NOTES FROM THE CANTOR RELIGIOUS SCHOOL THRIVING It’s Spring in the Religious School, no matter what the weather is outside! We’re singing Dayenu and the Four Questions, and preparing for the celebrations that come with the conclusion of the schoolyear.

CANTOR BAT-SARAH

Our children and their families have been incredibly flexible this year, showing a deep commitment to Jewish education and community. We began the year with in-person Sundays and online Tuesdays, to be maximally flexible while having as much face-to-face time with each other as possible. In January, as the Omicron wave hit, we briefly went to a completely on-line program, returning to completely in-person instruction in time to celebrate Purim. It was such a blessing to see families return to the building for a really great Purim carnival. The next two months will be filled with opportunities for students and their families to spend quality time together involved in Jewish experiences and learning. The Dalet class families kicked off their B’nai Mitzvah year with learning sessions from Moving Traditions. Gimmel and Heh class families have sessions

upcoming. First and Second grade families are looking forward to their Ma’ot Chittin food deliveries for Passover. Aleph class will be celebrating mastery of the Aleph-Bet and receiving their own siddurim in April, and in May, the Aleph and Bet classes will be leading Friday night services and the Gimmel and Dalet classes will be attending our school Kallah at Camp Nageela.

Jewish tradition has always laid special emphasis on communal involvement. It is woven into the very fabric of Jewish life and prayer. There are prayers which cannot be recited without a prayer quorum of 10 adults (minyan), and there are celebrations like a Passover Seder which only feel complete with multiple generations present. I believe that this tradition of collective caretaking, of both collective mourning and celebration will be very important in helping our children, as well as ourselves, to process what we have been going through these past years. I am so proud of and thankful for the flexibility and the committed support of our CBJ Religious School families. Cantor Elizabeth Bat-Sarah

Congregation Beth Judea Mission Statement Congregation Beth Judea is a welcoming egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principals of the Conservative movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States of America and the State of Israel.

Yom HaShoah MEN’S CLUB To the Beth Judea Community: Each year our Men’s Club provides our CBJ families with yellow candles to light in memory of the victims of the Shoah (the Holocaust). During the Holocaust, the Nazis and their collaborators murdered 1.5 million Jewish children under the age of 16. Unfortunately, lost in this statistic is the tragedy of each and every individual child who was murdered. This year, as we have done in the past, Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club again hopes to underscore the horror of the Shoah by providing each Synagogue family with the name of a young victim who may not have any surviving relatives to light a candle in their memory. The name, age, and place of death for that child is attached to the candle you received. The lighting of a memorial candle for the dead is a long-held Jewish tradition. That’s why during the week of shiva, and on the eve of a yahrzeit, we kindle a light as a symbol of continuing presence of the dead in our lives. During the Shoah, the symbol the Nazis used to identify Jews for persecution and eventual death was a yellow star, a patch sewn onto a Jews outer garments. The candle we light in memory of the victims of the Shoah is yellow for that reason. We use this little bit of a symbol of their suffering to sanctify their deaths.

Yom HaShoah Holocaust Remembrance Day

Yom HaShoah falls on April 28, 2022. Light the candles the evening of April 27, 2022.

Yom HaShoah (Holocaust Remembrance Day) falls on 27 Nisan (April 28) this year. Please attend morning minyan on that day to say Kaddish for a child of the Shoah. Alternatively, please attend services on April 23, which is the last day of Pesach, when we also recite Yizkor. And please do not forget to light the Yellow Candle on the evening of April 27. One of the functions of a synagogue is to make it possible to remember our shared tragedies. By lighting the Yellow Candle, we remind ourselves that unspeakable evil was not limited to the Shoah and that we commit ourselves to preserving its memory as a caution against future evil. If you would like to make a contribution to offset the cost of providing these candles, it would be greatly appreciated. In the past, the envelopes that we have provided for a contribution have included a Meditation that is to be said when lighting the candle. This year, our envelope does not have that, but we have included it on a separate sheet of paper. If you will be making a contribution, please make the check out to the Congregation Beth Judea Men’s Club. May the memory of all those that lost their lives during this horrendous time be for a blessing.

2022 BETH JUDEA’S MEN’S CLUB MAN & YOUTH OF THE YEAR ALAN MARCUS 2022 Beth Judea Men’s Club Man of the Year Alan Marcus grew up in in the Northwest Suburbs. He and his family were active members of Congregation BJBE (then located in Glenview), where he was profoundly influenced by his great teacher, Rabbi Mark Shapiro (z”l). Alan married his wife, Marcie, in 1993. They joined Congregation Beth Judea shortly after moving to Buffalo Grove in the summer of 1997 and adopted their son, Ross, in 2002. Alan became active in CBJ’s Men’s Club shortly after joining the congregation. He owes debts of gratitude to Norm Kurtz for getting him involved and the late Burt Fishman (z”l) for his invaluable mentorship. Alan’s past service to CBJ Men’s Club includes terms first as recording secretary and then ritual vice president. He has continued to serve the Men’s Club in a variety of miscellaneous capacities after his terms expired and was honored to receive the Man of the Year Award in 2001. Most recently, Alan created and coordinated a Hearing Men’s Voices Program, entitled “Helping the Next Generation Learn From Us,” that focused on transitional leadership issues as part of last December’s CBJ Men’s Club winter retreat. He has also devised and coordinated various other programs, including one that brought a sofer to teach about his craft as part of the World Wide Wrap. Alan is also involved in numerous ritual activities, including serving as an assistant floor gabbi. He also leads Torah discussion groups and Alternative Minyonim whenever the regular leaders are unavailable. However, Alan most enjoys serving as the shul bartender after Saturday morning Shabbat services and other special occasions, including Purim. He always makes sure that non-alcoholic choices are always available for those who wish to have them and will be happy to pour you the L’Chaim of your choosing during your next Shabbat visit to CBJ. Alan is grateful to the CBJ Men’s Club for bestowing this great honor on him and wishes to thank the clergy and staff CBJ, as well as his family and friends, for their support.

This year Brooke is serving on Chicago’s Regional Executive Board as the Communications Vice President for CHUSY. Within the CBJ community, Brooke has become a welcoming face. HESED COMMITTEE Congregation Beth Judea is more than just a building. It is a caring community, and we are here to help each other in times of need. The Hesed committee consists of dedicated volunteers who want to support our congregants when they need it most. As such, we offer a variety of services that we hope will be helpful to our CBJ congregants. The committee has five (5) sub-committees, outlined below, that would welcome the opportunity to be of assistance. Please let us know if you need assistance by calling the synagogue office or emailing the Hesed chairs Marilyn Green-Rebnord or Evan Rumack at hesed.cbj@gmail.com. Confidentiality is one of our major concerns, so please do not be embarrassed to ask for our help. Only our chairs and the volunteer will know. 

If you are ill — and give permission to our clergy or office staff — we will try to have a committee member call to see how you are doing and if you need anything. This may include a hospital, rehab facility, home, or skilled nursing care visit during your illness. If you need help getting to a doctor’s appointment, religious services, synagogue programs, or such errands as prescription pickup, our committee is set up to help you. While we may not always be able to make such arrangements, we will do our best. Should you have a loss, we will try to arrange for a committee member to stay at the shiva house during the funeral service so the house will not be unattended, and no family member or friend need miss the service. We will be there to accept deliveries, but not to set up the kitchen. Rabbi will ask you if you would like this help when he is contacted. For security reasons, you will be told in advance who is coming to your home. Should you need, the committee will try to arrange to attend the evening minyan at the shiva home to ensure that a minyan is present to enable mourners to say kaddish. Minyan leaders are also willing to help. At the end of shloshim, we will contact you to check in during your bereavement. It is our intention that this period will be marked during the evening minyan by acknowledging your loved one’s name and by dedicating the reading of a psalm to them and inviting you to the service.

We would like to thank our current committee members for their commitment to helping others .

If you have any questions or wish to join us, please contact Marilyn Green-Rebnord (847-8217740) or Evan Rumack (847-253-4130).

CBJ Business Directory Advertising Opportunity

The primary purpose of the shiva tradition, or "sitting shiva," is to create an environment of comfort and community for mourners; it helps guide friends and family members through the loss of a loved one. Throughout the weeklong shiva period, mourners come together in one family’s home to offer their condolences and support. From a practical standpoint, the shiva process and practices associated with Jewish mourning add comfort to the life of a mourner following a death. In the period after suffering a loss, a mourner may be comforted by the structure and routines prescribed by traditional Jewish mourning laws.

Sisterhood Dear Fellow Congregants, As we look forward to warmer weather and the Pesach holiday, we hope that you and your families are all well. Sisterhood would like to express our deepest sympathies to Cantor Bat-Sarah for the loss of her beloved mother. We know that her memory will be for a blessing by the way that her joyous spirit is embodied in the love and caring that Cantor shows to all of us. We would like to begin by thanking the ladies who have worked to keep our members involved and engaged as we continue to meet and socialize virtually. Thank you to Renee Kaplan and her committee for planning and executing a fun afternoon of Virtual Mah Jongg. And thank you to Elizabeth Ladin-Gross and her committee for planning the Virtual Murder Mystery. We know that everyone who participated appreciated their great efforts. We are looking forward to the Torah Fund event, chaired by Andrea Heiger, along with her committee. We will enjoy an afternoon of meditation and gentle movement as we focus our attention on the meaning of Rosh Chodesh and shmita with Rabbi Heather Altman. Please join us on May 1 from 3-5:00pm. Information is forthcoming regarding Zoom or multi-access presentations. We are excited about our Spring Program! We will be entertained by the Bubbe and Zaide show, an improv group that will bring laughter into our homes with a Passover themed show. The event will be virtual on April 4. Watch for flyers for time and RSVP information. We continue to be in awe of Ann Lerman and her Gift Shop team. They have successfully maintained the profitability of the gift shop, offering meaningful shopping experiences to all. Please visit the Gift Shop on Tuesdays 4pm-7pm and Sundays 9am-12pm. They are excited about the Gift Shop re-opening and look forward to fulfilling your Pesach needs. Much appreciation to Jean Friedman for all she does to raise money for the synagogue by encouraging gift card sales and arranging deliveries of the cards. As always, we thank Sari London and Andrea Levitt, our PADS co-chairs, for ensuring that we offer support to the less fortunate in our community. We look forward to your continued support of Sisterhood and hope to see you at events in the future. Please reach out to Darlene Bikshorn, Michele Sussman, or Debbie Limer if you would like to join a committee or our board. All are welcome and appreciated. Sisterhood

Hope Valley is the story of two women, one Jewish-Israeli and one Palestinian-Israeli, who come together to form the unlikeliest of friendships. Tikvah and Ruby meet one summer day right before the outbreak of the 2nd Intifada in the Galilean valley that separates the segregated villages in which the two women live. The valley Ruby’s father had called Hope came to symbolize the political enmity that has defined the history of two nations in this troubled land and which has led to parallel cultures with little meaningful interaction between them. Tikvah, a fifty-two-year-old artist from Long Island, is the daughter of Holocaust survivors and was raised in a loveless and lifeless household. Ruby, a world-renowned Palestinian-Israeli artist, returns to her childhood village from a life abroad to be treated for her worsening cancer. At first, Ruby pursues Tikvah’s friendship to get into Tikvah’s house and retrieve the diary Ruby’s father had left behind when his family was expelled from that same house in the 1948 war. But as their friendship grows, they not only open up to each other’s narratives and humanity but uncover secrets from their own lives. Tikvah’s and Ruby’s stories show both the strength and fragility of family ties, the power that trauma and fear has in shaping our lives, the strength we muster to face death and suffering, the vicissitudes of marriage, and the glorious meaning of friendship. Their lives tap into the primal need for connection, as well as the rich and transformative bonds that can be formed from synchronistic encounters. In Hope Valley we meet two strong women from nations in conflict, who circle each other and, in recognizing each other's pain, offer us hope that fear and resentment can grow into love. Men’s Club Shalom from the Men’s Club. Spring is in the air, which means Passover isn’t too far away. It’s hard to believe that soon we will be sitting down with our families and friends to celebrate the Israelites being freed from slavery in Egypt and making their way through the desert to establish a new society in the Promised Land. There are many things going on this month, so I hope you can join us. On Sunday, April 3, we will once again be packing Yom HaShoah candles. This year, we will be able to pack in the building. The packing begins at 10:00 AM in the Sanctuary. As always, we will need volunteers to not only pack but also to deliver them. You should have seen the email(s) that were sent out with the link to sign up for both packing and delivering. I am hoping that we not only can count on our past volunteers, but we can get some new ones as well. As I mentioned in past articles, the Midwest Region retreat will be May 13-14. It will be at The Chateau Hotel and Conference Center in Bloomington, IL. As of this writing, we are waiting for information on signing up, but as soon as we get it, we will pass it on. The Men’s Club will be offering a subsidy for both first timers and seasoned veterans, so please put this on your calendar. Another Midwest Region event is the annual Man of the Year/Youth of the Year presentation. In last month’s article I announced that Alan Marcus will be receiving the Man of the Year award. I am happy to announce that this year’s Youth of the Year is Brooke Robbins. Brooke is a senior at Stevenson High School and will be attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the fall. Brooke has been involved with USY since she was an eighth grader and has held many positions including Chapter President. Currently she is Communications V.P. for CHUSY. Mazel Tov Brooke on this very special honor. As I have mentioned, this year we will be having an in-person celebration at Congregation Beth Hillel B’nai Emunah in Wilmette on May 22. It will be outdoors, and attendance will be limited, but it will also be livestreamed. There will also be an ad-book to make donations to honor our nominees. Please consider purchasing an ad to honor our recipients. We will be sending out information and a link for this. By now I am sure that you have seen the various emails regarding our refugee sponsoring project. For those who have not, the Men’s Club along with the Sisterhood, CBJ, and our friends at The Niagara Foundation have undertaken an incredibly special project. We will be sponsoring a refugee family that will be immigrating to the Chicago area. As of this writing, we have been notified that we have been assigned a family. They are from Guatemala and consist of a mother and her 2 children, a son and daughter. They should be arriving in the next several weeks and we are very excited to meet and work with them. I want to thank Steve Frost once again for representing the Men’s Club in this endeavor. I also want to thank everyone who has donated- whether it was furniture, household items, food, or money. These will go a long way in ensuring that the family begins their life here on a good note. On May 11, we will be having our last Tap the Torah of the year. At this point I know that Orin Rotman is working on putting something together with, perhaps, a guest presenter. More to come on this. As things with Covid seem to be moving in the right direction, we are in the process of planning an inperson event that will include food and beverages (including the adult kind). Once we have the details worked out, we will be sending out information. I, for one, am looking forward to getting together with everyone. Finally, Men’s Club Shabbat has been scheduled for Saturday June 2. While it may be a little ways away, if you are interested in participating by reading Torah or the Haftorah or would like to do something else, please reach out to our Ritual VP Jerry Sakol. That’s it for now. If you have any questions don’t hesitate to reach out to me or Brandt Rosen. As always, please stay safe and healthy. Chag Pesach Sameach, Rob Lipka BJMC Co-President

From The Editors In order for your article to be published in the next issue, we must have it at the synagogue by the 10th of the month! There will be no exceptions. This includes information on disk as well. We need your article as it is important to let the congregation know what your group is doing. Announcements should take the form of articles in The Word rather than separate flyers. The opinions expressed herein are not necessarily those of the Rabbi, Board of Directors or the editors.
