Thirty-nine insights, instructions and tales around Berlin’s neighborhoods

The hottest spots, mustsee sights and everything in between

Tutors’ note Due to the global pandemic, the beginning of the new term in fall 2020 proved to be exceptionally challenging. One third of our 40 first semester students were not present on campus when the Introduction to Graphic Design 1 course started. Travel restrictions, lock-downs, and visa issues forced them to participate from their home countries via laptop or mobile phone. Differing time zones meant that some attendees needed to rise early: A student in Mexico had to get up around 2AM in order to join us live at 9:15AM Berlin local time. At the start of the course, each student was asked to create a graphic collage of a Berlin Kiez (German local slang for “neighborhood”). Then, a more handson exercise was introduced; everybody developed their personal Kiez Character. These graphical creations emerged from paper-cut collages, hand drawings, “pixelated” sketches on squared sheets, and digital illustrations. Keep an eye out, and you may recognize one or another of the Kiez Characters depicted in this magazine.

In the second half of the course, our students researched, wrote, designed and edited a double-page magazine spread that introduced specific aspects of the neighborhoods. Some who were not yet in Berlin, working remotely from India, Mexico, Pakistan, and other places, nonetheless contributed surprising insights about their chosen Kiez. All students benefited from international perspectives. Their weeks of engaged, creative work resulted in the offering you now hold in your hands. About Berlin 3 was produced completely in-house at the Berlin international University of Applied Sciences. It was made possible by the extraordinary dedication of the students, who actively contributed to the course. Prenzy The Baby Frenzy

Since the baby boom of 1990, a few areas in Berlin, Prenzlauer Berg for example, has been populated heavily by young families. In addition to being the ideal neighbourhood for artists and students, this particular Kiez is great for kids. From the trendy children’s shops to the museums, you can’t run out of activities here!

Kids, Prenzlauer Berg is a must visit! MACHmit! Museum for children Featuring large play areas and a variety of children‘s books, this museum was opened to the public in 2003. It is an odd but exceptionally entertaining and conventional location for both the children and their parents. Before Covid hit, the kids were able to enjoy a 7 metre high climbing frame with safety net, the Eliaskirche‘s original church organ and so much more.

Hardly anyone expects to see a ﬁeld of green in a city center, but Prenzlauer Berg offers these decent sized pockets of joy to breathe in a bit of fresh air. It is a pity that in some of these parks, pets are not allowed.

Are you a person who loves fashion? Do you have a particular style and do you follow fashion trends? Or you don’t know what to wear at all and you just wear whatever you pick from your closet? Or maybe you love making weird combinations with your clothes every day? Are you the type of person who loves fashion and combining your clothes in different ways? I also love to experiment, but in the end, my personal style can be categorized as quite classic. Mitte is the epicenter of Berlin where everyone goes to see and be seen. Undoubtedly Berlin is the fashion city of the whole Germany. The city is known for its culture and underground clubs and parties. Mitte especially is full of shopping stores ranging from global corporate chains to many independent vintage boutiques and second-hand stores. Many people dress to impress but no one will ever judge the way you have dressed. If you just walk around in Mitte, you can notice many different people with many different styles. Some of them are following the fashion trends and others prefer casual relaxed looks.

No one will judge the way you dress. You can notice that here most of the people wear backpacks when they go out of their houses. That’s why Berlin can be described as a backpack city. You can also see that black is the primary color of people’s outfits. It is not seen as a funeral color and you can freely wear it every single day and it will not be strange. Moreover, people here are big fans of sneakers. The fancier the sneakers are, the better it is. If you love sneakers you will be able to find many different stores offering special ones. People are not enslaved by brands. They do not like to show off so much, but rather to wear clothes that are rarer and unique. You are able to walk around as you want and no one will say anything which is quite impressive and because of that, there is no pressure in Berlin on the way you dressed up.

There is a sort of respectful energy in the area which I believe is one of the reasons .. for Schoneberg’s peacfulness.

Schoneberg might be the scale for you. .. If Schoneberg was a character, it would be a deer. Shy and reserved animal, creative and peaceful .. at the same time. Schoneberg is also the biggest gay district in Berlin. People want to be heard in this area, and one of their tools for that is street art.

Usually I wake up late, around midday, and drink what’s left of the beer. They let me take a shower at Weißes Kreuz, opposite of the Ostbahnhof. They also have a closet there with fresh underwear and army shirts – the shirts are really good. I spend most of the day just hanging around on the streets, we usually have a cigarette and talk about how much Berlin has changed. Most of us are in this situation not by choice. Anyone can end up on the street, I myself am an old punk who just got out of jail for setting a police station on fire. I did this because I felt like I had been

treated unfairly. Others ended up here because of unemployment, loss of their houses, their wives leaving them and taking their children with them. It can be anything really. Some think politically, see their way of life as a memorial against fascism and capitalism, others don’t care. The most exhausting thing about living on the street is that you can never sleep well. Everywhere you will always be driven away at some point. Tomorrow everything is cleared here. The public order office comes by at 8 P.M. with the police and a container to dispose of our things. This is how most days go. We move from place to place, sleep wherever we can and eat and drink what is available. It’s not easy, but it’s the reality.

Bowie was highly influenced by Berlin, where he wrote “The Berlin Trilogy”, which consists of three consecutively released studio albums: Low, Heroes & Lodger. In his album “Heroes” we see the song called Neuköln, the neighborhood from south Berlin, which was located between the American Military base at Tempelhof and the Berlin wall in Treptow.

These territories created an area mainly populated by workers from Turkey, “Gastarbeiters” that were brought to Germany to help rebuild the country. This eventually made them feel self-isolated since they were living in a city that was only using them for labor. Although Bowie didnʼt live there, he traveled there repeatedly. This cultural situation impacted and inspired Bowie. In this song, we hear Bowieʼs saxophone performance, which sounds like a foghorn echoing through the cold streets of Neukölln during a foggy, early winter morning. MY REALITY

“Some years ago, I inherited a tworoom flat from my parents. It’s on the first floor of an apartment building in Prenzlauer Berg. Downstairs there’s a kindergarten, and from my kitchen window, I can see children playing and fooling around all day until their parents come and pick them up. They say PB is the neighborhood for families in Berlin. I even once heard a nickname for the district ‘Pregnant Hill’. I think that’s pretty accurate. I do enjoy living in PB, it offers pretty much everything for everyone. It has a fun-loving vibe, pigeons are very down-to-earth, and I like being surrounded by nice pigeons. However, for a long time, I couldn’t help but feel a strong sense of alienation when most of the pigeons I passed by on my Sunday walks were the same age as me, with small children or at least a partner. I even felt a bit unmanly and embarrassed in a neighborhood where everyone else seemed to stroll around with a stroller. I began to wonder why haven’t I achieved things in my life that seem to happen to most pigeons around reasonably easy?

Even the last pigeons in my inner circle began to mate and have children. I, on the other hand, had some busy years working in a marketing agency. I sought others’ approval by overperforming in everything, and that’s when the loneliness began to haunt me. I also began to develop a drinking problem. Often I found myself standing in front of the kitchen window. It was disruptively quiet in that bachelor’s box. Was I too focused on the neighborhood stereotypes that I couldn’t see the diversity of pigeons there? Was it, after all, my own identity crisis? Was my only chance to move to a district considered more suitable for singles? I decided running away wasn’t an option. I set up a peer support group and quickly found out I wasn’t alone with my thoughts. It changed my life. I began to see my future as optimistic. I have received a massive amount of contacts from pigeons struggling with similar feelings, and it has been empowering. Together we’ve pondered our own role in society and what kind of dreams we have for life. A few months back, we got an idea to set up a monthly journal alongside our peer support activity that shares relatable stories of different pigeons living in Prenzlauer Berg. It aims to abandon stereotypes and generalizations and focus on reforming diversity in our beloved neighborhood. That’s the lifeblood of the PIDGY Journal. After years of pondering and anxiety, I no longer think being single or without children in PB would be a problem. Life feels good right now like this here. It was vital for me to find something that makes life interesting instead of focusing on what was missing. I found my purpose through PIDGY and peer support work”.

Friedrichshain

Soviet Architecture + Techno Friedrichshain is located in the east of Berlin. Historically, during World War II Friedrichshain was one of the parts of the city which was almost destroyed so in the postwar times when it was part of East Berlin, dominating part of the architecture was rebuild by the Soviet Republic and it still strongly reminds us of the Soviet-era Moscow Boulevards. With time Friedrichshain experienced gentrification, a change of character in the neighborhood. It turned out to become one of the most trendy districts of Berlin with clubs, bars, and cinemas, however, the architecture of the district was not touched. These two facts created an interesting contrast between the appearance of the region with its conservative and rational architecture and its life.

One of the great examples of this contrast is a nightclub called “Berghain”. Located in the heart of Friedrichshain, this place represents the whole concept of the region and its exclusivity. Just like Friedrichshain, the nightclub itself includes a lot of different layers and hidden places that are not for everyone. The guide of a broke artist. So you are in Berlin to showcase your artistic, hipster outlook and that’s great. But how can you do that when the prices of Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg frighten you to your core? This is the introduction to the Cinderella story of Wedding.

Food and drinks

Don’t have money to be a pub crawl? Go to a Späti, take a “Sterni” beer for 90 cent or if you want to be 40 cents fancier, get a “Berliner Kindl”. The little modest tables are great to chit-chat, and hey, maybe you can learn a few words. After drinking a couple of beers you are probably in need of some food, and without squinting too hard you will find several options around the corner. Turkish food is the way to go of course! The spinning Döner meat and the grilling vegetables are quickly sniffed by the nose of an empty stomach. Lahmacun are the perfect student deal aka Turkish pizza can be found at Örnek for 1 euro (“1.50 alles komplett – mit salat”). This place is basically a landmark, loyal clients come and order 50 Lahmacun which might make your cue that much longer. If meats aren’t your thing, a warm steamy Falafel will bring a smile on ever yone’s faces.

Living

After you are settled in your WG, with your weird Rave DJ roommate and in need to furnish your empty room, Wedding has the perfect solution. Why go to IKEA when you can just roam the streets to find other people’s stuff that they don’t want anymore. Pans, mugs, office chairs, the world is your oyster! Better yet, go to another Kiez such as Mitte or Prenzlauer Berg for fancier alternatives as well. Fit as many art magazines in your bike basket and get inspired. If free things feel too good to be true, there are the flea markets. Not the good ones with stands, the ones laid down in the ground with a turkish man yelling “1 Euro 1 Euro 1 Euro!” like it’s some kind of auction to buy a crooked pot. The experience is one of a kind and if you get something for cheap or even free it somehow makes it much nicer than it actually is (in your eyes). Look at how much money you saved, money that you will spend at Boesner or Modulor for art expensive art supplies anyway.

So entertaining yourself and your other broke artist friend is essential. After all you need to get out of the laptop screen, take in some fresh air and engage your body to movements (let’s not forget we are still young!) As tempting as clubs may be, the surroundings are great to explore. Rent a cheap bike or even get your feet working with some comfortable shoes. For even more spice you can follow the waterway from Panke, to Nordufer to Plötzensee. Google says it is a former borough of Wedding, now a part of Mitte but we will just

ignore that for now. It is a wonderful spot to take a swim during summer, or winter if you are brave. Either way, it will be a great few hours.

What is there to see? Schöneberg is constantly changing: beautiful facades of buildings, top fancy shop windows to look at and potential “blank” canvases that attract attention. A place of joy, this is what Mauerpark is today. The park is named after the memorial of the Berlin wall witch used to run across it. It is absolutely amazing to think that now the wall in this park is a place where people meet, make art and express themselves, but not too long ago a wall just like that one was the cause of devision and sufferance. The graffiti hall of fame is often mistaken for the actual Berlin Wall, but in a way is not a bad thing. It is as if the wall went trough a process of reclamation. First of all by the Berliners and shortly followed by artists from all over the world. These people continue to change this small space and contin66

ue doing so everyday with an amazing variety of styles and concepts. Mauerpark has a lot more to offer than graffiti. In fact, this place brings joy to everybody. Whether you want to do some shopping in the flea market, or listen to some music at the karaoke, eat some food from the many stands, or even buy a beer from the screaming guy with the bike horn that only speaks Bavarian... If you hate all of this you can just come and find your little piece of grass to sit and enjoy the sunshine.

During the time when Berlin was divided, the site of the park was the border strip of the Berlin Wall and the area was off limits from 1961 to 1989. After reunification the no-man’sland became a public park.

Mauerpark was officially opened exactly five years after the Wall fell on 9 November 1994. Its reconstruction work was overseen by landscape architect Gustav Lange.

! I know it’s hard sometimes to travel around without knowing what’s exactly open and what’s not during a lockdown. So, in order to help you make your experience a little easier, let me guide you through some cool places you can visit whilst in Corona times.

Moving on, make your way to, obviously, the Brandenburg Gate. You don’t want to miss one of the most famous places in Berlin. And the best part: you don’t have to worry about it being closed... And it’s free!

Mitte is known for being in, you know, the middle of Berlin. Because of this, you can find a lot of activities, even when almost everything is shut down. So for your first stop, you’re going to the Checkpoint Charlie. Achtung! Don’t forget your mask. Observe the architecture around it and take some photos.

You’ve already walked a good distance, so maybe it’s time to get some food. What about something sweet at Rausch Schokoladenhaus? It’s said to have the best chocolates and you can also have waffles! But remember, just on the go, no place to sit there for now. After you’re composed again, it would have been great if you could have gone to the Museum Island to visit some museums (duh!) Sadly, almost (if not all) are closed. However, there’s still the Lustgarten for you to relax for some time. Pay attention! You may witness one or more performances. After all, Berlin is the city of artists.

I know you didn’t have luck with the museums because they’re closed. But you know what’s not? The churches! You can still have a good look at the architecture of the past visiting the Zionskirche. You can only take pictures, it’s not necessary to say your prayers (forgive me lord). But thinking about how things are going, maybe asking for this pandemic to be over isn’t a bad idea. By now, I think you have enough of walking around, maybe it’s time to head back to your lodging. Grab a few beers from the nearest supermarket and enjoy the last minutes of the day drinking alone. (Nobody will see you cry, it’s okay.)

Most people still wonder what purpose this strange building serves in the landscape of Schlostraße, among its shopping malls and restaurants. Fact is, it serves none, at least not right now, as I am writing this. The building was originaly meant for a small host of cafes and restaurants. Yet, due to a constant change in owners, nothing stuck, and the building was left untouched. The structure was made in a futuristic spirit, yet many, including myself, oftenly mistake it for a brutalist work.

Angela Merkel, chancellor of Germany, once asked in one of her visits in the neighborhood “Is this a spaceship?”. The building stands in such great contrast to the standard Steglitz look, that many could never get quite used to it. The locals even nicknamed it the ‘Bierpinsel’, for some weird reason.

“Is this a spaceship?” -Angela Merkel While it might not have restaurants or cafes to present at the moment, or anything else for that matter, it is still one of Steglitz’s main touristic attractions, aside famous places such as the Botanischer Garden and the späti that sells banana flavoured Club-Mates next to the s-bahn.

“I don’t understand this thing” said one Steglitz resident admiringly as he stopped to stare at the strange huge object, a routine he took a liking to and is doing on daily basis nowadays. “This used to be a pretty neighborhood” says another local. In my own opinion, if you have by any chance the time to drop down at Steglitz, which you most likely won’t, I can whole heartedly recommend that you come to witness this graceless wonder, this purposesles beauty, the Bierpinsel.

Up in the sky

The “Degewo-Skywalk” is a 70 m viewing platform on the roof of a 27 floors prefabricated building. Despite the relative large distance to the center of Berlin, you can easily see Berlin in his wholesome uniqueness, including the TV tower, Berlin Cathedral and the Brandenburg back-country.

Reuse Nowadays second hand is getting more popular but I still remeber the days, back in high school, when some kids got bullied because they bought worn clothing. Itʻs a good thing that people are getting aware and buy more used clothes than fast fashion. But I have to admit some stores are really pricy (not all of them). Now letʻs go thrifting! I will show you some of the nicest thrift stores in Mitte.

1969 marked the opening of “Kulturpark Plänterwald” the only amusement park available at that time in Germany. Many people flocked to see the wonders it had to offer. Located in Treptow-Köpenick district of Berlin, just north of Plänterwald, this location proved to be the perfect place for it. Due its success it received funding from the senate and changed name to “Spreepark GmbH”.

Later on the years, Norbert Witte, the director of the Amusement Park sought to gather funds in order to modernize the establishment given the fact that it attracted over 1.5 million people each year and wanted to add more to its success.

ILLEGAL FUNDING? Norbert Witte went bankrupt in 2002. Out of business and starving for money, he moved to Lima, Peru with his family, trying his luck over there. His attempt to run a Lunapark was also a fail. Debts raised to 11 million Euros. In order to get back the finances, Norbert and his 20-year-old son started smuggling cocaine to Europe. The illegal business turned to prison when they got caught with 180 kg of cocaine in a merry-go-round called “The Flying Carpet” on their way back in Berlin. https://bit.ly/2MNJntW 76

In 2003 Norbert got sentenced to 6 years in prison in Germany and his son got himself 20 years in Peru.

A lot of people are returning to it just to revive the old memories although this is illegal because the park is off limits. There is a rumour that a woman got chased down by the guard dogs and got her hand stuck in the fence. This lead to one of her fingers get amputated.

Another rumour circulating around the park is that a 90-year-old woman jumped onto the Ferris wheel in a nostalgic attempt to enjoy the park, when the wind suddenly moved it and she got stuck in there. The fire brigade rescued her. Whether these stories are made up or not, they definitely serve to keep trespassers away.

GRAND REOPENING?!

It is being rumoured that the heritage protected EggHouse (Eierhäuschen) will be rehabilitated and turned into a restaurant with a beer garden and a jetty. The “Grand Reopening” is scheduled to happen in 2022 but with all the travel and pandemic restrictions currently in place this will prove a challenge.
