On May 15th Learn 13 Ways to Kill Your Community

The Mayors of Clearview Township, the Township of Springwater, and the Town of Wasaga Beach are pleased to invite residents from all three communities to attend an engaging evening with Doug Griffiths, national bestselling author of 13 Ways to Kill Your Community. According to Griffiths, “I help communities identify what is holding them back from finding success, and then I help them overcome it. When they aren’t looking I inspire, and often shock them, with a presentation showing how they are destroying their own chance at success. Then I help build them back up and get them on a better path.” Griffiths further states that, “success is all about attitude. For too long we have watched our communities weaken and wither and wondered when somebody is going to fix them.

Guess what? You are somebody. Now go out and fight the attitudes that sabotage success. Our communities are worth fighting for . . . and remember – you are not alone. You will face criticism and negativity, but our advice is to simply smile and remind the critics that, those who say it cannot be done, should not interrupt those who are doing it.” Come and learn practical and insightful lessons that can help all three of our communities prosper. According to Mayor Brian Smith, “the best way to help position our communities for success is to understand what is holding other places back ARTIST’S IMPRESSION OF MAIN STREET IN WINTER and try and avoid the same pitfalls. There are very relevant lessons in Mr. Griffiths’ work for all of us as we work to improve our communities.”

Historic Main Street and our World Famous Main Beach Prepare for Summer of 2017! The kiosks have been unwrapped and operators have been preparing them for another busy Summer Season for “The Main Street Market” on Historic Main Street. There are several new offerings this year to add to the great variety of unique and local treats served at the many colourful retro trailer like kiosks. New this year is the “Candy Shack”, providing our Historic Main Street with the smells and tastes so many will remember from yesteryear, with its offerings of “Carnival Eats” including Candy Floss, Pop Corn, Candy Apples and more! The Wasaga Beach Brewing Company has been working hard on some cool changes to the “Beach Bar” on Historic Main Street. New signage, thatched roof and more add to the beach vibe of this welcoming patio and bar. To compliment the unique kiosks lining the street as part of the Main Street Market, there is a new opportunity for businesses and services to be a part of the fun, with retro-themed “store-fronts” being added to Main Street and Beach Drive. These new and unique structures are created using shipping containers mounted on pads and decorated with colourful and distinctive facades. This fun and colourful theme is to be continued along the beach front at our Main Beach areas to brighten up all the structures along Beach Drive. Most of the structures along Beach Drive are being painted in the coming weeks to show a fresh and colourful face for the important Victoria Day Weekend. Beach and Sunset themed murals are planned for the outside of some the buildings that will WOW our residents and visitors. Sharing the beach life fun will be easier for those who enjoy posting pictures as several unique and locally themed “Cartoon Cut-Out” photo boards will be placed throughout the Main Beach area. Beach goers will pose for photos, with their faces exposed in various “historical” poses, including The War of 1812 and scenes from the 20s and 50s. Note: For leasing information on the new commercial structures, contact Nick Vidinovski at 705-718-0477

Street Sweeping Now that Spring weather is here, the Town of Wasaga Beach started the clean up from the winter on April 3rd. Street sweeping will take 6 to 8 weeks to do all the streets in town. Main roads will be first. The town is asking that you help by not piling sand on the roadway. The sweeper can't pick up piles of sand so the town says it's best left on the side of the road.

Our renovation is complete and we will be open at the new office 1535 Mosley St. (corner of Mosley and Sunnidale) Tuesday, May 9th. We look forward to serving the Wasaga Beach community at our new location.

Wasaga Beach Celebrates Our Youth

The town of Wasaga Beach “Celebrate Youth Outstanding Youth Awards” took place during the National Youth Week on May 5th at the Wasaga Beach RecPlex. This marks the third year for this event recognizing the work and contribution of a young person who has demonstrated outstanding commitment and dedication to their community and an inspiration to their fellow youth. Over the years, the committee has strived to add new motivational speakers, new award criteria and new music. “We are constantly looking to make the night more fun for the youth while showing them they can be empowered to do great things and be the leaders of tomorrow,” said Khaleel Gandhi, Committee Member. This year the event kicked-off early with plans of bringing new components to the award gala such as consolidating the youth awards. “We really narrowed the field a little bit to ensure that everyone has a chance to be up for this award and it’s going to be a cool event”. In the past, four awards were allocated. The third year celebration will embrace only two awards: Junior Youth in grades 6 to 8 and a Senior Youth in grades 9 to 12 whom must be a resident of Wasaga Beach. “We found that some categories had all the nominations while others had none. This year, we want to ensure everyone who is nominated has a fair chance of receiving an award.” The voting system consisted of incorporating a public vote along with a percentage of the vote from the committee members. A short bio video from the nominees the night of the awards was followed by two voting periods: one from the junior award nominee and one from the senior award nominee. “We then tabulate all the votes and will announce the two winners at the end of the night.” The committee recognizes youth that have made a positive difference in the community through their school, church group or volunteer organization. “How they inspire their peers to make a positive difference, how can they act as a role model and how they use their creativity and innovation to give back to the community and help improve Wasaga Beach,” said Khaleel. The event featured performances by The Leynes Brothers and QCT Battle of the Bands Competition winner, Bad Habit aka Crowfoot. The Youth Awards will encompass the entire RecPlex Halls with welcoming community booths showcasing businesses in town along with outreach and youth programs offered by the town. TIPPING POINT Changing Wasaga Beach Lives

GARY CERANTOLA gary@beachBOOSTER.com

Research Says: As We Get Older We Get Happier Contrary to popular beliefs about grumpy old men and women, research shows that people grow happier as they get older. Although physical quality of life goes down after middle age, mental satisfaction increases. A study of more than 10,000 people in the United States and Britain adds support to a report that happiness levels form a U-curve, hitting their low point at around 45, then rising. One research study summary that I came across looked at lifestyle and health patterns and their links to mental and physical quality of life and health status. Quality of life was evaluated using eight factors including perception of general health, pain, social functioning and mental health. This study found that people reported better mental quality of life as they aged, despite a decrease in their physical abilities. Given our town’s demographics, we should have a very happy population overall, since 40 percent of our population is over 60 years old. So, let’s work with that and the next time you see someone complaining about something that makes them unhappy, remind them of the reported statistic and tell them not to mind because things are sure to get better as they get older. I keep reminding myself that I live in the best country in the whole world and that I am blessed to have such a great quality of life while millions around the world are displaced, or experiencing war, famine, oppression, etc. The news these days is full of reports of strife all over the world. We, in Canada, have the life most people in the world dream of having. So, let’s not sweat the small stuff and stop letting those little things irritate us and remember how fortunate we are. We live in a great country and a very nice town. Our town may have a few growing pains but in the scheme of things, we have a great quality of life in Wasaga Beach. Given a few moments dedicated to reflection each day and being grateful for everything we have, how can we not be happy? “Be The Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, learn, work and play. Gary is a YB12 Coach and Business Advisor for Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, and lives, learns, works and plays in Wasaga Beach.

Expert answers to your health and welliness questions Question: Is it beneficial to get my body fat percentage checked and, if so, what method provides the best result? Answer: Whether or not you get your body fat checked depends on how meticulous you are when it comes to your own health and wellness. Some people are perfectly content to just workout and watch what happens. Others want to track and analyze everything and, as a result, like to have a starting point for body fat, amongst other things. If you’re in this latter group, then go ahead and get a test done. There are numerous ways to analyze your body fat percentage, from the very expensive to the ridiculously inexpensive, and the very accurate to the incredibly inaccurate. Some of the best methods include getting a DEXA scan, a Bod Pod measurement, or getting underwater weighed. However, these are the more expensive options, and require sophisticated equipment and skilled technicians. You could also try stepping on a Tanita scale, which uses something called bioelectrical impedance to determine your body fat percentage. Unfortunately, the accuracy is somewhat questionable with this method. When it comes to cost, accuracy, and practicality, you really can’t go wrong with a skinfold caliper test. It takes about 5 minutes, it might cost you $10-$50 (depending on whether a consult is included or not), and it’s reasonably accurate. You just need to find a personal trainer, or other health professional, that has done hundreds or even thousands of tests. And remember, the initial number isn’t necessarily all that important anyway. You just need a starting point—then, as long as that number trends down over time, that’s all that really matters, right? Question: Being of college age, I’m curious about the latest guidelines when it comes to alcohol intake. Can you help me out with benefits (if there are some) and risks? Answer: Absolutely! If you decide to consume alcohol (and I assume you have since you’re asking the question), the current recommendations would be no more than 2 drinks per day for men and 1 drink per day for women. This is defined as “moderate consumption,” though this certainly isn’t the norm for college-aged folks. As you’re probably aware, excessive alcohol intake can lead to a whole heap of problems including alcoholism, high blood pressure, elevated triglycerides (blood fats), obesity, stroke, heart failure, and even some cancers. But here’s the good news. Moderate alcohol consumption does have its health benefits as well, though this list isn’t nearly as long. The potential benefits include a slight increase in HDL (good cholesterol) and some anti-clotting properties as well, which may have an effect on heart attack and stroke risk. In fact, several studies have linked alcohol to reduced mortality from heart disease, though we can’t be sure that other lifestyle factors weren’t the primary cause. Bottom line—only you can decide how much of a role alcohol plays in your life. Just be responsible, drink moderately (if at all), and don’t drink and drive!

Wasaga Beach Speedway 1/4 Mile Paved Oval With the racing season underway, let’s have a look back at our own local Stock Car track here in The Beach. Wasaga Beach Speedway always provided an exciting evening of entertainment with regular Stock Car racing and the metal bending fun of a Demolition Derby. If I remember correctly, through the summer months there would be racing both Wednesday and Saturday evenings at our very own Wasaga Beach Stock Car track. With the popularity of our Speedway along with fun, entertainment and of course the World’s Longest Freshwater Beach… Wasaga Beach was known as Canada’s Daytona!

Our local track opened in 1956 and closed about 1970. There was originally a half-mile horse track on the property. The paved track was built later, inside the old horse track. The remains of the paved stock car track is still there. It's not easy to notice from the ground, but is quite clear in this aerial photo. The pits were outside of the track, off turn 3 & 4 and the drivers entered the track from turn 4. There were grandstands along the front straight but these are long gone. In the mid 1960's drivers like Norm Lelliott, Doug Warnes, Ab Leach, Al Middlebrook and Tommy Cuzilla were regulars at the paved Wasaga Beach Speedway. Many of the Wasaga Beach regulars were also well known at Sutton (then called South Shore Speedway). The track started to die out in the late 1960's and at the end of the 1969 season it appeared that it would close. The Stapleton brothers (Harry and Jack) purchased the track and gave the speedway a reprieve for the 1970 season when they ran "B" Modifieds and 6 Cylinder Diamonds. It appears the track closed at the end of the 1970 season, but the property was occupied by the Wasaga Snowmobile Club for several years in the early 70s. The remains of Wasaga Beach Speedway are located in the Provincial Park and are accessible to th public. Look for the orange gate on the east side of Oxbow Park Road. Park your car on the side of the road and walk down the sandy lane. The track is only about 100 metres or so down the path.
