Para conmemorar el día del Libro y con la idea de fomentar la lectura de textos en varias lenguas, presentamos en este boletín las adquisiciones que en los últimos meses el departamento de Inglés ha propuesto a la biblioteca. Tenéis a vuestra disposición varias novelas que están siendo un éxito, adaptadas como series que se pueden ver on line; hemos adquirido los ejemplares en inglés junto con la versión en castellano. Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? (retitled Blade Runner: Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep? in some later printings) is a science fiction novel by American writer Philip K. Dick, first published in 1968. The novel is set in a post-apocalyptic San Francisco, where Earth's life has been greatly damaged by nuclear global war. Most animal species are endangered or extinct from extreme radiation poisoning, so that owning an animal is now a sign of status and empathy, an attitude encouraged towards animals. The book served as the primary basis for the 1982 film Blade Runner, and many elements and themes from it were used in its 2017 sequel Blade Runner 2049. The main plot follows Rick Deckard, a bounty hunter who is tasked with "retiring" (i.e. killing) six escaped Nexus-6 model androids, while a secondary plot follows John Isidore, a man of sub-par IQ who aids the fugitive androids. In connection with Deckard's mission, the novel explores the issue of what it is to be human. Unlike humans, the androids are said to possess no sense of empathy. Una agradable y ligera descarga eléctrica, activada por la alarma automática del Climatizador de Ánimo Penfield, despierta a Rick Deckard, que deja la cama ataviado con su pijama multicolor y apremia a su esposa a que reajuste su climatizador para sentir deseos de levantarse. Deckard es un cazarrecompensas, trabaja para el Departamento de Policía de San Francisco retirando androides de las calles. Ataviado con su modelo Ajax de Calzón de Plomo Mountibank contra el polvo radiactivo, se encamina al trabajo, descubre que su superior está en el hospital con una herida de láser en el espinazo y recibe la orden de perseguir al nuevo androide que ha podido ser el responsable, el Nexus-6, de cerebro altamente sofisticado. Offred is a Handmaid in the Republic of Gilead. El cuento de la criada, que no ha dejado de tener lectores apasionados desde su aparición, es la obra más emblemática de Atwood y, en palabras de Publishers Weekly, «merece un lugar de honor entre las selectas obras de literatura anticipatoria que han conseguido formar parte de la tradición cultural moderna», junto a 1984 y Un mundo feliz. En los últimos meses, tras la llegada de Donald Trump a la presidencia de Estados Unidos, ha resurgido con fuerza el interés del gran público por esta novela escrita a principios de los ochenta, en la que Atwood anticipó con llamativa premonición una amenaza latente en el mundo de hoy: los peligros inherentes al terrorismo islámico.
Takeshi Kovacs, mercenario y antiguo emisario colonial, había sido juzgado, condenado y almacenado. Pero lo transmiten a la Tierra y lo reaniman en una funda de policía a instancias de un millonario…que pide que investigue su reciente asesinato. En un futuro en el que se ha vencido a su muerte, el crimen toma derroteros insospechados. Una trama adictiva de la que se espera su próxima adaptación como serie en Netflix.
OPINIONES ALUMNOS Un oscuro viaje Wind Gap te hará llegar hasta los límites de tu sensibilidad, dejando a un lado las emociones racionales y adentrándose en la parte más oscura de la mente humana: los trastornos, los recuerdos perturbadores y las relaciones enfermizas. Tendrás que hacer pausas para evitar que te confundas y te afecte demasiado, aunque de igual forma te impactará, quedándose en tu cabeza durante días. No apto para sensibles.
Érika(1ºBach) El cuento de la criada es un libro que cuenta la historia de cómo, al encontrarse al borde de la extinción, la sociedad puede llegar a cambiar drásticamente. Sin importar la ética o la moralidad someten a la población bajo sus reglas diciendo que es lo mejor para ella. La protagonista vive ese cambio, y su degradación de ciudadana libre a propiedad de una familia como madre de alquiler forzada. Relata cómo se les trata y cómo viven, el lado oscuro de esa sociedad, mientras intenta no perder la cordura ni la esperanza de volver a ver a su familia. Es una historia directa, dura a veces, que no te promete un final feliz. Lucía Galdo(1ºBach) 3RW puede parecer un título atractivo y prometedor que aborda el tema del suicidio juvenil...pero realmente decepciona. La línea narrativa no puede ser más trivial aunque el autor se esfuerce en complicarla al escribirla desde el punto de vista de dos personas, Hannah y Clay. Las voces narrativas se alternan e intercalan en los lugares más ridículos haciendo que el lector pierda el hilo de la historia. El personaje de Hannah resulta excesivamente melodramático, lanzando acusaciones contra el mundo y grabando su mensaje para hacérselo llegar a aquellos a los que pretende hacer sentir culpables. Es una historia aburrida y el personaje narcisista de la adolescente no ha conseguido que empatice con ella. Raquel Mateos (profesora Inglés)
