Adobe Reader X Functional and Annotation Tools Annotation Tools Sticky Note Tool The sticky note tool allows you to place a sticky note directly on top of a PDF document to annotate it and give feedback on a specific document. At the top of the Adobe Reader page, you will see an icon that looks like a text bubble. Click on the icon and the cursor will change to look like the text bubble. Where ever you click on the PDF file, a sticky note will appear on the screen, allowing you to type in a note or comment that can then be saved for your own notetaking use, or distributed for collaboration with others. After typing in the comment, when you click off of the note, it is automatically a part of the document and you can refer back to it by clicking on the text bubble icon which will bring the note back up. Using the sticky note tool also keeps the time and date stamp as well as the user allowing you to see which comments were made and my whom. By clicking on the dropdown arrow beside the your name you can customize the sticky in the menu that comes up.
Highlighter Tool The highlighter tool allows you to highlight and save text as a part of a PDF document At the top of the Adobe Reader page, you will see an icon that looks like a highligher with a “T” beside it. Click on the icon and the cursor will change a text selection tool resembling the letter “I”. Whatever text you select will then be highlighted and become part of your document. When using these annotation tools, be sure to save the PDF to save these changes. If you want to keep a “clean” version of the PDF, be sure to “save as”.

Accessing the Annotations Adobe Reader makes it easy to access all annotations (sticky notes or highlighted text) by selecting the “Comment� button at the top of the screen. Clicking on that button will bring up all comments (signified by type) and includes the sticky note text in the sidebar on the right hand side. These notes become part of the document and will be accessible to anyone who uses Adobe Reader to open the document. These comments can then become part of a dialog where collaborators can delete, sort, or reply to a comment by right clicking on an individual comment in this list.
Save as Text If a PDF is not protected by the creator, one of the options that you have is to export the text of a pdf as a text file (.txt). This strips out all of the pictures and only keeps the unformatted text allowing you to manipulate it in different ways. Click on File Save As Text and you will be prompted to save that file as a .txt file.
Read Out Loud Another tool that Adobe Reader has is the ability to convert text to speech effectively reading a PDF document to you. You must first activate the Read Out Loud feature by selecting View Read Out Loud Activate Read Out Loud. Then you can go back into this same menu and choose to read a single page or to the end of the document. This same menu will also allow you to Stop, Pause, or Deactivate the Read Out Loud Feature as you need to. * These tools will work best with a PDF document created using a word processor, not a scanned document. www.mrbassonline.com
