HESED COMMITTEE Dear Congregants, We hope you and your families are doing well during the quarantine. As the virus numbers in the state are beginning to rise again, it is important that we recognize that many of our congregants are feeling more isolated than ever. Perhaps you know of members who would benefit from ongoing contact from a caring congregant or perhaps you wish for this outreach. If so, please let us know, and we will have a volunteer contact you on a regular basis. We cannot do this, however, unless you let us know. Please let us help you if you- or someone you know- need it! We don’t want you to feel alone. We continue to reach out to congregants to mark happy milestones, such as birthdays and anniversaries. We want you to know you are being thought of during these happy occasions. If you would like to help make these calls, please contact Marilyn or Evan.

If you need assistance with technology to participate in the synagogue offerings or if you need a cloth mask, please let us know! Finally, we would like to welcome all the new members to our Beth Judea family. Thank you for recognizing CBJ as a warm and welcoming community. While we cannot congregate in person, there are many opportunities for you to become involved. If joining our committee is enticing, please call or mail us. Our email address is listed below. If you would be interested in helping us in the future or have suggestions on how to best meet the needs of congregants, please contact us at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. We wish each of you the best. Please stay safe and use all reasonable precautions to remain healthy. We are one family and need to take care of each other. Evan Rumack Marilyn Green-Rebnord

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood Happy Spring everyone! We hope that you all had nice seders in whatever form they took. They were certainly easier than the adrenaline filled Zeders of 2020. As more people get vaccinated and the number of cases come down, We are hopeful that we will all be able to see each other soon. Thank you to Renee Kaplan and her committee (Debbie Bender, Laurie B. Davis, Andrea Heiger, Sandy Levitt, Lauri Rosenbloom, Marilyn Victor, and Sandy Victor – our score keeper) for an amazing first-time virtual Mah Jongg tournament. What a lovely Sunday afternoon with friends from near and far. We even got to meet some Mah Jongg players who attended from Ohio. Thank you to Cheri Neiman for the donation of Mah Jongg goodies for the goodie bags and raffle prizes. Another thank you to Renee Kaplan, Laurie B. Davis, and the Sisterhood Gift Shop for donations that went to the raffle prizes. Our next event will be our Virtual Tour of Paris to benefit Torah Fund. Join us for a tour of Jewish sites in Paris on April 18th @ 3:30pm. A minimum $36 donation is your passport for the trip. There is not a more economical or safe way to see Paris at the moment. Come and join your fellow congregants! Please RSVP to CBJsisterhood@gmail.com. Have a question about the tour, please contact Andrea Heiger at andreadheiger@gmail.com. Please see the flyer for more details. The Central Great Lake Region of Women’s League is hosting a virtual conference on April 25th. All paid members of Sisterhood can attend for free. We hope that you will consider coming for part of the day or all day. Registration is open; the schedule will be forthcoming. The region asked that we nominate a valued volunteer to be honored at the event. We got special consideration to nominate two Valued Volunteers. Thank you to Sandy Levitt and Sari London for all that they have and continue to do for PADS! Sisterhood has been serving at a PADS shelter monthly for years. As COVID has changed how Journeys (the organization that supports PADS) is helping the homeless, so have we. Sari and Sandy have been getting a monthly list of food that Sisterhood members are donating. They have been then getting the food to Journeys for distribution. Thank you to both of you for all your work in helping a very vulnerable population.

On May 2nd @ 11:30 we will host a challah bake with Edna Shrank. She can cook more varieties of challah than I knew possible. She will show us the steps and provide her special recipe. This will not be an event where you bake alongside her. It is a chance to watch and ask questions so that you can it do it on your own. As we come to the end of Passover, just think how good your kitchen will smell! Please RSVP to CBJsisterhood@gmail.com. Please see the flyer for more details. Men’s Club Happy Passover from the Men’s Club! I hope that you are all enjoying the holiday and had good seders with your family or with the synagogue on the second night. My family got together for both nights and it was nice to celebrate with them. April will be a somewhat quiet month for the Men’s Club, but I hope you will be able to join what we have scheduled. On Sunday March 14, we distributed Yom HaShoah candles and routes for delivery. I want to thank all the volunteers who picked up routes. By now you should have received your candle, which should be lit on the evening of April 7 and you take a moment to remember those who lost their lives in the Shoah. As we have for the past few years, each candle has the name of a child and the date they perished in the concentration camp they were at. May their memories be for a blessing. On Sunday March 21, we had our second virtual poker tournament. As of this writing, I do not have the results but will let you know in my next article. Thank you to Allen Harris and Steve Limer for all their hard work in putting this together. Saturday March 27, we had our annual Men’s Club Shabbat. Thank you to Jerry Sakol, V.P. of Ritual, for putting this together. For all of you that participated in the service, Yasher Koach. This month we will be reinstituting our monthly Wellness Program. Thanks to Sandy Victor for heading this up. Please keep an eye on your emails for the date and, if you participate, make sure that you let Sandy know.

Softball is back. We will be having 2 teams this year. If you are interested, please reach out to Allen Harris. As of now, 5 synagogues will be participating (including us). We will be looking to add to our many championships. This July we would have been gathering at the Sheraton Grand Chicago for our bi-annual FJMC International convention. Unfortunately, this had to be cancelled due to the virus. Instead, we will be having a virtual convention from June 6 – June 13. The cost will be $36 and there will be an $18 subsidy. Please save the date as we would like to see many of you register. This is also a great opportunity to experience convention without having to travel. As someone who has been to convention in the past, I highly recommend it. More to come soon as the schedule is released. A special shout out to our own Brandt Rosen. He, along with others, have put together a new group for our younger adult members (20’s and 30’s). It is called Jewllenialz and if you or anyone you know fit that demographic, please let them know that there is a group for them.

That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. Chag Sameach, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

Hesed Committee

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 34
