Cemetery Visit – September 1, 2013 One element of High Holiday preparations is to visit the graves of our loved ones. As we recall our own lives over the past year, we also remember those whose lives shaped ours. Rabbi Pivo will be visiting the graves in the Beth Judea section and elsewhere at Shalom Memorial on Sunday September 1st, beginning at 10 a.m., and invites all who wish to join him to do so.

CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA HIGH HOLIDAY HOME SERVICE INFORMATION 5774 – 2013/2014 HOME SERVICE FOR ROSH HASHANAH EVE Wednesday Evening, September 4th and Thursday Evening, September 5th The New Year, like the Sabbath and Festivals, is welcomed in the home with prayer and festivity. Congregational ritual is enriched when preceded by family and friends celebrating at home. The table should be given a festive appearance – flowers and an attractive table will help everyone feel the significance of the occasion. At each plate there is a bit of honey, a slice of apple and a cup of wine. Two loaves of challah are also on the table. On both evenings light the candles and recite the following blessings: Baruch atah Adonay Eloheynu melech ha-olam, asher kidishanu b’mitzvotav vetsivanu l’hadlik ner shel ( on Friday evening add: shel Shabbat ve) yom tov. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by Your mitzvot and commanded us to kindle (on Friday evening add: the Sabbath and) the Festival lights. Baruch atah Adonay Eloheynu melech ha-olam, shehechiyanu v’kiyemanu v’higianu lazman hazeh. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has kept us alive, preserved us and enabled us to reach this season. After the Rosh Hashanah Kiddush is said over the wine and the hamotzi recited over the challah, all present dip a slice of the apple in honey and recite: Baruch atah Adonay Eloheynu melech ha-olam, boray p’ri ha-etz. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who creates the fruit of the tree.
YOM KIPPUR Friday Evening, September 13th and Saturday, September 14th FASTING IN THE JEWISH TRADITION Jewish tradition obligates us to fast on Yom Kippur as an expression of remorse and repentance. It also helps us to achieve the kind of undistracted concentration and introspection that is the essence of the Yom Kippur experience. Moreover, while fasting we identify with the suffering and hunger of all peoples throughout the world. This religious obligation, however, applies only to those whose health permits them to fast. Worshipers who are in doubt should consult with their personal physician before beginning the sundown to sundown fast. As we consider the religious obligation to fast, it is appropriate to think of those who are hungry involuntarily and participate in the Project Isaiah Food Drive. Children below the age of Bar/Bat Mitzvah should be taught to fast by beginning with a few hours fast and increasing it each year until at thirteen they fast throughout Yom Kippur. The fast begins with the kindling of Yom Kippur candles and concludes with the sounding of the Shofar at the end of Neilah.

HOME SERVICE FOR YOM KIPPUR EVE Unlike the meal held on the eves of Sabbaths and other festivals, there are no special rituals connected with the Erev Yom Kippur meal, because it is eaten before the sacred day begins. The Mitzvot of Hamotzi and the Birkat Hamazon should be observed as at any meal. This meal, which is called Seudah Mafseket (the concluding meal before a fast) should begin early so that it is completed before the onset of the Holy Day. No kiddush is recited. The candles are lit and the following is recited: Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam asher kidishanu b’mitzvotav vetsivanu lehadlik ner shel Yom Hakippurim. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by Your mitzvot, who commands us to kindle the lights of the Day of Atonement. Baruch atah Adonay Eloheynu melech ha-olam, shehechiyanu v’kiyemanu v’higianu lazman hazeh. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has kept us alive, preserved us and enabled us to reach this season.
SUKKOT, SHEMINI ATZERET AND SIMCHAT TORAH Wednesday Evening, September 18th through Friday, September 27th It is a mitzvah for every Jew to participate in the building and decoration of a sukkah which, by tradition, we begin to construct immediately after the conclusion of Yom Kippur. The sukkah may be built in a yard or on a roof or on a balcony. If you are not building your own Sukkah, consider assisting in the building or decorating of the Sukkah at the synagogue or at the home of friends. You are also encouraged to purchase a lulav and etrog that will be used throughout the festival. Those who have a lulav and etrog will participate in processions with the Torah (not on Shabbat and not on Shemini Atzeret or Simchat Torah) during the morning services.
To order a lulav and etrog contact the synagogue office at 634-0777. The following blessing is recited while holding the lulav and etrog: Baruch atah Adonai Eloheinu melech ha-olam asher kidishanu bemitvotav vetsivanu al netilat lulav. Blessed are You, Lord our God, King of the universe, who has sanctified us by Your mitzvot, who commands us for the taking of lulav. HOME SERVICE FOR SUKKOT Eating meals in the sukkah is a most enjoyable way to celebrate this festival. Inviting friends to share meals in the sukkah enhances the joy of the holiday. The Sukkot candles are lighted and the following blessing recited: Baruch atah Adonay Eloheynu melech ha-olam, asher kidishanu b’mitzvotav vetsivanu l’hadlik ner (on Friday: Shabbat ve) shel yom tov. RESERVED PARKING: If you have elected to make a donation for a parking space or have requested Handicapped Special Parking at Beth Judea you will find enclosed your PARKING SPACE ASSIGNMENT, along with a parking permit which will allow you to park at Beth Judea. A map is included with your space highlighted. REMOTE PARKING for Beth Judea for ALL Holidays, except Selichot, will be at both Sam's Club at Lake Cook and Weiland Road or Twin Orchard Country Club on Old McHenry Road, South of Route 22 and North of Robert Coffin. The enclosed PERMIT must be displayed on the 1st and 2nd Days of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur. A site has been assigned to you as indicated on the parking permit and the map that is enclosed. Those who attend B.G.H.S. service may park at the high school only. On days that there are services only at Beth Judea, you may select either remote parking site. Bus transportation will begin thirty minutes prior to the start of services and the buses will continue to run until all congregants have been returned to their cars. For Kol Nidre on Sep 13th buses will begin at 5:00 PM, 90 minutes before services. If you wish to drop your family off at Beth Judea prior to parking at a remote location, please do so only in the lower portion of the parking lot. Only vehicles with handicapped stickers will be allowed onto the upper level. There is no bus service on the evenings of Sep 4th, 5th and 6th but there is open parking at Beth Judea at that time. FAMILY SERVICES - Family Services will be held at Buffalo Grove High School from 10:30 am - 12:30 pm on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Thursday, September 5th and on Yom Kippur Day, Saturday, September 14th. We are pleased to announce that Norm Kurtz and Gregg Pollack will be leading these services again this year. - On the 2nd day of Rosh Hashanah, Friday, September 6th, a service parallel to the one in the main sanctuary will be held at the Holiday Inn Express located at 1550 East Dundee Road in Palatine. The service will begin at 9:00 am and will conclude around 12:00 pm. The service will follow the same outline as the main service at Beth Judea and will use the same High Holiday Prayer Book (please remember to bring them with you). If you are interested in participating in the service please call the synagogue office at 847-634-0777. To attend either of these services, please notify the synagogue office so we can give you the proper label to affix on your High Holiday ticket. Congregation Beth Judea High Holiday Information (continued) YOUTH ACTIVITIES AND SERVICES:

- Tot Service- We will be offering Tot Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Family services at Beth Judea. The service will be 45 minutes in length and geared towards the understanding of children under 5 years of age. The service is from 9:00 - 9:45 am on Sep 5th, 6th and Sept. 14th. Please call the synagogue office at 634-0777 to reserve your space. - Kindergarten through Dalet - age appropriate services will be held in the lower level of Beth Judea. Age groups will be divided as follows: K-1st Grade; 2nd Grade - Aleph; Bet, Gimel & Dalet. Services will take place on the first and second days of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur morning. Bus transportation will be provided from B.G.H.S., leaving at 10:00 AM. Children will be returned to B.G.H.S. by bus at the conclusion of the Youth Services. These services will be held between 10:30 AM - 12:30 PM. KOL NIDRE YOUTH SERVICE (Kindergarten through Dalet) -6:30 pm - 8:00 pm On Friday, September 13th students will participate in an age appropriate Kol Nidre activity, including a service. at Beth Judea and no bus transportation from B.G.H.S. is provided.

- Teen Services (7th grade through High School) Services for teenagers at B.G.H.S. on the 1st day of Rosh Hashanah, Kol Nidre and Yom Kippur day. Services for Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur Day will be from 10:30 AM until 12:30 PM and on Kol Nidre from 6:30 PM until 8:30 PM. There will be bus service between Beth Judea and Buffalo Grove High School 30 minutes prior to and after services on all days, except for Kol Nidre. No bus will be provided that evening.
PRAYER BOOKS, TALLASIM AND CHAPEL CAPS: We do not have High Holiday (Machzor) prayer books available, so please remember to bring your own prayer book to the services. In a house of worship, our attire contributes to the atmosphere of holiness so please dress in a manner appropriate to the solemnity of this season. Remember that in addition to wearing a kipah and a tallit each morning, they are worn at the Kol Nidre service and on Yom Kippur afternoon. Married women are encouraged to follow Jewish tradition by covering their heads and for this purpose "head coverings" will be available. Each person called to the bimah must wear a head covering. ASSIGNED SEATS: Assigned seats will be marked with the last name of the purchaser. Please be courteous and do not remove the name tape nor the reserved seat sign. When you leave your seat, please replace the assigned seat indicator. These seats are assigned for all services, except for Neilah where there is open seating. KOL NIDRE APPEAL: On Friday night, September 13th, we respectfully ask you to pick up and return at the appropriate time your Kol Nidre Appeal Card. These will be available in the foyers of Beth Judea and B.G.H.S. SPECIAL SEATING: If someone in your family should need special seating arrangements (i.e. wheelchair, crutches) please contact the synagogue office at your earliest convenience. Because of limited floor seating at B.G.H.S., we cannot seat an entire family in handicapped seating. We ask that only 2 members from one family occupy those seats.
