HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine. As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to rise again, it is important that we recognize that many of our congregants are feeling more isolated than ever. Perhaps you know of members who would benefit from ongoing contact from a caring congregant or perhaps you wish for this outreach. If so, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. We continue to reach out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions. If you would like to help make these calls, please contact Marilyn or Evan.

If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Finally, we would like to welcome all the new members to our Beth Judea family. Thank you for recognizing CBJ as a warm and welcoming community. While we cannot congregate in person, there are many opportunities for you to become involved. If joining our committee is enticing, please call or mail us. Our email address is listed below. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. We wish each of you the best. Please stay safe and use all reasonable precautions to remain healthy. We are one family and need to take care of each other. Evan Rumack Marilyn Green-Rebnord

WAYS & MEANS

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood Sisterhood Shabbat was lovely! I hope that all of you who attended agreed. Zoom provided one thing we normally would not have, and that was coast to coast representation. As I flipped through the pages, it was so nice to see so many faces smiling back up at me. Thank you to Rabbi Ellen for joining us from New York and Fran Hildebrandt from Michigan, both representing Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. Thank you to Darlene Bikshorn for organizing and leading the service (from Florida). Thank you to all the Torah readers and service leaders- such a learned and willing group of women. Our synagogue is lucky to have all of you. For Judaica Arts we hosted a quilling event. Thank you to Marilyn Victor and Hannah Whitney-Stein for putting all the pieces together. Given that February was Women’s Heart Health month, Hannah provided us all with heart health information we should know and remember as specific to women. Paige Gitles, a friend of mine, was our instructor. I was looking so forward to doing the program remotely from her house, but Mother Nature decided that was not to be. (That was the evening we received between 5” and 18” of snow). Thank you to Paige and, her husband Chuck for rigging up a camera last minute and making it work. Our Mahjong tournament is coming up March 14th from 12:30pm to 4pm. It is not too late to join. We would love to have you. Please see the flyer for details. Renee Kaplan and Debbie Bender are our point people for the event. Thank you to both of you and your committee! There will be prizes and raffles. Come join the fun! April 18th will be our Torah Fund Event. By the time that you are reading this the details will be out. At the time that I am writing, we are not quite there. Please refer to the flyer that I am hoping will be included in this edition of the Word for all the details. If there is no flyer here, it will be in the weekly email. Please reach out to Andrea Heiger for any questions, how to attend, or how to donate to Torah Fund. She is always happy to help!

The Central Great Lakes Region of Women’s League will be hosting a virtual conference called “Our Journey Continues…..Nourishing our Souls” on April 25th. As a paid member of Sisterhood, there is no cost to attend. Please consider attending for part of the day or the whole day. More details will be out soon; please keep an eye out for them. What could be better than the smell of a fresh challah in the oven on Friday afternoon?! Edna Shrank, challah baker extraordinaire, will be leading a Challah Bake for us on May 2nd from 11:30am-1pm. She will do it in stages, so we can all experience the steps involved. She will provide us with her recipe, so you can do the same in your kitchen.

Sisterhood Are you interested in getting more involved in Sisterhood? Our meetings are on the second Tuesday of the month and listed in the weekly email. We love to see new faces and welcome all. When I started getting involved in Sisterhood, I did not see myself taking on the co-president position. When asked, I saw it as a chance to break out of my comfort zone into a position that many current members had already taken at some point. It was a chance to try something new while being helped, supported, and encouraged by current board and membership. You don’t know unless you try. I am glad that I decided to give it a go. I would encourage you to do the same. It certainly does not have to be a board position. Come for the connection and friendship. Pesach is almost upon us once again. What that will look like for each of us with COVID precautions still very much an issue is hard to know. At least it will not be the adrenaline rush it was last year. However, you decide to celebrate, I hope you find it meaningful. Michele and I are wishing everyone a good month. If there is anything that we can help with, please reach out.

Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. As I am writing this, it is hard to believe that we are getting ready to celebrate Purim and that Passover is just a few short weeks away. It really hit home the other day when I was walking through Mariano’s and saw the display set up with matzo, gefilte fish, and other foods that we eat to celebrate the Exodus from Egypt. That said, the Men’s Club has several things scheduled for this month. As I mentioned in my article last month, on January 30-31, the FJMC Leadership Development Institute (LDI) took place. Eric Yegelwel was one of the program chairmen and Brandt Rosen was an attendee. From speaking with both Eric and Brandt, the event was quite successful and there was plenty of learning, praying, and even some fun and games. While it wasn’t the same as physically being together, Brandt mentioned to me “I walked away feeling really strong about our club and I know I can continue the legacy that we have as being one of the top clubs in the Midwest Region and the FJMC.” On February 7, Super Bowl Sunday, we had our annual World-Wide Wrap. I am happy to say that this was truly a special program and I can’t thank everyone who put this together enough. It was unique in that we had Sam Sussman leading our service live, via Zoom, and we also had several the Heh students lead selected sections as well on video. Norm Kurtz gave a wonderful presentation on what tefillin is and why we put it on. Orin Rotman provided his usual ruach with his Raps and Brandt Rosen was our technical guru and MC. I want to give two special shout outs. First to Jennifer Rosen for the phenomenal poem that she wrote and presented. This was the first time she laid tefillin. The second goes to Evelyn Zimbalist who also laid tefillin for the first time. I happened to be watching her as her father was showing her what to do and could see how proud she was to be carrying on this tradition. Yasher Kochachem to all.

The Word – March 2021

Hopefully, you were one of the people who attended Tap the Torah with Rhonda Cohn as our presenter. She gave a wonderful discussion about the practice/rulings on avoiding women’s voices in the Orthodox movement. The presentation also discussed why Orthodox women cover up. To help in this discussion Rhonda invited her daughter, who is married to an Orthodox man, and follows the Orthodox tradition as well as two of her cousins who are both Rebbetzins. Thank you, Rhonda, for a wonderful and thought-provoking program. On Sunday March 14 we will be distributing Yom HaShoah candles and routes for delivery from 11:00 AM – 1:00 PM at the synagogue. This will be like what we did for the Hanukah candles so, if you are interested in taking a route or two, please stop by to pick up your supplies and route(s). I am hopeful that we will have the same type of participation as we had for the Hanukah candles. We had another Schmooze and L’chaim on February 24 and will be planning one for March as well so please keep an eye on your emails.

On Sunday March 21, we will be having another virtual poker tournament. This will be like the previous one. More information will be forthcoming and if you have any questions you can contact Steve Limer or Allen Harris. Saturday March 27 will be our annual Men’s Club Shabbat. Jerry Sakol our V.P. of Ritual is planning this and anyone who is interested in participating should reach out to him. Finally, it gives me great pleasure to announce that our 2021 Man of the Year is Steve Limer, and our Youth of the Year is Amelia Tehrani. Both are very deserving of this honor and we will be having the awards presentation sometime after Passover as we and the Midwest region are in the process of working on the details. I will update you when there is more information available. (continued on next page)

Men’s Club 2021 Man of the Year, Steve Limer and Youth of the Year Amelia Tehrani

By Rich Rosen, President

Over my 25 years as a member of the council, I have witnessed Interfaith Council's growing impact. We have done this by our support in fighting against community hunger through our participation in the i-walk & by other means via raising money & canned goods donations for our 4 members’ food pantries.....and by faith, through our inspirational and popular annual Thanksgiving celebration. This year, once the COVID shut in experience is over, we will be planning to sponsor a community children's book drive, participate in the Feed My Starving Children's programming, and engage in local environmental issues It is estimated that the membership at our 10 places of worship is between 6,000 to 7,500 families. It is our lay representative’s hope we can get to know you better; and, for you to know one another better this year. In doing so, and due to the popularity of zoom, we would like, with clergy approval, to present interesting programming for you. For example, at our February meeting, it was suggested that a Zoomed interfaith virtual tour of Jerusalem might be a good idea. I am asking for programming opinions and suggestions that might interest you. I can be contacted at rickrosen18@sbcglobal.net. As you know, these are troubling times. We now find it easy to find fault with one another, be it political or for any reason. We know that bigotry still exists. I believe that through our message of faith and fellowship, we can advance greater kindness and understanding for our community.

If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 35

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
