FROM THE CO-FOUNDERS Dear Friends and Partners of BETA, The year of 2020 was one that neither of us could have predicted, the entire world shut-down due to the COVID-19 pandemic. All sectors from education to industry to government were forced to adapt. For BETA, the same was true. With all communications and interactions moving to a virtual format and companies looking to streamline their spending, we shifted to an online summer camp for the first time with limited financial resources. Nevertheless, our team was able to pivot our learning/teaching models to integrate Google apps for learning. We collaborated within and outside of our team to ensure that student kits with materials and supplies were delivered to the participating students across the various islands. This shift had its challenges, as we all had throughout this pandemic, but we were able to capitalize on some of the positives of virtual learning. This format allowed for participation across our various islands at a low cost to those Family Island students. We were able to have participation from Bahamians across the globe, both as instructors and as student participants. The BETA campers had exposure to speakers from across North America who were able to give them a breadth of knowledge on how STEM impacts us here in the Bahamas as well as abroad. Reflecting on this past year has reaffirmed the reality that we live in a global economy, and though we are an island nation, in this digital age we can still have far reaching impacts. It has also reminded us of the importance of being able to survive in this global economy by prioritizing digital access for students while leveraging the various strengths we have as an archipelago. With this reflection in mind, we introduce the theme for our 2021 BETA Camp, Inter-island Connection: Building Independent and Collaborative Island Economies. When the world shut down, so did our number one industry, tourism. We are challenging our students and all our BETA community to consider how our nation can grow beyond tourism. This challenge calls for capitalizing on the various strengths of each island within our nation in order to build robust and diverse economies amongst our islands that will support each other and create global impact. We look forward to working with you as we continue to pivot and grow through this pandemic and build out interdependent island economies! Sincerely,

Trenicka K. Dukes Trenicka K. Dukes, M.Sc.

ABOUT BETA History BETA as an organization was co-founded by engineers Trenicka Rolle and D’André Wilson-Ihejirika in March 2014. They had both been involved in organizing engineering outreach programs in the US and Canada, respectively, and were looking to make a similar impact at home. When the two realized that their passions and interest aligned, they immediately decided to take action. D’André and Trenicka then worked to recruit other Bahamian engineers and like-minded individuals to join their team. Collectively the BETA team is comprised of individuals who are deeply passionate about BETA for several reasons. Firstly, they realized it was only by chance that they entered into engineering because the exposure to it was lacking throughout their primary and secondary education. Secondly, they all love what they do as engineers realizing that engineering in tandem with innovation is constantly changing the world around us for the better. Lastly, many of them have been involved in engineering outreach programs outside of the Bahamas and know that this sort of programming can increase the number of individuals graduating with engineering degrees and entering the workforce both at home and globally. With these tenants in mind the inaugural BETA Camp was launched in July 2014.

Mission

The BETA team’s mission is to use technical expertise to inspire and improve the Bahamas through a series of collaborative efforts that will strengthen STEM education across the nation, create opportunities for engineers and address vital infrastructure issues on our Bahama Islands.

Vision The BETA team seeks to create a future where Bahamians are technically equipped to compete in a global market.

“Change will not come if we wait for some other person, or if we wait for

some other time. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.”

2020 BETA Camp Recap The 2020 BETA Camp was the first BETA Camp to be hosted completely online. We had a total of 44 students attend from Nassau, the family islands, Jamaica, Canada, and the UK. The theme of the camp was Net Zero; Building a Sustainable and Resilient Bahamas.

A total of six engineering disciplines were taught at the 2020 camp which included combinations of: Computer Science and Web Development Chemical and Civil Engineering Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering Electrical Engineering What makes BETA Camp so unique is that it is lead and taught by young professional engineers who each work within the respective disciplines that they are teaching. Instructors this year were tasked with tailoring their lessons to the theme of Net Zero.

This camp was a success and was supported by: Motorola Solutions Foundation Azarae Foundation Cloud Carib URCA.

2021 BETA Camp Overview The 2021 BETA Camp will be our 8th annual engineering and technology summer camp and will take place under the theme “Inter-Island Connection: Building Independent and Collaborative Island Economies.” With the events of this past year and the current COVID-19 pandemic, it is imperative that we educate today’s youth on the importance of a diversified economy and we begin exploring and developing the unique strengths of our various islands. With the uncertainty of the upcoming months, we are currently preparing for a hybrid camp, where we would allow for half of participants to attend in person and half to attend virtually. With this model of preparation, it will allow us to easily shift to a fully virtual camp if need be, or potentially accommodate more students in-person if health regulations allow. This year we will continue to have our main streams of Biomedical, Chemical, Civil/Environmental, Computer Electrical and Mechanical engineering, but will be introducing for the first time a separate stream for Aerospace engineering. In addition to our continued focus on public school participation (serving those from disadvantaged socioeconomic backgrounds), 50% female representation and accessibility for Family Island students, we will also be expanding the length of the camp from 1 week to 2 weeks, increasing the scope to include a prototype building phase of the design project.

Field Tours The field tours allow students to acquire front-line exposure to engineering and technology being applied in real life settings. These tours are strategically planned to have relevance to the camp theme. We believe in the importance for augmenting classroom learning with field experience that not only provides exposure but gives students visibility into the opportunities available in both locally and globally. For this hybrid camp we will coordinating a combination of in-person tours where possible as well as virtual tours.

Technical Expo At the culmination of the camp, there will be an expo to display some of the best projects from each stream of the camp. This is an opportunity for judges, sponsors, and the public to see the technical projects that the students have created in the lessons throughout the week. Additionally, this is an opportunity for students to share the knowledge they have gained. In this hybrid format, the technical expo will be streamed virtually.
