FRESH FOCUS AHEAD FOR RED ANGUS JUNIOR MEMBERS “It is an exciting time to be a member of the Junior Red Angus Association of America. Across the nation, we have seen unprecedented growth in the interest in Red Angus genetics and growth in our organization. Now is the time to get involved and take advantage of the opportunities to prepare yourself to impact the future.

Five Strategic Focus Areas of the Board: As a board, we strategically focus on the following areas to improve and maximize your membership experience.
•State Leadership Relations – Establishing communication with state advisors, junior presidents, and state representatives. •Fund Development – Generating funding to support junior opportunities and sponsorships. •External Partner Development – Building relationships with industry partners and stakeholders. •Member Engagement – Improving strategies for increasing JRA member participation and input. •Commercial Member Development – Establishing methods for commercial producer engagement.

KACEY KOESTER PRESIDENT REGION B DIRECTOR Kacey Koester is a 19-yearold college sophomore who resides in Steele, North Dakota, and attends North Dakota State University where she is majoring in Animal Science. After completing the first year of her two-year term, she is very excited to serve another year on the board and act as president for the JRA. Kacey grew up raising registered Red Angus and her family markets 18-month- old fall-born bulls through their annual production sale. In high school, she was very active in 4-H, FFA, sports and various other leadership roles. In college, she stays busy with the Saddle & Sirloin club as well as the Judging Club. She is proud to be serving as one of the Region 2 directors and cannot wait to meet more junior members.
GENNA VANWYE FIRST VICE PRESIDENT REGION C DIRECTOR Genna VanWye of Atlanta, Illinois is in her second year serving on the board of directors and she is excited to see what the year has in store. Genna is a 18- year- old college freshman; she graduated from Olympia High School and is attending Iowa State University, majoring in Animal Science. Genna grew up on a registered Red Angus cow/calf and commercial operation. In high school Genna was involved in FFA, National Honor Society, Student Council, Key Club, Student Bank Board, Class Board, Freshman Mentor Program, Softball, Volleyball, 4-H, and church activities. Genna plans on being involved in several cattle and agriculture oriented clubs in the coming year. Genna is most excited to meet more junior members and to help plan junior events.
JOSEPH GROCE SECOND VICE PRESIDENT REGION C DIRECTOR Joseph Groce is a 21-yearold college Junior who attends North Carolina A&T State University where he is studying Animal Science with a concentrate in Industry. He lives in Lexington, North Carolina where he has a small herd of registered Red Angus, Black Angus, and Herefords, along with a small herd of feeder steers in which he sells the meat to restaurants. While maintaining and showing cattle, Joseph has also been very active in FFA, 4-H, and special needs shows in which he has showed with his friend Emily for 9 straight years. Serving his second year on the National Board as second vice president, Joseph is very excited to meet many new Juniors who have the same mindset as him!
ROYCE MCPHEE-BAYHA REGION A DIRECTOR Royce McPhee-Bayha is a 4th generation cattle rancher that lives on 350 head mother cow Purebred Red Angus operation. At just over 18, Royce has been a heavily involved showman since he began his showing career for the first time at the Red Western classic at just 8 years old. Royce currently owns a herd of 24 mother cows, and continues to focus on raising performance Red Angus. He has successfully consigned bulls and females to various bull tests and consignment sales across the country. He also sells yearling bulls and heifers at his family’s annual sale in September. Royce looks forward to his first year as a National Junior Red Angus Board member, and he is excited to meet new members of the JRA.
SAVANNAH HOWARD REGION C DIRECTOR
The Junior Red Angus Association of America focuses on equipping and preparing all JRA stakeholders to be leaders, innovators, stewards, and advocates for the Red Angus breed, the beef industry, and agriculture.
Savannah Howard is 18 years old and from Shelby, NC. She is a graduate of Crest High School. This fall she attending North Carolina State University. Savannah plans to double major in

National Junior Red Angus Show
Events planned for November 12-13, 2016 at the NAILE, Louisville Exhibit cattle and interact with other breeders throughout the country at the national show which rotates each year between five regional locations (National Western Stock Show, Fort Worth Stock Show, Northern International Livestock Exposition, North American International Livestock Exposition, and the Iowa State Fair). Activities specifically designed to connect and highlight junior members will take place November 12 and 13. On Saturday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m., the
Announcing Live | WiRED Tracking EPDs in Action
The junior board is excited about a unique opportunity to explore EPDs over the next three years in a project featuring the progeny of Penny, a Gelbvieh cow flushed to selected Red Angus sires with EPDs on the high end of the bell curve as well as others found on the low end of the curve in the breed. The goal of the project is to isolate the genetic differences of the bulls and demonstrate EPDs through evaluating two sets of calves from birth through harvest (25 head per sire group). The tracking of these progeny will be a platform for integrated EPD education and exploration throughout the upcoming Junior Red Angus activities and events.
Penny will provide a living labratory for how Red Angus EPDs function and see the results.

Gain a better understanding of EPDs during an educational workshop led by Harold Bertz, RAAA’s Commercial Marketing Program Coordinator and engage in another fun workshop to learn more about Junior Red Angus Association events and offerings. Connect with other junior members at the social in the Red Angus stalls starting at 3 p.m. Saturday while enjoying a sweet RED treat from the Junior Red Angus board. Young Stockman Program: January 5-7, 2017 Develop beef production knowledge and skills as part of this hands-on program designed to equip the next generation of stockmen. Held in conjunction with the Red Angus show and activities at the National Western Stock Show in Denver, the schedule is designed to make this a great educational opportunity for both exhibitors and non-exhibitors. This year’s event will focus on reproduction as we visit a genetics business, dissect reproductive tracts, design rations to optimize reproductive performance, discuss EPDs and more. The Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship is available for the Young Stockman’s Program. Registration and Travel Scholarship Applications are due December 1.
Round-Up 2017 Heads To Iowa; Dates Set For June 28-July 1 Build friendships, gain industry knowledge and compete for awards through this summer event that combines agriculture tours, educational programs, the JRA annual meeting and fun! This year’s event will focus on innovative technology and advancements in the livestock industry as we head out of Sioux Falls to travel throughout southeastern South Dakota and northwestern Iowa. One of the most anticipated stops is an in-depth look at Trans Ova Genetics. Three program and travel scholarship award opportunities for Round-Up are available: Merit Award, Heather Presser Memorial Scholarship, and the Commercial Cattleman’s Scholarship. Registration and Travel Scholarship Applications will be available March 1st and due May 1. Competitive Events Four national contests with junior and senior divisions are held in conjunction with Round-Up: Agricultural Advocacy, Meat Animal

These challenges are designed to create a fun experience and allow you to build teamwork skills with juniors from all across the country. The top team is recognized and awarded at the banquet. Annual Meeting The JRA annual meeting is conducted during Round- Up. As a member, you will have the opportunity to take part in official business, elect the Junior Red Angus Board of Directors, and contribute your ideas in the program of activities review. If you want to further your involvement in the Red Angus breed, while having some fun and learning about the industry, Round-Up is a great program for you.

Expanding Member Horizons WIth Opportunities Intern Placement Program Gain exposure to various aspects of the beef industry as well as career development experience through an internship. The Red Angus Association has a list of breeders and industry partners who are interested in hosting junior members for both formal and informal intern experiences. Visit the Junior Red Angus website for a list of potential host sites or contact the Junior Program Coordinator to find a site that matches your interests.
Canadian Exchange Program Explore the beef industry in Canada as a guest of the Canadian Angus Association for their national junior events. The JRA and the Canadian Junior Angus Association have an “exchange” between two juniors to attend the Canadian National Junior Showdown (July) or GOAL conference (February) and JRA Round Up. Rachel Davis, 2016 program participant, stated, “Any junior interested in traveling and learning about the livestock industry in another of the world should really jump at the chance to apply for this trip.
It truly is a unique experience.” Travel costs are covered by the program scholarship. Applications will be available March 1 and due May 1.
