ur climate is changing. Global warming, the increase in world temperatures due to a greenhouse effect from the burning of fossil fuels, is not a problem for the future. It is happening now, especially in the Arctic and in the Antarctic Peninsula, where the ice is melting. The melting of the ice has terrible effects on the wildlife: especially polar bears in the Arctic and penguins in Antarctica are facing a serious decline in population. The effects of global warming can threaten the survival of those animals. According to Antarctic Penguins and Climate Change, a report by the World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the Antarctic Peninsula is warming five times faster than the average rate of global warming. “The warming climate means warmer, wetter air and too much snow at the wrong time of year,” says Dr Lara Hansen, Chief Scientist of WWF’s Global Climate Change Program. “Penguins have to wait for snow to melt and they are breeding later – much too late,” she added. Dr. Hansen believes what is happening to the penguins is a disaster. The United Nations Climate Conference is now happening in Bali, Indonesia. Negotiations over a new agreement on global warming are the central focus. The European Union is pushing for an agreement that contains specific limits on the amount of pollutants that can be released into the environment by automobiles, factories, and power plants. The U.S. delegation refuses to enter into such an agreement at this time, and believes more negotiation is needed. Uses of the Present Continuous O Present Continuous é usado basicamente para expressar uma ação que está acontecendo no momento em que se fala: It’s 9 o’clock now. I am writing to you from New York. Também é usado para expressar uma ação que está ocorrendo na atualidade, mas não necessariamente no momento em que se fala: I am taking a course in “The Effects of Climate Change”. Além de indicar ações no presente, o Present Continuous também pode ser usado para indicar ações futuras, expressando uma intenção, um plano, ou compromisso de praticá-las. Essas duas espécies, simpáticos ícones da luta pela preservação ambiental, “astros” de filmes e documentários de grande sucesso, têm em comum o mesmo culprit (the cause of something bad happening), o mesmo culpado pela ameaça à sua sobrevivência. Qual é, então, a causa do problema que ameaça pinguins e ursos-polares, entre tantos outros animais que vivem nos dois polos do planeta?
