Jewllennialz

Boomers

The Jewllennialz most recently put together what we called a "Kabbalah Cookout" on October 17, where thirteen of us got together in the Beth Judea parking lot, had some delicious barbecue and snacks prepared by our CBJ Caterer Karen, and learned about Kabbalah from our very own Cantor BatSarah. Spirited discussion and tasty desserts were had by all well past sundown! We had a great time at our first in-person Jewllennialz event and hope to organize more just like it in the near future. Thank you again to Cantor Bat-Sarah for her engaging presentation!

All Congregation Beth Judea members age 55 and over, are welcome to participate.

HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know. 

If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.

We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others .

If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood As both the daylight and the temperature decrease, we hope that the love of family and friends during this holiday season and the upcoming joy of the Festival of Lights bring warmth and joy into your homes. Once again, the Sisterhood of CBJ has had a busy month. We would like to thank several of our members for planning and running successful events. Thank you to Lori Finn and her committee for the membership event called “Cabaret Potpourri.” Everyone enjoyed the entertainment as well as the goodies that were distributed to people’s homes. Thank you to Sherry Weinberger for organizing a meaningful and timely educational event with an emphasis on gratitude, presented by Rebecca Minkus-Lieberman of the Orot Center. Thank you to the wonderful CBJ Sisterhood Gift Shop team Ann Lerman, Debbie Dubin, Sari London, and Effie Kudlowitz, and their dedicated volunteers for working so diligently to host an afternoon of Hanukkah shopping. The event was so beautifully presented and was a huge success!

We are proud of our CBJ Sisterhood members who took part in the congregational Covid 19 Pediatric vaccine event. Thank you to Ann Lerman, Kim Mann, and Paula Carter for their participation in this important effort for the community. We look forward to an engaging December, including a Hanukkah Jewpardy event planned by Elizabeth Laden-Gross and her committee. In an effort to further support the synagogue, please keep in mind that Jean Friedman is available to take gift card orders. And in our efforts to support the Jewish Theology Seminary, we hope that you will contact Andrea Heiger, who can help you make a donation or order a tribute card. We hope to see you at our events! It is your involvement that makes our group thrive. Best wishes for a full and speedy recovery to Rabbi Zimbalist. We look forward to his return to the synagogue. Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. As I am writing this, Thanksgiving is just days away and Hanukkah is not that far behind. I hope you all had a nice Thanksgiving and are enjoying the Festival of Lights. This month’s article will be relatively short, as we don’t have that much going on in December, but I hope you can take advantage of what we do have planned. On October 31, we once again distributed Hanukkah candles and supplies to our volunteers for delivery to the congregation. Thanks go out to our volunteers Joey Kesner, Orin Rotman, Sandy Levitt, Brandt Rosen, Brian Schwartz, Merrill & Lindsey Gad, Chuck Walcer, Barbara Stark, Stacy Sachs, Marty Rothenberg, Evan Rumack, Sandy Victor, Norm Kurtz, Ron Friedman, Kevin Spitz, Paul Zucker, Jerry Sakol, and Alana Cooper for your help with this. The money we raise from this mitzvah goes toward purchasing siddurim for the Aleph students and supporting the CBJ youth program. I know we have been talking about the club retreat for quite a while, but it is now only a couple of weeks away. As of this writing, we have 30 guys who will be making the trek up to the Ridge Hotel in Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. I have spoken to our chairs, Brandt Rosen, Steve Limer, and Alan Friedlander, and they assure me that everything is in place and a good time will be had by all. In next month’s article, I will let everyone know what happened, and if you haven’t signed up this year, please think about attending in 2023. In last month’s article, I mentioned that we were in the preliminary stages of putting together a joint program with the Congregation Beth Shalom Men’s Club. I am happy to report that we will be moving forward with this and, as of this writing, we will be going to a Chicago Wolves game in February. Thank you to Steve Limer for representing CBJ. As soon as we have more information, we will let you know. On behalf of the Men’s Club, we wish Rabbi Zimbalist a refuah shlema and a speedy recovery. That’s it for now. If you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. Chag Hanukkah Samech, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
