Eta Tau Newsletter State of the Chapter

Dear Brothers and Friends of Beta,

Even though our president Josh Barney was away on IQP, the Beta spirit has come alive this D-term. We started off the term by holding an excellent retreat that allowed our newly initiated brothers and our newly inducted members to connect with our brotherhood. We painted our letters with everybody bringing their own style to them, had new and improved vulnerability exercises and most importantly, we all had fun while doing it

We have also held our very first, of hopefully many, town hall meetings where the executive board had some hard-hitting questions for the entire chapter These questions ranged from where we see ourselves down the line, our recruitment practices and how we all feel about the current state of the chapter. Through this talk, we have decided that our chapter is in an excellent spot and we need to keep doing what we have been doing. Gabe Buziba has now stepped in as our first ever elected DEI chair position. We have decided that this position needed to be an elected one following the IFC incident back in B-term. He is going to work hard over the summer to make sure that we hold each other accountable and are properly educated on topics related to DEI. We plan on revamping our rush process in which Amitai Erfanian has been hard at work. He has made great strides in ensuring that we get a great rush class this coming fall, so we can add more great men to our number.

Speaking of adding great men to our number, we recently initiated 4 new brothers, Ben Chaves, Ricardo Croes-Ball, Sam Markwick and Ben Skarnes. These new brothers have wasted little time getting active in our chapter with Sam becoming our historian and Ricardo becoming our chorister. We are so excited to have these great men in our brotherhood and I we all look forward to seeing what they do.

Being a Beta is also about having fun and we had lots of it. We had an excellent time at Greek Week. Whether it was watching Dan Rabinovitz perform in Dancing With The Greeks, doing trivia, paddling a boat or dancing our butts off in Zumba Through all this effort, we were able to place 6th, but we had the most fun which is all that matters We were lucky enough to get some great weather this term which allowed for our brothers to have on the quad Whether it was playing spikeball or just chilling and listening to music, they had a great time bonding and having fun. We also had a bunch of fun selling fried oreos in our annual Beta Theta Fries Event in which we raised close to $500.

Brotherhood is a big part in being a Beta, so we are sad to see 5 great seniors graduate, Brothers Adam Ferrarotti, Geoffrey Garsson, Charlie Snow, Dan Rabinovitz and Sweetheart Hannah Kachadoorian. From all the brothers at the Eta Tau Chapter, we are honored to have been able to meet such great people and grow together all these years. We hope to see you soon and can’t wait to hear what life has in store. You will be missed, but not forgotten because in Beta, brothers are brothers for life

Spring Alumni Event

Thank you to all of the alumni who showed up to the spring alumni event. Many games of skeeball, dance dance revolution, and 4 player Pac-Man were shared between undergrads and alumni alike. I had an absolute blast getting to meet everyone and I hope you all had fun too!

Stay tuned for announcements regarding our fall alumni events.

Apple Review

Hello one and hello all! With a break from the newsletter due to completing an abroad IQP, we ’ re back with yet another apple review. This time, I’ll be focusing on an apple from across the globe, Australia’s own Bravo apple! While it was commercially available only recently, in 2016, the Bravo apple’s history begins far earlier than its commercial debut. In the 1990s, cross pollination with the goal to achieve a new delicious cultivar of apple to sell was performed, and of the many seeds that failed to produce notable results, the Bravo apple–a cross between some of Australia’s favorite cultivars, the Royal Gala and Cripps Red Apple–was successfully bred. While it ultimately struggled to reach the success of its parents, the Bravo apple was a moderate success, regularly appearing in the top 15 favorite Australian apples, while its parents often appear in the top 5. Not too shabby if you ask me!

Taking a moderate stance between its two parent cultivars often spells doom for any good apple. However, the Bravo apple manages to navigate that narrow bridge with incredible accuracy. The Royal Gala is firm, fairly large, and moderately sweet while the Cripps Red Apple is smaller, softer, crispier with a more subdued but still excellent flavor. The Bravo apple combines these traits perfectly, leaving the end product of a fairly large apple with great firmness, crispness, and a delicious sweet flavor to hand deliver to the taste buds of those who eat it. The Bravo apple is even an excellent cooking apple with its firm flesh holding shape incredibly well under extreme heats and its sweet flavor making it the star of any apple based pastry. All the while, the Bravo Apple accomplishes this at the small price of $1.50 AUD, which roughly converts to about $0.98 USD! Bravo apples are available in Australian markets from January all the way to June due to the inverted Summer and Winter schedules. Cheap, large, flavorful, and crisp leaves an excellent impression for one of Australia’s golden apples.

Community Service Recap

This D term for community service brothers showed a lot of initiative and volunteered in many different ways including but not limited to the superhero 5K, The Boys and Girls Club, and St. John's food for the poor. Our goal is to get brother involved in recurring CS events such as St. John's food for the poor to ensure that everyone can fit meaningful community service into their schedule. We now have an open invitation from Father Madden to volunteer whenever we can at St. John's food for the poor.
