Georgian Bay Water Level Meeting Wasaga Beach May 30 Advertise your Garage or Yard Sale for FREE! email: info@beachbooster.com Don’t forget we publish every second Sunday so the deadline is Tuesday before the Sunday. Our next issue is May 19th. This offer is good for one time per household. The Ad will include date, address and timing. Any further information will require payment. (see Page 7)

There will be a meeting on the continuing concerns about Georgian Bay Water Levels in the Oakview Room at the RecPlex on May 30, 2013 at 7 p.m. Wasaga Beach Mayor Cal Patterson will Co-Chair the session. The guest speaker will be Roger Gauthier, retired senior hydrologist, US Army Corps of Engineers. Roger oversaw the St. Clair and Detroit Rivers for 30 years of his career. He will be speaking on the solution to the increased outflow from Lake Huron into the St. Clair River where the drain plug is slowly getting bigger as a result of dredging and sand and gravel mining. The US Army Corps believe they have authorization to proceed with placing submerged sills or speed bumps in the St. Clair River. Come and learn more right from Roger who is Chairman of Restore Our Water International. Then learn about the Great Lakes Section of Sierra Club's research with McMaster University to identify the cause of the deaths of hundreds of birds and fish that have been washing up on our beaches for the past two years. Mary Muter will also be at the meeting. Mary is Vice Chair, Restore Our Water International, Chair, Great Lakes Section, Sierra Club Ontario. www.restoreourwater.com All are welcome. Voluntary donations to Restore Our Water International and Sierra Club will be taken at the door.

St. Clair River Sills Concept ...The Solution?

St.Clair Sills are designed to sit on legs 3 feet off the bottom and leave the fish habitat undisturbed. In the unlikely event of a future high water crisis, they can be rotated 90 degrees to lie with the flow or be completely removed.

Wasaga Beach Offers Help to Neighbours Wednesday, April 24, 2013 7:23 AM this from Catherine Thompson of 97.7 the Beach

Equipment, personnel offered to Muskoka to help deal with flooding. Wasaga Beach's Mayor has offered help to Huntsville and Bracebridge. Cal Patterson says he's offered equipment and public works staff to help the cottage country communities dealing with extreme flooding. Patterson tells Bayshore Broadcasting News that the Mayor of Huntsville has told him they are okay for now, but will keep the offer in mind as the clean up continues. Bracebridge's mayor has so far only acknowledged the offer, but there's no word yet if the community will take Wasaga up on it. Editor’s Note: Good stuff Mr. Mayor, that’s what GOOD Neighbours Do!

The month of May has arrived and that always means an exciting buzz of activity in and around Wasaga Beach. Seasonal businesses seem to wake-up and come to life and our many year round establishments prepare for the busy summer season. Although Wasaga Beach encompasses many miles and we have all types of businesses spread throughout our town, the flurry of spring activity is most noticeable on our Main Street and Main Beach area as our community awaits the arrival of our valued summer visitors. Our Main Street and Main Beach have been welcoming tourists for over 100 years and should continue to be the hub of entertainment and business into the future. The beachfront bars and restaurants will again be preparing to open late May and there is hope that perhaps this year, they will be operated by community members who care to work with others, to help enhance the image of The Beach and welcome families back to the important Main Beach area. Beach BOOSTER is pleased to see a trend developing, bringing more and more family friendly businesses to this important area of commerce in town. Skull Island Adventure Golf again will offer a unique and exciting entertainment opportunity right on Main Street, close to our Main Street Bridge. Hours of family fun is promised at this great location. Just over the bridge, all will be amazed to see the new and colourful location of Sweet Tooth Candy Emporium that will welcome all to an inviting, family friendly atmosphere of fun and sweet delights. This new location will feature Original Yogen Fruz flavours and your kids can pick any candy or chocolate in the store and mix it into frozen yogurt or ice cream. Sweet Tooth also offers several types of coffee and hot chocolates, sweets from the UK, and candy from all over the world. A new patio offers a place to enjoy the treats and watch the action of our Main Beach area. Just up the road, Pedro's Gift Shoppe is a true Wasaga Beach landmark. This great location offers so much in one place and continues to welcome all with its huge supply of great clothing, Wasaga Beach souvenirs, and gifts for all occasions. Ice Cream and Mini-Golf are also available at this family friendly destination. Just around the corner from Pedro's , a brand new destination right on the beach at 3rd Street will soon be opening. This great new business will welcome all, young and old to try Stand Up Paddle Boards on our beautiful bay. Other water related activities will be available at this fun and colourful location brought to us by the same creative team who gave us the fantastic Skull Island on Main Street. These new and existing businesses will bring local and visiting families back to our Main Street and Main Beach areas, to enjoy the sun, fun and action that has made Wasaga Beach a great tourist destination for generations! Beach BOOSTER wishes everyone in The Beach a long, sunny and successful summer! The Beach is BACK! Joe Bickerstaff

With OPP P.C. Mark Kinney “Keeping the Community Safe & Reducing Crime through Information Sharing”

Protect your Property “Lock it or Lose it” Generally not a week goes by that someone does not report to the Huronia West OPP that their “unlocked” motor vehicle has been entered and property stolen. In many case only loose change is all that is stolen, but we have had GPS, lap tops and large sums of cash left in individuals' wallets in vehicles, stolen! Thefts from motor vehicles can be stopped. Time and time again it has been proven that this is a crime of opportunity. Below are several tips to help you from not becoming a victim: 1) Always roll up you vehicle's windows and lock the doors even when at home. Generally thieves will not break windows unless they see something worth stealing and possibly being heard. 2) Never leave valuables in your vehicle while unattended. You are just asking someone to break a window to get it. 3) If you must leave valuables in your vehicle hide them from sight. Cover it or if possible put it in your trunk. 4) Never leave your vehicle keys or a spare set of keys in your motor vehicle. 5) If you can park your vehicle in a locked garage and remember to also lock the vehicle and remove the keys. Store your vehicle keys away from your vehicle in some location you will know but others will not. 6) Never leave garage door openers visible in your vehicle, hide them. They can be used by criminals to gain access to your home. 7) Report suspicious activity, persons or vehicles to Police when you see them not the following day (1-888-310-1122). If a crime is currently being committed call “911” and report it. 8) Keep bushes and trees trimmed to reduce hiding places for individuals who may want to commit a crime (enter your unlocked vehicle). 9) If possible park you motor vehicle in a well-lit area. 10) Park your motor vehicle in an area where you can see it from inside your home. 11) If street lights are out call the municipality to have them fixed. A well-lit street increases safety makes it easier to see suspicious activity and deters crime. By not locking your motor vehicle while at home you are providing that opportunity to those who would steal from you. It may not happen tonight, or the next day but it will happen if you do not lock your motor vehicle. For more safety and crime prevention tips please visit the Ontario Provincial Police web site at: www.opp.ca. Remember to check out my next “On Duty” article in Beach Booster!

Chamber Celebrates 75th Anniversary

The Wasaga Beach Chamber of Commerce celebrates its 75th Anniversary this year. The first President was Earnett Hill from August 1938 to August 1939. Fifty Presidents later the Chamber of Commerce is stronger and continues to support local businesses in town. Trudie McCrae, Office Manager for the Chamber of Commerce, dropped by Beach Corner. Born in Orillia, Ontario and raised 7 miles west of the city. Trudie had a background working with large Insurance Companies. She has had the tremendous opportunity to live and work in three provinces across Canada. After returning from British Columbia she took up residency in Wasaga Beach and attended Georgian College of Applied Arts and Technology in Barrie where she obtained her diploma in Tourism Management. Trudie came to the Chamber of Commerce through a summer co-op placement and was hired fulltime after her convocation in May 2000. When Trudie moved to Wasaga Beach the population sign read 4,500 residents and today the population has grown to 18,000. She has seen many exciting changes in Wasaga Beach and enjoys working with the Business Community and Residents alike. Trudie recounts her love for this community. “I like the beach, it's a recreational area because the enthusiasm and excitement that is created by the summer visitors is a great place to live.” The Chamber of Commerce plays an important role to our community. According to Trudie: “The Chamber consists of people joining people to build a better community through sound business. It's a non-profit organization with business people, professionals and other community representatives working together to ensure a healthy economic base to benefit the entire community. The Chamber harnesses the tremendous potential of a private enterprise system and a community at large as a unified voice of business enabling its membership to accomplish directly what no one person can do individually.” Board meetings are held at the Chamber of Commerce boardroom the third Wednesday of every month where the executive portion of the meeting reviews the monthly finances as well as any issues as far as staffing or membership concerns. During the main board meeting each committee reports and updates the Chamber of their activities with the attendance of town representatives. Trudie indicated that the Chamber has evolved over the years from a membership based on tourism businesses to a year-round membership base. The Chamber of Commerce provides great opportunities to network with their Breakfast at the Beach, second Thursdays of every month, Business After 5, the last Thursday of the month and Business Under 40. All of these committees are listed on the Chamber of Commerce website at www.wasagainfo.com. The Chamber of Commerce will celebrate its 75th Anniversary in cooperation with their Annual Business Awards on Thursday, May 9th at the RecPlex. Complimentary invitations have been extended to past Presidents and special 75th Anniversary lapel pins have been created. Dinner will be catered by Georgian Circle Family Restaurant with a special designed cake to commemorate their 75th Anniversary. Dianna Chycki is host of Beach Corner and Committee Member of the Wasaga Beach Short Film Festival. Beach Corner broadcasts weekly Tuesdays and Thursdays at 5 p.m. and 7 p.m. www.beachBOOSTERradio.com

Why is it important for people and their organizations to work together? My famous story I tell is about water droplets. A water droplet by itself is pretty innocuous. You can just wipe a water droplet off your brow, or switch your windshield wipers on and in one swipe it’s gone. Now take a gazillion water droplets driving in the same direction and you have a hurricane force that is virtually unstoppable. Over the last 20 years, things have gotten so complex that you cannot tackle problems the same way. It takes inter-dependent thought, resources, effort and a shared vision to get things done. Not one person, one company, one organization or one level of government has the capability to get things done given our world of information exchange, multi stakeholder needs, social media, consumer power and rules, regulations and standards put in place to protect everyone. One more thing, "A bad system will beat a good person every time" (W. Edwards Deming, Total Quality Management). "94% of all failure is a result of the system... not people" (W. Edwards Deming) I believe if we want to take this community to a greater level we have to break from the system that has perhaps worked in the past but will hinder us in the future. If we ask better questions we are sure to get better answers and get the direction we need to make things happen in this community. What are the different ways that our community organizations can work together? How can we build stronger relationships across our businesses, service groups, schools, churches, clubs, citizen groups, and the various levels of governments as well as our community neighbours? How do we extend the business networking we are doing to the overall community? How can we increase our coordinating abilities across various organizations? How can we garner cooperation amongst all of our organizations? How do we nurture collaboration in this community? I believe it starts with a shared vision. When I say shared, I mean, each and every Wasaga Beach resident must see themselves in our town’s vision. Here it is. “Wasaga Beach is a thriving fully serviced community, respectful of its history and culture, offering a variety of residential, educational and commercial choices in neighbourhoods developed in harmony with the environment that provides its residents, businesses and visitors with a full range of services while promoting a healthy lifestyle and high community standards.” Are you up for aligning in the same direction like a water droplet in a hurricane and become part of an unstoppable force? Beach BOOSTER is certainly here to help and inform. Send me your thoughts. Please email me at Gary@beachbooster.com

The Provincial Parks of Simcoe County

Wasaga Beach Provincial Park is the first provincial park in Canada awarded the Blue Flag designation for its efforts to manage Wasaga’s shoreline according to international Environmental Standards The Explorer, a confirmed camper, is looking forward to the reopening of our provincial park system for another summer. Simcoe County is well-blessed with Provincial Parks, parks like Bass Lake and Wasaga Beach. Many have already opened while others are getting ready for the Victoria Day weekend. Bass Lake is a deep kettle lake located on the outskirts of Orillia. Soon, loons will be calling from the lake while the sounds of rails and bitterns will be heard from a nearby marsh. The land that the park occupies, less than a half of a square kilometre, was once farmland owned by some of the first settlers to the area in the 1850s. Purchased by William S. Rowe and developed for use by the Bass Lake Cooperative, the park is a gentle place, just right for kids looking for a fishing treat, sandy beaches for swimming, and a creative children’s playground. There is a marked cross-country ski trail some four kilometers in length that also serves springtime hikers. Bass Lake is a good place from which to branch out and explore other provincial parks. For example, there is Earl Rowe Provincial Park, a few kilometers west of Alliston. Located on the Boyne River and donated to the province by the former Lieutenant Governor, Earl Rowe, this good sized day park features the Willow Walk Trail with a hermit’s cave at the end. And then there is Wasaga Beach’s Provincial Park with its fifteen square kilometers of sand and shore. Here, you will find the only parabolic sand dunes in Ontario and, this time of year, only a few folks walking the Longest Freshwater Beach in the World. It’s a great place for a picnic or to enjoy a canoe trip down the Nottawasaga River.

Dreams Take Flight 2013 The Wasaga Beach Lions have sponsored 4 students to have an adventure of their lifetime through Dreams Takes Flight. Their magic will being at sunrise on May 8th. At the Air Canada hangar, volunteers will have been working for hours to prepare the children's welcome. And what a welcome awaits them! As the children arrive, a sendoff party begins under two giant planes. Celebrities, musicians, dancers, and costumed characters mingle with the delighted kids. The volunteers will be working feverishly to greet the now wide-eyed children and ensure trip organizers have all required details about any special needs the children may have. After a fun and celebratory morning show, it's time to takeoff! They will then be off to Disney. The flight goes by quickly, with entertainment from the flight crew and a healthy breakfast. After the plane touches down, it's time to get on the waiting buses and drive the short distance to Disney. In the Magic Kingdom, the groups head off in search of fun. And what a euphoric day for everyone! There's a new thrill around every corner, with exciting rides, breathtaking shows, all their favourite Disney characters, yummy treats and plenty of new friends. Nothing finishes off a magical day better than fireworks — and Disney knows how to light up the sky! Afterwards, the tired but happy group makes their way back to the airport. Once back on the plane, most of the children are soon fast asleep, dreaming of their adventure with Mickey, Donald Duck and company. The plane ride home goes by in a flash — or a snooze — and they're back in Toronto. A special thanks to Boston Pizza and Superstore for sponsoring their “Get to know each other” social!

Calcium and Vitamin D - You Probably Aren’t Getting Enough by James Meschino DC, MS, ND, ROHP

Most people don’t realize that the consequences of osteoporosis fractures cause more deaths each year in Canada than the combined mortality rate for breast and ovarian cancers. The real tragedy is that osteoporosis is a preventable disease, which requires optimal intake of calcium and vitamin D. During the past 10-15 years studies have shown that calcium supplementation can reduce bone loss in postmenopausal women and that the combination of calcium and vitamin D supplementation could significantly reduce fracture occurrence in elderly women. However, there has been much debate as to how much calcium and vitamin D to ingest to derive maximum protection against osteoporosis and related fractures. A recent study by MF Hitz, JB Jenson and P Eskildsen has shed significant light on this issue. Their double-blind, placebo controlled study (published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition -July 2007) involved 122 subjects, over 50 years of age (84% were postmenopausal women), who had sustained a low energy fracture of the hip or upper extremity. These subjects were randomly assigned to ingest 1550 mg of elemental calcium plus 1400 IU of vitamin D or a placebo (containing 200 IU of vitamin D). After 12 months the group receiving the calcium and vitamin D supplements showed reduced bone turnover, and had significantly increased their bone mineral density (primarily in the low back), with the most physically active individuals showing the best

overall results. In contrast, subjects in the placebo group showed a further loss of bone density, including those who were physically active. Based on these results as well as previous studies, I strongly recommend that adults ingest 1500 mg of calcium and 1200-1400 IU of vitamin D per day from food and supplements. These levels of intake not only guard against osteoporosis, but are also associated with a decreased risk of breast, prostate and colon cancer, as well a multiple sclerosis. Vitamin D primarily reduces risk of multiple sclerosis as well as these cancers, with the exception of colon cancer, whereby both vitamin D and calcium have shown protective effects. An important marker is to achieve a blood Vitamin D level above 80 nmol/L. As most adults consume only 500 mg per day of calcium from food, on average, and ingest very little vitamin D overall, most individuals would benefit from 800-1,000 mg of calcium and 12001400 IU of vitamin D supplementation on a daily basis. Some exceptions include individuals with hyperparathyroidism, sarcoidosis, and organ transplant patients. Dr. Meschino, who lives in Wasaga Beach is the author of The Meschino Optimal Living Program. Wasaga Beach Pop. 18,000, Simcoe County. The Town of Wasaga Beach on Nottawasaga Bay off Georgian Bay and at the mouth of the Nottawasaga River. The name Wasaga is from Nottawasaga, derived from the Indian for the “outlet of Iroquois river.” At the mouth of the river is Nancy Island, formed by the wreck of the schooner Nancy. Orignally a trading ship of the North West Company, it was commandeered by the British Navy during the War of the 1812 and outfitted for war. In 1814, during a naval battle with three American ships, the Nancy sought refuge in the Nottaswasaga River, but ran aground and burned. Silt and sand built up around the charred hulk and formed a small island. In 1925 what remained of the hull was dug up and put on display in an environmentally controlled chamber. A museum on the island depicts local events of the War of 1812 and displays artifacts recovered from the Nancy. The population of Wasaga Beach multiplies many times over in the summer, when holidayers flock to its beautiful 14-km long sandy beach.

The Way Wasaga Was by Joe Bickerstaff The Palace Pier Roller Rink The Palace Pier Roller Rink was located on the river just behind Pedro's on Mosley Street. The Prezio family started construction of the concrete rink early Spring 1959 and it was open to the public by June of that year. The building still standing on the site, contained a Skate Exchange, Snack Bar and had stairs leading down to the riverfront rink. There was a small Learner's Area for newbies to practise their skills on roller skates. Although the rink was active through the day, it came to life at dusk. The rink was well lit and skaters enjoyed the sounds of a Disc Jockey playing the music of the day... and often a live band would play on the stage overlooking the rink. In 1968 the giant Super Slide was constructed beside the rink and added to the fun! The Palace Pier was closed after the 1969 Summer season and the Super Slide was dismantled in 2008. The roller rink is now a parking lot.
