That Extra Scratch Behind the Ear By Debbie Culos Grooming Salon Can the Owners Watch?

The biggest complaint owners have about groomers is that they can't watch how the groomer works on their dog. Especially, when their spunky, happy dog shake and shivers, whines or has to be dragged to go through the salon door because they are afraid. Some dogs are so scared they defecate or urinate. The worst reaction is when the dog totally ignores the owner for days after being groomed because the dog is so upset. The owner is justifiably worried at this unusual behaviour or fear displayed by their dog because they are not normally like this. So the owner asks the obvious question, “What happened to my dog while he was here?” The owner received the usual and very vague replies, “Oh I think another dog scared him.” Or “Your dog bit me.” Or “Nothing different.” Etc., etc., etc. Some owners have hidden behind displays to observe their dog being groomed and have been appalled at what they see the groomer doing to their dog. Hitting, yelling at the dog, handling the dog roughly, and tying the lanyard too tight around the neck. These are just a few things observed. What must the dog endure out of sight of everyone? It's obvious the groomer's initial training was sadly lacking for these abuses to happen. Hand Racing Many owners have requested the opportunity to watch the groomer February 23 - Hand Racing - 707 River Road West. groom their dog and have been politely, abruptly and sometimes rudely Owned and operated by Joanne Pavlovic. told “NO you can't go into the grooming or bathing areas.” “The dog will The event will be held on Thursday, February 23, get excited and misbehave when the owner is there”, is the excuse most 2017 from 5:00 - 6:30 pm often given by the groomer. This relaxes the owner and in turn the dog picks up on the calmness of the owner and will relax too. Fact #4 that word of mouth travels very fast whether the news is good or bad. Owner, if you are happy with the service rendered on your dog and the dog is happy, leave a tip with your payment, spread the word and then go back to the groomer again. If you are not happy with the services, don't go back. If the dog receives injuries, the owner is not obligated to pay the bill, plus the owner is entitled to a truthful explanation of what happened, not vague excuses. If the injury is major and requires vet treatment, remember, the groomer is responsible for the injury occurring during the dog's stay at the salon. Above all the groomer/salon is to be made responsible for the vet bills pertaining to the injury. Razor burns, nicks and chunks in the skin by the clippers, eyes poked by scissors. Tongues, feet and ears cut by scissors. Pieces of black blade guides imbedded in the skin which then become infected. Toe nails cut so short that it takes days for the bleeding to stop. Dogs hung and sustaining neck injuries. Dogs have died because they were left in drying kennels, with the heat on too high for too long. The list goes on. There shouldn't be a list! These injuries are a controlled form of negligence or animal abuse and the only way a bad groomer gets away with it, is basically implying you weren't there to witness what happened so you'll just have to take their word for it, as to what happened. The dog's not going to talk. Or the groomer doesn't say anything about the incident at all till the owner Dazzling Flowers in Wasaga Beach discovers the injury after they get the dog home. The groomer/salon's response to call back complaint is “That could have happened at any time after you left the salon”. Once again the owner is left holding the bill, an injured dog and a whole lot of righteous anger. Owners don't be afraid to give your dog a good once over before you pay the bill and leave the salon. Especially, when the dog's behaviour appears unusual. Owners you are not only your dogs' trusted companion, you are also their voice. Common sense and patience is required to be a decent groomer and believe me, there are some very good groomers out there.

Chef Brian with Mercy Chefs in Haiti Recently I spent two weeks in Haiti with a faith based, non profit organization called Mercy Chefs. Mercy Chefs was formed in 2006 by Chef / pastor Gary LeBlanc to provide disaster relief in the United States and abroad. I became a part of this group in 2010 when a devastating earthquake struck Haiti. Mercy Chefs was dispatched there to provide clean drinking water and nutritious restaurant style meals to first responders and victims. A fully functional kitchen was erected in Chambrun in order to train a staff of the local population in areas of hygiene, sanitation and basic cooking skills. That Kitchen is operational today and is run totally by a now skilled Haitian work force. I was privileged to be able to return to see what has changed over the past 6 years. The recipe that I would like to feature are two popular Haitian dishes. Spicy chicken and Beans with Rice. Anyone who has been to Haiti or the Dominican will be aware that beans and rice are a staple food on the Island and is eaten by the locals twice a day for lunch and dinner either as a side dish or a main course. The Beans with Rice recipe was featured in the last edition of Beach BOOSTER. Here is the recipe for Spicy Chicken.

Haitian Spicy Chicken INGREDIENTS 1 3 lb) fryer chicken cut in 8 pc 1 large onion, sliced thin 1 bunch of Ramps (wild leeks) or green onions 1 scotch bonnet pepper, chopped fine 3 garlic cloves, smashed or 3 minced garlic 3/4 cup tomato sauce 3 tablespoons sugar salt, to taste 2 limes or lemons vegetable oil DIRECTIONS Wash chicken well & pat dry. Rub each piece with limes/lemons and sprinkle with salt. Heat oil in heavy ovenproof pan. Preheat oven to 375°F. Fry chicken pieces in hot oil. Meanwhile, in a bowl, combine garlic, sugar, tomato sauce and salt; mix well. After 5 minutes of frying the chicken, add sliced onions and chopped pepper, for 5-7 minutes. Remove pan from heat and drain excess oil and add the tomato mixture, stirring well. Place the pan in oven & bake uncovered for 20 minutes or until chicken is cooked completely.

A New Musical Battle As GTMF Turns 5 Beach Booster Media Group is proud once again to be one of the sponsors at this year's 5th Annual Georgian Triangle Music Festival scheduled from June 30th to July 1st masterminded by Shawn Crozier, event coordinator and founder. The musical event is a multivenue, multi genre music festival for all ages in Wasaga Beach attracting local and out of town artists in Ontario. According to Shawn, the music festival attempts to have a good mix of local and touring Ontario acts showcasing their music in our community. “The furthests were from the Niagara Region, Niagara on the Lake, Hamilton, Toronto, Kingston and London. We had some musicians who traveled three to four hours to be part of the event.” Shawn expects this year the festival will attract over 30 acts extending across various host venues in our community. The diverse musical genres will range from rock, blues, country, hip-hop, jazz and singer/songwriters. Included in the mix is a youth section for kids up to 16-years-old that will take place at the Wasaga Beach Youth Centre. New this year is the introduction of “Battle of the Sands” presented by the Georgian Triangle Music Festival in collaboration with the Town of Wasaga Beach. Semi-finalists will be announced on April 15th via their website, Facebook and press release. The top 4 bands and singer/songwriters from the semi-final will proceed to the final scheduled June 17th at the Wasaga Beach Waterfront Festival. “We are collecting video submissions and in March we will start voting for the qualifying round of Battle of the Sands by promoting to your family and fans. TIPPING POINT Changing Wasaga Beach Lives

GARY CERANTOLA gary@beachBOOSTER.com

Postive Thoughts... or not

David Harrison Shop Owner / Mechanic

As I am preparing for the macro-economic lecture I'm about to give to my Georgian College class this week, it suddenly occurred to me how positive thoughts are so important to sustain any kind of confidence in any level of an economy. If there are expectations of a downturn, individuals and companies just naturally save more and invest less. The result is, the economy shrinks. That's how it works. This means that if we have people saying dismal things about our town, even if they are based on a new Trump term called "alternative facts", it has a profound influence on would-be new residents wanting to come to live here as well as would-be businesses wanting to expand or move here to start a new business. Or for that matter, new visitors wanting to come to our town and enjoy it. It's that simple. Thoughts and memes are very powerful. They affect every day decisions in a critical way. The really hard part about actual residents saying not so good things about our town, while I'm not sure why, is that it takes about six to eight "atta-boys" to make up for each one of those "oh sh*ts". This not only is disconcerting, it's the heavy lifting you have to do to counter brand erosion of our town, while it's hard enough just to create a workable infrastructure and services concept and have citizens buy-in to it so we can secure our future. Our efforts should be focused on, for starters, keeping our youth at home, justifying a new high school, building tourism, building a new multi-use recreation center, building a state of the art library, creating an awesome gathering centre and downtown we all could be proud of and benefiting all of our citizens and visitors with life experiences and a quality of life that could be the best around Georgian Bay. At the end of the day, if we are not all in this together, how can we possibly build a promising viable future for this town. The very people making these not so great comments about our town, if anything, are eroding their very own residential property values. "Just sayin." “Be The Beach”, send me your thoughts and comments at Gary@beachbooster.com. Your efforts count in making this community the preferred place in which to live, learn, work and play. Gary is a YB12 Coach and Business Advisor for Critel Professional Services, www.critel.ca, and lives, learns, works and plays in Wasaga Beach.

Wasaga Beach Winter Tourism

When the snow is delivered from Georgian Bay and the trails are open, Wasaga Beach is a busy place with snowmobilers visting from all over Ontario and beyond. We welcome these Winter Tourists to our community! Last weekend's snow brought these happy sledders in from Midland to enjoy what Main Street Wasaga Beach has to offer.

access to most points in town. Hotels welcomed sledders into their dining rooms and beverage rooms with great meals and live entertainment. Motel rooms were occupied with snowmobilers and parking lots lined with cars and trailers. Once visitors unloaded their sleds, these snow machines provided the only means of transportation necessary for the rest of the stay in Wasaga Beach. River front establishments like the Dyconia Resort, The Nancy Villa, The Allistonia Hotel and The Apollo were just a quick zip up or down the frozen Nottawasaga, while even the famous Windjammer Room of the Capstan Inn on the beach opened to entertain the devotees of this new winter sport.

Wasaga Beach Winter Carnaval was held on the frozen river at one time! With the popularity of snowmobiling catching on in the late 60’s and early 70’s, there was all kinds of optimism in Wasaga Beach that finally we had come to a point where we could truly be a four season destination. We had it all with the snow, the hotels that lined the beach and river and all within an easy drive up the 400 from Toronto. Hotel, bar and restaurant owners rushed to winterize their establishments and advertised “Open All Year” for the first time in Wasaga’s history. The Nottawasaga River seemed to freeze completely every year, providing a smooth and fun “throughway”, allowing

boasted first class dealerships for most of the major snowmobile manufactures. Bing Jowett’s Four Seasons Sports sold Arctic Cat sleds and grew to be able to boast that they were the biggest Arctic Cat dealership in Ontario. Yes, the sign stated... “Ontario’s Largest Cat House”! The Wasaga Beach Winter Carnival attracted even more folks as special events were held in the centre of the frozen river, under the Main Street Bridge. Radar Runs and thrill riders jumping ramps added to the fun. Whipper Billy Watson hosted his famous Snowarama from Wasaga Beach. Although we don’t get the use of the river in the winters of today as it does not seem to freeze as it did in the past, the Wasaga Snowmobile Club provides us with some of the best maintained marked snowmobile trails in the country! Wasaga Beach is snowmobile friendly and we and our visitors can ride sleds almost anywhere on our local roads that connect us to the trail system and of course the beach. Beach BOOSTER wants Wasaga Beach to once again be The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario! Let’s encourage safe, fun sledding in town this winter and remember to welcome our winter visitors! Joe Bickerstaff

Wasaga Beach became known as "The Snowmobile Capital of Ontario" as enthusiasts from all over south and central Ontario discovered our town as true Winter Getaway. Close enough... but far enough to provide the fresh air, the openness and of course the much longed for snow! To serve the sledders, Wasaga Beach

Fit and Healthy in The Beach De-Mystifying the Personal Training Landscape It’s the New Year and you’ve made a commitment to better your health – Congratulations! This is a big step towards leading a healthier life. If part of this commitment involves a membership at a health club, keep reading to learn more about how trainers can help you reach your goals at Anytime Fitness. Each member who joins Anytime Fitness receives a complimentary Fitness Consultation with one of our friendly, certified personal trainers. The objective of the fitness consultation is to arm the member with the knowledge of what they need to do to achieve their specific goal. How many days they should work out. What type of exercises they should do. How to properly stretch. How often they should rest. How nutrition impacts their success. Some people have the dedication and discipline to use the information obtained in the fitness consultation to stick to a routine and make fitness a consistent part of their lifestyle. For everyone else, personal training is a proven method for achieving your goals and holding yourself accountable. There are a variety of options to choose from when considering personal training services. Virtual Coaching (Anytime Fitness App launching March 1) Cost: $ (low) The new Anytime Fitness App will allow you to track your meals and workout, while also integrating with wearable tech and other fitness apps such as MapMyFitness or MyFitnessPal. In addition to all of this, for a low monthly fee, members can have access to a virtual coach through this app. Their coach (who is a personal trainer employed at their home club) can provide them with workout ideas, recipes, and hold them accountable to completing the recommended amount of workouts each week. If the coach notices their member has not been to the gym in a few days, they will touch base to see what is happening and if needed, re-motivate the member.

Group Training (launching April 1) Cost: $$ (mid range) Group training is an effective and fun way to get in shape. Not only will you be held accountable by your trainer, your new peer group will also be cheering on your success. Group training sessions can accommodate anywhere from 3 to 12 participants and are a great idea if you are serious about your fitness goals, want to meet like-minded individuals, and get personal attention from a trainer. It is also a very economical option compared to 1:1 training. A variety of fitness levels, ages, and goals can be accommodated in these sessions and the participants are amazed at how much fun exercising can really be. 1:1 Personal Training Cost: $$$ While this is the most expensive training option, there are many reasons to choose this route. If you have specific n e e d s s u c h a s r e c o v e r i n g f r o m a n i n j u r y, athletic/competition or job-related (i.e. corrections/military) training, or simply do not feel comfortable/confident working out on your own or in a group, 1:1 personal training is for you. Each session will be just you and your trainer. While they will be working on your physical health, trainers in this setting can also be beneficial for their client’s mental or emotional health. 1:1 personal training is also a great place to start in order to gain the confidence and physical strength to move into group training. Regardless of how a member chooses to begin their fitness journey, Anytime Fitness provides a scalable approach to personal training, allowing clients to adjust their services depending on their budgets, goals, or physical ability. Our objective is to keep members engaged so that their success is inevitable. Rosanna Catenaro, O2i
