FROM THE RABBI SACRED SPACES AND PLACES: HOLY TIME TO BE SPENT TOGETHER Shavuot is the festival identified as the We also learn (Avot 2:13) “tzi’u u’ru ayzo time to formally celebrate the gift of he derech tovah she’yidbok ba ha’adam – Torah. It gives Jews around the world go out and see which is the good path that the opportunity to come together and one should hold on to.” Once again, we create sacred spaces to learn from within turn to our Sages who teach us that this the sacred places we create. Our theme lesson is meant to remind us to look at the for our Tikkun L’Eil Shavuot this year – character traits of those who travel along our evening study session that we the path with us or those we meet along the encourage everyone to attend in-person way. It reminds us to surround ourselves or remotely – is Sacred Spaces and with positive influencers and there is Places. As in past years, we will have something to be learned from everyone. It is presentations, provide everyone with a study sheet, hard work that requires constant attention. It requires and help to facilitate a greater conversation and commitment and dedication. It is a sacred and proper discussion rather than primarily offering frontal path of devotion that is impossible to pave if no one is presentations as we’ve offered in the past. There there to help. will be great learning together, a gamut of different voices, interpretations, commentary, and Please join me and mark your calendars as we of course, cheesecake! To “kick off” our journey find new, sacred, and inspiring paths that lead us to to find sacred spaces and places, here are two exciting spaces and places as we formally install teachings from Pirkei Avot – The Ethics of Our Cantor Bat-Sarah on Friday evening June 4th and Ancestors – that help to guide us along our sacred experience our Tikkun L’Eil Shavuot on Saturday journeys and help us to identify sacred paths to build community and grow closer to God. evening June 5th. More details will be available soon, and I hope to see you at both! Great things are We learn (Avot 2:1), “Ayzo he derech yishara happening at Congregation Beth Judea, every person she’yavor lo ha’adam – Which is the proper path plays an important role, and we are at our best when that one should follow?” With so many different we learn from each other. opportunities in the world today, what do we do? How do we discover the right path to achieve our goals? Midrash teaches that we are to “walk along Chag Sameach, righteous paths,” which our Sages explain as Rabbi Zimbalist following a path of self-awareness, so that we can examine our behaviors and continually improve ourselves. Some people refer to “righteous paths” as “Godly paths.” And since we are all created in the image of God, what better path is there for us to follow other than a Godly one? However, the text above is specific and challenges us to choose “a proper path” – a path of kindness and selflessness, a path that must be shared with others, and a path that begins a journey for all of God’s children to embark upon hand in hand. This path helps to build community and we cannot effectively achieve this goal without communal hands to hold.

NOTES FROM THE CANTOR Shavuot is rapidly approaching, and before that, the conclusion of a truly extraordinary school year. With higher enrollment than anticipated and flexibility in access to classes, we met our families where they were throughout this year. Just as on Pesah we remember the Exodus from Egypt as though we ourselves were there, on Shavuot, we mark the Receiving of the Torah on Mount Sinai as if we ourselves witnessed Revelation. In truth, every time that we pass the teachings of the Torah to another generation, we are witnessing Revelation. These last few weeks of Religious School, the community is having multiple opportunities to view the passing of Jewish tradition to our children. The 1st and 2nd graders distributed Passover food to poor families, the Aleph class presented to us their

renditions of Torah stories, the Gimmel and Dalet classes are spending an entire Shabbat together at Kallah and the Aleph and Bet classes will be leading Friday night services with the amazing Jewish rock star, Rick Recht. These are just a few of the culminating projects and events in the Religious School.

I have been so blessed in this my first year to have the creative input and support of a fabulous Education Committee! I am thoroughly enjoying getting to know the traditions of the Beth Judea family, and I have been so warmly welcomed by all of you! I cannot wait to experience the community of learning and celebration that we will continue to create and sustain in the coming year. Cantor Elizabeth Bat-Sarah

Siddur Lev Shalem Dear Beloved Members of Congregation Beth Judea, We are so excited to welcome the greater congregation to Shabbat morning services this Saturday as we change siddurim from Siddur Sim Shalom to Siddur Lev Shalem. Siddur Lev Shalem is the most updated siddur published by the Conservative Movement and is quickly becoming found in Conservative synagogues all over the world. This siddur complements the Lev Shalem Machzor that we currently use on the High Holidays. It is filled with thought-provoking and meaningful commentary, poetry, and history of the prayers we recite throughout our lives. We will be purchasing 30 copies directly from the Rabbinical Assembly. These copies will be available to anyone wishing to purchase a personal Siddur Lev Shalem at the cost of $33.00 per siddur. A comprehensive PDF version of the siddur is also available through this link on our website. If you borrowed a copy of Siddur Sim Shalom, please return them to the synagogue office. Click on the link to reserve your copy (copies) today, and please let our Executive Director Lisa (lneiman@bethjudea.org) know if you have any questions.

I look forward to seeing you this Shabbat!

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Logan Kane Scheibe will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 14, 2022. Logan is an Honors student at Brookwood Middle School, in Genoa City, Wisconsin. Logan has been through many changes this year and has proven to be the most amazing, flexible, outstanding young man who is a gentle giant time and time again.

Logan Kane Scheibe

Logan Kane started a new school and hockey team, and in both places, there were new coaches, teachers, and teammates. It is amazing that within a couple of weeks, the coaches saw that Logan is a leader and team player both on and off the ice, his teachers saw him as a person with his love for hockey and Metallica, and the team looked up to Logan as their leader and buddy that they could rely on for both defense, offense, and protector. Being the little brother can be difficult, especially living up to two amazing older brothers who excel in both school and their passions. However, Logan has found his own passions and has excelled to become his own person who has charisma like no other. He is the little sheina punim who has a heart of gold and loves people for their hearts and can see when a person needs his support and friendship. His sense of humor and his perseverance amaze his parents, grandparents, and everyone who has the pleasure of knowing Logan. Logan Kane will be celebrating this special milestone with his proud parents Tammy and Tim Scheibe, his two best friends, his brothers Nathan and Ryan, Bubbie and Zadie, Jason, family, and friends. Logan Kane would like to thank his “team” of educators who have guided him to be successful with Judaic learning. Thank you, Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Bat-Sarah, Anna Besser, his Hebrew school teachers, Hebrew tutor Natalie Gurin, and his special Bubbie.

A Hearty Mazel Tov to all our May B’nei Mitzvah Families

from your Beth Judea Family.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Steven Scott Levy will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday May 21, 2022.

Steven Scott Levy

Steven is a 7th grader at Twin Groves Middle School in Buffalo Grove. He enjoys all things sports, especially baseball and basketball. Steven has played organized baseball since he was 5 years old and is currently part of the BGRA Coyotes travel team. When not playing sports, Steven is watching the Cubs, Bears, Bulls, and Kansas University basketball games. For Steven’s mitzvah project, he is raising funds and collecting sports equipment for The Sports Shed. This organization serves schools and nonprofits in under-resourced areas that struggle to run athletic programs due to lack of funding Joining Steven on this special day are his parents Staci and Michael Levy, his sister Abby, grandparents Caron and Jack Knopoff and Bobbe Levy. Steven will also be joined by many aunts, uncles, and cousins and friends from near and far. Steven and his family would like to thank his Hebrew School teachers, Rabbi Zimbalist, and Cantor Bat-Sarah for their guidance during this process. And a special thank you to Shira Sender and Natalie Gurin for preparing him for this meaningful day.

Daniel Marcus Kowitt will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Saturday, May 28th. Daniel has been part of the Beth Judea community since preschool.

Daniel Marcus Kowitt

Daniel is a sweet, thoughtful, and compassionate seventh grader at Middle School North in Lake Zurich where he is a member of the Wrestling Team and plays the flute in the band. For Daniel’s mitzvah project, he is raising money for cancer research. His grandfather, Norman, passed away two short years ago due to cancer. Norman had a huge influence on Daniel’s life. Donations can be made directly at cancer.org. Daniel is looking forward to celebrating his Bar Mitzvah with his mother, sister, brother, grandparents, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. He is very thankful to those who have traveled from out of town to celebrate with him. The family would like to thank Rabbi Zimbalist, Cantor Bat-Sarah, Natalie Gurin, and all his Hebrew School teachers for providing guidance and an excellent Jewish education in preparation leading up to this milestone, along with preparing him for becoming an active member in the Jewish community this day forward.

HIAS/JCFS Immigration & Resettlement Project Dear Congregants, As we await the arrival of our family from Guatemala. (we have not yet been given a date for their arrival from HIAS/JCFS), we must continue to prepare.

We are ready to collect funds for the use of the family (e.g; clothing, food, or gift cards at stores near their apartment once the location of the apartment is known) as well as funds to help defray some of our expenses (e.g; fees for the rental unit where all donated items are being stored, fees for truck rental, etc.). If you would like to contribute, please send your checks made out to Beth Judea and mark in the memo line “For Refugee Family.” Or, you can make a donation using Zelle at lneiman@bethjudea.org. 2022 BETH JUDEA’S MEN’S CLUB MAN & YOUTH OF THE YEAR ALAN MARCUS 2022 Beth Judea Men’s Club Man of the Year Alan Marcus grew up in in the Northwest Suburbs. He and his family were active members of Congregation BJBE (then located in Glenview), where he was profoundly influenced by his great teacher, Rabbi Mark Shapiro (z”l). Alan married his wife, Marcie, in 1993. They joined Congregation Beth Judea shortly after moving to Buffalo Grove in the summer of 1997 and adopted their son, Ross, in 2002. Alan became active in CBJ’s Men’s Club shortly after joining the congregation. He owes debts of gratitude to Norm Kurtz for getting him involved and the late Burt Fishman (z”l) for his invaluable mentorship. Alan’s past service to CBJ Men’s Club includes terms first as recording secretary and then ritual vice president. He has continued to serve the Men’s Club in a variety of miscellaneous capacities after his terms expired and was honored to receive the Man of the Year Award in 2001. Most recently, Alan created and coordinated a Hearing Men’s Voices Program, entitled “Helping the Next Generation Learn From Us,” that focused on transitional leadership issues as part of last December’s CBJ Men’s Club winter retreat. He has also devised and coordinated various other programs, including one that brought a sofer to teach about his craft as part of the World Wide Wrap. Alan is also involved in numerous ritual activities, including serving as an assistant floor gabbi. He also leads Torah discussion groups and Alternative Minyonim whenever the regular leaders are unavailable. However, Alan most enjoys serving as the shul bartender after Saturday morning Shabbat services and other special occasions, including Purim. He always makes sure that non-alcoholic choices are always available for those who wish to have them and will be happy to pour you the L’Chaim of your choosing during your next Shabbat visit to CBJ. Alan is grateful to the CBJ Men’s Club for bestowing this great honor on him and wishes to thank the clergy and staff CBJ, as well as his family and friends, for their support.

BROOKE ROBBINS 2022 Beth Judea Men’s Club Youth of the Year Brooke Robbins is currently a senior at Adlai E. Stevenson High School in Lincolnshire, Illinois. In the fall, she will be heading off to the University of Wisconsin - Madison to major in Human Development & Family Studies. Brooke has been an active member of USY since eighth grade. She has held many roles in Beth Judea’s USY Chapter (BJUSY) such as Freshman Representative, Membership/Kadima Vice President, and Chapter President. This year Brooke is serving on Chicago’s Regional Executive Board as the Communications Vice President for CHUSY. Within the CBJ community, Brooke has become a welcoming face. In the religious school, she was a madricha for a variety of ages until becoming a Hebrew teacher this year for the Gimel and Dalet classes. She is proud of her place within Congregation Beth Judea. She spends her time hanging out with friends or working with children. In the summer, she works as a counselor at Tamarak Day Camp, and during the school year she works at the Little Patriots Preschool. At school, Brooke is a member of the National Honors Society, Hebrew National Honors Society, Club Israel, and Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA). Brooke is truly honored and proud to be named Beth Judea Men’s Club’s 2022 Youth of the Year. She would like to extend her gratitude to Marc Sender for his mentorship, encouragement, and leadership throughout her USY journey, her outstanding friendships in BJUSY and CHUSY, Rabbi Zimbalist, Mrs. Anna Besser, Cantor Bat-Sarah, and the entire CBJ Family. Brooke would also like to thank her parents, Joel and Heidi Robbins, and siblings Ari and Allison for their continued support and love. She would lastly like to thank her grandparents for encouraging and teaching the Jewish traditions that shaped her into the proud Jewish individual she is today.

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood Dear Fellow Congregants, When you read this article, Pesach will be in our “rear view mirror.” We hope that your holiday was full of joy and that you were able to celebrate in the company of family and friends. We would like to thank everyone who participated in Sisterhood Shabbat. It was wonderful to see that 56 tiles were filled with smiling faces; ready to sing, chant, and pray. It was also a pleasure to have the involvement of our members who live afar. Thank you to Sandy Englander and her committee for organizing our Pesach program, the Bubbe and Zayde Show. Everyone who participated was thoroughly entertained! Much appreciation to Paula Carter for planning a fundraiser at Kendra Scott, located in Deer Park Town Center! Our ladies’ night out was on April 27, with 20% of all sales going to CBJ Sisterhood. On May 1, we enjoyed the Tea Party to honor Torah Fund supporters. Thank you to Andrea Heiger and her committee. It was wonderful to experience Tefilah Yoga under the guidance of a JTS graduate. To donate to Torah Fund and support the Rabbinical schools of the Conservative Movement, please contact Andrea Heiger (847) 507-2168. We look forward to our dual Judaic Arts program/Installation on June 14 at 6pm, chaired by Marilyn Victor and Hannah Whitney. We will enjoy dinner together (outside, weather permitting) and then Cantor Bat-Sarah will lead us in song and discussion. Please watch for the flyer for this event for more information. As always, we thank Sari London and Sandy Levitt for keeping us connected to the amazing work of PADS. Please remember to donate when the SignUp Genius is distributed. Once again, we thank Ann Lerman and her Gift Shop Team for all their hard work. Please remember to visit our Gift Shop for all of your Judaic gift needs! It is open Tuesday 4-7:00pm, Sunday 9-12:00pm (until the end of the school year) and always by appointment by calling Ann Lerman at (847) 373-8640. Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. As I am writing this, Passover has just ended, and it is getting close to the end of the year at the synagogue. Things are starting to get back to normal as we are seeing more in person events at the shul and the Men’s Club will be having some as well. On Sunday April 3, we packed Yom HaShoah candles, and we had many volunteers help with this. Twenty-one people showed up, and we got the whole thing finished in less than 1 hour. Thanks go out to Dan & Celia Geiger, Gary & Debbie Mills, Sandy Victor, Larry Weindruch, Phyllis Udany, Andrew Davis, Lou Rabin, Stacy Sachs, Sam & Marc Gottfried, Jerry Sakol, Bob Balough, Orin Rotman, Alan Marcus, Ron Friedman, Kim Mann, and Brandt and Sia Rosen for all their help with this. Additionally, I would like to thank, Stacy Sachs, Sandy Victor, Gary & Debbie Mills, Sam & Marc Gottfried, Ron Friedman, Jeff Spitz, Jerry Sakol, Lou Rabin, Bob Balough, Andrew Davis, Orin Rotman, Brandt Rosen, Marty Rothenberg, and David Schneider for their help delivering the candles. This really was not only a Men’s Club effort but also a congregational effort, and we, as a club, couldn’t be prouder. As I mentioned in past articles, the Midwest Region retreat will be May 13-15. It will be at the Chateau Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington, IL. The committee has put together a wonderful weekend, and I, for one, am looking forward to this event. If you are interested in attending, please see the flyer which has a link for you to register. Additionally, the Men’s Club will be giving subsidies to help with the cost. If this will be your first time attending this event, we will be giving $300 toward the cost, and if you have been there in the past, then you will be getting $200. Hopefully, this will entice some of you to attend. If you have any questions about the retreat, please feel free to contact me. Another event this month is the Man of the Year/Youth of the Year Awards ceremony. As I have mentioned in previous articles, it will be on Sunday May 22, 2022, at Congregation Beth Hillel B’nai Emunah in Wilmette. We will be honoring our Man of the Year Alan Marcus and our Youth of the Year Brooke Robbins. While the ads were due by April 29th, if you are interested in attending, please let me know. As of this writing, there is not any current information on when our sponsor family will be arriving at their new home in the greater Chicago area. As I have mentioned in previous articles, we, along with the Sisterhood, CBJ, and our friends at the Niagara Foundation, are sponsoring a refugee family from Guatemala that will be immigrating here. Thank you again to all who have donated everything from diapers to furniture, as well as money, to help make the transition for this family that much easier. We are looking forward to their arrival. On May 11, we will be having our last Tap the Torah of the year. The topic will be “Bernstein: Man, Myth, Music” and will be presented by Marty Karlin with Orin Rotman as our moderator. This event will be in-person and on Zoom. Please see the flyer for more information and to register.

On Monday, May 9, 2022, we will be having our biennial elections. We put a nominating committee together to come up with a slate, and that slate was presented to our Board of Directors for approval, which they did. It is my pleasure to announce that the following people have been slated for the 20222024 Men’s Club Board. Alan Friedlander – President

Steve Limer – V.P. Programming

Brandt Rosen – V.P. Membership and Communications

Ron Friedman – V.P. Finance

Alan Marcus – V. P. Ritual

Men’s Club If you are a member in good standing of the Men’s Club, you have the right to vote. If you have any questions regarding this, please contact me. Additionally, during this same meeting we will be voting on changes to our constitution. A copy of the slate and constitution has been sent out to all Men’s Club members. Once again, Beth Judea Men’s Club will be fielding two softball teams. Thanks to Alan Harris, Steve Limer, and Brandt Rosen for spearheading this. Also, thanks to Neil Jordan, Brandt Rosen, Mike Levy, and Ken Goldstein for being our coaches. The games begin on May 1 and will be played in Northbrook at the baseball diamonds on Techny Road. The games are played on Sundays (with the exception of holidays or festivals), and we would love to see you come out and cheer for our guys. We are in the process of planning the dedication of the renovated Memorial Garden. Please keep an eye on your emails for more information. We are also in the process of planning an in-person event at the synagogue for some time in July that will include food and beverages (including the adult kind). More information to follow. Congratulations to Adam Barshefsky; he was the winner of the Men’s Club Madness raffle. Adam won the signed print of the Jewish baseball players that is currently hanging by the entrance near the office. Enjoy your prize Adam, and thanks to everyone who bought tickets. Also, thanks to Larry Bender for chairing this. Finally, Men’s Club Shabbat has been scheduled for Saturday June 2. If you are interested in participating by reading Torah or Haftorah or would like to do something else, please reach out to our Ritual VP Jerry Sakol. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy.
