Not So Pro Volleyball Invaded Wasaga Beach JULY 4 to July 6

It was a great weekend July 4 to 6 for Not So Pro Volleyball Teams who took over a big portion of the Main Beach for their yearly Wasaga Beach competition. Over 800 players 112 teams, sunshine, social and a whole lot of beach volleyball! Teams were guaranteed 18 games. There were five Divisions Elite 4's, Competitive 4's, Advanced 4's, Intermediate 6's and Recreational 6's. The event drew large crowds and contributed to a busy time for our tourist businesses in town. This great action shot courtesy of Enrique Photo Art

Neighbours Helping Neighbours June 17, 2014, marked a day that residents of Angus and Essa Township won’t forget for a long, long time. The wrath of Mother Nature caused many to remember the year a tornado went through Barrie. That was May 31, 1985. The tornado this year caused devastation to many families in Angus. But in a time of need, Waterside Retirement Lodge stepped up to lend a hand. They opened their doors as a donation drop-off location for the Angus Emergency Relief Project. Community, family, residents and staff donated many items that in turn have been given to Angus. Waterside Retirement Lodge thanks everyone that supported the relief efforts for our neighbours in Angus and Essa Township.

June 26, 2014 Lions Clubs District Governor Chris Lewis presented a $10,000 Lions Clubs International Foundation cheque to the Angus Lions and Lioness today for their tornado relief efforts. Lion Chris toured the area with Deputy Mayor Sandie Macdonald and saw first hand the damage the tornado did, and although the cleanup is well underway, there are still great needs in the community. The Angus Lions and Lioness are currently dispersing food, toiletries, and cleaning supplies for those in need - in particular the many uninsured. Some funds raised by Wasaga Beach Lions Club through Bingo and other events go to support our neighbours in a time of need.

Point of View You probably already know that Canada’s national sport is lacrosse, not hockey. And that we’re home to the most northerly permanent settlement (Alert, Nunavut). But how about the fact that we built the world’s first UFO landing pad? Or that Iceland wanted to adopt the loonie? Here are 15 things that many Canadians don’t even know about their home and native land. 1. We made the world’s first $1-million coin

In 2007, the Royal Canadian Mint issued the world’s first million-dollar coin (it was also named the world’s largest gold coin by Guinness World Records). To date, five of these coins have been bought by investors. 2. We eat 55 percent more Kraft Dinner than Americans do

Yes, us northerners really love instant macaroni and cheese—which maybe isn’t so surprising given The Barenaked Ladies even referenced this dinner staple in their song, “If I Had a Million Dollars.” 3. We built the world’s first UFO landing pad

Summer in Wasaga Beach is the perfect time to gather family and friends around the BBQ and grill up some healthy food with big, bold flavours. The dishes featured here are full flavoured and a bit on the spicy side, but if you prefer a milder version simply eliminate the cayenne pepper.

St. Paul, Alberta, is home to the world’s first landing pad for alien life. The raised cement pad was built in 1967 and was officially opened by then Minister of National Defense (and open alien conspiracy Ingredients theorist) Paul Hellyer. 4. We never owned Alaska

2 salmon fillets, about 6 oz each

5. We almost shared currency with Iceland

½ tsp ground cumin

It’s a common misconception that Canada “sold” Alaska to the U.S. juice 1 lime 1/4 tsp chili powder Not true. USA bought the state from Russia in 1867. In the aftermath of the country’s economic collapse, Iceland’s ½ tsp smoked paprika government publicly considered adopting Canada’s currency and ½ tsp ground coriander speculation that Greenland would also consider taking on the loonie. pinch of soft brown sugar 6. We’re home to the waterfall capital of the world

drizzle of sunflower oil For the salsa 1 ripe avocado, peeled and diced About 12 cherry tomatoes, quartered 2 spring onions, sliced juice 1 lime 7. We harvest icebergs in Newfoundland and Labrador for vodka Ever seen Iceberg Vodka at your local liquor store? It’s the only vodka splash of olive oil in the world made from icebergs, which are harvested from Iceberg 1/2 bunch of Cilantro, chopped The region surrounding the steel town of Hamilton, Ontario, has more than 100 waterfalls, and is dubbed both “The City of Waterfalls” and “The Waterfall Capital of the World.” It may be a self-made claim, but it works for publicity: do a Google search for “waterfall capital” and top spots go to Hamilton.

Alley, off Newfoundland’s east coast, then processed in St. John’s. Ontario has a hand in there, too—the alcohol part is triple-distilled Method Put the salmon in a bowl, pour over the lime from Ontario sweet corn. 8. We’re the garter snake capital of the world

If you’re not scared to see tens of thousands of red-garter snakes in a mating frenzy, head to the Narcisse Snake Den in Manitoba. For two periods each year, visitors can see “more snakes at a glance than anywhere else in the world,” according to Manitoba’s website. 9. We’re the world’s largest exporter of lentils

Quick! Name our top exports! Wheat? Oil? Lumber? How about lentils? Yes, Canada exports more lentils than any other nation, producing 17 percent of the world’s supply and primarily exporting to India and Turkey. 10. We hold an annual bathtub race

Every July, you can watch—or take part in—the World Championship Bathtub Race in Nanaimo, British Columbia. The annual event started in 1967 and is run by a real organization known as the Loyal Nanaimo Bathtub Racing Society.

juice and leave the salmon to 'cure' for about 5 mins. Meanwhile, mix all the spices together with the sugar. Lift the salmon out of the lime juice and roll in the spices so it's completely coated. Heat grill to high. Grease a baking tray, then sit the salmon, presentation-side up, on the tray. Grill for 5 mins, until the salmon is cooked through and the edges are starting to blacken. While the salmon is cooking, gently mix all the salsa ingredients together with the roughly chopped coriander. When the fish is cooked, serve with the salsa, the black rice.

11. We have more doughnut shops per capita than anywhere else in Spicy Black Olive Rice 2 tablespoons olive oil the world

The doughnut may be commonly considered an American sweet, but it turns out we eat more of the deep-fried treat than anywhere else on the planet. Which maybe isn’t so surprising—how many Tim Hortons do you pass on your daily commute? 12. We supply a third of the world’s French fries

Thanks to the McCain empire, one-third of the world’s French fry supply comes from the small town of Florenceville-Bristol in New Brunswick. 13. We have the deepest underground physics lab in the world

The SNOLAB, located two kilometres underneath the city of Sudbury, is the deepest physics lab on earth. Work in the lab includes experiments about dark matter and research on supernovas. 14. Our tallest waterfall isn’t the Horseshoe

Niagara Falls may get all the glory, but the highest waterfall in Canada is actually in British Columbia’s Strathacona Provincial Park on Vancouver Island. Della Falls stands 440 metres, which is more than eight times the height of the Niagara Falls.

1 small onion 1 tsp chili powder 1 tsp salt 1 sprig of thyme, minced 1/2 tsp oregano 1 tsp ground cumin 1/4 tsp cayenne 2 garlic cloves, minced 1 small red bell pepper 1/2 cup black olives, pitted 2 tbsp Cilantro 1 cup Basmatti Rice 2 cups water 1 tsp salt

15. Wasaga Beach is the Home of The Longest Freshwater Beach in Cook the 1 cup of Basmatti rice in 2 cups of the World water with 1 tsp of salt for 12 minutes or until

Wasaga Beach is a town in Simcoe County, Ontario, Canada. Nestled along the longest freshwater beach in the world. It is a very popular summer tourist destination, situated at the southern end of Georgian Bay, approximately two hours north of Toronto. Wasaga Beach is situated along 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) of white sandy beach on Nottawasaga Bay and the winding Nottawasaga River.

In the Town of Wasaga Beach we are blessed with the longest fresh water beach in the world and the picturesque Nottawasaga River and many of us also have backyard swimming pools. All of these can be used to cool when the weather gets hot and humid. However any body of water whether large or small can be a dangerous place if we do not respect it. I would like to remind our residents and visitors to our communities to make water safety priority. Drowning deaths are preventable so please review and use the following water safety tips. 1)Regardless of the location, ensure children are supervised; whether at home or on vacation. Adult supervision is the best protection for children – even for those who can swim. 2)Whether at home at the pool or on vacation at the beach, insist that all inexperienced swimmers both youth and adults wear approved life jackets. 3)Ensure that your backyard pool is fully fenced with a self-closing, self-latching gate. 4)When not using your home pool, clear all toys out of the water and away from the edge. These can often tempt children to the water's edge to play. 5)Ensure you have emergency equipment including a first aid kit and a phone in the immediate pool area. 6)When boating, ensure everyone in the boat has their lifejacket on and fastened. 7)Ensure your water craft has all necessary safety equipment on board. 8)As an operator of a water craft, if towing anyone on skis or any type of towable device you must have a responsible person watching the person being towed. 9)Don't consume alcohol before or during swimming or boating activities. 10)Be cautious about swimming in currents, and know what to do if you get into trouble. 11)Get trained through swimming and water safety lessons; get your Pleasure Craft Operator Card if you operate a boat; know how to respond in an emergency by taking first aid lessons. Lifejacket safety checklist: 1)Is it Canadian-approved? 2)Will it support the person it was made for? 3)Are all the snaps, belts, ties, tapes and/or zippers on your lifejacket or PFD in good condition? 4)Is it easy to put on and take off? 5)Can you move your arms freely when wearing it? 6)Does it let you bend at the waist? 7)Can you see the ground at your feet and walk over obstacles easily? 8)Does it keep your head above water? 9)Relax in the water face down. Does your lifejacket roll you to a face-up position? 10)Can you swim and manoeuvre easily in the water? 11)Have you attached a whistle to your flotation device? Entertainment in The Beach! DaizyStripper and Rose Noire Captivate Fans at Anime North The sun was shining on Anime North 2014 the weekend of May 23rd with over 20,000 in attendance held at the Toronto Congress Centre. Anime North is known to showcase some of the finest cosplay you have ever seen. A popular costume this year was “Attack on Titan”. The event attracted popular Japanese rock bands: DaizyStripper and Rose Noire. DaizyStripper founded in 2007 made their way to the top of Japanese ORICON indie charts within two years including many sold out releases, shows and overseas activities in U.S., Europe and Canada. DaizyStripper: YU-GIRI, vocal, NAO, guitar, REI, bass and KAZAMI, drums/piano. This was their second appearance in Canada having performed at Otafest in Calgary two years ago. When asked what they liked most about Canada everyone stated how friendly and how they enjoy having a good time regardless of their region. The band's name DaizyStripper comes from “Daizy” relating to their childhood innocence young soul with “Stripper” more of an adult side. Having the opportunity to perform both in Canada and the US the band felt the Canadian fans were the loudest and most energetic. “We couldn't hear ourselves play that made us really happy,” said Kamazi. The band is still amazed with the attention from international people. Nao explains: “Although we speak different languages we can still understand each other through music there are some things that music can convey like an emotion that you can't really describe.” Yu-giri added “With limited English to get a message across to our fans, I think our music is good on CD but we really shine as a band when we perform live.” “I do believe that music is like rehab for the soul something that is healing. I would like to have a conversation with people through our music despite the language barrier,” said Rei. Having experienced their live performance I must admit their showmanship didn't disappoint their fans. New full-length album “TRAGUS” was released June 18th. Rose Noire is a brother and sister duo, Louie, vocal and Jill, violinist, who recently performed in Mexico and Otafest in Calgary. Formed in 2007 when they were students at the Tokyo National University of Fine Arts and Music. Classical musically inclined with the added variety of Rock, R&B genre etc. Rose Noire is a mysterious gothic/vampire mesmerizing band. Rose Noire is French for black rose. “The actual black rose doesn't exist. We want to represent our music as rare as the black rose and share it with everyone,” said Louie who spoke eloquently in English with a few words in French. Their latest MV “Alice” from Apocalypse – the Resurrection of Notes based on “Alice in Wonderland” movie, Jill conveyed the mood as Alice. “I got a lot antique trinkets and chose the costume,” said Jill. Louie's goal is to create a new genre of music and build international relationship. Thanks to J-Rock North Promotions, DaizyStripper, Rose Noire and shoutout to Saturn from CJLO Montreal. Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Cochair of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Beach Corner broadcast weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. on www.beachboosterradio.com

Wasaga Beach Toastmasters Achieve 15 Years of Service to the Local Community From the time of chartering as a fully-fledged Toastmasters Club, Sun & Sands Speakers Club, in June 1999, the club has been a wonderful tool to help individuals, of all walks of life, to attain the confidence to be better communicators and leaders, for the last 15 years. Since the opening, foundered by two toastmasters, namely, James Mckay and the late Art Betts, with the help of the growing membership, their help has been outstanding to the numerous visitors and new members. The club has been known to be one of the friendliest clubs which makes the learning easy without any pressure. The numerous members have come far and wide from England, Scotland, Hungary, Madagascar, The Caribbean Islands and Rhodesia, to name a few countries that give the real flavour to the club. The many speeches from every individual maintains the interest and excitement of being successful while enjoy it. The last meeting saw an Australia Toastmaster from Sydney, visiting Wasaga Beach, Roy Assanti, who gave a speech using Dean Martin's song, Memories are Made of This, whereby he used the song to bring about his happy and sad memories of his life. Everyone were impressed the manner he undertook the learnings of the Toastmaster's program to come out with a memorable speech. That same evening saw the induction of two new members, Susan Irvine, Wasaga Beach's Chamber of Commerce, President, and Joanne Smith, a local businesswoman, who is involved in other social organisations. Both have looked at Toastmasters to enhance the presentation skills for the betterment of their offices they both hold. We meet every 1st and 3rd Tuesday of the month at the Wasaga Beach Library at 7.00pm and welcome all who have the desire to be confident and show good leadership. Chicago over the July 4th weekend when guns are not allowed there? When a woman says "lol have fun." do NOT have fun. Abort mission. Repeat Abort Mission. Ever wonder when they will finish that road construction on your favourite route? Sorry the Chicago shootings was slightly wrong. It was 84 shot and 14 killed. That's some weekend. My Favorite thing about flamenco guitarists is how they can stand on one leg for the entire performance. Alone floating on a raft in the pool. Asked the neighbor to call my home phone and ask someone to bring me a drink. Work smarter not harder. Never forget the power of ONE. Because what kills us is not all the things we actually have to do. It's about THINKING of all we have to do. That collective weight. That disappears when you focus on ONE. The ONE thing you have to do now. Forget about the rest. It's irrelevant until after you finish the ONE. ONE brings along with it lightness. ONE brings along with it focus. ONE gets done. ˙sʞɔnq 5 ɹoɟ ʎɐqǝ ɯoɹɟ pɹɐoqʎǝʞ ɐ ʎnq ɹǝʌǝu

We can’t help notice a seismic shift in municipal politics occurred in Alberta the fall of 2013. After the municipal elections in Calgary and Edmonton last year I heard comments from friends and family in Alberta like “I haven’t been this excited for the future in a long time”, “an election I finally got excited about” and “I haven’t felt this optimistic in a long time.” What happened in that part of the country, a traditional bastion of conservatism, was that voters traded experienced politicians for new challengers with fresh ideas, with a willingness to challenge the status quo and an appetite to find new ways to do things. Municipal voter turnout increased in Alberta last year and new municipal politicians were voted in with landslide majorities. After all Beachers, the world has changed. We are in the age of citizen engagement and connection through social media. The use of social media has revolutionized political campaigning. Starting with Barack Obama’s use of Facebook and Twitter in his 2008 campaign, it has led to politicians like Justin Trudeau, Naheed Nenshi of Calgary and Don Iveson of Edmonton using social media like Facebook and Twitter to build very large followings. Young voters have grown up using these social networks and are hard wired to get engaged in social media which may ignite a whole new level of voters that are interested in getting directly involved and take responsibility in shaping their own future. Social media is fast becoming an effective tool to bridge the gap between politicians and citizens and if we adopt these tools we stand to gain a whole lot of ground in terms of truly realizing a shared vision about what our Wasaga Beach truly should be, the jewel in the South Georgian Bay crown. No longer can we afford making isolated decisions and pushing them through the municipal processes and disenfranchising a good majority of our citizens and businesses. It is time for a fresh approach, fresh ideas and new blood to reinvigorate our community. You will get a taste of the newer technologies when it comes to voting this fall in the municipal elections. There will be NO Paper Ballots and NO Polling Locations this election from October 17 until October 27 and it is up to you to find out if you are on the voters list. During the voting period there will be a Help Line and Help Centres set up, for those that require assistance with voting. The Help Line is at Town Hall, 705-4293844. You can check out the town website for details. This coming Wasaga Beach Municipal Elections 2014 should be very interesting times. “Be the Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachBOOSTER.com. William John Potts Ring names Billy Potts & “Whipper” Billy Watson 1915 - 1990 Canadian Wrestling hall of Fame member Whipper Billy Watson was a lifelong resident, and he spearheaded the campaign to build the Georgina Cultural Centre in the 1980's, which also houses the Stephen Leacock Theatre in Keswick. Watson was born in East York, Ontario to an English born father, John Potts and a Canadian born mother, Alice Mary Wilken. Watson began wrestling in Toronto under his real name. He was a member of the Scarborough Athletic Club in the mid-1930's and was wrestling on what were billed as a amateur wrestling shows in Toronto. Growing up as a teenager, Watson sold the Toronto Daily Star at the corner of Danforth and Dawes Road. He was convinced by this brother George to play hooky from piano lessons one Saturday to attend a wrestling session at the All Hallows Anglican Church gymnasium. The event changed Watson’s life. He furthered his wrestling training with Phillip Lawson at the Bowles Athletic Club and later the Central YMCA. in 1939, wrestling as Bill Potts, Watson appeared on cards at the British Consol Stadium in Toronto that were advertised as amateur wrestling shows. In June of that year, he went on a tour of the United Kingdom along with fellow Toronto wrestlers Tommy Nelson, Al Korman and Ken “Tiger” Tasker and their manager, Harry Joyce. The wrestling in England often involved hard-nosed fighting and he was sidelined for six months with a fractured shoulder and numerous broken ribs. It was on this tour that William Potts became Billy Watson. Booked by former Olympic Gold Medalist George de Relwyskow, Watson travelled through England and Ireland. He was one of the best wrestlers in the world.
