RABBI’S REFLECTIONS

IN THIS ISSUE

“The Meaning of a Movement” This October, United Synagogue of Conservative Judaism will celebrate its centennial at its Biennial convention in Baltimore. Congregational leaders, rabbis, cantors and many others will use that gathering as an opportunity to discuss the next hundred years for the Conservative movement. Who are Conservative Jews? What inspires us? What are the practices that we cherish? What are models for childhood and adult education that will work in a time of shrinking Jewish population, diminished affiliation to synagogues and weaker ties to the Jewish community? The challenges are immense, on the national level and here in the Northwest suburbs, yet in some ways I feel it is a propitious time to tackle those challenges in a serious way. By talking about what matters most to us, we can also identify what we are willing to let go of. By focusing on visions for the future, we can re-assess where we are headed and make needed changes to maximize our resources. One example of recalibrating what we do is acknowledging the enormous change that the internet age has had on how we get information and how we relate to one another. One the one hand, instant, constant communication and information access has accelerated the shift from communal involvement to a focus on individual needs. On the other hand, that same technology can be a tool to share information about activities in the community, create new ways for me to reach out to our members through online sermons and webinars, and even (perhaps) to provide live video feeds of services for those who are at home an unable to access religious services inside the building. (continued on next page)

BIRTHDAYS AND ANNIVERSARIES Shabbat Prayers March 1, 2013 – 7:30 pm Those who celebrate birthdays and anniversaries during the month of March will be recognized at our service on March 1st. Our worship will begin at 7:30 pm and will conclude by 8:15 pm. Children of every age are welcome! Daylight Savings Time Begins at 2:00 am on Sunday, March 10th. Turn your clocks ahead one hour before you retire Saturday evening.

UPSTAIRS THOUGHTS The guiding principles that must undergird these efforts are creating meaningful relationships; beautifying Jewish lives, and intensifying our emphasis on serious learning. As long as our devotion to Jewish tradition, to God, to learning and to each other are at the center of our identities, Conservative Judaism will be secure for generations. Without those values, no amount of rejiggering our curriculum or programming will mean anything. In the coming months I want us to engage in our own version of the Biennial conversation. Which are the programs, services and structures that are distinctive and crucial to our survival, and which are those that are peripheral? What things are we doing well, and what things could we do better in partnership with other Jewish organizations? Where are we duplicating efforts and wasting time, effort and money? I encourage you to contact me by phone or e-mail, and I plan to reach out to all of you as well in the coming weeks and months to discuss these issues. In partnership with our Board of Directors, my hope is that we can set goals that will set us on a path of deeper ties to one another and the larger community at the same that we solidify our fiscal well-being.

BAR MITZVAH BIO Daniel Gottfried will be called to the Torah as a Bar Mitzvah on Sunday, March 31st, 2013. Daniel is a 7th grader at Fremont Middle School in Mundelein. Daniel enjoys Tae Kwon Do, technology, video games, playing baseball, and cheering on the Chicago White Sox.

Daniel is very adventurous and enjoys zip lining and water sports. He is also an avid traveler and likes to explore new places. Daniel is looking forward to sharing this special day with his parents, grandparents, brother, sister, aunts, uncles, cousins and friends. Daniel would like to take this opportunity to thank Hazzan Weisberg, Rabbi Pivo and Shira Sender for helping him prepare for his Bar Mitzvah.

I have a very good feeling about the coming year and the journey ahead. I look forward to working together as we build the a synagogue community that will serve our grandchildren's generation as well, or better, than ours has served us.

PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE You may have noticed our new logo on the cover of this month’s Word. We would like this logo used on all correspondence and publications of the synagogue.

RICK DRAZNER, PRESIDENT CONGREGATION BETH JUDEA Office: 847-255-0500 Home: 847-537 3388 Cell: 847-208-3345 E-mail: rjdraz@rjdrazner.com

MISSION STATEMENT Congregation Beth Judea is an accepting egalitarian synagogue whose mission is to create a warm and inviting home that serves the lifelong spiritual, educational and fellowship needs of our members. Consistent with the principles of the Conservative Movement, we embrace Torah and our responsibility to serve and support the greater Jewish community, the community at large, the United States, and the State of Israel.

Hopefully you were one of the approximately 260 congregants (nearly 100 more than last year) who attended the Purim Masquerade Ball on February 16th. This was an outstanding event at Beth Judea during which our congregants and guests had the opportunity to socialize, enjoy the fellowship and camaraderie of one another, enjoy great food and drink, win valuable prizes, dance and sing, and raise a few dollars for the shul. Kol Hakavod to Michael Gluck and Andrew Bauman, the committee chairpersons, as well as to the entire Purim Masquerade Ball Committee, who spent over six months planning this outstanding program. They truly set the bar for excellence in programming at Beth Judea. We also congratulate and thank our King and Queen of the Ball, Orin Rotman and Karen Nagel. We are already excited about the plans for next year. Please don’t miss our next big program on March 3, 2013 the Rick Recht Concert at Beth Judea. Please check our weekly e-mail, website and The Word for all the outstanding programs offered for your enjoyment at Beth Judea. On March 20, 2013, there will be a Special Meeting of the Congregation to roll-out our Planned Giving Initiative. You can discover how you can help ensure the growth and financial stability of our synagogue for the next 50 years. I wish you all a very warm and joyous Passover Holiday. B’Shalom,

B’Shalom,

EDUCATION The two Seder nights are one of the most memorable of the Jewish calendar. Many of us have fond memories of our family Seders. Others just remember the grown ups reading the Haggadah round the table, as our tummies rumbled and we wondered if dinner was ever coming. But the Seder shouldn't be dull… here are a number of ideas to make the Seder fun and meaningful for everyone. The whole aim is to stimulate the kids to ask questions and get involved in the Seder. The "props" -- be it the Seder plate, or the cushions for leaning -- are all there in order to arouse curiosity in our kids and get them asking questions.

COSTUMES: Don’t forget that dressing up is not just for kids. In some communities the father would dress up in white robes, holding a stick with an attached cloth and walk around the table chanting the passage, "We were slave to Pharaoh in Egypt..." THE WHY GAME: Get your kids to prepare as many questions and answers as they can from the Haggadah and write them down ahead of time. Place the questions into a basket. After the Mah Nishtana, you ask one of the kids to blindfold one of the guests. Then the blindfolded one picks out a question from the basket. If the blindfolded one answers correctly they get a small prize. Questions can range from Why do we eat Matzah on Passover? To Name the Four Sons? THE STORY BAG GAME: Get your kids to collect a bag full of small items from around a house -- almost anything will do (i.e. – plastic animals, a plastic crown, a toy car, an envelope, a cup, a jar of red colored water, etc.) Pass the bag filled with the items around the table and get people to pick out an object without looking. Now each person has to connect the item in his hand to the story. PHARAOH’S TELEPHONE: You need an object that looks like a phone and lots of blocks on the floor next to the Seder table. At any time during the Seder, you make a pretend ringing noise – it’s Pharaoh on the other end. According to your improvised one-sided conversation, it becomes clear that all children under 8 have to get down from the table and start building a pyramid. You can get one or two of the older children to be the task masters and shout out orders to work faster, etc. Children love doing this. If you have several children at the Seder, you can do a competition who can build the tallest tower/pyramid. WHO OR WHAT AM I? In advance of Seder night write out on separate pieces of paper the names of characters or objects associated with Seder night. During the Seder choose a volunteer. Tie a scarf around his forehead and stick a name on the scarf so that everyone can see it but him. Now he has to ask questions about himself, to which everyone answers Yes/No until he figures out who he is. If he guesses in five or less questions, he gets a prize. GIVE US A CLUE: This game works like charades. Prepare different verses from the Haggadah ahead of time, and write them on paper. Each participant randomly chose a card. He then has to mime the sentence and the rest of the guests and family have to guess the passage. Have a wonderful Seder that’s sure to delight each and every child!

YOUTH Dear Beth Judea FamilyThis month I bring you an article written by our own BJUSY Programming Vice-President Samie Moskowitz. The article is her reflection back on her experiences in BJUSY and what made her get involved. I would like to take a moment to thank all of the wonderful congregational families for their incredible generosity during the Purim festivities. Together between the Purim Megillah Reading and the Purim Carnival we raised around $2000 for charity. It just goes to show how much good we can do when we all come together for a good cause. This coming month of March is a very busy one for our youth groups. On March 10th the Kadima and Kadinker children are going to be traveling to Rinkside Sports for an afternoon filled with ice skating, arcades, laser tag, and more. At the same time, our USY group will be joining the congregation in packing boxes for those less fortunate at the Maot Chitim Passover box packing. In addition, on the following Sunday, there will be a celebration of our youth concert at Beth El in Highland Park and all of our BJUSY board members will be honored along with the guest of honor, Chuck Kahalnik, and the regional youth commission including our very own Youth VicePresident Joan Smith. All money from that concert will be going to help CHUSY region and will directly benefit all of our youth.

Hello, my name is Samie Moskowitz. I am 15 years old and a sophomore at Buffalo Grove High School. I am your current BJUSY Programming VP. I first joined USY when I was a freshman. I was having a lot of trouble in school making friends. Now that I go every week and am on board it has helped me in so many ways! I am just a much better rounded person. It has become much easier to make friends and accept myself. USY has taught me how not to follow everyone, but to take the lead and make my own decisions. I remember my first program was the last program of my eighth grade year. It was super awkward at first but after I got over my awkward self I realized how amazing everyone there was. They mostly had met me that night and opened their arms like they had known me for my whole life. They quickly became my family and the youth lounge became my home away from home. Now that I have been participating for about 2 years now, I have run a program on my own and helped others do the same. Even if you just have a few Tuesdays open, take it from me, USY changed my life and I know it can do the same for you! Samie Moskowitz 2012-2013 BJUSY Programming Vice-President

This month will also be the kickoff of our third annual “Take Stock in our Youth” campaign. The letters should be in your mailboxes shortly but if you want to get a head start you can fill out the pledge card attached to this page. We appreciate everybody’s generosity in advance as we try to continue running a high powered, best in the nation, youth program here at Beth Judea. February 9th was Sisterhood Shabbat at which time the entire service was led by Sisterhood women. We extend a special thank you to Phyllis Udany and Georgeanne Oman who led the service and to all the women who participated. Michelle Sussman, who organized Sisterhood Shabbat, did a wonderful job and we thank her as well. Our Vashti gala February 18 was a huge success! Elizabeth Ladin-Gross, Ellen Antman, and their committee did an amazing job of procuring services and vendors for this special night of pampering and celebrating women. A wonderful time was had by all. February was also a book club meeting month. Our interesting discussion was on “Walking the Bible” by Bruce Feiler. Thank you Susan Mangurten for hosting this event. Our next book club will meet April 10 to discuss “Once We Were Brothers” by Ronald Balson. Feel free to contact us for further information. We hope you will join us on Sunday March 10 at 3 pm for our 7th Annual Passover Wine Tasting, co-sponsored by Men’s Club, which will be held at the synagogue. Admission remains only $10 per person, payable at the door. It is the best afternoon you can have for such a small fee. Binny’s Beverage Depot and Herzog Winery will have many samples of wine for you to try, and Glenn Simon of Panosh will have wonderful food for us to enjoy. Our Z’havah group is for women in their 20’s to 40’s. Join them for their next event of Drinks and Dessert scheduled for March 11. For further information on Z’havah, contact Jenny Ban at jennyban2@gmail.com. As we begin our Pesach preparations and all the work that entails, try to focus on the joy we experience celebrating with our loved ones. Pesach is a celebration of our freedom from bondage so instead of complaining about all the cleaning and cooking involved, let’s think about how fortunate we are to be able to have so much food to prepare and the freedom to share it with our beloved family and friends. And don’t forget to check out Sisterhood’s L’Chaim, Too cookbook for Passover recipes. It’s available in the gift shop and makes a terrific hostess gift if you’re lucky enough to be invited to a seder, or to give to yourself! Chag sameach!

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s FROM ARLINGTON HTS, IL TO CAESEREA, ISRAEL (Part 13) L TO R: HOWIE GOODMAN, SUZANNE GOODMAN, AND BEVERLY GOODMAN TCHERNOV NEAR EILAT, ISRAEL Howie and Suzanne Goodman were valued members at Beth Judea until they decided to make aliyah in 2009. The Goodmans have agreed to provide us with a blog on their experiences as new olim in Israel. Though we continue to miss the Goodmans, we can all look forward to reading about their adventures in Israel through the blog.

Follow Up to National Elections in Israel (as published in the Jan. 2013 Edition of The Word) This article is a follow-up to the election report that we did two months ago. We thought we understood then how elections work here. However, we have learned even more the last few days. Although the elections will be over by the time you receive this blog, we feel that it's important to talk about how the pre-election occurred and what happened at election time. We learned that ads, both TV and radio, cannot occur until two weeks prior to the date of elections. Since elections were January 23, first day of the ads started January 8. The determination of how many ads you can have is based on the mandate that you received in the last Knesset election. There were many surprises from the election results. About 67% of eligible voters actually voted. The recent US election was about 58% percent. Fifty-eight percent of the eligible Arab Israelis voted. Twenty one percent of that 58% voted for Zionist parties. Seven percent or almost 250,000 votes went to parties that didn't make the 2% threshold. Twenty-seven of the Knesset members will be women, which is an all-time high. There are 48 new members out of 120 Knesset members. And if you count six others who were not in the 18th Knesset, there are 54 new members. Likud Beitanyu received 31 seats. This was a disappointment from the expected 40 plus seats. Yesh Atid, a new party, was the real surprise with 19 seats. This included an American born Haredim Rabbi, Dov Lipman. He made aliyah eight years ago with his wife and four children. He lives in Beit Semesh where a number of months ago some ultraorthodox people were protesting the presence of police after a group of ultraorthodox had berated some orthodox school girls for not wearing what they considered the proper attire. This caused his activism when Dov became upset that the local and national authorities wouldn't help. Authorities said their allegiance was to those that voted and elected them.

(continued on next page)

Page 17

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) We had a similar experience at our Masorti (Conservative) congregation a number of months ago. Dov eventually decided to become involved in a new party called Yesh Atid or "there is a future.” Yair Lapid, a former Israeli TV broadcaster, formed the party. Dov Lipman was slated number 17 on their list and, realistically, did not expect to be in the Knesset. Most pundits expected the party to receive, perhaps, 11 seats. Rabbi Lipman spoke at an AACI (Association of Americans and Canadians in Israel) political debate in Netanya. Some of our congregants, including the synagogue president, attended. Lipman stated that his party believed in religious pluralism. Our synagogue president asked if he would be willing to state the party’s beliefs at our synagogue, and he agreed. We invited other political parties to come, but they declined. Dov Lipman came, as he promised, and again stated Yesh Atid's commitment to religious pluralism. We attended his speech at our synagogue. His party believes either all religious sectors in Israel should receive state financial support or none should receive support. The party also believes in resuming talks with the Palestinians, but Jerusalem should not be divided, the settlements should remain, and Israel should remain as a Jewish State. Another part of the platform of Yesh Atid is that all Israelis should be in the military or perform some form of national service. Schools should either require five basic subject areas or not receive state funding. Dov also believes that Bagrut, or the senior high school national exams, should be eliminated. The schools and students spend months preparing for these exams, and some students hire tutors. However, it has been found that the time spent does not apparently equate to better results. We are discovering the reasoning of voters in Israel. Most people felt Netanyahu's combined Likud Beitanyu party would receive the most seats in the new Knesset but not a majority. What the voters were concerned about was who would be in the coalition. Many do not want the right-wing ultraorthodox to be in the coalition or “peace at all costs” parties on the opposite end of the political spectrum. Therefore, many Israelis vote for the party they want as the second or third largest who represent their viewpoints. Yesh Atid received enough votes for second place. Remember, you need 61 votes to be the coalition. Parties who agree to form a coalition with each other, not individual votes, determine the total votes. Even though the election is over, the real fun has just begun. Each party leader meets with Shimon Peres, President of Israel, and tells him who they feel should be the prime minister. Peres then states whom he wants to try and form a coalition. That party has 21 days to complete the task. They may ask for an extension. Dov Lipman had to renounce his US citizenship in order to be a Knesset member. We don't know if we could do that. Some Israelis feel it is important because if things become difficult in Israel, dual citizenship individuals might return to the USA or other countries where they have citizenship. We don't think we would do that. What would the parties gain from joining the coalition? They usually draw a red line in the sand that if not agreed to, the party will not join the coalition. Also, they can ask for ministerial positions, such as Minister of Defense, Finance, or the Foreign Ministry. There are some thoughts that Yair Lipid, founder and head of Yesh Atid, may want the Minister of Foreign Affairs position. He has already announced that he will run for the Prime Minister position in the next election. Netanyahu has also stated he will run for a fourth time after this Knesset ends. We are not here long enough to make a prediction. We will give you as much information as available before the article has to be submitted. Our guess is nothing will be decided by then. By the way, Kadima, which had more seats in the last Knesset than any other party, now has two seats in the nineteenth Knesset. Therefore, Israelis tell us that we shouldn’t become too excited about a new party. Election Day was interesting. It is a national vacation day and is one of the few non -religious holidays. We received a mail notice a few weeks before the election telling us where to go to vote. It was the elementary school in Caeseria. Just as an aside, all schools, malls, hospitals, office buildings, and public buildings have armed guards at their entrances and parking lots. Even our guide on our Tiulyim (tours) carries a weapon. At the voting site we showed our photo identification card, Tuedat Zahut. They looked up our names and handed us an envelope. We each went to booths that consisted of a table with a trifold cardboard (see photo). All of the parties’ symbols were in boxes. We each took a slip, placed it in the envelope, sealed it, and then went to a box with a slot in it. We then placed our envelope in the box. You can only place one slip in the envelope, and the slips are manually counted. It is amazing how quickly this happens. The morning after the election, the Jerusalem Post as well as Ivrit papers had the results. When we left the booth individually, we had a feeling like we had the first time we could vote in the USA. It is an Israeli thing here to, without any qualms, to ask for whom you voted. Similarly, Israelis have no qualms about asking your age, how much you make, how much you pay for rent or the purchase of a home, how much your kids make, your marital status, or other questions that might be considered personal. A woman knocked on our door last week. She was a realtor and wanted to show our home to a perspective renter/owner. It turned out she was at the wrong house. She then asked us what we were paying per month for rent. Welcome to Israel!

The Word March 2013

Page 18

ALIYAH IN OUR 60’s (continued from previous page) On the evening of February 2, Peres met with Netanyahu. Peres asked him to form a coalition government. It could consist of anywhere from 61 members to 120 members. We already know the Labor party and the Arab parties won't join the coalition. Netanyahu would like to have 81 members. That would allow him to remain prime minister for a relatively long time. Some experts also believe it would allow him more flexibility in his attempt at negotiating with the Palestinians. The chart below shows the major parties and the number of seats. We don’t believe this chart’s description of the rightreligious and left Arab blocs is accurate. Most believe Yesh Atid, Kadima, and Livni might join the coalition. Netanyahu is not required to ask all parties that received enough votes to have Knesset members to join his coalition.

On the non-political side of life here, the shopping malls are full of Purim costumes, the Kinneret level is rising from an abundance of rain, the weather is beautiful, and flowers are in blossom. Last week we went on a tiyul to Jerusalem where we visited the Herzl Museum, Mt Herzl Cemetery, and the Islam Museum. These are places that should be visited. We also had the privilege of attending a b'not mitzvah of twins at the Reform Center in Jerusalem. The windows of the facility looked out over the Old City, which added depth to the meaning of two young girls reaching adulthood in our religion. Their father, Dani Birnbaum, happens to be the CEO of Sodastream. Sodastream had a commercial during the Superbowl. We have attached a link that is about the Sodastream factory in the West Bank THAT EMPLOYS OVER 400 PALESTINIANS. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zl85AL1l0H0 If you had visited the Hula Valley February 4, you could have seen 35,000 cranes stopping at the Agamon Lake. They are passing over Israel as they migrate from Africa to Europe. Millions of birds fly over us twice a year on their trip. We continue to struggle with the Hebrew language. Someone told Suzanne that when she was telling people that we had been here three years, "shalosh sheniam,” she was actually telling them, "three teeth”! No wonder they didn't seem to know what she was saying. Shenayim is the plural of teeth, and shanim is the plural of year. Oh well, layat, layat or slowly, slowly. Shalom to our friends at Beth Judea and an early Happy Pesach!

Howie and Suzanne Goodman We hope you enjoy the tenth installment from the Goodmans, who have graciously agreed to blog for our congregation their experiences as Olim in Israel. WE WOULD LIKE TO KNOW . . . . YOU MAKE A DIFFERENCE If you are celebrating a life cycle event such as a birth, engagement or wedding, we would like to know about it so that this milestone can be included in The Word. If you are ill or know someone who is sick, we would like to know about it so that a prayer for recovery can be said, so that the clergy can call or visit, and so that the Bikur Cholim committee can be notified and be of assistance. If there is a death in your family, we would like to know about it so that we can offer our support, can share this information with our congregation, and so that we can add your loved one to our Yahrzeit records.

We firmly believe that reaching out to others benefits not only the recipient, but the person providing help as well. This is, without a doubt, a win-win situation for all involved. If you are interested in making a difference, please contact one of the committee members below.
