Have a family member or friend who is moving into the area? Have a friend who's unaffiliated and looking for a Jewish home? Know someone who is looking for a synagogue that is warm, welcoming and accepting of wherever they are in their Jewish journey? Spread the word about the great things happening at Congregation Beth Judea and a great thing may happen for you, in addition to having your friends and family join our congregation. If you refer a new member to join our community at Congregation Beth Judea you will be entered into a raffle to win a $360 shopping spree at our gift shop. B’nei Mitzvah Bios Elijah Zane Cooper will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, August 27, 2022. Elijah is an eighth grader at Aptakisic Junior High in Buffalo Grove, where he is involved in many school activities like the school play and Theatre club. He also performs locally in park district musicals and with Metropolis in Arlington Heights.

Elijah Zane Cooper

Elijah is a hilarious and sweet boy; he is very quick witted and has incredible comedic timing. Elijah loves reading, video games, bike riding, and spending time with his two mini dachshunds Sylvester and Elvis. We are overjoyed to celebrate this special day as Elijah becomes a Bar Mitzvah. He has been preparing for this special day for over a year. We couldn’t be more proud of all of the work and dedication spent learning his portions and studying. It will be a very emotional day seeing all of the hard work pay off. We are so thankful to his tutor Kim Abern. She and Elijah were a fabulous team. We are so grateful for all of Kim’s expertise, time, and commitment to Elijah and to working around our crazy schedules. Thank you to Cantor BatSarah for recording so beautifully and to Rabbi Zimbalist for his motivation, enthusiasm, and words of wisdom. Thank you also to Elijah’s teachers. Elijah is thankful for everyone’s time and care. He will be joined by his proud parents, Billy Cooper and Alana Cooper, and his Pappy and April. Also celebrating this simcha will be his equally proud grandparents, Steve and Judy Bartell and Bill and Linda Cooper and, of course, his older brother Jonah, who will be reading Torah. We are thankful to friends and family who have traveled to see Elijah on the bima. We are looking forward to August 27th, 2022 as being a highlight of our lives.

A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our August B’nei Mitzvah Families

from your Beth Judea Family.

Jack was a founding member of Congregation Beth Judea, a dynamic member of its Men’s Club, Ritual Committee and board of Directors. He was also a steady force within the synagogue choir and was devoted to the Jewish music with which he was raised. He was loved and respected by all for his strong work ethic, his terrific sense of humor, his good nature and positive outlook on life. Over the years, the Dr. Jack Rizman Memorial Fund has underwritten a series of wonderful musical events open to the entire community, including Annual Fundraisers, Cantorial Concerts, and CBJ Choir. CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Men’s Club CBJ Men’s Club Moments

Shalom from our CBJ Men’s Club. The summer of 2022 has seen our Congregation and our club returning towards full activity. Our Midwest Region Retreat was held in Bloomington, IL. The attendees shared many highlights of this event. The HIAS Refugee Program has helped the assisted family to move into their new home. They are now being educated by volunteers on how to function here in things like education, Ventra cards, summer camps, and other support. We are still asking for financial support for a few more months. Men’s Club Shabbat was a great success. Thank You to Jerry Sakol for guiding us again this year. We had around 30 folks attend our Burgers and Bourbon event held on Sunday, July 14TH at the Shul. We enjoyed burgers (beef, turkey, and vegan) while we were educated in the nuances of the sampled bourbons. A few bottles of bourbon were auctioned off during this event. Steve Limer, Chairman of our Club retreat, is now putting together his committees. The 2023 Men’s Club Retreat will be held at the Hilton Garden Inn in NW Milwaukee. Save the dates of January 14th and 15th. Sandy Victor is the chair of our award-winning Wellness Program. Once a month we gather as an organization to share in a physical activity or report our physical activity for Sandy to document. Our softball teams are run by Allen Harris and Brandt Rosen. As of my writing this article, our A Team has the record of 5 – 2 while our B Team has the record of 2 -5. We do have softball jerseys and baseball hats available to purchase for anyone who wants to show their CBJ pride even if there is no intention to play softball. The annual Dr Jack Rizman Memorial Golf Outing will be held on Sunday, September 18, 2022 at the Buffalo Grove Golf Club. Hole sponsors are welcome. Ron Friedman is our chair for Project Isiah to organize the collection of food goods at the start of the High Holidays. The Hebrew Literacy class, organized by Jerry Sakol, is preparing for this year’s class. Sandy Victor is organizing the repairs and updates to both the drive through Sukkah and the traditional wooden Sukkah. We look forward to having both of those ready for the Holiday. Respectfully submitted on behalf of the CBJ Men’s Club, Alan S. Friedlander BJMC President

The Helping Hand Plan

The Helping Hand Plan A Project of Congregation Beth Judea Hesed Committee • •

Do you need some help? Do you need a ride to a doctor’s appointment? Do you need a ride to services at Beth Judea?

WHAT IS THE HELPING HAND PLAN? Beth Judea has a group of volunteers who are ready, willing, and able to lend a hand. Just call or e-mail if you need some assistance. WHO DO I CONTACT TO REQUEST SOME HELP? Please call Larry Wollheim at 847-6349399 or e-mail Larry at lwollheim45@gmail.com to request help. It’s a Mitzvah to help someone. Please allow us to help you.

You Make A Difference We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved.

If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the Hesed (Caring) committee members below: Ellene Lammers Marilyn Green-Rebnord Evan Rumack Larry Wolheim

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed Committee is not just for birthday or anniversary calls (although we enjoy making them!) We are also here to help when you are struggling, feeling lonely, or ill. As the pandemic winds down, we hope we can start visiting those of you who feel the need for more support. Until then, we would like to stay in touch with you by phone. However, we can’t help you unless you let us know you need help. Please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com, Evan Rumack at evanbr1@comcast.net, or Marilyn Green-Rebnord at megx150@comcast.net to let us know what you need. We and our committee are here for you.

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 40
