From The Editor Bill Cromwell, Editor-in-Chief TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE™ Magazine

I

The State of Golf in 2020

hope you were able to play plenty of golf this year, and let’s all hope the weather is kinder to us this winter than last. Wow, last winter was cold! I can’t take that again this year — I gotta golf!

I recently read a golf marketer’s article that stated, “The business of golf has dramatically changed, waiting lists have vanished, memberships worldwide are in sharp decline and the number of new courses opening pales in comparison to the number of courses closing. Participation, depending on who you believe, is down 10-20% in less than a decade and online booking engines have changed the game.” IF one chooses to believe that, it’s quite disturbing for all of us — golfers and course operators alike. The article went on to say, “Discounting has significantly lowered the price of the average round. Meanwhile, the cost of running a course has increased just as dramatically. The customer too, especially the millennial, is looking for something different than the 1980’s version of a club ‘experience’ and that most clubs are hanging onto for grim death.” I agree that the golf market in our region has drastically changed since our first publication 19 years ago. But, do not agree, “… that most clubs are hanging onto for grim death,” at least not in the Missouri/Kansas regions. In fact, in my conversations, several local course operators reported an increase in rounds played this year. Certainly, the changes over the last 19 years do include online bookings that did not exist 19 years ago and with it sometimes steep discounts. However, golf is a business and like any business discounting is a part of marketing to consumers. Golfers (consumers) have effectively been conditioned to shop for discounts like every consumer. The trend I see, particularly with the millennial generation, is golfers want “added value, increased elements of entertainment, speed of play” and will generally play fewer rounds monthly. Senior golfers shop for the best deal (and course conditions) because they want to play golf four-to-five times per week. So, for golf marketers, unlike many businesses, there are wide age variations of consumers for its product — a golf course. Perhaps 2020 will usher in new creative marketing approaches to increase golf participation locally and worldwide. As a consumer, you can help course operators by telling them what you think of their course and business operations. Don’t simply hop in the car and leave after your round. Go inside, ask for the manager or head pro, and let them know what you think — good or bad. In doing so, you are helping that business develop effective marketing plans, hear what they are doing well or what could be improved to gain your repeat business. I have the feeling; they will like hearing from you.

Just in Time for Christmas

H

Editorial by Bill Cromwell

ere are a few of my top picks for gifts, game improvement and fun stuff every golf can use.

Chippo — New Golf Game for The Beach, Backyard, Tailgate, Clubhouse, Office and Man-Cave!

Golf Swing Trainer — Tempo Perfection

This extremely useful training tool helps the golfer to keep a nice tempo in their swing and develop good swing rhythm. Many golfers use this training-aid on the driving range and as warm-up before a golf round. It’s also perfect for when you feel that you’ve lost your tempo and need to regain it. The Orange Whip Trainer, the longest and most popular version, the Orange Whip trainers that provides the greatest feedback for tempo, balance, and swing plane training. Designed for men and taller women ● Simulates driver motion ● Recommended to maximize core fitness and flexibility ● Physically demanding and helps tempo ● Length: 47in. Weight: 1.75 lbs. The Orange Whip Trainer is $109 at www.orangewhipgolf.com. • Similar product: The SKLZ Gold Flex Trainer $79.99 at www.sklz.implus.com.

Eye Putt Pro

One of my favorites is the Eye Putt Pro. It teaches you repeatable muscle memory putting stroke in two simple steps. 1) Level the putter. (Teaching you to square the putter-face.) 2) See your eyes square in the mirror. (Teaching you proper set up with your eyes over the ball.) This immediate visual feedback positions your eyes over the golf ball and levels your putter flat to the putting green. It also relaxes your hands below your shoulders creating a proper spine angle and balanced weight distribution. Bottom line, you make more putts! Order your Eye Putt Pro gift for $19.95 (it’s worth every cent) at www.eyeputtpro.com and drop a few more Birdies in 2020. 10

Chippo is the viral new golf game for the beach, backyard, tailgate, office, and clubhouse. A patented, mind-blowing mash-up of golf and traditional backyard games! It combines the old fashioned, beerslugging, tailgate-dominating, sunshine-basking goodness of games like cornhole with the side-betting beauty of golf. Chippo is the only backyard game where you can work over your buddies, while working on your short game —revolutionary! Chippo includes: ● 2x Chippo target boards ● 2x heavy duty chipping mats ● 6x high-density foam balls by AlmostGolf Retails at $189.95 at www.chippogolf.com, and Oh, Free Shipping in the U.S.A.

Women’s HJ Gripper Grey Camo Golf Glove The gripper ladies golf glove by HJ Golf come in bold, fashion colors and Camo! Not sure why one would need Camo for golf, but what the heck — go for it! HJ gloves are very comfortable and breathable, so they don’t feel hot in warm weather. The wristband wicks moisture away from your skin and the Cabretta leather palm provides good grip preventing your clubs from slipping. The gloves are available in LEFT Hand only (to be worn by right-handed golfers) in sizes Small, through X-Large. These gloves run small; the company suggests ordering one size larger than you typically wear. Ladies HJ Gripper Grey Camo Golf Glove retails at $19.95 and is on sale now for only $10.79 at www.pinkgolftees.com.

Happy Shopping!

The Midwest Section PGA’s Players of the Year Working at a course near you.

by Ann E. Butenas, Contributing Writer

T

he awards season was in full swing for the Midwest Section PGA this past October, and at its annual Commemoration of Awards banquet, many Section members were honored for their outstanding contribution to the Section and the game. Among those honors were the prestigious Player of the Year awards. The Section recognized four outstanding players at the ceremony: Mack Duke, Chris Mabry, Kristen Samp, and Jeff Sedorcek. The achievement of these awards is quite an accomplishment, and the accolades do not come without some proven golf prowess.

Duke credits his success with respect to this award to his participation in and earning enough points from four events: Stableford at Oakwood Country Club; 36 Hole Stroke Play at Firekeeper; Assistant Championship at Mules National; and a win at the end of the season at the Midwest PGA Stroke Play Championship. However, he did play in 15 events total throughout the season.

“These awards are given based on performance throughout the year,” explained Shannon Johnson, COO of the Section. “These are based on a point system for each qualifying tournament. Each tournament has its own classification, which determines the points obtained. The person with the most points at the end of the year wins the award. There are three systems comprising the points systems: Major, Minor, and For Fun/Participation.”

“As my good friend and fellow PGA professional Rick Schultz likes to say, ‘Mack Duke is a player,’” quipped Demo. “Mack is fairly new to the Section but without question is a champion and, in my opinion, will win several Player of the Year awards throughout his career.”

“We are truly blessed to have many great players in the Midwest Section PGA,” said Brad Demo, Executive Director of the Section, who sang the praises of these honorees.

“I have always been excited to play golf, especially tournament golf,” added Duke. “That excitement has always helped me play well, especially with a limited practice schedule.”

Some players are not new to the honor of Player of the Year, and Chris Mabry, (photo on left) Head Golf Professional at Lake Quivira Country Club, is one of those players. “This is the second time Chris has won the award, and without hesitation, in my opinion, it won’t be his last,” asserted Demo. Receiving the Player of the Year award has great meaning for Mabry. “I became a PGA Member in 2016, and this is the second time I have won the award,” he reflected. “It feels great to bring it back to Lake Quivira. I was fortunate enough to win four tournaments this year and not finish outside the Top 5 in any individual Professional event.”

Mack Duke, Assistant Golf Professional (above) at Mission Hills Country Club, humbly accepted the award but, also appreciates the many doors his competitive spirit has opened for him with respect to deepening his association with the Section. “Being the Midwest Section Associate Player of the Year means a lot to me, mainly because of the relationships I was able to make in the process,” Duke reflected. “Being new to the Section, I wanted to play as many events as I could in order to meet as many new faces as possible.” 12

December 2019

TEE TIMES GOLF GUIDE

The Female Player of the Year award was given to Kristen Samp, Teaching Professional at Twin Oaks Golf facility. There are only four events throughout the year that give points for this award. This year’s Female Player of the Year, however, was based on just one tournament. Playing in the Prairie Invitational Tournament this year, Samp scored enough points to take away the Female Player of the Year Award and was pleased with the results. “I’m glad I was able to participate in the Prairie Invitational and give props to the KCGA for their efforts in putting on such an upscale event,” said Samp. “I have known Kristen since she was a teenager,” said Demo. “She was a great player in high school, college, and now professionally. It is obvious she can play the game, but she is also a wonderful golf instructor and friend.”

To quote the late John Wooden, former head coach of the University of California basketball team, “Winning takes talent; to repeat takes character.” Undoubtedly the members of the Midwest Section PGA will continue to prove they have character. 

Spend The Day Playing 3 Different Courses

“Jeff is an all-around amazing PGA professional, and we are fortunate to have him in the Section,” said Demo. “At 50 years of age, he now qualifies for the senior division and has dominated as this year’s Senior Player of the Year.”

Course

9-Hole Course

As the recipient of the Senior Player of the Year Award, Jeff Sedorcek, Head Professional at Fred Arbanas Golf Course (photo below), attributes his success to winning the first senior stroke play event of the year. “That helped motivate me to stay focused on playing well in the events that would give me the most points to achieve this award,” Sedorcek noted. “This is a great honor for me to win this award. I play in most of the events and earned points by winning in the senior division four times and finishing second three times and third place twice.

Golf’s Most Debatable Discussion,

Flagstick In Or Out? The Test Results Are In!

T

o leave the pin in or take it out — that’s been the golf question of the year in 2019. Personally, leaving the pin in was logistically the way to go. Instead of taking aim at a four-inch hole, a flagstick provides an extra line of sight.

Most surprisingly, most of the guys I play with regularly agreed. I had assumed that senior golfers who had played 40-50-60 years would be resistant to change. They weren’t. Most rounds were played without the flag ever leaving the cup except for removing successful putts. While without any proof, it seemed like rounds were played a little faster. In fact, friend Jerry Reid, who plays in Sunflower Hills’ jam-packed Senior League on a weekly basis, surmised that leaving the pin in cut as much as 30 minutes off a league round. Probably a bit overstated, but four-hour rounds were more common even with an average of 28-30 foursomes each Wednesday. Regardless, it was with great excitement that friend Paul Palmer 16

steered me to an article researching the question “Pin in or pin out?” It was written by Joe Stansberry in the Minnesota Tee Times Magazine. “Of all the rules changes for 2019, the most controversial and I believe the least understood is the ability to keep the pin in while you putt,” wrote Stansberry. “Dave Pelz wrote earlier this year and Bryson Dechambeau proclaimed it should be left in while Dustin Johnson and Patrick Reed will leave it out. Justin Thomas feels like he is cheating. I was OK with the new look of the pin but wanted to find out more scientifically.” In Stansberry’s words, here’s what he found:

► Purpose “The purpose of this study was to gain an understanding of the resulting effect that exists when a golfer leaves the flag in vs. flag out during a round of golf. This was done to ultimately determine the make vs. miss percentage and the resulting distance of putts that missed. It was done by mygolfspy.com.”

► Research In the initial research, it was found that:

► SPEED No matter the distance of the putt or whether it is downhill, sidehill, uphill, or flat, it is the speed at which the ball arrives at the hole which affects the results.

► COR The coefficient of restitution (COR) of the flagstick (stiffness of the flag) can impact the results. The stiffer the flag, the less energy it absorbs from the ball. There are mainly two flag types. Flag type No. 1 is less rigid and absorbs more energy from the ball on contact. Flag No. 2 is more rigid and absorbs less energy from the ball on contact. The research tests: ● The two most common types of flagsticks. ● Rolled putts with pin in and out. ● Both center strikes and off-center strikes on the flagstick. ● To guarantee the most reliable results, a putting machine called the Perfect Putter was used. ● Each test was run at three different speeds. ● Tested with putts that would roll 3 feet, 6 feet and 9 feet past the hole. ● Collected the resulting distance of missed putts. ● Recorded both the make and miss percentage from all putts at all distances.

► Observations

● Leaving the flagstick in is always an advantage vs. taking the flagstick out. ● Leaving the flagstick in also keeps the ball closer to the hole on misses. ● The less rigid flagstick has the highest make percentage and least distance after a miss. ● The most rigid flagstick is still an advantage for both makes and misses vs. flagstick out. ● Dead center strikes on the flagstick provided the best make percentage while leaving the shortest remaining distance to the hole on misses. ● Off-center strikes on the flag still provided a higher make percentage vs. flagstick out. ● While the advantage is not as significant, leaning the stick forward (toward the golfer) is still an advantage vs. taking the flag out.

Alan Hoskins three aces came within 10 months 3 days. The first (above) on 12/16/17; second 9/25/18 and third (below) on 10/19/18 (less than a month after No. 2). As you can see the first and third came on frigid winter days — with the flagstick in the hole.

► Verdict Don’t let the tradition of pulling the flag out while you putt get in the way of shooting lower scores. Leave the pin in. “It’s one small step for golfers, one giant leap for golf.” “So, there you go, scientific proof that the pin in will save you a few shots,” concluded Stansberry. “My suggestion if you’re playing with a group of buddies and one person is adamant to have the pin out — compromise! Tell him or her that one round you will all putt with it in, then in the next round you all putt with it out. Try it. You just might like it.”

Alan Hoskins, Golf Writer Lead Feature Writer since 2007

Lastly, all three of my Hole-In-One shots during 2017 and 2018 happened with the flagstick in the hole. Just say in’. TeeTimesMagazine.com

Both Bogie and Birdie (Jack Russell’s) are Bill & Victoria Cromwell’s spoiled children. Bogie, the oldest of our two magazine-mascots, is king of “his “castle and rules the household. Birdie is tiny, but she eats everything in sight, including rocks and golf balls. Birdie loves Bogie, but he is not fond of her profusely licking his face.

Top Changes Coming to Your Handicap Index Calculation for 2020 by Baile Stephenson, contributing KCGA writer

Y

our USGA Handicap Index might be changing in 2020. Here’s what you need to know about how it’s calculated.

1. New Minimum Number of Scores Required — to establish a Handicap Index, golfers will now only need a minimum of 54hole scores in their scoring record. This can be a combination of 9- and 18-hole scores. 2. Fewer Scoring Differentials Used — Your Handicap Index will be calculated based on the best eight of your last 20 scoring differentials. 3. Introducing the Playing Conditions Calculation (PCC) —

PCC will adjust scoring differentials when weather or course set up deviated from normal conditions and had a significant impact on a player’s performance for the day. The PCC will be simple and conservative in nature and will be adjusted in integer values (-1, +1, +2, etc.). It is also important to note that this calculation requires at least eight scores to be entered with a handicap index of 36.0 or below. It will be increasingly important that golfers post their scores on the same day of play for this calculation to be accurate. 4. Exceptional Scores Will Be Reduced — The Exceptional Score Reduction will reduce a player’s Handicap Index when the score is 7.0–10.0+ strokes below the Handicap Index at the time the round was played. The adjustment they will receive is either -1.0 or -2.0 strokes (see table below). This adjustment is made in addition to any reduction caused by the score being used in the updated eight of 20 calculation.

5. What is a Soft and Hard Cap? — The Cap procedure will limit the extreme upward movement of a Handicap Index within a 12-month period. The Soft Cap will suppress upward movement by 50% after a 3.0 stroke increase over the Low Handicap Index has been reached. The Hard Cap will restrict upward movement to 5.0 strokes over the Low Handicap Index. 6. Daily Revisions — Under the new World Handicap System (WHS), golfers should post their scores on the same day they played. Revisions will take place daily at midnight local time, after a golfer posts a score. Download the GHIN Mobile App for the easiest method of score posting.

These are just a few of the many changes coming in 2020. If you are interested in learning more, we would love to see you at one of our upcoming WHS Seminars. You can register for a seminar, watch videos, and find additional WHS Resources on the KCGA website at www.kansascitygolfer.com/whs-education. If you’d like to host a seminar at your club, have your golf professional email baile@kcgolf.org to schedule. 

Not 15. Was Hole 8 – Par 4 The November issue listed the winning hole for the October issue “Photo of The Month” as hole #15 at Fred Arbanas Golf Course. It was actually hole #8. This was our mistake — a typo. We made the correction to our online version of the November issue, and the published winner did guess hole #8 correctly. Our apologies for the confusion. Thank you to all readers who brought this error into question. It’s great to know that so many are keeping an eye on us and this fun contest. All the Best, Bill Cromwell.

Top 10 Things to Do to Get Better at Golf In The Off-Season by Courtney Mahon, LPGA

How To Get Better

I

t’s hard to believe that the 2019 golf season is coming to a close. After a short break, it will be time to prepare for the 2020 season. Here are the top ten things to do to get better in the offseason.

30 Minute Practice Sessions. Can you commit to 30 minutes of practice each week? Make the effort to get to the course once a week during the winter season. A good 30 minutes of FOCUSED practice can help keep you sharp through the winter months.

Take a Break. If you are one that plays or practices every day, make sure to take a little time off in the winter. Your mind and body need it!

Mirror Practice. Slowmotion swings in front of a mirror is a powerful exercise. The goal is to make extremely slow swings, 2 - 5 minutes per swing, to help the brain and body learn proper swing mechanics quickly and effectively.

Analyze the Year. Take some time to think about your 2019 season. Answering the following questions can help you assess your performance: What were your strengths? What were your top three weaknesses? How could your practice time be spent differently to enhance performance? Set Goals. The previous question should help you formulate your plan for the 2020 season. Start with a list of short term and long-term goals. Under each goal, describe how you plan to accomplish each one. Make Fitness a Priority. This is the time of year to start a weekly fitness routine. I highly recommend stretching or yoga every day. Flexibility is extremely important for many positions in the full swing. Be active this winter! Online Lessons. There is no better time to work on swing changes than the winter months. Online lessons typically include a swing analysis, appropriate drills, and a practice plan.
