FROM THE RABBI FINDING COURAGE AND MEANING FROM WITHIN DESPAIR A few years ago, I read Khaled History suggests that Esther was an Hosseini’s book, A Thousand orphan who was raised by Mordecai – a Splendid Suns. Though I didn’t relative of Esther, but it is unclear think that he could top his book whether he was her uncle or entitled, The Kite Runner - he did. A cousin. Yet both Mariam and Laila realized that at times, personal risk and sacrifice are needed to ensure a semblance of hope for themselves and a better future for generations still to come.

There are many modern-day novels, television shows, and podcasts that inspire us with stories of women’s courage and the desire to triumph in the face of potential tragedy and unrelenting despair. We also find such inspiration within our sacred texts. Could Moses, Aaron, and Joshua have fulfilled God’s commandments without the enthusiasm and leadership of Miriam? Isn’t Ruth’s unwavering faith a model for us all? And with Purim just around the corner, arguably the strength and courage to save the Jews from the evil tyrant Haman is exemplified by Esther.

As we retell the story of Purim this year, may we gain an even greater appreciation of the heroines among us. May we understand that in order to create a better world for our children, grandchildren, and countless generations still to come, we must not only be aware that injustices exist, but rather education is needed to become effective advocates for equality, voices for the voiceless, and models of courage to end senseless hatred. I am honored to have been appointed Chairman of the Nominating Committee. It is that time of year when our Nominating Committee convenes to fill the seats of retiring Board Members, and we're looking for you! Have you ever considered being on Congregation Beth Judea's Board of Directors? Why did I become a Board Member? I have been a member of the synagogue since 2003. I had always been impressed by the inspiring services and outstanding education that the synagogue provided to my family. Then, in 2010, my father passed away and I started going to minyan every day to say kaddish. I joined a committee and then the Board. My favorite part of serving on the Board and eventually as President has been the opportunity to help shape the synagogue for our future. Now, more than ever, it is so imperative that our community has a Jewish voice. CBJ is that voice!! If you are remotely considering becoming a board member, the first part of the process is to answer the following questions: 1)

How long have you been a member of CBJ?

On which committees have you previously or currently served, at CBJ or another synagogue?

Why do you have a desire to be of service as a member of the Board of Directors?

What areas of the synagogue are you most interested in? How would you envision participating in pursuing that interest?

Beth Judea Fundraiser

Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of America and the State of Israel.

B’nei Mitzvah Bios Charley Finn will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 12, 2022. Charley is an awesome seventh-grader at Cooper Middle School. Charley has been part of the Beth Judea family since pre-school. Her favorite activities include singing and performing in plays and hanging out with her friends. Charley has spent the past four summers at Camp Chi, her home away from home.

Charley is the best sister to Allison and Abbey and is blessed to have the support of her Mom and Dad and wonderful grandparents, Barbara Finn and Alan and Leslie Raffel. Her Bat Mitzvah is dedicated in memory to her inspirational Papa Bruce, who devoted his life to his grandchildren. Charley thanks all of her friends and teachers for their help in making her Bat Mitzvah so meaningful.

Sophie Lichtenstein will be called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on Saturday, March 19, 2022. She is excited to share this simcha with her friends and family who will be attending (in person and via live stream) from near and far.

Sophie is a seventh grade high honor roll student at Hawthorn Middle School North in Vernon Hills. Along with school, she dives through the Patriots Aquatic Club at Stevenson High School, plays saxophone in her school band, attends Hebrew school at CBJ with her friends, and has been preparing for her Bat Mitzvah. For Sophie's mitzvah project, she will be collecting adult and children’s clothing donations for ORT. She will be collecting donations at her Bat Mitzvah celebrations and will be accepting donations during the month of March. To donate, feel free to email her at t.lichtenstein@comcast.net and she will arrange a pickup. Sophie is grateful for the friends she has made in middle school, Hebrew school, and diving. She would especially like to thank her parents, Margaret and Todd, and her older sister, Alyse, for their love and support in helping her reach this milestone. The Lichtenstein family would like to thank Natalie Gurin, Cantor Bat Sara, and Rabbi Zimbalist for their tutoring and assistance. We would also like to thank all of Sophie’s Hebrew school teachers.

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know. 



If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.

Sisterhood

Hope Valley is the story of two women, one Jewish-Israeli and one Palestinian-Israeli, who come together to form the unlikeliest of friendships. Tikvah and Ruby meet one summer day right before the outbreak of the 2nd Intifada in the Galilean valley that separates the segregated villages in which the two women live. The valley Ruby’s father had called Hope came to symbolize the political enmity that has defined the history of two nations in this troubled land and which has led to parallel cultures with little meaningful interaction between them. Tikvah, a fifty-two-year-old artist from Long Island, is the daughter of Holocaust survivors and was raised in a loveless and lifeless household. Ruby, a world-renowned Palestinian-Israeli artist, returns to her childhood village from a life abroad to be treated for her worsening cancer. At first, Ruby pursues Tikvah’s friendship to get into Tikvah’s house and retrieve the diary Ruby’s father had left behind when his family was expelled from that same house in the 1948 war. But as their friendship grows, they not only open up to each other’s narratives and humanity but uncover secrets from their own lives. Tikvah’s and Ruby’s stories show both the strength and fragility of family ties, the power that trauma and fear has in shaping our lives, the strength we muster to face death and suffering, the vicissitudes of marriage, and the glorious meaning of friendship. Their lives tap into the primal need for connection, as well as the rich and transformative bonds that can be formed from synchronistic encounters. In Hope Valley we meet two strong women from nations in conflict, who circle each other and, in recognizing each other's pain, offer us hope that fear and resentment can grow into love. Men’s Club Greetings from the Men’s Club. As things seem to be getting better in terms of Covid-19, I am hoping that we will be able to have some in-person programs in the coming weeks and months. For now, there is not much happening in March but, please make sure you continue to read your weekly emails for upcoming events. Thank you again to Orin Rotman for hosting another Tap the Torah. He led an interesting discussion on the topic “I, Robot.” Orin always seems to find thought provoking topics that are outside the box and this one was no exception. We will be having one more Tap the Torah this year, hopefully in person, on Wednesday May 11. I know he is not only working on a topic but also a guest presenter. On Sunday February 13, we once again had our annual World-Wide Wrap. This year, Seth Goldberg, Robert Levy, and Sam Sussman put the program together with help from Norm Kurtz and Orin Rotman. We had the Dalet and Heh classes participate in the building, while an additional 20+ people were on Zoom. Robert, Sam, and Seth did a fantastic job incorporating traditional prayer with video to create a fresh take on the program. While Sam was leading the service, Seth was signing, and Robert was overseeing all the technology. One of the highlights of the program was a video that Robert took with his parents, who discussed their immigration to this country from Russia and how Judaism has played an important part in their lives. It was very inspiring.

As I mentioned in last months article, the Midwest Region retreat will be May 13-14 in Bloomington, IL. As of this writing I do not have any of the details but please keep an eye on your email, as we should know more very soon. Another Midwest Region event is the annual Man of the Year/Youth of the Year presentation. I am honored to announce that our Man of the Year is Alan Marcus. Alan is one of those guys who always seems to step up when he is asked. Whether it is heading up a program for our club retreat or filling in for the floor gabbai on Saturday morning, Alan always seems to find time to help. And I would be remiss if I didn’t acknowledge he is also our Shabbat bar tender. Mazel Tov Alan on this great honor. This year we will be having an in-person celebration at Congregation Beth Hillel B’nai Emunah in Wilmette. It will be outdoors, and attendance will be limited but it will also be livestreamed. There will also be an ad-book to make donations to honor our nominees. As you may have seen in some recent emails from the synagogue, the Men’s Club along with the Sisterhood, CBJ, and our friends at The Niagara Foundation have undertaken an incredibly special project. We will be sponsoring a refugee family that will be immigrating to the Chicago area. Thank you to Norm Kurtz for working with Marilyn Rebnord to get this program off the ground and to Steve Frost for being the Men’s Club liaison. Please keep an eye on your email for more information as we will need donations to help this family get settled. On Sunday April 3 we will once again be packing Yom HaShoah candles. This year, we may be able to pack and distribute them in the building. As always, we will need volunteers to not only pack but also to deliver them. We will be sending out information regarding both. I am hoping that we not only can count on our past volunteers, but that we can get some new ones as well. Finally, Men’s Club Shabbat has been scheduled for Saturday June 2. While it may be a little ways away, if you are interested in participating by reading Torah or the Haftorah or would like to do something else, please reach out to our Ritual VP Jerry Sakol.
