B’nei Mitzvah Bios Benjamin Daniel Veronie will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, October 9, 2021.

Ben is an 8th grader at Woodland Middle School, where he plays trumpet in the marching band and concert band. He also enjoys soccer and plays center defense for the Lindenhurst Area Soccer Club. In his free time, Ben enjoys time with friends, riding his bike, and reading. Ben used his love of biking in his Bar Mitzvah project, where he rode 35 miles to raise $1500 for several Jewish charities.

Anna Katherine Veronie will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 9, 2021. Anna is an 8th grader at Woodland Middle School, where she plays flute in the marching and concert band. She is also a member of the Woodland softball team. Anna loves to dance and is very involved in the Above the Barre Dance Company. She enjoys hanging out with friends and loves animals. Her Bat Mitzvah project benefitted Reach Rescue, a local pet adoption non-profit, where she volunteered, made cloth chew toys, and collected needed items for the foster dogs awaiting adoption. Rachel Liseta Veronie will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, October 9, 2021. Rachel is an 8th grader at Woodland Middle School, where she plays trumpet in the marching and concert band, and she’s also on the Woodland softball team. Additionally, Rachel is involved in the school choir, voice lessons, and has performed in several plays both inside and outside of school. In her free time, she likes being with her friends, reading, being crafty, and cooking/baking. With her Bat Mitzvah project, Rachel is sharing her love of reading with children who are less fortunate by collecting donations of new or gently used books for Bernie’s Books Bank, a nonprofit that distributes books to underserved children in the Chicago area. Ben, Anna and Rachel are looking forward to celebrating this milestone with each other, their parents, Bubbie, Opa, Nona, Grandpa Mike, aunts, uncles, cousins, extended family, and friends. On behalf of Ben, Anna, and Rachel, the entire Veronie family would like to give a special thanks to Natalie Gurin, Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Bat Sarah, Anna Besser, and all of the religious school teachers for all of their guidance, inspiration, and preparation for this milestone and beyond.

The third Jewllennialz event is in the books! Twenty-three people attended our Paint & Sip gathering (some left before this photo was taken!). We were virtually instructed to complete a beautiful painting of a whale breaching towards the moon. Messes were made, all the completed paintings were equally good, of course, and fun was had by all. A huge thank you to the Sisterhood and Programming Committee for helping to fund this event!

All Congregation Beth Judea members age 55 and over, are welcome to participate.

If you or your Millennial/Gen-Z child or grandchild missed this event and are interested in attending the next event, the Jewllennialz committee is in the process of planning a Kabbalah Cookout! Join us for delicious food and Jewish mysticism taught by our very own Cantor Bat-Sarah and meet some more Jewish young adults while you're at it. Date TBD. Email jewllennialz@gmail.com information.

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know. 

If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.

We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others .

If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Religious Education Religious School News

Cantor Bat-Sarah Education Director

Religious School for Kindergarten through Kitah Heh (7th grade) On-site on Sundays Religious School for Kitah Aleph (3rd grade) through Kitah Heh (7th grade) On-line on Tuesdays

We know that our children thrive on routines, and we know how disrupted their routines have been during this past year and a half. What many of us forget is how important routines are to all of us. Something as simple as dropping your student off for three hours on a Sunday morning and catching glimpses of your synagogue friends in the parking lot can be very calming to all of us. I have been so honored these past few weeks to observe how much our teachers craved their routines as well. A teacher of Judaism is someone tasked with embodying love of the tradition and joy in sparking understanding in their students. They are not drilling math facts; they are passing on an ancient way of life. Great teachers of Judaism always refer to what they’re doing as, “learning” and never as “teaching.” This speaks to an important principle of Judaism, which is that every single person has a Torah to give to the world. Our teachers at the Religious School have a tradition to pass along, they also have the joy of getting to learn from and with each of their students. This school year will continue to require flexibility from our entire school community. We will be focusing on engaging our students and connecting our families. We are so grateful for your support! I look forward to an amazing year with our students and our community!

Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. I hope you all had an enjoyable High Holiday season. It was nice to be able to be back in the synagogue celebrating and praying with many of our CBJ families. Whether you were there in person or on the live stream, I hope you felt the specialness that is Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur and the ruach that is Sukkot and Simchat Torah. A big yashar kochahem to Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Bat-Sarah, Lisa Neiman, Norm Kurtz, Bruce Darin, Arnie Bender, Bruce Entman, and everybody else who participated in making the holidays incredibly special. Hopefully, next year we can all be together in the shul. This month, the Men’s Club has a number of events planned. On August 29, we had our Dr. Jack Rizman Golf Outing. While the weather didn’t cooperate, we did have 47 golfers play, although most only got in 6 holes, and over 40 for dinner that evening. Thank you to Allen Harris, Morrie Rizman, and Chuck Walcer for all your hard work in putting this together. We are looking forward to next year’s event. Once again, we sponsored Project Isaiah. Thank you to Norm Kurtz, Sandy Victor, Alan Friedlander, Steve Limer, Evan Rumack, Fred Rabinowitz, Jerry Sakol, Brian Katz, and Brandt Rosen for volunteering to staff the pod and collect the donations. As we did last year, the floor of the pod was about filled with all the food and non-perishables that were donated. These donations will be given to the Ark and help those in need. Thank you all who donated for fulfilling the mitzvah of charity. On September 12, we built the wooden Sukkah and on September 19, we built the drive-thru Sukkah. Thank you to our Sukkah Guru, Sandy Victor, for once again taking the lead on this project. Also, thank yous go out to Norm Kurtz, Louis Rabin, Eric Yegelwel, Larry Wolheim, Alan Marcus, Myron Reicher, Orin Rotman, Jerry Sakol, Alan Friedlander, Bruce Darin, Carl Weiss, Evan Rumack, Barry Bickshorn, Ron Friedman, David Schneider, and Manny for your help in putting up the wooden Sukkah and to Sandy Victor, David Schneider, and Marty Rothenberg for putting up the drive-thru Sukkah. As Sukkot is just starting as of this writing, I will have more in my next article about our Sukkot celebrations. Our annual Hebrew Literacy class will begin with Jerry Sakol and Lou Rabin being our teachers. Hebrew Literacy 1 is designed to teach those with no previous (or forgotten) knowledge of Hebrew how to read. The 12-week course focuses on learning to read the words used in the Friday Night service. The class is held on Tuesday evenings from October 5, 2020 – January 4, 2022, with graduation on Friday evening January 7, 2022. If you are interested, please contact the Shul. Our annual Tap the Torah series begins on Wednesday October 20 with the topic “Finders Keepers: Reviewing what’s yours”. Orin Rotman will be facilitating, and we will be having a special guest, CBJ President Herb Finn, presenting as well. This will be on Zoom, click here for flyer. As I have been mentioning over the past few articles, we are planning our bi-annual retreat. It will be at The Ridge Hotel on December 11 & 12, 2021. Brandt Rosen, Steve Limer, and Alan Friedlander are chairing the event. If you have been to one of these in the past, you know what a great time we have. If you haven’t, I encourage you to sign up. While it is only for one evening, we have many wonderful events and programs including: a wonderful Havdalah service led by Rabbi Zimbalist, Hearing Men’s Voices program, a historical trivia session led by Stacy Sachs, a Saturday evening program (which is still in the works), and plenty of time to just relax and schmooze with the guys. The cost for the weekend includes your accommodations, meals, and fun. Please see the flyer in the weekly bulletin or The Word. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to contact Brandt, Steve, or me. Last time, in 2018, we had 60 guys attend, and I know that we can get at least that many this year. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. L’Shalom, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

INTERFAITH COUNCIL News from the Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council By Joanne Dicker, a Congregation Beth Judea Representative

The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council proudly serves this community. If you have any programming suggestions, please forward them to me or your IFC representatives.

Please join us and your neighbors for these upcoming programs:

1.

Book drive: September. Check your congregation for book bins. We are working on a book drive for pre-school children. Help us to open their world and their imaginations through reading! We are collecting gently used or new books. This initiative seeks to support and encourage parents to read to their children. We also endeavor to help preschool children gain confidence in their reading ability, in English, Spanish, or both. These books would be made available for free in a variety of community facilities and shelters. Did you know that 70% or people in jail or in juvenile court can’t read past the third grade level? If you have books to donate, call us at 224-699-0386.

2.

Feed My Starving Children: November 22, 23, 24, 26. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council has reserved spots to pack food at Feed My Starving Children in Libertyville. No experience necessary. A wonderful family and friend project. Help teach gratitude and thanksgiving. Please see the attached flyer for session times and location.

3.

Upcoming: Our Annual Thanksgiving Celebration: November 21, 2021!

Please help your neighbors whose lives have been adversely affected by the pandemic economically. The Northwest Suburban Interfaith Council helps food pantries at Congregation Beth Am, Kingswood Methodist Church, St. Alphonsus, and St. Mary Parish. Your monetary donations are always welcome but especially needed at this time of year. I am also attaching a flier of requested nonperishable foods and dry goods should you wish to purchase and drop off at the food pantries directly. If you need assistance, I am also attaching contact information for our food and local pantries. Pantry Assistance Flyer

An Important Announcement CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HESED (CARING) COMMITTEE The Hesed committee would like to know if you have any difficulties/problems that you would like to discuss with a knowledgeable individual. We have a group of congregants who have been trained or are professionals who would be able to provide a brief consultation with you in order to refer you on for more in-depth assistance. We are also thinking about starting some support groups. We would like to know what you feel your needs are. Please email Ellene Lammers at elammers@comcast.net or call the Rabbi. FOR A LIST OF EMERGENCY HOTLINE NUMBERS, AGENCIES AND RESOURCES click here

We Would Like To Know WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement, or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Hesed (Caring) committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

Please call the synagogue office with this information. Do not assume that someone else will have notified the synagogue staff. 38
