We have been looking forward to this moment for quite some time, so we are incredibly pleased to finally reveal to you what we have been working on at Strøm for almost a year. We have invited some of the biggest, brightest and boldest stars on the electronic scene to join us at this year’s Strøm festival. It’s going to be a full week filled with love for electronic music. Some of the most upfront event makers, djs and booking agents in Copenhagen are helping schedule the artists and, if we may say so, they have struck gold. World famous wonder kids, local newcomers, international legends and even a few rookies will be playing everything from house, techno, hip hop, dubstep, acid, and juke, to moombathon and dancehall. Amongst many others, we will feature techno legend Richie Hawtin performing in the green surroundings of Enghaveparken, the genre-breaking Major Lazer’s live show at VEGA and local heroes, Kenton Slash Demon, who for the very first time will debut what 4

We can’t wait to share our love with you on August 20 TH - 26 TH

On Friday August 24th and Saturday August 25th, the green surroundings of Enghaveparken in central Copenhagen are transformed into a two-day long hot spot of open-air concerts – the festival climax. The lineup is always thrilling, and is proof positive how varied and inspiring electronic music truly is today. The lineup is curated by the lovely Pernille Krog Mogensen, Thomas Madvig, Kristian Kjøller, Thomas Knak, Åsmund Boye Kverneland, Linus Ellesøe and Rosa Batzer.

All (except one) are free to attend, but please arrive well in advance because seating is limited. High End Tentacles and Moremax Studio are graciously providing new and vintage studio equipment as well as synthesizers from Moog Music, Eventide, Dave Smith Instruments and more.

ST RØ M E V E N T S

From the earliest days of the festival, it has been a top priority for Strøm to support local event organizers and promoters of electronic music by encouraging joint ventures and collaborations. This provides a plethora of amazing opportunities and events, while also promoting the festival all over Copenhagen.

Apple provides the hardware support.

This year Strøm features concerts, raves and special events taking place at many unique locations and venues, including nightclubs, open-air rooftops, beautiful churches, derelict industrial compounds and even by the harbour.

Have you thought of starting a label? Wondered how to take charge and get the music you love out yourself? The majority of Danish record companies with a focus on electronic music are started by a burning desire to publish and release their own music. A DIY approach that largely characterizes the entire electronic music scene both in Denmark and abroad. For this event Copenhagen electronic music label Tartelet Records will provide some insights from their own experiences of competing in the busy world of independent music taking in both the practical and the philosophical considerations involved.

In one of the most remarkable church rooms in Copenhagen the well-known electronica artist Spejderrobot, and the ambient-oriented Starchild #2 will perform together in an improvised, musical dialogue, or perhaps more of a ‘battle’. Neither uses laptop computers, which means the music is performed on the spot – quite a unique approach in electronica today. The performance will also integrate the skills of a VJ, who will create visual improvisations on the ceiling of the church correlating with the music. The church benches will be removed and substituted with cushions, blankets and mattresses. The audience is invited to bring their own cushions for optimal comfort.

STRØM & BIBZOOM

BIBZOOM Summertime is festival time and one of the year’s highlights to celebrate electronic music is undeniably Copenhagen’s Strøm festival. Since 2007 the crew behind Strøm has summer after summer filled the Danish capital with exciting electronic events at venues, in clubs, on the streets and in the parks. But who are the people that make music loving people wiser and make Copenhagen one of Europe’s strongholds for electronic music. Bibzoom has met up with the curators behind this year’s Strøm programme to hear more about what they are looking forward to see. On the following pages you can see which artists from this year’s program, the curators advise you not to miss and you can check out the latest episode of Ultra FM :Transmissions of Exploratory Music, which this month interviews four of the curators and presents tracks from some of the artists who are playing at Strøm. Enjoy!

ABOUT BIBZOOM Bibzoom is the Danish libraries digital music service. Bibzoom has all the music you love and ten million other songs. It’s completely free, and provides a lot of articles, reviews, movies, culture and listening guides similar to this. The Bibzoom listening guides are created by Bibzoom and the Danish public libraries.

Major Lazer was started by the two producers and djs Diplo and Switch who met each other, when they were both working with M.I.A. Stylistically, Major Lazer is as complex and diverse as the group’s long line of featuring artists. The Major Lazer formula is often made up of dancehall and reggae and spiced with the style and mood from moombahton, hardstyle, cumbia, mainfloor house, indie and crunk. Expect wild laser sounds, alarms and tropical beats played with an energetic attitude that makes you want to crowd surf and take your shirt off.

Henrik Schwarz is one of the most exciting names on the house scene right now. Through his wild musical experiments the progressive German artist is constantly pushing the limits of house music, renewing the genre in the process. Thanks to his originality and ferocity on stage, Henrik Schwarz is one of the most sought-after performers in house. Weekend after weekend, thousands of people gather to experience his overwhelmingly hyped shows. It can only be great.

Octave One is the closest you get to a real classic house act. The duo have released music for more than 20 years and besides being one of the best suppliers of straight up Detroit techno and house, they are also a sublime live act. They have been around the block more than a couple of times, but they are only getting better by age.

LV’s sound is completely unique and it contributes with a rethinking of the constantly mutating British bass scene. According to the leading music blogs and magazine, their debut record Routes from 2011 was one of best albums that year. They have yet to visit Denmark, so what better occasion than Strøm? We are incredibly proud to present one of the most interesting electronic names right now.

EMIKA

DNT EL

I very much look forward to seeing the Czech-born artist Emika who had her musical growth on the exciting British electronic scene around the Bristol area. Emika possesses a strange melodic talent. Her universe is dark and well produced without being too nice. She experiments without disappearing into geeky tricks and manages to provide almost pop melodies in her dark sound universe.

James ‘Jimmy’ Tamborello from L.A. is a personal hero through many years. Albums like Life is full of possibilities from his Dntel-alias and Space Settings released under his other alias Headset perch high on the list of this writer’s all time favourite releases. Both albums are fragile and simple constructed with a balanced crossover of a lot of different genres. At Strøm Dntel will be focusing on 4/4 ambient techno-house oriented tracks from his recently released album Aimlessness. With a more upbeat sample patchwork he is now moving in a new directing that can be traced back to the path that Fourtet and Gold Panda have been going, however it is most definitely still Dntel’s own.

Silas Moldenhawer and Jonas Kenton aka Kenton Slash Demon are undoubtedly some of the most promising talents on the Danish electronic scene. Even though they have only a few releases behind them, they have already established themselves nationally and internationally. Their live show is notoriously known for being one of the best parties around and is therefore a must see at this year’s Strøm.

“It is surprises like Ranglekolds that puts an end to the critics’ cynicism and rebuilds the faith in music”. This is what Danish newspaper Politiken wrote about Esben Andersen alias Rangleklods’ debut album Beekeeper. Compositional the Berlin-based Dane moves in the borderland between catchy pop and boundary-pushing electronic sound experiments.
