the Award-winning, Bushmills Inn. Your home for the next three nights, Bushmills Inn was originally a Coaching Inn from the 1600s. Steeped in history with a myriad of places to explore; from roaring turf fires to hayloft snugs, and a pub still lit by original gas lights, Bushmills is a guest favorite. The creative cuisine sourced from local farmers and fisherman, makes dining at the Bushmills Inn a culinary treat. The menu showcases the finest Irish produce in the country with an extensive wine list to appeal to all tastes. With luxurious four-poster beds adorned with crisp white linens & snugly duvets, well-appointed bathrooms with free standing tubs and Elemis toiletries, it is guaranteed you’ll sleep like a baby in preparations for tomorrows epic riding adventure.

Day Three – If your bucket list includes ‘galloping a horse on miles of white sand beach’ today is the day! Benone Beach, Mussenden Temple, Binevenagh Mountain

The day begins at Downhill Beach where you’ll ride under the towering basalt cliffs towards Mussenden Temple. Inspired by the Roman Temple of Vesta in Rome, Mussenden Temple is regally perched some 120-feet above the Atlantic Ocean. Once the summer library for Frederick Augustus Hervey, Bishop of Derry and Earl of Bristol, Mussenden Temple sits behind the ruins of the Earl’s 18th century home, Downhill House. Benone Beach is perfect for long canters or fast gallops. You’ll ride across miles of flat open beach before arriving at Magilligan Point. Afterwards, head over sand dunes and stopping to view the waterfalls cascading of the majestic cliffs of Binevenagh mountain. Leaving the beach, sneak through the Bishops Gate, once the main entrance to Downhill House towards the seaside town of Castlerock for lunch. The afternoon is spent at Binevenagh Mountain for a leisurely ride through the forest to Binevenagh Lake. This secluded lake rests on a picturesque plateau with panoramic views over the North coast to Lough Foyle, Donegal to Derry city and the Antrim Hills and beyond.

Day Four – Whiterocks Beach, Dunluce Castle, The Giants Causeway

Your ride begins at Whiterocks beach, named after the gleaming white chalk cliffs and caverns that flank this picturesque beach. The west end of the beach is adjacent to the seaside town of Portrush and backs up to the grassy links of the world-famous Royal Portrush Golf Club. Whiterocks beach looks out over the Skerries, a small group of islands off the coast of Portrush, and iconic Dunluce Castle, County Donegal and the Western Isles of Scotland. From here, ride towards the mighty Dunluce Castle, regally perched on the edge of the Atlantic. While the horses graze in fields beside the castle, enjoy refreshments & epic photo opportunities before heading to the UNESCO World Heritage site: The Giants Causeway. Crossing the River Bush and following an old train track across sand dunes past the stately Runkerry House, arrive at the Giant’s Causeway in grand fashion. Dismount and head to the Visitor Centre to discover a story that’s close to the heart of this world-famous site. The star of the show is Finn McCool– an Irish giant who picked a fight with Scottish big man Benandonner. Legend has it that the giants loathed each other. One day after enduring insults from Benandonner, Finn built a path to use as stepping-stones to reach Scotland, which was then ripped up by Benandonner. The result was the Giant’s Causeway. As you stand on the hills that gently arc this precious place, look down on the thousands of basalt columns tumbling down into the Atlantic Ocean. It’s an epic sight, with a whopping 40,000 or so of these hexagonal-shaped pillars, which dates back to a volcanic age almost 60 million years ago.

Day Five – We’re ready for Castle Leslie

Nestled on 1,000 acres of the undulating Irish countryside, dotted with ancient woodlands and glittering lakes, Castle Leslie Estate is one of the last great Irish estates still in the hands of its founding family. Considered to be one of the finest castles Ireland has to offer, Castle Leslie is the epitome of Irish aristocracy and a magical setting for riding enthusiasts. Known as one of Europe’s finest equestrian playgrounds—riders can spend the afternoon on a leisurely estate trek with picnic on the castle’s expansive grounds or take an exhilarating cross-country ride. The Equestrian Centre combines the authentic charm of a country estate

Castle Leslie Estate

with all the amenities you’d expect from Ireland’s best horse-riding facility: pristine Irish countryside, approximately 300 cross-country jumps including ditches, banks, and a water complex, 21 miles of meandering bridleways, and a mile-long all-weather galloping track. On arrival, you’ll meet the equestrian team & horses, head out for a picturesque afternoon ride around the magnificent estate – enjoying woodland trails and miles of manicured paths. If you’re lucky, you’ll catch site of the large herd of Sika Deer that live on the estate. This evening enjoy dinner in the estates 2-AA Rosette Restaurant, Snaffles. Signature dishes are cooked with superb, locally-sourced food prepared and presented with imagination and flair. The diverse courses make Snaffles Restaurant one of County Monaghan’s top restaurants.

Breakfast at Castle Leslie plays a big part of the dining experience! Choose from an array of delectable breakfast dishes created from locally sourced ingredients. From the traditional Full Irish Breakfast to Eggs Benedict, you’ll love the breakfast affair at Castle Leslie. This morning ride out on the estate grounds or practice some x-country jumping! You’ll get the opportunity to have your picture taken in the famous lake in front of the castle -A perfect keepsake of your castle stay and riding holiday. The afternoon is on your own -- relax with a deep tissue massage in the Victorian Treatment rooms or indulge in Afternoon Tea in the Blue Room.

Day Seven - Departure

Your driver will collect you from Castle Leslie and transport you to the Dublin Airport for your return flight home.

Patience seems to be the cure. When we shot this editorial with the lovely Zinta Braukis Rewald, the world we lived in was different. Let’s face it, the current climate is not ideal. No one can argue that we haven’t seen better days. But like every equestrian emerging from winter into spring maybe we can set focus on what lies in our future and see the straight line at the end of the learning curve.

Interview with Laura Gardner, the first woman to ever ride on the infamous King Abdulaziz Racetrack in Saudi Arabia, home of the Saudi Cup.

February 29th marked the day for the World’s Most Valuable Horse Race, the Saudi Cup. But it was February 24th that the first woman in the history of Saudi Racing to ever be allowed to ride on the track. Laura Gardner, an exercise rider for Bill Mott made history when she took Tacitus onto the track. A momentous day for all and a fabulous achievement for women equestrians everywhere. We caught up with Laura the day after her ride. Here is what we learned.

In her own words……

I am having a fantastic time over here in Saudi Arabia. It was amazing to be the first woman to ride on King Abdulaziz racetrack in Saudi. It has gone down in history. And I’m so honored that it was me! I have met some amazing people over here and also got to meet Prince Bandar. I had never ridden Tacitus before I came to Saudi Arabia. Working for Bill Mott was brilliant and I felt that I learnt so much more while riding in America. I learnt more about pace and marker poles on the track and also the american lingo such as work from the 3/8ths, I hadn’t a clue what that meant before. It was working for Bill Mott I was offered the opportunity to come over to Saudi Arabia with his great horse Tacitus for the Saudi Cup. It was a bit daunting at first coming over to ride a horse I’d never sat on before. Who is entered along side some of the best horses in the world. But I have been riding horses since I was 7 years old and working in racing for 12 years in England. I felt I was more than capable to take on the challenge ahead. I have ridden other group-winning horses in the past, most notably Arabian Queen, who won the 2015 Juddmonte International at York races in the UK. I have experienced a very warm welcome here in Saudi Arabia. The people here in Saudi have been so friendly, welcoming, supportive and really hospitable to me. I have definitely enjoyed my time here and would love to come back in the near future.

Q+A | Laura Gardn er Tell us about yourself...(who what where) My name is Laura Gardner. I’m 29. I was born in London England. When did you start riding? I started having riding lessons when I was 7 years old. Before my parents brought me my own pony so I could ride everyday, Instead of just once a week.I started off showing, then went onto showjumping What discipline did you gravitate towards? Have you always had an interest in racing? I became interested in racing because I used to watch it on the tv at weekends growing up just because I loved horses. I loved jump racing the most and always wanted to be the first woman to win the grand national! So after I did my a levels at college. I went straight into racing aged 17. How long have you been in the racing industry? I’ve worked in racing 12 years now.

Two Firsts: Laura, the first to ride on the track and Princess Sheeneeda, the first woman in Saudi to breed and own Thoroughbred racehorses. There are other women as well that are breeding and changing the climate as equestrians in not only racing but show jumping as well. Shown below with Will Phipps, former Bill Mott assistant trainer traveling with Tacitus.

I’ve seen Tacitus race, how did this opportunity for you to ride him come about? The opportunity to ride Tacitus came about working for Bill Mott. I was craving a change from England and wanting to escape the winter weather so I decided upon a trip to Florida. It was there I started working at Bill’s and it all went from there! Tell us about Tacitus Tacitus is actually a great ride and gives you an amazing feel on the gallops. He floats so effortlessly in his work. He is a true professional in every way. And he handled the trip over with ease. Was riding on foreign soil, like Saudi, always a goal? Tell us the protocol you had to go through to make this happen. I could never have imagined I’d ever ride in Saudi Arabia. It wouldn’t be something I would have done before the Saudi cup races where introduced. I had been to Dubai just on holidays and as a spectator at the Dubai World Cup. Of course it has always been a goal to take a horse abroad somewhere like this for a big racing occasion I just never imagined it would actually happen. When the Motts asked me if I would like to go I jumped at the opportunity. It was a once in a lifetime event and to be asked was a real privilege. So I applied for my visa and Saudi Cup arranged the rest, it was as easy as that. Can we look forward to seeing more of you here in the states now that you are working with the Motts? My visa for US has expired but I hope to renew my visa and return soon and continue working with the Motts. Your achievement is inspiring, if you could share any wisdom with others what would it be? Never give up, keep trying no matter what. You never no what opportunities lie around the corner. Jump in at the deep end, be confident and work hard. You will fulfill your dreams, and even more you didn’t expect to! It has been an unforgettable experience coming to Saudi Arabia and being the first woman to ride on the track. It is a once in a lifetime opportunity and it means so much to me. I hope it will also inspire other women too, in horseracing, other sports and life in general. I have experienced a very warm welcome here in Saudi Arabia. The people here in Saudi have been so friendly, welcoming, supportive and really hospitable to me. I have definitely enjoyed my time here and would love to come back in the near future.

It’s all in the details

and this polo barn in Florida is picture perfect. In Wellington, the equestrian world is thriving. Here is a world-class facility with top-of-the-line amenities and expansive space to grow into. The developed portion of the property is just over 5 acres with another 50 acres for practice polo fields and potential add-on buildings. The Decorators Unlimited, a luxury interior design firm based out of South Florida, worked hand-in-hand with the architect Annie Carruthers and Jack Carruthers of the established In-Site Design Group and the builder J5 Construction, to create the overall project vision for the client. In keeping with the client’s vision, a majority of the selections, both inside and out; from paver and brick finishes to the final towel rod and robe hook were made by the team at Decorators Unlimited.

Not all projects flow easily however, they faced a challenging time constraint, which was a large undertaking. The property needed to be ready for polo season and the horse’s arrival. Luckily, the team was able to coordinate the moving parts seamlessly through overseas client communication insuring scheduled selections and reliable expertise on their part. In the end, the finished project turned out better than anyone imagined.

Equestrian Facility Breakdown

There are 64 stalls on the property with Classic Equine doors. Twelve paddocks for outdoor grazing, two polo fields for stick and ball and one large arena. And that’s just the developed portion.

Inside the barn are 4 tack rooms and 4 large storage/laundry/feed rooms, 2 wash stalls are located on the outside perimeter of the stables. The barn area also has a staff building, which sleeps 16 and a Patron Players Common Building, which also has 2 administrative offices. At the center is a large Asado area with an outdoor kitchen for grilling and entertaining. This is just one of four tack rooms in the barn. The tack room flooring is an 8â€? porcelain tobacco wood plank for easier cleaning and less maintenance. This spectacular room features bridle racks on one side, saddle racks and mallet storage on the opposing wall.

Iceland promises a warm welcome

if you love a good horseback riding adventure. Just ask Deborah Rusden of Palm City, Florida, who calls her globe-tölting adventure in June to Reykjavik through Active Riding Travel the “absolutely perfect trip for all riding abilities.” The six-day adventure began directly from the airport in Keflavik. “We went to the Blue Lagoon to soak and enjoy a highlyrecommended in-water massage in the therapeutic lagoon,” Rusden said. The Blue Lagoon is a geothermal spa, located in a lava field near Grindavík on the Reykjanes Peninsula in southwest Iceland, whose volcanic landscape and geothermal seawater offer an otherworldly experience while nourishing a traveler’s mind, body and spirit.

“I love the place, its people, horses, and food. The land – its geysers, hot springs and rock formations – is fascinating. It feels like you’re on another planet.”

“We spent two days in Reykjavik sightseeing, then four, six-hour days on horseback,” she said. All that riding could build an appetite, too. “My favorite meal in Iceland is always a cod, monk or wolf fish. I also love a Gull or Einstok beer.” The overnight accommodations for riders was at Hotel Eldhestar, in Suðurlandsvegur, the first lodging in Iceland to be awarded the Nordic Swan Ecolabel award for its design in accordance with modern ecological guidelines. It is also dedicated to Iceland’s “most useful servant for centuries, the Icelandic horse.” In addition to riding tours, the hotel’s walls feature historic reminders of how important its native “volcano horses” have been through the ages. “All of the horses were great,” Deb said of the riding adventure. “We could change to a different horse after lunch.” There were three levels of mount to choose from. “We had a choice of a Friday (very forward,

experienced rider), Saturday (forward, but easier to control) or Sunday horse (mellow, not too forward). “Riding the Tölt was a-mazing! Just sit back, lift the reins slightly and go! We did a Flying Pace on the beach.” Her favorite horse, Sallee, was a Saturday-style. “She was perfect. Forward but responsive, and easy to work into all her gaits.” It was easy to work Icelandic guides into telling a story, too. “(Our guide) told us, as a little boy, how the wind was so strong one day that he was blown into a crevasse! The next day (he was rescued of course), his grandfather gave him some coins he’d collected over the years and told him, ‘Put these in your pockets and you will never get blown away again.” Discover Iceland by horseback. It really will blow you away.

THE ICELANDIC TÖLT AND PACE

The Tölt is a natural four-beat gait where at least one hoof always touches the ground, producing a nearly bounceless ride at upwards of 20 mph (32 kmh). The Flying Pace (“the crown of Icelandic horsemanship”) is equal (30 mph/48 kmh) to a gallop, where both legs on the same side simultaneously touch the ground between intervals of midair suspension.

Keep in Mind:

Some cities have traditions that are totally different from what you and I are accustomed to, and one such city is Dubai, a fun and energetic city known to be one of the most permissive and easy-going places in the Middle East. But while the city exudes an aura very similar to many upbeat urban centers like it around the world, it would be wise to know that it can also be very different from them in so many ways. This beautiful city has its own cultural dos and don’ts that one should adhere to in order to prevent misunderstandings with its locals and authorities. Image credit EMIRATES
