Point of View

Someone from the Gyna Colleges called. They said the Pabst Beer Joining Probus Could Improve Your Health ! is normal! I didn’t even know you liked Beer! Are you semi retired or retired, perhaps at a loose end and wondering what to do with that new found freedom after years of working for a living? Why not join the Probus Club of Wasaga Beach (Men's). Probus Clubs are organizations for men and women who are retired or semi- retired and want to maintain a social network with others in a similar situation. They are not service clubs, are non sectarian, non political and not involved in fundraising. Started in 1965 in the United Kingdom, Probus now has over 5,000 clubs worldwide including Canada where the first club was formed in Cambridge in 1987.There are now over 23,000 Probus Club members throughout Canada. The Probus Club of Wasaga Beach (Men's) was formed in 1995 and now has 125 members from varied backgrounds. Joining a club such as the Men's Probus Club will provide you with the opportunity to get to know the community, to socialize, to hear about some interesting topics and to enjoy a variety of social events while not making demands on your time which belonging to a service club often requires. Best of all club membership could add years to your life!! Recent research has shown that a network of good friends is a contributor to longevity in older people – now isn't that a great club benefit!! The Probus Club of Wasaga Beach (Men's) meets every second Thursday of each month at the Wasaga Stars Arena on River Road West. The meetings start at 10 a.m. with a brief business session followed by coffee. After coffee there is a guest speaker on a broad range of topics. Recent topics have included, Elder Abuse, The Health Effects of Computers, The Work of the National Ski Academy, The Role of the Canadian Military Police in Iraq and Afghanistan, and Gangs and Guns in the Canadian Correctional System. Upcoming topics include the War of 1812, A Perspective on the NHL, Preventing Falls in the Elderly and many more. The annual membership fee is $30. Regular attendance is not mandatory and although members are encouraged to become involved in all aspects of the operation of the Club, there is no obligation to do so. Aside from monthly meetings, there are opportunities throughout the year for members, friends and family to attend social events which cater to all tastes. Some of the recent events include trips to the theatre at Kings Wharf in Penetanguishene, The Hamilton Military Tattoo, a boat cruise and a golf tournament. Upcoming Social events include; Curling and Lunch at Stayner Curling Club, A Mystery Dinner Theatre at Wasaga Sands Golf Course (in conjunction with Sunbirds Probus Club) and Christmas Lunch & Entertainment at Marlwood Golf Club.

PUBLIC CONSULTATION FOR POTENTIAL GAMING FACILITY IN WASAGA BEACH – WE WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU In late May of this year, the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced their intention to expand private sector gaming in Ontario by issuing a Request for Information (RFI) seeking input from potential providers as it expands regulated private-sector gaming in Ontario. Wasaga Beach has been identified in Zone C7 along with the Town of Collingwood, Clearview Township and the Township of Springwater. The OLG has indicated that each identified zone will only support one gaming facility and will ensure any new gaming facilities are not in close proximity to an existing gaming operation. The Town of Wasaga Beach is seeking input of residents and business owners on whether or not it should support the OLG possibly locating a gaming facility in Wasaga Beach. Comments may be directed to the Office of the CAO by e-mail to olgcomments@wasagabeach.com or by written letter to 30 Lewis Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario L9Z 1A1, to the attention of the Office of CAO. To complete an online opinion survey and learn more about the potential opportunity, please visit www.wasagabeach.com. PUBLIC INFORMATION MEETINGS: The municipal Councils in Zone C7 have agreed to host a joint Public Information meeting on Tuesday, October 16th at the RecPlex in Wasaga Beach located at 1724 Mosley Street at 7:00 p.m. OLG officials will be in attendance to provide information on the proposed gaming facility opportunity for Zone C7 to Members of Council and the public. Due to the nature of the meeting, OLG representatives will only be taking questions from members of Council. Any questions from the public are required to be provided to members of Council from the respective municipalities so that they can be posed to the OLG representatives at the meeting. In addition to the joint Public Information meeting, the Town of Wasaga Beach will be holding a Public Information meeting for members of the community from Wasaga Beach only on Wednesday, October 24th at the RecPlex in Wasaga Beach located at 1724 Mosley Street at 7:00 p.m. OLG officials will be in attendance to provide information on the proposed gaming facility opportunity to Members of Council and the public. Due to the nature of the meeting, OLG representatives will only be taking questions from members of Council. If you would like to submit a question prior to the meeting, please email olgcomments@wasagabeach.com or by hard copy to 30 Lewis Street, Wasaga Beach, Ontario L9Z 1A1, to the attention of the Office of CAO. beach BOOSTER Page 3

beach BOOSTER Tip #1001 Never, under any circumstances, take a sleeping pill and a laxative on the same night. Best Divorce Letter Ever Dear Wife, I’m writing you this letter to tell you that I’m leaving you forever. I’ve been a good man to you for 7 years and I have nothing to show for it. These last 2 weeks have been hell. ... Your boss in Barrie called to tell me that you quit your job today and that was the last straw. Last week, you came home and didn’t even notice I had a new haircut, had cooked your favorite meal and even wore a brand new pair of silk boxers. You ate in 2 minutes and went straight to sleep after watching all of your soaps. You don’t tell me you love me anymore; you don’t want sex or anything that connects us as husband and wife. Either you’re cheating on me or you don’t love me anymore; whatever the case, I’m gone.

Your EX-Husband P.S. don’t try to find me. Your SISTER and I are moving away from Wasaga Beach to Calgary together! Have a great life! Dear Ex-Husband Nothing has made my day more than receiving your letter. It’s true you and I have been married for 7 years, although a good man is a far cry from what you’ve been. I watch my soaps so much because they drown out your constant whining and griping Too bad that doesn’t work. I DID notice when you got a hair cut last week, but the 1st thing that came to mind was ‘You look just like a girl!’ Since my mother raised me not to say anything if you can’t say something nice, I didn’t comment. And when you cooked my favorite meal, you must have gotten me confused with MY SISTER, because I stopped eating pork 7 years ago. About those new silk boxers: I turned away from you because the $49.99 price tag was still on them and I prayed it was a coincidence that my sister had just borrowed $50 from me that morning. After all of this, I still loved you and felt we could work it out. So when I hit the Lotto Max for 10 million dollars, I quit my job and bought us 2 tickets to Jamaica But when I got home you were gone.. Everything happens for a reason, I guess. I hope you have the fulfilling life you always wanted. My lawyer said that the letter you wrote ensures you won’t get a dime from me. So take care.

Signed, Your Ex-Wife, Rich As Hell & Free! P.S. I don’t know if I ever told you this, but my sister Carla was born Carl. I hope that’s not a problem.

Changing Wasaga Beach Lives Gary Cerantola; gary@beachbooster.com

Our Wasaga Beach Festival starts with a Dream Think Sundance Film Festival North! It’s a pretty simple vision for our film festival dreams with tremendous upside for our local economy while contributing to arts and culture in our community. What do we need to get there? Engaged community leaders, motivated local businesses and committed volunteers is the only way we can keep growing our film festival dream. Here’s an example. Sudbury Ontario. What does Sudbury have to do with film? Cinéfest Sudbury International Film Festival was established in 1989 and despite some early skepticism, Sudburians quickly proved that a mining-oriented community could be receptive to repertory film culture as cinema-buffs crowded theatres during the inaugural three-day event. Each year since, the Festival has continued to mature and expand. By 1993, Cinéfest Sudbury evolved into a full-service film organization, with the Festival growing to include upwards of 60 films over 5 days. Currently screening approximately 135 films, including full-length features, shorts, documentaries and animation, Cinéfest Sudbury provides cinephiles with firstclass film works and industry discourse each September of every year. Guess what? They don’t have the world’s longest fresh water beach in their backyard. They don’t have the Blue Mountains nearby. In a sense it’s easy to build from what we have from a natural advantage point of view. Did I mention we are only 90 minutes from Canada’s most prosperous, progressive and growing population centre? Our film festival concept is unique. It is grassroots; so we can promote and develop talent, the content is original and the theme supports business and community while attracting visitors and new residents. For all you Wasaga Beach business owners out there the Wasaga Beach Short Film festival is one of the most powerful ways to advertise your business for free. There’s two weeks left to the film submission deadline of October 15, 2012. This is what you can do….. You make your 30 second video advertisement. You enter it in the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival by October 15, 2012 for FREE under the Video Advertisement Category. Once you qualify, the WBSFF loads it onto its You Tube Channel (forever). The WBSFF then loads it on their website for one whole year. It gets better…..Wasaga Beach residents come to the view it January 26, 2013 for a view and vote. You get more local exposure. If you happen to win the category....EXTRA bonus!!! You get more publicity......How can you not do this for so much exposure and it's FREE to enter? In the meantime you are adding to the WBSFF submissions and make it more successful! Everybody WINS! Beach Booster is certainly here to help. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com

They Were Built on Georgian Bay Georgian Bay’s shipbuilding ports became famous during the 20th century for the many Great Lakes vessels that they sent down the ways – steamers, freighters, barges, cement carriers, sand-suckers, oil tankers, and corvettes. But there were the other boats they built, boats that even today still carry thousands of happy passengers. On the west side of Georgian Bay at Owen Sound was the Russel Brothers. Among the many steel vessels that came out of the Russel factory were small steamers designed to be used as tourist boats at the base of the cascading Niagara Falls. The various Maids of the Mist followed a long tradition of sightseeing boats that braved the turbulent waters of the Niagara River. For decades, Russel Brothers’ tough boats carried rain-coated passengers to the foot of the falls. And once, a Russel Brothers steamer rescued one of the few people to ever go over the falls and live. Less famous are two tour boats built in Collingwood in the early 1970s. They were named the Harvey H. Simpson and the Gladys M. Simpson. Constructed as “Amsterdam Style” sightseeing vessels for use at the port of Toronto, the first of them came off the slips in Collingwood in May, 1971. Originally 67 feet long, the Harvey H. Simpson seated 100 passengers as it sailed on one hour cruises through the scenic lagoons and channels of the Toronto Islands. The Harvey M. was joined in June, 1971 by the Gladys M. Simpson, for years one of the more popular tour boats in the waters of Lake Ontario.

Tales of our Neighbours and Friends

by Joe Bickerstaff Mrs. Dyce (known by all as Ma Dyce) built and developed the Dyconia Villa as a Summer only lodge in 1923. The main building consisted of a lobby and rooms equipped with sinks, with common washroom facilities down the hall. In 1946, the main dining room was built as a separate building and that Dyconia Villa - 1947 allowed for more rooms to be built on its second level. A local legend, Huck Laidlaw was the builder of this new building at the Dyc. In 1952, the property was purchased by Mr. and Mrs. Jack Hutchinson and extensive renovations and additions began to take place. In the Spring of 1963, there was a Grand Opening celebration to introduce a fully operational, year round hotel with two licensed bars, dining room, entertainment and modern accommodations! That year Wasaga Beach’s first swimming pool opened at the Dyconia. It boasted a size of 22’ x 60’ with 12 inch thick walls and was built at a staggering cost of $5,500.00! The pool attracted guests from all over and was a real hot spot, with local and not so local celebrities stopping by. Members of Ronnie Hawkin’s band often joined the hotel’s band to perform. Daytime pool side entertainment promoted great night time shows in the hotel’s Undertow Lounge. The adjacent property to the Dyconia contained the well known Villa Bar. This snack bar and restaurant was originally opened and operated by Jack Dyce and later leased to Gene Langevin, who ran the Villa Bar for several years. Gene later went on to be a very successful local real estate broker and Reeve of Wasaga Beach! The Villa Bar and property eventually was acquired by John Hutchinson of the Dyconia, and much needed parking space was provided with the demolition of the structure. More up to date rooms, cabins and mini condo units were added in the late 1970’s making the Dyconia a truly modern year round resort! In 1977 Hollywood came to Wasaga Beach with the filming of the feature film Equus, starring Richard Burton. Many of the cast and crew stayed at the Dyconia Resort including director Sidney Lumet and actress Joan Plowright. In recent years, the lounge of the Dyconia Resort was still the place to stop by and meet friends… and you could always catch up on all the local news of Wasaga Beach! The Dyc’s Dining Room (The Dinner Bell Lounge) continued to be the best in the area, famous for the fine dining, including seafood dishes and the best of Prime Rib of Beef served with Yorkshire Pudding. In 2008, The Dyconia Resort Hotel was sold and continues to offer accommodation.

With the opportunity to have a coffee with Wasaga Beach resident Ron Ego, comes the chance to hear a lot of great stories! Ron can tell tales of years gone by… and also some interesting thoughts about current events in The Beach. Ron’s love of the game of hockey is clear as he tells of his years in High School when he refereed Girls and Intramural hockey games and in later years worked with the Toronto Hockey League, the Ontario Hockey League (O.H.A) and then at the age of 23, was with Ron Ego the NHL for five years. Ron’s original contract with the league earned him all of $4,500.00 annually! After failed negotiations with the NHL and as the newly formed W.H.A. was eager to have Ron as part of their league, Ron joined the World Hockey Association. The new league offered to double his NHL salary with a guarantee of 3 years and a $5,000.00 annual increase each of those years making this a great opportunity! Ron later went on to start Ego Trophies and Awards and ran this very successful business for about 20 years. Loyal customers like The Toronto Blue Jays, The Toronto Argonauts and Labatt Brewery were always seeking Ron’s custom awards and trophies. Ron was also very involved with the Brampton Golf and Country club where he was on the Board of Directors and involved in many tournaments and events for over 30 years. In 1991, after a 20 year absence from pro hockey, the NHL approached Ron to train and develop officials for the league. Ron accepted this position and also acted as a liaison between coaches, team owners and the league until 2004. Over the years, while Ron was keeping busy travelling as a pro referee, he and his wife Faye always made time for the family to enjoy spending time every summer at Wasaga Beach. Starting back in the early ‘70s the Egos and several other very good friends would rent 3 beachfront cottages at the Ponderosa Snack Bar and Store, located at what is now River Road East and Eastdale. (Allenwood Beach) Years later it was decided the family would gather for a vacation in Wasaga Beach after Ron’s daughter’s wedding in 1999. Ron and Faye looked for a place to rent and then found a beachfront cottage, just steps away from the old Ponderosa cottages. During that family holiday, Ron was approached by the owner of the cottage and given the opportunity to purchase the property. The deal was done… and Ron, Faye and family now owned a place at their favourite beach… Wasaga Beach! In 2006 Ron and Faye move full time to Wasaga Beach and are well known and active in our community. Joe Bickerstaff
