2019 BETA Camp Sponsorship Package Cruise Control: Innovating the Bahamian Maritime Industry

Letter from the Co-Founders Dear Friends and Partners of BETA, Over the past five (5) years we have actively inspired Bahamian youth to innovate using STEM, the widely known acronym for Science, Technology Engineering and Math. Our programming has been both impactful and successful as we’ve executed in multiple cities, both Nassau and Freeport, and have been able to reach students from various islands over the Bahamas, from Abaco in the North to Inagua in the South. Moreover, we’ve had the pleasure of witnessing our BETA Camp alumni start their own science clubs, attend engineering conferences abroad and compete in international technology competitions and not only that but go on to study engineering in college. Our strategic focus at BETA continues to be Diversifying Our Impact. In partnership with organizations like Project Limestone and STEM Group, we’ve been able to expand our camp curriculum and continue our Bright Minds Academy into the school year. Most exciting though, was the launch of our first annual BETA Hackathon earlier this year. This program allowed BETA Camp alumni and students from across New Providence to represent their schools and clubs in a technology competition. The launch of this program was truly a success, one we plan to continue annually in conjunction with our summer camp. As we continue to expand, we are especially excited for this 2019 BETA Camp. This year, our camp will focus on the theme “Cruise Control: Innovating the Bahamian Maritime Industry”. With current projects to rejuvenate shipping ports in both Nassau and Freeport, as well as discussions of developing commercial cruise ports on many of our family islands, this theme is especially relevant in our country right now. And this theme is perfect to accommodate the expansion of our camp to 2 locations, with one session in Nassau and the other in Freeport. As we expand and enrich our programming, we are working to form strategic partnerships with foundations, private companies and government entities who share our vision for a greater Bahamaland through the investment and development of our people through education. We look forward to building the future with you! Sincerely,

Trenicka K. Dukes

Overview of BETA History BETA as an organization was co-founded by engineers Trenicka Rolle and D’André Wilson-Ihejirika in March 2014. They had both been involved in organizing engineering outreach programs in the US and Canada, respectively, and were looking to make a similar impact at home. When the two realized that their passions and interest aligned, they immediately decided to take action. D’André and Trenicka then worked to recruit other Bahamian engineers and like-minded individuals to join their team. Collectively the BETA team is comprised of individuals who are deeply passionate about BETA for several reasons. Firstly, they realized it was only by chance that they entered into engineering because the exposure to it was lacking throughout their primary and secondary education. Secondly, they all love what they do as engineers realizing that engineering in tandem with innovation is constantly changing the world around us for the better. Lastly, many of them have been involved in engineering outreach programs outside of the Bahamas and know that this sort of programming can increase the number of individuals graduating with engineering degrees and entering the workforce both at home and globally. With these tenants in mind the inaugural BETA Camp was launched in July 2014. Mission The BETA team’s mission is to use technical expertise to inspire and improve the Bahamas through a series of collaborative efforts that will strengthen STEM education across the nation, create opportunities for engineers and address vital infrastructure issues on our Bahama Islands. Vision The BETA team seeks to create a future where Bahamians are technically equipped to compete in a global market.

“It is every man's obligation to put back into the world at least the equivalent of what he takes out of it.” ― Albert Einstein, The World as I See It

2018 BETA Camp Recap The 2018 BETA Camp was held in Nassau at Summit Academy under the theme The Smart City Challenge: Innovating the Future of Island Life. The theme was chosen in response to the development and sustainability of future cities, a direction that will dictate the creation of resilient and adaptable cities. The camp provided a full week of project based, hands-on and investigative learning that encouraged students to develop critical thinking, problem solving, analytical and teamwork skills that would transcend the closure of the camp.

A total of eight engineering disciplines were taught at this year’s camp which included combinations of Computer science and Web development, Chemical and Electrical Engineering, Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering, Civil, Environmental and Coastal Engineering. What makes BETA Camp so unique is that it is lead and taught by young professional engineers who each work within the respective disciplines that they are teaching. Instructors this year were tasked with tailoring their lessons to key applications for smart city development.

2019 BETA Camp Experience The 2019 BETA Camp will be our 6th annual engineering and technology summer camp, and will build on the foundation set in the previous camps. In addition to our continued focus on public school participation, 50% female representation and accessibility for Family Island students, we will also be expanding the length of the camp from 1 week to 2 weeks, and increasing the scope to include a prototype building phase of the design project. We will continue to maintain our successful technical streams: Biomedical, Chemical, Civil/Environmental, Computer Science/Web Development, Electrical, Mechanical Engineering and Industrial Engineering, as well as bring back our specialty Coastal Engineering aspects to the camp as a discipline with significant relevance in the Bahamas and to this year’s theme. Our design project will be based on the camp’s theme “Cruise Control: Innovating the Bahamian Maritime Industry” and will focus on current issues related to maritime, including port construction, sea transportation and emergency response.

Summary of Technical Streams Our technical streams are the core of the camp content. Each stream is taught by professional engineering and technologists, with the assistance of university and college students who are studying in related field. This year we will be covering an array of topics which will include the following stream subjects.

Biomedical Engineering Biomedical Engineering is the application of engineering principles and design concepts to medicine and biology. The outcomes of this particular engineering discipline are focused on improving the overall healthcare of society and particularly the lives of those suffering from medical impairments

Chemical Engineering Chemical Engineering is a form of engineering that deals with chemical reactions. This can be in the form of applied chemistry on a laboratory scale, to industrial size processes. Chemical engineers must know and understand chemical principles while also applying the optimization and mathematical modelling of the engineering disciplines.

Civil/Environmental Engineering Civil engineering is a professional engineering discipline that deals with the design, construction, and maintenance of the physical and naturally built environment, including works like roads, bridges, canals, dams, and buildings.

Coastal Engineering Coastal engineering is a branch of civil engineering tasked with organizing, conceptualizing, developing and preserving works on the shoreline. These tasks involve management of shoreline erosion; improvement of navigation channels and harbors; protection against flooding brought on by storms, tides and even seismically triggered waves (tsunamis); improvement of coastal recreation; and management of pollution in nearby marine environments. 8|Page

Computer Science/Web Development Computer science is the study of the principles and use of computers which includes both hardware and software applications. Web Development in particular is a specialization of computer science that involves building web applications on the internet.

Electrical Engineering Electrical engineering is a field of engineering that generally deals with the study and application of electricity. Electrical engineering is subdivided into a wide range of subfields including electronics, digital computers, power engineering, telecommunications, control systems, signal processing, instrumentation, and microelectronics.

Industrial Engineering Industrial engineering is a branch of engineering which deals with the optimization of complex processes or systems. Industrial engineering concepts can be applied to a wide range of industries from manufacturing to finance.

Mechanical Engineering Mechanical Engineering is the broadest of all engineering and encompasses the design of mechanical systems. Mechanical engineers use core physical principles to design and analyze manufacturing plants, industrial equipment and machinery, heating and cooling systems, transport systems, aircraft, watercraft, robotics, medical devices, weapons, and others.

Field Tours The field tours allow students to acquire front-line exposure to engineering and technology being applied in real life settings. These tours are strategically planned to have relevance to a particular engineering stream for a total of 7 field tours, one for each stream or relevance to the theme for the camp which will be the case for this year’s camp. We believe in the importance for augmenting classroom learning with field experience that not only provides exposure but gives students visibility into the opportunities available in both technology and engineering locally.

Figure 4 Image of a group of students from BETA Camp 2019 at their field trip to the Coco Cola Factory.

Technical Expo At the culmination of the camp, there will be an expo to display some of the best projects from each stream of the camp. This is an opportunity for judges, sponsors and the public to see the technical projects that the students have created in the lessons throughout the week, and for the students to share the knowledge they have gained. One of the hallmarks of BETA Camp is our ability to incorporate a consistent infusion of daily hands-on learning to solidify core principles of engineering.

Design Project The Design Project is an opportunity for students in differing streams to collaborate in solving a problem facing our Bahama-land. Students will be split into teams of 5 or 6. These students will meet daily with a camp volunteer; a college of university student who will act as a mentor to the team. The teams will be presented with an issue currently facing the Bahamas and will work together to research and design a solution. At the culmination of the camp each team will have the opportunity to present their solution to a panel of judges; representatives from our sponsor companies and organizations. Judges will score teams on a series of criteria to determine which team has devised a winning solution. With the 2019 theme of “Cruise Control: Innovating the Bahamian Maritime Industry students will work to incorporate concepts from each of the technical streams to show how we can improve the Bahamian Maritime Industry. This could be anything from Coastal and Civil engineering development of ports to energy efficient boats using chemical and electrical engineering, or even improving coast guard and naval emergency response through mechanical and biomedical tools like drones and hospital boats. Student will work together and research the best solutions based on knowledge learned in their streams.
