What ― No Golf Show?

ell, it’s February, and normally, Victoria and I, along with our right-hand man Mike Hull, would be visiting with you at our booth at the KC Golf Show — billed as “The Official Launch of the New Golf Season.” Sadly, this year, there is No Golf Show. Damn COVID!

Our Mission — To Promote Golf 365 Days a Year. Tee Times Golf Guide™ Inc.

Mailing Address: P.O. Box 2196, Independence, MO 64055 Corporate Office: 816.878.4509 Publisher, Bill Cromwell, Editor-in-Chief Advertisement Placement and News/Article Requests Editor@TeeTimesMagazine.com

For the last 13 years, the kick-off to the new golf season was always highlighted by visiting with all our loyal readers, hearing their fun golf tales, comments about the courses played, and answering questions about the courses we recommend they play during the upcoming season.

Managing Editor Victoria Cromwell, VP@TeeTimesGG.com

A slice of history about the long-standing Kansas City Golf Show: from 2007 to 2011, Brian Wright of Midwest Sports Management, along with Rob Wilkin, owned and hosted the Kansas City Golf Show.

Creative Designers, Graphic Arts, Photography Bill and Victoria Cromwell

After the 2011 show, Varsity Communications, Inc. of Seattle, WA, bought the show rights from Midwest Sports Management and held its first show in 2012 (9 years ago). The three-day Kansas City Golf Show was completely remodeled for 2012 at the direction of national golf show producers Varsity Golf Shows. The KC show continued to grow, with nearly 8,000 golfers attending annually through 2020.

In recently reviewing my old historic photos from past KC golf shows, it’s interesting to look back and see how many of the businesses that exhibited at the shows from 2007 through 2020 are no longer in business and how much has changed within KC golf over the past (quick) 13 years. For example, for several years, the show’s headline exhibitor was The Golf Stop — KC’s largest golf superstore for many years. It was one of the last of many individually owned golf stores. Today, it’s the location of the Edwin Watts Store. The 2007 show included one exhibitor named “Last Minute Golfer” that promoted a new thing called “online tee time booking” — what? Why book online when I can just call the course? Today, Last Minute Golfer is no longer in business, but nearly all tee times are booked online. Did you know that from 2000 to 2009, our publication was newsprint in a tabloid format? It’s true; I have old show photos of our booth with magazines, err, newspapers in it to prove it. I like the look and feel better today. Hope you do as well. While the 2020 show went off without a hitch, it was only weeks later that COVID-19 changed everything, and we all know the rest of that horrid story. While we won’t see you at the Big Show this year, Victoria, Mike, and I will truly miss visiting with everyone, but please know that we love hearing from you and are only an email away. So, feel free to drop us a note, question, or comment at any time. Meanwhile, our great golf writers will be working hard to bring you more great golfing options and coverage during 2021, and we’ll keep the faith and look forward to seeing you again at our booth for “The Official Launch of the New Golf Season” at the 2022 show.

Kansas City Women’s Publinks Invite Area Golfers to Join the Fun in 2021!

A

s the Women’s Greater KC Publinks (WGKCPLA) turns 45 this year, it has 28 Metro Member Courses and payouts of almost $4000 in prize winnings every year for its members to spend in one of the Member Course pro shops. Swope Memorial helps kick off its 45th year by hosting its opening meeting on April 5, at 10 a.m., and you are invited to join the fun! Many Kansas City courses do not have an 18-hole daytime Ladies League, which is why WGKCPLA has so many ladies from all over Missouri and Kansas who come to play. It’s a fun Monday league. You can play in ALL the events or just choose a few. Learn to play by USGA rules and improve your game. There are special events, a TwoDay League Championship, and two guest days a year. All first-place winners are published in the Kansas City Star sports section weekly.

Springs), shot 78 and won in a scorecard playoff against Naomi Kilpatrick. The Champion Net-Medalist was a new member from Leavenworth (Trails West), Leah Hallinan, with a net 63. It was a strange year with COVID-19 restrictions and lots and lots of rain, but WGKCPLA members still managed to play 22 events last year, including the League Championship. The first day was rained out, but the shortened 2020 Championship results awarded our low gross and low net flight winners at Falcon Lakes. The winners were: ● Championship Flight: Naomi Kilpatrick (78) Donna Reid (66) ● 1st Flight: Joyce Andersen (88) Judy Baltuska (69) ● 2nd Flight: Sandy Pepper (89) Carol Travaglione (67) ● 3rd Flight: Linda Sadler (94) Audrey Brattain (66)

WGKCPLA Historic Fun Facts

WGKCPLA is a ladies’ golf league that plays at a different Member Course every Monday from April thru October. If you have an active GHIN and are interested in playing with a group of fun ladies, you can join by going to its website: wgkcpla.com or by emailing communications@wgkcpla. com. Fill out a registration form and pay $50 dues to play in your choice of 24 different events. Green fees are paid at the course on the day of play. If you have a membership or Patron Card at the course scheduled for play, you may use that rate. Members do not pay tournament rates, only regular green fees. If you like to walk, some of the courses offer a walking rate. Tee times usually are a modified shotgun at most courses, starting at 8 a.m. or 9 a.m. in April and October. See the schedule for rates and tee times. There is a flight for all levels of play: Championship flight, 1st flight, 2nd flight, and 3rd flight up to a 38.4 index/40 course handicap. There are weekly Medalist and Net-Medalist and 1st, 2nd, and 3rd places in each flight (gross and net), so everyone has a chance to win.

We have all had an ACE!

Do you have anyone in your golf league who has had Six ACES? That’s six Holes-In-One! WGKCPLA does; her name is Marilyn Lewis. (Photo above of all the women who scored an ACE in 2020.)

If you play in five events by July 20, you qualify to play in the League Two-Day Championship.

Jo Poyzer (Fred Arbanas home course), a constant Medalist in the league, has had five aces. Judy Baltuska and Joyce Andersen from St. Andrews have each had four aces. The 2020 Champion, Cathy Francis, has had three, and Karen Reynolds (Hodge Park home course), who plays in our 3rd flight, also has three. Twelve members have had two aces, and another 16 have each had one.

The winner’s names have been engraved on the WGKCPLA trophy since 1977. Cathy Francis (on left), the Champion Medalist for 2019 (Paradise Pointe) and 2020 (Excelsior

One of the WGKCPLA members, Sandy Pepper (Trails West home course), had her second hole in one this past year at Ironhorse while playing in one of the Monday events on August 10th. Marilyn Lewis (St. Andrews home course) had her sixth ace on the same hole at Ironhorse a few days later with some of her friends.

New 2021 Drivers

Offer Epic Jail-breaking AI Speed and MAX Power! by Eddie Hall, Equipment Writer

T

his promises to be another “BIG” year for increasing yardage and accuracy off the tee box. All the manufacturers have done a good job of improving their driver offerings for 2021. It seems that as we approach a new year, there will be no way that golfers can get more out of their drives, but each year, the golf companies come through, and 2021 is no exception. Callaway leads the way with a return to the Epic name, but with increased technology. Callaway is framing the future of speed with the new 2021 Epic driver line up. Each different model features Callaway’s new Jailbreak AI (designed using artificial intelligence) Speed Frame, which allows them to achieve higher peak ball speeds and energy transfer. The brand, new Jailbreak AI Speed Frame works by stiffening the body of the driver both vertically and horizontally, providing more efficient energy transfer (ball speed) at all hit locations. That paired with their groundbreaking AI Flash Face technology, which provides maximum spin consistency and forgiveness across the face, creates the fastest and most accurate driver on the market. The new Epic is available in three models (outlined below) that will be sure to fit the needs of golfers across all skill levels. MSPR from $529.99

With the new Ping G425 drivers for 2021, PING is once again offering golfers uncompromising distance, more custom fitting options, and greater stability. The best way to explain what the designers and engineers at PING have done to make the new G425 drivers its best yet is to look at the technology that has been accumulated into the three new G425 driver models — the G425 Max, G425 SFT (Straight Flight Technology), and G425 LST (Low Spin Technology). MSRP: $499 Aerodynamics: The PING G425 drivers all feature reconfigured turbulators to improve airflow and help increase aerodynamic efficiency towards impact.

TaylorMade SIM Drivers

TaylorMade has improved on the SIM family with its introduction of the SIM2 drivers. The newest feature is the Forged Ring Construction, which is the key that unlocks a new dimension in distance and forgiveness. Forged from a lightweight and high strength aluminum that is milled to an exacting shape, it unites a massive rear weight, a full carbon sole, crown, and a new milled back cup face. What does this mean to you? By creating a driver designed for increased stability and forgiveness, TaylorMade gives you the confidence to attack any tee shot. The SIM2 family includes the SIM2, SIM2 MAX, and the SIM MAX-D. These are definitely drivers that you need to try soon. MSRP: $529.99

Attention Senior Golfers

Turning 50?

The Classic Senior Golf League Wants You! Ready For 2021 Season Editorial by Bill Cromwell

Classic Senior League players warm up at Tiffany Greens prior to an event in 2019.

I

t was 16 years ago; I had just turned 50 when my dad, who was 70 at the time and played in the league for several years, asked me to join him. With slight arrogance, I boasted strongly, “I’m not a senior!” Dad chuckled, then told me that once you turn 50, you can play in the Classic Senior Golf League (CSGL). I admit that my ego did not want to accept age 50 classified me as a “Senior.” Now, at 66, I’ve conceded to the fact! Nevertheless, I’ll never forget how much I enjoyed golfing with my dad and his crew, who at the time were all age 70– plus. We played together often. It was always fun to Blast tee shots past theirs by 100 yards, but more often than not, I was paying “them” for skins after the round. Funny how that works! Now in its 28th year, the Classic Senior Golf League is for golfers aged 50-plus who want “slightly” competitive golf. I found the league perfect to test my skills against other golfers (and dad) in a competitive yet friendly atmosphere. Plus, I really enjoyed playing at a variety of great golf courses. The league President Jack Strange admits the 2020 season did not go without challenges brought on by the COVID-19 crisis. “In mid-December 2019, we opened our membership drive for 2020. We had about 14

February 2021

115 members registered and ready to play beginning in mid-April,” said Strange. “On March 30, we announced that, based on what we knew about the COVID contagion and the restrictions that had been placed on golf courses, we choose to cancel the first half of the season — seven events mid-April to mid-July. In June, we reconsidered the situation and decided to play the second half of our season. We had about 35 members opt-out of the second half, but we still had about 80 players instead of our normal 115.”

CSGL league Vice President Steve Sutherlin Strange says that players who played quickly adapted to the COVID era rules — check-in outside, masks in the clubhouse, restricted food and beverages, and TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

especially the lack of an after-round beer, burger, and time to gather with friends. “That eased a bit during the season, but still a big impact. All in all, most of the guys managed fairly well. It was just great to get out and play golf!” said Strange. The league won’t tie up your entire summer as the season consists of 14 events played on alternating Mondays at many of KC’s best public and private courses. “It’s fun to travel around to different courses playing in the league rather than the same course each week,” said league Vice President Steve Sutherlin. Jack Strange, now in his third year as president of the CSGL, said, “The league plays on Mondays from April through September, and we play by USGA rules, including playing the ball down and holing out all putts. The league plays a unique stroke play/match play format where weekly prizes are awarded in each of three flights played from different tees, so distances better reflect playing ability. Play is stroke play with individual headto-head matches for points that accumulate for mid-season and season-long awards.” Strange says the league limits membership to approximately 115 members and is open to male golfers age 50 and over who must play to a maximum course handicap of 20.

The league is run with an all-volunteer board, and except for some small administrative expenses, all league fees are returned to the members in the way of prize payouts. The 2021 season payouts will depend on league size.

Grab your dad and/or good friends and join the league — perhaps you’ll create a few great memories of your own this year. To join the CSGL fun, the fee is only $125 to $135, depending on the time of year that you join. Also, you will pay reduced green fees at each event you play. Green fees for the 2021 season (including cart) will vary depending on the course — from $34 to $50 — averaging about $40. Prize monies, excluding optional skins pot ($10 per man), will be paid from league registration fees.

Cold Weather No Problem for

94-Year-Old Frank Payne Navy vet has shot has age and most played rounds at Sunflower Hills by Alan Hoskins, Feature Writer

T

’was the week before Christmas, and all over the course, hardly a creature was stirring — except for Frank Payne dashing from one hole to the next. Temperatures hovering below freezing that week failed to deter Payne from his appointed rounds — six straight days at an amazing 94½ years of age. On that Monday, it was 28 degrees at tee time; 34 at the end of 18 holes (I know, I was there). On Tuesday, it was 23 degrees when Payne started, 31 at finish time. And so, it continued the rest of the week. Weather warmed a little, but the first balls were hit in freezing cold weather. “The first couple of days, it was pretty cool, but I just love the fresh air and the exercise,” says Payne. “Just dress warm. I had a bunch of buddies who watched TV and smoked cigars when it got cold, and they’re all gone now. Tell the ladies if they want their husbands to live a long life to get them out on the golf course.” A legend at Sunflower Hills in western Wyandotte County, it’s safe to say Frank Payne has played more rounds and shot his age more times than anyone in the course’s 44-year history. He also swung the longest driver at one time. “I added four inches to a regular driver and then another four inches,” says the 5’9” Payne (photo on left). “It comes right up to my nose. I could hit the ball a long way. For about 10 years, I could hit it with the best of them. A lot of guys tried it; no one could hit it.”

▲ Frank Payne, at age 94-year-old, can be found yearround at Sunflower Hills playing almost daily. This photo was taken in December 2020 when it was 28 degrees at our tee time and a brisk 34 degrees at the end of our 18 holes. (photo by Alan Hoskins.)

“Frank was always tinkering with his clubs trying to get more yardage,” says veteran Sunflower Hills head professional Jeff Johnson. “He was always trying to get that extra yardage. Now, he’s a classic senior golfer, not long off the tee but

right down the middle. And he’s always practicing his putting. But the thing about Frank, he never complains about anything. He said he went through World War II, so nothing scares him.” A Navy veteran who now lives in Basehor, KS, Payne started playing Sunflower Hills not too long after it opened in 1977. For 26 years, he was a volunteer at the course, handling carts and other responsibilities. “I quit golf for four years so my wife and I could go on senior bus tours but then started again,” he says. Playing almost exclusively on weekdays, he played about 150 rounds in 2020. For the last six years, he estimates he’s shot his age more than half the time. “I play the yellow (senior) tees now and usually shoot about 89 to 92. Sunflower is a pretty tough course. I’ve only broke 80 twice.” Payne established himself in Sunflower folklore several years ago when a member of his foursome hit a tee shot close to the foursome ahead of him. “I didn’t hit the ball, but after the group ahead played out the hole, one of them came back to us,” remembers Payne. “The guy who hit it was a little scared, but I said I’d take care of it. The guy came back and said, ‘The next time that happens, we’re going to have it out.’ I said, ‘You drove all the way back here — let’s see what you got right now.’ He drove away, and later, he told someone he felt he should apologize but didn’t know if he wanted to mess with that one guy.” Probably a good idea. In the 1980s, Payne promoted fights at Memorial Hall and has two sons, Mark and Jeff, who are both in the Karate Hall of Fame in Dallas, TX. Payne plays in two 9-month Sunflower Hills senior leagues, teaming with Greg Carbury on Mondays and Emmitt Hightower on Wednesdays, then exchanges barbs with Dale Moore, Bill Palmer, Dean Bundy, Wayne Johnson, and Dave Vaughn the rest of the week. “Every time I outdrive the long knockers, I go home and write it in a book,” confesses Payne. “I get tired of those guys telling me ‘Frank, that’s you back there.’” Vaughn says, “He’s got a whole novel on me.” An outstanding football and basketball player at the old Argentine High School in Kansas City, KS, Payne left after his junior

(photo by Alan Hoskins.) year to join the Navy. “I had to get my dad to sign papers to let me enlist,” he says. “I lost a brother-in-law and a cousin in Normandy and felt I wanted to help.” That was in 1944. Assigned to the attack transport USS Saint Croix, Payne landed in Japan just five days after the end of WWII and spent several months shuttling troops and weapons in China and Indo-China. He finished that tour decommissioning the USS Cassin Young, the most decorated destroyer in WWII, now on display in Boston Harbor. “I got my GED in 1947 and then went back into the Navy as a gunner’s mate on the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany for one year. It was a new ship, and I thought I’d gone to heaven. I pitched for our softball team, including a big game against an Air Force team in Libya.” His second tour took him on a shakedown cruise in the Mediterranean, a cruise that took him to ports in Turkey, Libya, Cypress, Crete, and France. His favorite port was Nice, France, where he barely missed meeting up with the rich and famous. “Another buddy and I were hitchhiking to Nice, and a couple of other guys got ahead of us and were picked up. We found out later it was Elizabeth Taylor and her first husband, Nicky Hilton.”

join him at Bendix, now Honeywell. “After 29 years, they talked me into forming my own consulting company. I consulted six months in Albuquerque but wanted to come home. I stayed another year and then retired. I also promoted fights at Memorial Hall, including one for ESPN. They wanted me to have one a month, but they wouldn’t pay any money.” Payne and his wife, Caroline, were married 50 years before she passed away in 2002. They had three sons, Mark (now deceased), Jeff, and Doug. “Mark and Jeff are in the Karate Hall of Fame,” he says proudly. “Black Belt magazine ranked Mark the fifth best in the world in kickboxing in the middleweight division and Jeff third in the lightweight division. They were best known in Texas and Oklahoma but fought all over the Midwest.” In all his years at Sunflower Hills, Payne has never had a hole-in-one — and doesn’t want one. “I made a deal with the Lord that he wouldn’t take me until I made a holein-one,” he says. “One day, on No. 13, I hit one right at the hole, and Emmitt Hightower said, ‘Go in!’ I told him to shut-up! It was a Calloway ball, and they listen to you. It stopped four inches from the hole. If I ever get one, it’s a mis-hit.” 

After getting out of the service, Payne worked 14 years as a foreman in the mechanical department at General Motors. He was persuaded by his former boss to

Shoal Creek Golf Course Not Your Typical Muni! Kansas City, MO. by John Baccala,

S

hoal Creek Golf Course in Kansas City north has been adapting to an ever-changing climate and clientele. Change is an operative word in the golf business, particularly last year. General Manager Brett Plymell knows that all too well.

Since its opening in 2001, Shoal Creek has always maintained the course at a high level — a level many area courses would love to emulate. This five-star “Must Play” (by Tee Times Golf Guide Magazine) par-71 layout, now in it’s 19th year, just keeps getting better thanks to subtle changes Plymell and his staff keeps making year after year. The 2017 changes of clearing trees and brush around the course, especially around the beautifully picturesque par-3 5th hole, among other areas — still looks fabulous to this day. “We removed a lot of trees around the entire course in 2017,” said Plymell. “The goal was to increase air-flow and sunlight on the greens. There were a few greens that never really got good air-flow or got limited sunlight due to the trees blocking both wind and sun.

Photography by Bill Cromwell

“Morning sunlight is needed on cool-season grasses, as it stimulates growth and relieves disease pressure. Air-flow greatly reduces disease pressure as well,” he said. “Our greens have been in great condition all year, so we have certainly seen the benefits of all of that hard work from 2017, even now, three years later.” Plymell is quick to give credit to Superintendent Duane Sander and his crew. “They do a great job maintaining the course,” he said. And it is not just the greens and fairways at Shoal Creek that are immaculate. Landscaping throughout the course and around the 11,000-squarefoot clubhouse is outstanding, and Plymell said that really adds to the overall experience — whether you are playing golf or not. “The whole crew works hard all year to make sure greens, tees, fairways, and all grass surfaces are kept in great condition.” Plymell loves the reaction he gets when first-time players discover Shoal Creek is a municipal golf facility. He smiled when he said, “We get a lot of players from out of town. They are always very surprised when they find out that Shoal Creek is a municipal facility. Muni’ courses all around the country have long been perceived as kind-of second-tier.” Owned by the City of Kansas City, believe me, there is nothing second-tier about Shoal Creek — it’s a nationally recognized premier golf course. The course plays almost 7,000 yards from the tips, but there are four sets of tees, which makes the course very playable and enjoyable for golfers of any skill level. Shoal Creek features subtle elevation 20

changes, wide Zoysia fairways, and large Bentgrass greens with the course’s namesake (Shoal Creek) meandering through the grounds. Unlike many courses, there are not just two or three scenic holes on the course — every hole at Shoal Creek is truly scenic. One of Plymell’s favorites is the par-5 9th. “It is a reachable par 5, but there is a large tree right in front of the green that can block your approach shot.” Oh, that tree! Don’t get me started! While the front nine is visually and aesthetically pleasing in its own right, I think the back nine from 10 to 18 might just be the best nine-hole stretch in Kansas City. The uphill par-4 10th and long downhill par-3 11th are just a prelude to the short, but challenging, par-4 12th where you cross not one, but two hazards and hit to a green where the flag is seemingly always set behind the giant bunker fronting the green. It is a great golf hole! The par-3 17th considered a KC area best signature hole and a favorite among KC golfers.

The par-4 15th features water down most of the left side of the fairway all the way to the green. The 16th, also a par 4, features the same water hazard left of the fairway, with bunkers right and surrounding the green. And, the final two holes are among Plymell’s favorites. Number 17, a signature hole, is a downhill par 3 that plays over Shoal Creek. It’s a scenic hole with a rock wall fronting the green. The par-4 18th is perhaps one of the toughest finishing hole in KC. It plays 462 yards from the back tees into the prevailing south wind, with two fairway bunkers (right and left sides of the fairway) that will catch any errant tee shots. Plymell says Shoal Creek sets up well for any golfer — regardless of your ability level. His best advice is to keep the ball out of native and prairie grasses surrounding the course. If not, your ball is probably a “goner.” “Just keep it in the fairway and you’ll have a great time at Shoal Creek,” he exclaimed. Go play Shoal Creek ─ have fun! For more information or to make tee times, call the pro shop at 816.407.7242 or visit online at www.ShoalCreekGolf.com. 

PGA Pro Tips

For Winter Workouts

Enhance your game during the cold, dank, and gloomy winter months. by Ann E. Butenas, contributing writer

U

nless you are completely fanatical about your golf game, you probably find yourself relaxing a bit when it comes to improving your swing, exercising your body, and enhancing your overall game during the cold, dark, and gloomy winter months. While it may be tempting to just lounge on the couch and watch a few television shows cuddled up under a warm blanket, there are some highly productive ways to improve your game during the offseason — and you don’t even have to leave your home to do them! It does take some discipline and determination, however, but once you commit to the process, you will be on the fast track to keeping your swing — and your body — geared up and ready to go when spring rolls around, and you anticipate that first glorious tee time on a warm and sunny day. Midwest Section PGA member and Mission Hills Country Club teaching professional Matt Murdoch enjoys working with golfers on their overall fitness routines during the winter months. He has developed certain exercises golfers can practice at home that are specific to each individual. “You can’t teach everyone the same, as no two bodies are the same and everyone’s abilities are different,” he said, which is why each player benefits from a unique set of exercises. In the offseason, Murdoch likes to have his students focus on speed training, flexibility, strength, and mobility exercises to help them enhance their game and prepare them for the warmer months of play ahead. 24

February 2021

“I prescribe certain drills they can work on at home to help with any deficiencies they might have, and I can tailor these to players of all ages,” said Murdoch. One particular exercise he promotes involves the use of a simple towel. “You just tie a knot at the end of a long towel and then make it go as fast as you can, using the towel to mimic the golf club, with the knot mimicking the clubhead,” explained Murdoch. “You make that towel do a swoosh out in front as you swing it like a golf club. Wherever the towel is loose, that will enable you to recognize where to speed up. You want to hear the swoosh sounds post-impact on the followthrough side.” Murdoch is less inclined to use heavy weights and prefers resistance bands instead, encouraging students to focus on any areas prone to injury, such as the shoulders, knees, back, and wrist. “My main advice is to work on mobility and also strengthen those areas prone to injury when you golf,” said Murdoch. “It’s no secret flexibility gets worse with age, and you can never work too much on that part of your training.” Murdoch also collaborates with Cody Shaffer, M.S.Ed., personal trainer and owner of Advanced Fitness Consulting – Kansas City, when developing fitness TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

routines for his students. Shaffer, who holds multiple fitness certifications, emphasized the number one thing an aspiring or avid golfer can do is work on their mobility and flexibility. “Implementing a static and dynamic flexibility routine would create a huge advantage on the course and in an individual’s activities of daily living,” Murdoch explained. “As little as 15 minutes a day of flexibility and mobility training could dramatically increase overall range of motion in as little as six to eight weeks. Areas of focus should be fullbody in nature, with a large focus in the hip flexors, hamstring complex, lumbar spine, and thoracic spine.” Midwest Section PGA member Evan Scobie, teaching professional at Kansas City Country Club, is certified through the Titleist Performance Institute (TPI). This certification program is designed for teaching professionals, medical practitioners, and fitness trainers to acquire an understanding of how the body functions during a golf swing. To that end, Scobie can effectively assess players’ swings and offer a series of stretches to complement their workouts. “I usually give sets of stretches to students that they can do that will help them manage their health down the road,” said Scobie. Like Murdoch, Scobie prefers using exercise bands for the simple reason they typically provide a level of resistance that allows muscles to become stronger, maintaining constant tension on the muscles during the entire movement of a

PGA Pro Tips particular exercise. As a result, muscle growth is greater. These bands also allow you to improve your range of motion in a safer and more easily controlled manner. “You can get those five-dollar stretch-bands and benefit from those using your own body weight,” Scobie explained. Scobie also encourages golfers to stand in front of a mirror and practice their swings. In doing this, you can assess your grip, stance, posture, and overall swing, getting instant and accurate feedback to advance your game.

We’re Serious About Your Game!

Most important, just staying in shape and adopting a casual fitness routine can prevent injury, add speed and power to your swing, allow more control over your swing, and keep you from getting fatigued on the course. When your muscles are stronger, they will protect your joints from the pressures of a golf swing. By getting your body ready and in shape, you can enjoy the game for years to come and potentially avoid the injuries that might sideline you. “The beauty of golf, especially in a COVID-19 world, is that it is one of the few things you can still do, so staying in shape is important to your game,” Scobie said. “It’s a harder game to play as you get older, and it definitely challenges you more mentally than physically at times. I hope to see more education in the future on how to mentally get stronger, not necessarily just physically.” If you hope to add some power to your game in the coming months for better golf scores this spring, exercise and fitness are integral parts of the equation. Remember to start slowly, and when you make a commitment to improving your health and fitness, you just might notice an improvement in your golf game. 

The Carlocks plan on making some additional updates to a handful of the villas, all with guests’ comfort in mind. “Lori and Alan have set The Villas up to be a success now and well into the future,” Gail says. “We want to continue to positively impact the lives of those who choose to stay at The Villas at Holiday Shores.” Get a great start on your Golf Trail Getaway at The Villas at Holiday Shores, featuring 25 villas overlooking the Lake of the Ozarks. 26

Plan Your 2021 Lake of the Ozarks Golf Trail “Courses to Play” List... Bear Creek Valley Golf Club.

Editorial & Photography by Bill Cromwell

Check-off your Bucket List courses to play during 2021.

he Osage Beach area is the place to be for a weekend of fishing, fun on the water, and loads of fantastic five-star golf at 13 golf courses. Kansas City golfers, there’s no need to hop on an airplane to some faraway place — it’s all right here in our backyard. Jump in the car, drive about two hours south, and tee-it-up that afternoon. The following course descriptions will help you become familiar with the courses available at the Lake of the Ozarks and valuable when it comes to choosing the courses to challenge. If you’re an ambitious golfer, you might play two courses each day and take full advantage of your Lake golf getaway. Enjoy!  Bear Creek Valley Golf Club It’s the best kept secrets at the Lake, and a fun course that features plush Zoysia fairways lined with mature oak trees leading to spectacular greens. A beautiful property winding through the Ozark hills near the Ozarks State Park. The course facilities include a driving range, practice green, clubhouse, pro shop, and casual restaurant and lounge with the best staff and breakfast at the Lake. Location: From Hwy 54 in Osage Beach, go south on Hwy 42 for a short two-tenths of a mile; course is on the left. Pro Shop: 573.302.1000, www.BearCreekValley.com.

 Deer Chase Golf Club

The entrance to the impressive clubhouse takes you on a very scenic drive through sections of the golf course creating a mouthwatering introduction to the day ahead. The clubhouse is beautiful with three floors — pro shop, bar and grill, banquet room, and deck overlooking the Auglaize River Valley view of the course. The course features hilly Ozark terrain through the back nine holes and river valley through the front nine. It's a beautiful piece of property. Roger Null helped design the par-71, 6,381-yard course, which has Bermuda fairways and the new style A4, A1 Bentgrass greens. The green fees are among the most affordable at the Lake. Location: From Osage Beach, take 54 Hwy south to "A" lake road. Take "A" east 3.4 miles to Lowell Williams Road. Turn right about 1.5 miles. The entrance will be on your left. 770 Deere Chase Rd, Linn Creek, MO. Pro Shop: 573.346.6117 or 866.633.3771, www.DeerChaseGolf.com.

The first tee at Bear Creek Valley Golf Club.

 Eldon Country Club Set amidst a backdrop of wooded areas, rolling hills, and creeks, Eldon Country Club is sure to provide a pleasurable experience for golfers. Zoysia fairways and an upgraded bunker system lead to accommodating greens. Course facilities include a driving range, pro shop, clubhouse, and snack bar. Location: Go north on Hwy 54. late winter making it the only public course at the Lake with green fairways during early spring. Designed in 1967 by Floyd Farley, the golf course offers a total routing of 36-36 for par 72. Although not especially long at 6,451 from the blues, the course’s rolling hills will afford you with the opportunity to hit every club in your bag. Location: Two miles west of Camdenton, off Hwy 54. After crossing the Niangua Bridge on Hwy 54, take the first left (Lake Rd. 54-79). For tee times, call the pro shop at 573.346.7218 or visit online at www.lakevalleygolf.com.  Osage National Golf Club The 27-hole course features a rolling terrain, lakes, creeks and the bluffs of the Osage River. A moderately challenging course, but still an okay golf experience. Location: Directly off Hwy 54 just north of Osage Beach, 1/2 mile past the Bagnell Dam Road exit. Look for the Osage National signs. 573.365.1950 or visit online at www.osagenational.com.  Redfield Golf Club Redfield Golf Club in Eugene, MO, is a semi-private, links-style golf course with Bentgrass fairways. Not your typical Ozarks mountain course, Redfield’s 18 holes feature 6,720 yards of links-style golf, six lakes, 42 bunkers, four par 5s, 10 par 4s and four par 3s. It’s the only course in the Lake area with Bentgrass fairways. It offers a lighted driving range that’s open seven days a week and a restaurant and bar to fill all of your food and beverage needs. Location: Redfield is located just minutes north of the Lake of the Ozarks’ Osage Beach area at 14005 Redfield Dr, (Hwy 54 & 17 Junction) Eugene, MO 65032. Call 573.498.0110 or visit online at www.RedfieldGolf.com.  Rolling Hills Country Club Rolling Hills established in 1957. It features mature Ozark woodlands lining Bermuda fairways. Playing 6,590 yards as a par 71 course. On-site amenities include a driving range, pro shop and snack bar. Location: Northeast of Versailles, one mile north of the junction Hwy 5 and Hwy 52 at 13986 Country Club Road, Versailles, MO. For tee times, call the pro shop at 573.378.5109 or visit online at www.playrollinghills.com.

The 18th at Old Kinderhook with the new Lodge in background adds to the scenery of one of Missouri’s greatest par 5 finishing holes. 227-yard par 3 with a long carry over a cove of the Lake. It’s owned by The Lodge of Four Seasons, which offers affordable stay and play packages. Location: Approximately two miles from Business Hwy 54 on State Rd HH across from The Lodge. State Rd. HH, Lake Ozark, MO. Call 573.365.8532 or visit www.4seasonsresort.com.  The Club at Old Kinderhook The five-star “Must Play” golf course at the Lake. Spectacular vistas, elevations, and a championship layout meander through the Ozark hills. Tom Weiskopf has designed another masterpiece in Old Kinderhook, turning the rolling topography, rock waterfalls, and flowering trees into one of the Midwest's finest courses. Each hole captures a special aspect of the terrain and offers an experience to delight golfers of all skill levels. It doesn’t get much better than Old Kinderhook. It opened “The Lodge,” a new resort-style hotel, in 2015 and now offers very affordable “Stay & Play” packages. Now, you literally step out of the hotel and onto the first tee. Location: Go to Lake Rd 54-80, 1/2 mile to the gated entrance. Lake Rd 54-80, Camdenton, MO. Pro Shop: 573.346.4444 or visit www.oldkinderhook.com.

 The Cove Golf Course Todd Clark renovated this original Robert Trent Jones, Sr. layout with remodeled greens and bunkers in 2008. It’s extremely challenging from the 6,567-yard blue tees, providing true “Lake” ambiance and scenic beauty on virtually every hole. Of particular significance is No. 4, an intimidating TeeTimesMagazine.com

 The Oaks at Margaritaville Lake Resort Designed by Bruce Devlin and Robert Von Hagge, this championship layout, carved out of natural forest and hilly Ozark terrain, places a premium on accurate shots and strategic course management. The Oaks has rolling Bermuda fairways and well-protected target greens that require good tee shot placement and club selection. Water hazards come into play on 11 holes, and more than 60 white silica sand bunkers guard the fairways and greens. Location: Margaritaville Resort, State Rd KK, approximately two miles off Hwy 54. State Rd KK, Osage Beach, MO. Pro Shop: 573.348.8521, www.tan-tar-a.com.  The Ridge Golf Course Originally Seasons Ridge Golf Course, it opened in 1991 and was designed by Ken Kavanaugh. Shangri-La Resort

It isn’t Just for Golf Anymore! Editorial by Mike Williams

n 2021, Oklahoma’s premier golf destination will be the ultimate destination for a lot more than golf! Construction is nearing completion on a new $10.5 million activity park adjacent to Shangri-La Resort’s luxury resort hotel at Grand Lake, OK. Best known for its 27-holes of Championship golf and a luxury 119-room resort hotel, Shangri-La is continuing to expand amenities to provide the ultimate year-round destination. The new activity park, opening in April 2021, will include a new racquet club facility with outdoor tennis courts, pickleball courts, basketball, sand volleyball, fire pits, a fishing pond, an outdoor event area, and a mini-Fenway Park replica that will offer WIFFLE BALL, providing fun for kids of all ages.

weather. Currently, Shangri-La has 9,000 square feet of meeting space with a variety of outdoor venues for weddings and events. “We are expanding the recreational offerings to add to our popular championship golf course,” said Shangri-La President and CEO Barry Willingham. “We are also focused on providing more indoor entertainment options for our members and our hotel guests to make Shangri-La an attractive year-round destination for business groups and families alike.”

Another important outdoor feature is a replica of one of the original anchors from the USS Oklahoma battleship, which was the inspiration for the new activity park’s name — “The Anchor.” The ship’s anchor will stand proudly across from the new facility and display the names of the 429 personnel who served our country on this vessel when it was attacked at Pearl Harbor in 1941. The outdoor facilities are just part of the picture, though. The 11,000-square-foot indoor facility will feature Hologate state of the art virtual reality golf simulators, shooting simulators, escape room games, arcade games, pop-a-shot basketball, billiards and ping-pong tables, shuffleboard, darts, a plethora of sporting event video screens, and the most inviting indoor-outdoor bar and lounge on Grand Lake. The golf simulators include the ability for golfers to play all 27 holes of Shangri-La’s legendary course. There’s no reason to worry about sudden inclement weather for golfers. If the weather inhibits outdoor play, the entire Shangri-La course will still be available for play indoors! The Activity Park construction will bring the total investment of the resort facility to more than $75 million since Eddy Gibbs purchased the property in 2010. This addition of facilities at “The Anchor” will enable the resort to offer corporations more indoor space after their meeting sessions for team building activities, entertainment, and extreme year-round enjoyment without being impacted by 36

February 2021

Shangri-La’s hotel facilities are busy throughout the year with 119 luxury hotel rooms, 9,000 square feet of convention and meeting space, a full-service medical spa, fitness center, steam room and sauna, an indoor pool, and a sprawling 6,500-square-foot outdoor resort pool with splash pad, tanning ledge, hot tub, food and beverage services, and fire pits. The resort also offers casual family dining food and beverage services at Doc’s Bar & Grill, fine dining at The Summit Restaurant and Buffalo Bar, alfresco lakeside food and beverage service at the seasonally operated Eddy’s Lakeside Bar, and a relaxed atmosphere at the Monkey Grind coffee shop, a proud purveyor of Starbucks coffee. At the full-service Shangri-La Marina located adjacent to the resort hotel, Sail Grand also offers yacht charters, boat and personal watercraft rentals, and parasailing adventures.
