Missouri Shows That It's More Than Beer and Wine
d
istillers in Missouri are staking claim to the best craft bourbon. And why not? The Show-Me State is the hub of the world’s largest brewery. It possesses a wine country that competes with California’s Napa Valley. Everything we need to make great bourbon is right here. That means Jim Beam and Makers Mark will have to make room for crafters Copper Mule, StilL 630, Wood Hat, and S.D. Strong.

create a Missouri bourbon. That mission accelerated during a visit to Louisville a few years ago, “We get distillers from all over the country—we had people from Texas talking about Texas whiskey, we had distillers from New York talking about Empire State Rye, all of these states had their names on the products.
I’m sitting here in Missouri thinking if anybody should have a product named after their state, it’s Missouri bourbon.” Great minds think alike, and owner Gary Hinegardner owns Wood Hat Spirits in New Florence. “We were importing alcohol into Missouri. That didn’t make sense to me. We have all the resources
here. I went to the East Coast and the West Coast, went to 27 different distilleries. I asked ‘Why don’t people make whiskey in Missouri?’ I couldn’t find the answer so I just decided that I was going to do it.” That pioneering spirit led to the making of official Missouri bourbon.
SHOPPING FOR INGREDIENTS The first step is procuring corn. Missouri just happens to be one of the biggest corn producers in the US. According to CropProphet.com, Missouri was ninth in corn production in the US, with 560.9 million bushels in 2020. “Changing the kind of corn is the most important thing you can do to create the desired taste, more so than changing the water source or other ingredients, or aspects.” Gary says. He has 42 different types of corn in a grain bank, as part of the Missouri Heritage Corn Project with help from the USDA. That helps him develop distinct flavors of bourbon. Bourbon producers in Missouri have another home field advantage—highly desired white oak barrels. Don says, [Missouri] is literally the only place in the world where distillers come [to purchase barrels]. Kentucky can’t do it. Most states can’t. REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE Ancestral brewing and distilling were brought to Missouri by German immigrants in the 1800s. Many settled along the Missouri River valley. Some distilleries reside on farms that have been in operation by the same family for over 100 years. Don utilizes three such family farms for his Copper Mule Distillery. Others repurpose properties for their distilling operation. David Weglarz transformed an unused gourmet restaurant in 2012 into his StilL630 Distillery in downtown St. Louis. Lisa and Steve Strong created their S.D. Strong Distilling inside a cave in Parkville. These distillers and others have shown that they have the ingenuity to craft Missouri bourbon.
MAKING IT OFFICIAL After the creative process was established, there was one remaining step—creating an official designation for Missouri bourbon. The distillers needed backing from the state’s tourism industry. In 2014, BusinessInsider.com and HotelsCombined.com reported that 10 • BREWVIEW

Missouri was 30th among the most popular states to visit, and 34th among the states most interested in travel. Those travel statistics helped convince legislators to get behind the passage of HB 266, a bill that gave Missouri bourbon the official state designation it needed. It was signed into Missouri law on July 11, 2019. The Missouri Craft Distillers Guild spurred tourism with a promotion that reflected the exploration of the Louisiana Purchase by Lewis and Clark. The Missouri Spirits Expedition encourages tourists to visit all 33 member distilleries of the Guild to get a free bottle of bourbon. That expedition was a success. Don says, “Here in Hermann, we now have three distilleries. It’s given people
new reasons to visit Hermann.” The promotion has generated quite a bit of traffic for distillers in the Kansas City area, according to a May 2021 report by KCTV5 News. Missouri bourbon has established itself nicely, but how much staying-power will it have?
MISSOURI BOURBON: HERE TO STAY On the national level, interest in bourbon is strong. Vinepair.com indicates that on-premise dollar sales of bourbon grew 12.9 percent in 2019. In addition, global data firm IWSR (International Wines and Spirits Record) states that bourbon volume sales increased 7.9 percent in the past five years. Why the increase in bourbon interest? IWSR says that the largest percentage of bourbon drinkers is now centered in the 25-54 age group. Bourbon is not just for seniors anymore.

here’s a common misconception that wineries in the Midwest are for summer and warm fall days only. But in Missouri, we know better. A December, January, or February trip to sip your favorite chardonnay or taste a spicy Chambourcin can be dreamy, romantic, and just as much fun as a visit on a warm July afternoon. So here are a few
events to encourage “vinophiles” to drop by after the gifts have been opened and the tinsel is safely nestled in Rubbermaid containers with care. Don’t see your favorite listed? Check its website for the most up-to-date information. 7Cs Winery and Meadery in Walnut Grove invites you to “drink what you like and like what you drink” at their facility
all year long. While there aren’t currently any special events on the schedule, they often host paint and game nights, including Monopoly and Trivial Pursuit. Known for their Sweet Cat Sangria, Route 66 Red, and Celebration Cove White, Meramec Vineyards is as creative with their events as they are their vino. Food trucks, bands, and Lenten seafood feasts are past fan favorites and pair nicely with Silvio’s Red. Noboleis Vineyards, nestled in Augusta, is bustling on any given summer day. So how does it fare when the winter winds blow? Though Noboleis closes January 1 through 27, they reopen daily from 11am-5pm, Friday, January 28. In previous years they have gathered for live music, stargazing, First Fridays, and launch parties. Check the website and Facebook page for updates. Finally, there’s plenty of reasons to visit St. James Winery when the snow flies. After a short winter’s nap, head to January’s Warm-Up Winterfest and Chili Cookoff. This is a day-long shindig with bands, food specials, and vats of America’s favorite soup. In February, there will be a Progressive Valentine’s Dinner. Enjoy a four-course meal paired with either wine or beer, served in several locations throughout two facilities. These events are co-hosted by St. James Winery and Public House Brewing Company. Looking for last-minute gifts, something to do on a Saturday when your team is no longer in contention, or a unique way to celebrate your love? Look no farther than the nearest winery. T
o call 4 Hands Brewing Co. just a brewery is an understatement. Sure, they crank out the liquid gold, but 4 Hands serves a healthy basket of humanity along with pale ales and pilsners. Many craft beverage creators say they “give back,” but at 4 Hands, they mean it. Over the past five years, 51 million ounces of City Wide American Pale Ale has earned more than $250,000 and been generously shared throughout the St. Louis area. After a decade of being a pillar of the community, they still concoct ideas to contribute in innovative ways. 16 • BREWVIEW

The latest collaboration is with Veterans Community Project — St. Louis. This union is so much more than 5.5% ABV and intense artwork; it’s about making a difference to men and women who have made a difference to our country.
THE MISSION 4 Hands is donating a portion of every purchase of State Wide Hazy Pale Ale to VCP. The goal is to raise $50,000 for the planned St. Louis Village. The funds will be used to build a neighborhood of tiny homes for unhoused veterans. Seemingly a scratch on the surface of the issue, VCP does so much more than putting up twoby-fours and shingles. Jeremy Danner, 4 Hands’ brand ambassador and spearhead of the partnership, said, “Solving a living situation is just one piece of the puzzle of taking someone from the streets or unstable living to a permanent home. VCP really works on ‘fixing’ everything that has happened to result in a veteran being homeless. Their approach is exhaustive and includes teaching or reteaching life skills that we all need to feel safe and secure in our own homes.” This association is a rewarding
experience for the 4 Hands folks and customers alike. “I strongly encourage readers to check out the Veterans Community Project website. Take a tour of their village if you’re able,” said Jeremy. “I’ve been on a few tours now, and I’m still over- whelmed by how amazing their people are and how important their work is.”
THE BEER 4 Hands founder and president Kevin Lemp’s mission is making “more than a beer.” He and his team have realized this goal through City Wide and, as of May 2021 State Wide. State Wide is a hazy pale ale with orange, grapefruit, and apricot notes and a blend of Simcoe and Amarillo hops that pairs well with buffalo wings, burgers, and Hawaiian pork tenderloin, or crème brûlée. So far, State Wide has raised about 12% of the goal set by 4 Hands.
THE COMPANY One of the reasons that 4 Hands stands out on the craft beer scene is its openness and authenticity with the St. Louis metro area. Every employee works tirelessly to represent the products and
the organization as a whole that is true to Kevin’s original philosophies. The 4 Hands family loves each other and their work. “I hope that passion shows in everything we do,” Jeremy said. Most craft brewers strive to create distinctive offerings in a unique atmosphere and say they want to support their consumers; however, 4 Hands delivers. Just ask the 20 non-profits who have benefited from their generosity. With their VCP-partnered community events and the release of State Wide, 4 Hands is doing great things. “I can’t tell you how many times I’ve come home from a tasting or event with them and told my wife that I felt like I actually helped people at work,” said Jeremy. “Coming home from an event where we’ve raised hundreds of dollars in an effort to end veteran homelessness feels incredible.” U

St. Louis Bourbon Society BY JOE SIESS
I
n the rolling blue-green hills of the 18th century, Kentucky backcountry bourbon was born. “Recipes” delivered by Scottish, Irish, and other immigrants combined the mineral-rich water with local corn. Then, they fermented it into the sweet, brown nectar explicitly associated with Kentucky. In 1964, the US Government would designate bourbon whiskey “a Distinctive Product of the United States,” creating for the first time an adult beverage that was uniquely American.

Bourbon has changed since the 1700s, and in 2016 friends Drew Chostner and James Thomas founded the St. Louis Bourbon Society. This rich history is part of what encouraged them to create a community dedicated to finding good bourbon. “We are an educational group,” said Drew. This includes the history of various brands and where to purchase them. According to Drew, “All these labels go back hundreds of years, and they are all interconnected amongst each other.”
Over the years, price points and perceived lack of availability have created this myth that bourbon is an elitist drink. “People get fixated on the hard-to-find bottles when there is so much great bourbon right in front of our eyes,” James said. SLBS isn’t just a private group on Facebook. In addition to social media, they have a website, events, newsletter, and tastings to honor bourbon. For Drew and James, the Bourbon Society is about fellowship, learning, inclusivity, and of
course bourbon, whiskey, or any variation of the sort. The meetings take place twice a month and usually consist of a keynote speaker and a question and answer session. “It’s very interactive, and the whole time we get to sip some wonderful bourbon,” Drew said. However, the pandemic threw a wrench in the plan, but that didn’t stop the Bourbon Society from adapting. The group managed to continue its regular discussions and tasting events via Zoom, an adaptation that turned out to be a “big hit.” They managed to work with distributors to put together high-quality tasting kits that members were able to pick up before a virtual meeting. “According to James, It’s quite a cathartic experience considering what’s going on in the world these days. To sit in your living room and still have a hundred faces in front of you and interact, instead of just maybe streaming your favorite show all night long.” The sense of community is a major part of what the Bourbon Society stands for. Their values are expressed in events such as the recent #sharethelove event, where

the Bourbon Society gave away 40 bottles of bourbon to locals who were able to show they spent $50 at any local restaurant or bar. Drew said, “getting people to eat and drink local is important, especially during the pandemic, as local eateries were losing business volume. People had to eat anyway,” He added. “So we tried to get that money back into the local community as best we could.” Additionally, the Bourbon Society celebrates the large but under-appreciated contribution of women in the bourbon industry. In March of 2021, the Bourbon Society hosted a Maker’s Mark event. They donated 10% of proceeds from ticket sales to the Women’s Safe House, a domestic violence shelter in St. Louis. Why Maker’s Mark, you ask? James explained that Maker’s Mark founder, Bill Samuels Sr.’s mother, Margie Samuels, basically built the Maker’s Mark brand as we enjoy it today, all the way down to the iconic red wax-sealed bottles. Her contribution to the industry is impressive. The Bourbon Society highlighted her innovation and gave something back to the community. CALLSIGN BREWING COMPANY Founded by Veterans to Honor Heroes
L
ike most breweries, Callsign began as a dream, the result of a home brewing kit received in 2011. What sets Callsign apart is its mission to help military and first responders with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD). Callsign has raised money for the families of soldiers and first responders and helped fund the purchase of service dogs for veterans with PTSD. This brewery has always aimed to be “bigger than beer,” and moving into a more prominent location allows them to pursue that goal. The upgraded location on Burlington Street attracts additional clientele while transitioning their old customers to the new space. However, the beer they love and the atmosphere they love to drink it are still at Callsign. “Everything that we were at the old location will still be us at the new location,” said Steve, “We are still going to be a great place to sit down and drink a beer.” Once Steve Sirois discovered a passion for brewing, it wasn’t long before this hobby turned into a real business. Together with friend and co-founder

Morris Loncon, they opened Callsign in July 2018. Both men served in the Air Force and have more than 40 years of service between them. The beers are named after fallen aircraft. As the brewery continues to grow, helping heroes remains the focus of it all.
SOMETHING OLD Finding their first location was an important milestone for Callsign, but they knew that location wouldn’t be their home forever. “Within the first eighteen months of being open, I knew [we were] going to need a new
location,” said Steve. There wasn’t much traffic around the original site, and they could see that it would be too small for any expansion. They looked at four potential options and considered the size, location, and cost before deciding on a different address for the brewery. It’s eight times the size of the old site, and they have good street/foot traffic with enough space to increase brewing operations.
...AND SOMETHING NEW With 23,000 square feet of space at 1340 Burlington Street, the new
location opens up all kinds of options for Callsign. They plan to have multiple kitchens and bring in Wolfe Pack BBQ, Johnny Jo’s Pizza, and local chef Chad Tillman to offer food options within the brewery. In addition, they have upgraded to a 20-barrel system, and they’ve added a canning line capable of producing 70 cases of beer in an hour. There will also be 16 beers on tap (four more than at the original location), three separate wine taps, and some local liquors and mixed drinks available. This move is the culmination of everything Steve and Morris have been working towards for the last decade, and it’s shaping up to be something pretty impressive. Rabbits and Goats make Tom’s Town Spirits Restless R ival early 20th century Kansas City political figures have a presence in present-day distilleries. Tom Pendergast is the namesake of Tom’s Town, and Joe Shannon is more subtly connected to Restless Spirits Distillery. During Prohibition, people would travel from across the country to visit the Paris of the Plains’ vibrant party culture, dancing to jazz, and drinking booze. And two guys who helped forge Kansas City’s reputation were Tom Pendergast and Joe Shannon. Tom was a one-term alderman, leader of the Democrat party, and head of a gang

known as “the Goats.” His biggest rival was Joe Shannon. Joe was the kingpin of the Irish neighborhoods and led a crew known as “the Rabbits.” The Rabbits and the Goats feuded for years, neither able to fully rid Kansas City of the other. Eventually, Joe was elected to Congress, and Tom continued his shady dealings until he was jailed for tax evasion in 1939.
“PEOPLE ARE THIRSTY” Tom ignored Prohibition because, as he said, “the people are thirsty.” This has become the motto of Tom’s Town Distillery. Tom’s Town was founded in
2016 by David Epstein and Steve Revare. Neither of them had any distilling experience but shared Kansas City origins, an entrepreneurial spirit, and a love of drinking. In fact, David and Steve are the last people you’d expect to name anything after Tom Pendergast; David’s grandfather was a member of the Rabbits, and Steve’s great uncle was the attorney who put Tom in prison. Nevertheless, they did see the potential in using the name and created a line of spirits that Tom himself would envy. The tasting room is an art-deco paradise, reminiscent of Jay Gatsby’s

mansion. The menu is full of seasonal cocktails, small plates, beer, and wine. The distillery’s lineup includes the official gin of the Kansas City Chiefs, an award-winning doublegrain vodka, a barreled gin, and several bourbons. Tom Pendergast’s Royal Gold Bourbon was a thing back in the day and is now produced and sold by Tom’s Town.
“IRISH SOUL AMERICAN HEART” By contrast, visiting Restless Spirits Distillery is a much more relaxed experience. While Michael is not a descendant of Joe Shannon, his ancestors were higher-ups in the Rabbits. Owners Michael and Benay Shannon, with no prior distilling experience, saw a gap in the market for Irish whiskey and wanted to honor their heritage. They learned how to cook spirits as they renovated their space.

Restless Spirits’ most popular offerings are their Sons of Erin traditional Irish whiskey and Builders Botanical Gin, one of their flagship spirits. They also make several whiskeys, vodka, and Poitín, a traditional Irish spirit distilled from malted barley. Turkey Creek Brewery A Place Where Friends Gather Folks travel to Branson for amusement parks, shows, restaurants, shopping, museums, and now craft beer. The nearby town of Hollister is home to the brand new Turkey Creek Brewery. Owners Scott and Deneen Wuest launched Turkey Creek in September 2021 and already have a following.
CAREER BEER HERE Though the Wuests had no professional brewing experience, Scott was a member of “Them Beer Knobbers,” home brewers with years of experience based in Springfield. He saw a need in the Branson market for a microbrewery. Scott drafted several other Beer Knobbers. While they brew excellent signature beers, he handles the operations side. In addition, Scott continues a career in hospitality management, working for the brewery nights and weekends. The brewers also moonlight at Turkey Creek.

Hollister’s old Red Lion is where Turkey Creek calls home. A classic Irish pub feel with lots of early 20th century, stone building charm. EVERYONE IS WELCOME Scott and Deneen wanted to create a place where friends could gather or strangers could meet. They wanted to become a regional landmark. It seems
to be working as about 70% of their business has been from the area. As Hollisterites themselves, Scott and Deneen wanted to create a space that encapsulates the warm spirit — a place for visitors, friends, and family to enjoy. According to Scott, Turkey Creek’s focus right now is to “ride the horse until it stops.” They want to keep building business and excitement before looking into other opportunities. Their next goal is likely carry-out beer options. The current operation doesn’t support cans or growlers, so their beer can only be enjoyed in the tasting room. Scott is hopeful that with time customers can take Turkey Creek’s beer home. One day they would like to expand. Prepare for Take-Off Last Flight Brewing Company made its maiden voyage in March of 2021 in Jefferson City. Its opening brought the community just what it needed — a brewery! From a carefully crafted beer menu to a cozy indoor atmosphere with outdoor green space and an inspiring story of family bonds, Last Flight is genuinely unique.
TURBULENT BEGINNINGS Last Flight’s founders Jared Cowley and Mark Cowley worked together at a family business for a decade. When the company was sold, “We had to decide if we
wanted to get the same sort of corporate desk jobs we did for the family or if we wanted to try starting our own business doing something we loved,” said Jared. They decided to take a risk and work towards their dream, but they had their work cut out for them. Although the idea of starting a brewery first came up in 2018, making it a reality seemed a long way off. It wasn’t until the middle of 2020 that renovations began on the place that would eventually become Last Flight Brewing Company, and a combination of inspection delays and COVID-related issues pushed the
opening date all the way to 2021. As excited as they were to get their dream ready for take-off, Jared and Mark had to sacrifice to make it happen; every extra moment they put into the brewery was a moment away from their wives and children. As Jared pointed out, “Starting a business is rewarding, but to get it off the ground, you have to put in a lot of hours and hope that it pays off in the long run.”

Last Flight hopes to provide new and exciting experiences, and this starts with concocting flavors. There are sixteen different beers currently on tap, and they are planning to increase that number soon. Winter on the Lake? It May be more fun than you know...
The holidays are over, and it feels like spring will never arrive, let alone the lazy days of summer. FEED THE NEED FOR SPEED Miner Mike’s Fun Center in Osage Beach offers plenty of excitement for mom, dad, and the kids. All the competition
and prizes of carnival games like skeet ball and teddy bears without the creepy carnies. And that’s just the beginning. If you can pull yourself out of the arcade, test your driving skills at the indoor go-kart track. There are age and height restrictions, but a good time will be had by everyone. When the adrenaline wears off, it’s time to pop into Buster’s Saloon for food, drinks, and friendly banter.
FREEZIN’ FOR A REASON Take the plunge for a great cause. Every February, friends, coworkers, and families gather to throw their bodies into the freezing cold lake water. And they enjoy doing it. Why? Because the event benefits training and competition for the more than 16,000 Special Olympics athletes in Missouri. The 27th annual Polar Plunge and 5k Polar Bear Strut are
hosted by Osage Beach and the police department. There’s also the 5k Polar Bear Strut for the entire family. Both the strut and the plunge begin and end at the Lake of the Ozarks State Park’s Grand Glaize Beach. Strut starts at 10am, plunge begins at 2pm.

Each year, thousands of tourists visit Hannibal, Missouri, a thriving community on the banks of the Mississippi River. These tourists come for the scenic waterfront views, the eclectic shopping, and to see the town where renowned American novelist Mark Twain grew up. LITERARY LEGACY Twain spent his childhood and adolescence in Hannibal and used it as an inspiration to create “St. Petersburg,” the primary setting in The Adventures of Tom Sawyer and also its sequel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn. week. The century-old stone building is adorned with fixtures created with reclaimed materials from other historic sites in town. In 2014, Hannibal native Lance Smith and his now-retired uncle, Bill Martin, opened the brewery. Lance saw both a business opportunity and a chance to invest in the town that helped raise him. So he decided to open a space that honored Hannibal’s worldfamous son.
BEER BREWING POWER COUPLE IMPORTED FROM TENNESSEE Shortly after opening, Lance hired beer brewing power couple Dave Alley and Cat Golden from Tennessee. These two quickly made the program their own, introducing their skills and taste into the beer menu. Many of the beers, like just about everything in Hannibal, take inspiration from Twain’s writing: including Sawyer’s Blonde, Clemens Kolsch (Clemens was Mark Twain’s real last name), and Jumping Frog IPA (a nod to The Notorious Jumping Frog of Calaveras County, another of Twain’s novels). Dave and Cat try to keep a diverse but relatively traditional lineup on tap. They’re not against a bit of experimentation — Huck’s Habañero Apricot Wheat beer 44 • BREWVIEW

gained somewhat of a cult following, but their main focus is quality. If it’s not good, it’s not going on the menu. For Dave, in particular, a lot of heart and soul goes into the brewery’s barrel-aged offerings. This program takes a lot of time and care; barrel-aging is a long and arduous process, and if anything goes wrong at any point, he has to start over. However, his efforts have not gone unrewarded. Mark Twain Brewing’s Wee Bit Foggy Scotch Ale won third place in the Other Strong Beer category at the 2021 Festival of Wood and Barrel-Aged Beer. Mark Twain Brewing isn’t just a place to stop and grab a pint. Their food menu is formidable, with eight different appetizers and a smattering of entrees, salads, and tacos. In addition, guests can enjoy the “big-ass pretzel” while they sip a Molly Brown Brown Ale or a Chocolate Coffee Stout. The brewery is also home to a rooftop beer garden and upstairs event space that overlooks the river. Simply put, it’s a great place to relax after shopping downtown at Mississippi Marketplace, America’s Hometown Essentials, Badger Cheese Haus, and Ava Goldworks. he building that Minglewood Brewery calls home was built in 1891, but “old” is the last thing you’d think when stepping into this downtown Cape Girardeau brewpub. The location, originally a Masonic Lodge, claims the perfect spot downtown. Thanks to a little TLC, it fits beautifully with owner Stuart Matthews’s vision when opening the brewery. With passionately crafted beer, an artisanal food menu, and a friendly atmosphere, Minglewood delivers a perfect modern experience.
CRAFT BEER There are currently six year-round beers on tap at Minglewood, including two New England IPAs, an IIPA, a blonde ale, 46 • BREWVIEW

a hefeweizen, and a kolsch. Stuart named Kolsch when we asked for his favorite beer, but it was clearly a tough decision. “All depends on the mood I’m in,” said Stuart. However, with the creative recipes and seasonal beers that Minglewood has offered over their seven years in business, we can see why it would be
hard to pick just one. The fun thing about owning a brewery is, you can create a new beer at any time. Of course, that beer might become your favorite, and it will probably become the favorite of many customers, as well. “I truly enjoy being creative with beer recipes and watching guests enjoy the
final product,” Stuart said. His goal when opening the brewery in 2014 was to bring something new and different to the community, and Minglewood’s craft beers have been a big part of making that dream a reality.
ARTISAN FOOD Of course, the great beer isn’t the only thing that draws people in. “Pizza and beer. Pizza and beer,” said Stuart when asked why people seem to love Minglewood so much. The brewery boasts an impressive food menu, the star of which is the pizza, that pairs perfectly with their craft beers. There’s also a wide selection of sandwiches and salads. In addition, the appetizer and dessert menus have an intriguing combination of classic snacks and creative innovations. On Sundays, Minglewood offers brunch, serving breakfast pizzas and bowls. And to drink? “A selection of beer and coffee cocktails and our big ass Bloody Marys!” They also hope to
expand the food menu further once they can increase the size of the kitchen staff.
AND GOOD FRIENDS Minglewood is all about supporting the community they’re part of by providing a welcoming atmosphere for all and participating in local events. For example, they currently have a recurring engagement with the local running club. Every Wednesday evening, the group enjoys a social run, then returns to celebrate with food and drink. “It’s been a great friendship,” says Stuart, “The local runners are such a great group of people.” But you don’t have to be a runner or part of a group to find a home at Minglewood! The folks at Minglewood are genuinely passionate about what they do. They want to share it with as many people as possible. “If you find yourself in the neighborhood, feel free to stop by for a beer and pizza!” says Stuart. Smoked Bacon-Wrapped Onion Rings Try This At Home! WHAT YOU NEED: 2 Large White Onions 1 lb Bacon Souped Up Salt Free Seasoning T-Malice Hot Sauce Vegetable oil for frying Fresh N Spicy Sauce for dipping
AND THE BATTER: 1 cup milk, or as needed 1 egg 1/2 cup all-purpose flour 2 teaspoons ground black pepper 2 teaspoons ground mustard 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning 3 dashes T-Malice Hot Sauce

Slice onion into rounds, select the largest rings Wrap each onion round in a slice of bacon Season with Souped Up Salt Free Seasoning Smoke at 300 degrees for 1 hour indirect heat Remove from heat Dredge in batter Fry in vegetable oil at 350 degrees until golden brown (3-5 min) Set on paper towel to remove excess oil Drizzle with T-Malice Hot Sauce Serve with Fresh N Spicy Sauce for dipping. www.BrewViewMO.com •

WHAT YOU NEED: 1 Slab St. Louis Style Ribs Ol Red’s Tennessee Vinegar Sweet as Sugar BBQ Rub Mean Molasses BBQ Sauce Foil
WHAT TO DO: • • • • • • • • • • • •
Place slab of ribs on cutting board or sheet pan Remove silver skin on the bone side of ribs Generously season both sides with Sweet as Sugar BBQ Rub Preheat smoker to 225 degrees indirect heat and allow to stabilize Place slab of ribs bone side down for 3 hours uncovered Prepare a foil pack and remove slab of ribs from heat and into foil Add a generous amount of Ol Red’s Tennessee Vinegar to foil pack Wrap rack tightly in foil pack Return to smoker for two hours wrapped Carefully remove foil pack and unwrap rack Return to smoker unwrapped for one hour With 30 minutes remaining cook time baste with Mean Molasses BBQ Sauce • Let rest for about 30 minutes • Slice into individual bones and serve 50 • BREWVIEW

Fifth location of BeerSauce Shop a craft beer & sauce tasting & shopping experience

ans of flavor can soon head to BeerSauce Shop Creve Coeur for their fix of craft beer, artisan barbecue sauces and rubs, small-batch whiskey, and a sauce-focused full BBQ menu. BeerSauce Shop’s fifth location will open at 10453 Olive Blvd in early 2022. Andrew Tessmer, Beer Guy and co-owner of BeerSauce Shop, partnered with the Gustafson brothers, Jeff, and Dan, in 2019 to open the BeerSauce Shop in Sunset Hills, MO. The Creve Coeur location will be the Gustafson brothers’ second shop. It will feature the same unique products that made the first BeerSauce Shop a hit. “When the opportunity presented itself for us to open, own, and operate our own business with its heart being craft beer, BBQ, and whiskey, it was a no-brainer,” Jeff said. “We feel extremely fortunate to be able to bring this second BeerSauce of ours and fifth overall online and the flavor to a new community.” “We’ll have some 60 new beers land on the shelves each week—about 25 of those

are allocated beers that have never been released before. Plus, we’re always finding the latest draft brews to fill our taps,” Andrew says. “Another exciting part of our beer program is collaborating with favorite local breweries to bring original, premium, never-before-released beers exclusively to BeerSauce locations.” All BeerSauce Shop locations rotate more than 200+ house barbecue sauces, condiments, pickles, hot sauces, and rubs. In addition, the Sauce Bar features sauces and bottles for customers to sample, or, better yet, they can enjoy a myriad of sauces on BeerSauce Shop’s saucefocused BBQ menu. “We’ve also added a ton of BeerSauce Shop original sauces and rubs to our arsenal, which folks can try before they buy. Our BBQ menu was designed to accept a wide variety of different sauces and rubs, and give folks something new and delicious to enjoy while drinking and shopping,” Andrew says. BeerSauce Creve Coeur’s BBQ menu features 10 entrees, including the ever-

Ever-focused on welcoming flavor fans, BeerSauce Shop hosts weekly schools in the areas of beer, BBQ, and whiskey led by renowned brewmasters, pitmasters, and distillers.
