SQUATTING BERLIN

It is highly important to remember some rules of etiquette in squats; Be nice, be polite, respect other people and their opinions, work and efforts.

No sexism, No transphobia, No racism, No homophobia, No violence.

wd

If you travel to Berlin with the intention of exploring the “underground” culture of the city, visiting squats should be among your plans. It is quite difficult to mention all activities that may happen in the squats since they are in an ever-changing flow of people and events, but they can be roughly divided into the following categories:

WORKSHOPS

Sometimes, you may face problems with finding the squats, since the entrances are rather kept hidden from people. The only advice could be: speak and ask people around, cafes, markets etc. as the entry to the squat might even be through the nearest bar/pub.

6

As an example, to get into “Kastanienkeller” (one of the legitimated squats), you have to enter Cafe Mogenrot first and ask the staff about the event.

Security and privacy protection courses, yoga classes and others. All activities in squats are free or donation based. Some of the work-shops are held weekly (for instance, “Hearts’ Fear” hosts Infosec Workshop every

Monday at 19:00). You can just check their websites or hear it around and you only need to show up at the time and date of the workshop. They may not be regular, so if you would like, just check it after the event.

IC S U M Punk, experimental, hip-hop, electro, reggae or even karaoke of the 80s. Usually, concerts are donationbased or with a suggested price. Some squats are focused on holding music events, and among them are “Schokoladen” and “Kastanienkeller”, that exquisite international alternative concerts for every taste. If you look for more experimental music, then take “Köpi” into consideration.

SCreenings Visit “Duchsfenster Kino”, where you have to go through the window to get the cinema. Moreover, if you are a fan of Star Trek movies, this place is perfect for you, since they have Monday nights dedicated to this series. Furthermore every Monday and Wednesday squat named “Sama32” has a Film Club. Sometimes there are even chances to take part in screening of the movie which is occasionally held at “Köpi”.

FOOD Shared meals are organized in most of the squats. These “food events” are usually glutenfree and vegan. “Liebigstraße 34” hosts an event which is the combination of a shared meal and watching movies.

TALKS One side of the diverse life of squats is talks. It could be a discussion about environmental pollution, politics, confiscation of flats, or even skills of flirting. Besides talks, some writers make a presentation of released books.

Also, “Zielona Góra” every Thursday and Wednesday has a vegan Vokü, as well as “Supamolly” – you can come here every Sunday and join a process of cooking and sharing meals.

One of the most useful information resources is radar.squat.net, where all activities can be divided by location, group, type, topic, price, and/or date.

In Berlin, winter is a word that often pops up on a casual chit-chat. There is a good reason for this topic to be so relevant, Berlin’s winters can be shivering and may look like they are never-ending. This article will help you go through Berlin’s cold as smoothly as possible.

In Berlin Where winter does not stop you

rain jacket & pants

Ride your bike?

You can do it, even when it’s really cold, you just need to be equipped. Here are some essentials that can make a sweet ride possible.

beanie/earcover mudguard

gloves

Winter potion

For a moment you are warm in the u-Bahn, oops, now it’s cold outside. With the temperature changing, the winter flu can get you easily. Here’s a natural mix with antibiotic qualities. If you get sick, or just want to be stronger. Fresh ginger (2x2 cm) Lemon (half)

Turmeric 1 teaspoon

Honey 1 spoon Brave? garlic - 1 clove 10

Blend all together, drink like a champ.

Vitamine D

It might come handy in a greyish city and with a lack of sun comes a lack of vitamine D. This vitamine can help you on multiple levels, from creating a strong bone and muscle structure to improving brain functions. People have different opinions about how to get it, but here are your main options: Run outside when the sun peeks out. Take a pill (vitamin D). A “sun lamp”. You can get them in a range of versions/prices.

Skin can get dry Here’s a natural recipe to help you deal with it:

1/2 cup almond oil (or any other liquid oil) 1/4 cup coconut oil 1/4 cup beeswax

essential oils - to suit your preference (10-15 drops) 2 TBSP shea/coco butter (optional)

Feelings They shape how we think

How do we feel when the sky gets bright later in the morning and dark earlier in the evening? The lack of light and the cold often affects us mentally and physically, some will call it “the winter blues”. While bears found a great solution and just sleep it over, as humans that’s not realistic.

Enclosing yourself inside the house is not really an option. There are multiple things you can do to keep your mind and body balanced. The key to success is staying active. But what does that mean? It can be implied to many sectors in our lives.

What can you do? Nutrition

When it’s colder your body requires more calories. This doesn’t mean you should only eat fast food. Berlin’s low sunlight also means that more of the sleep hormone melatonin is produced. Melatonin’s opponent, serotonin exists in many kinds of nuts: peanuts, cashew nuts, hazelnuts etc.

Meditation

Meditation can be translated to many actions like writing, drawing, contemplating and for some even washing the dishes. It is an individual experience. The important thing is to give yourself the time to be thoughtless, and clear your mind from the overload.

12

Social

Not only do the cold and dark influence how we feel, but also our environment. Having a sense of community helps immensly if it’s keeping in touch with your family or being part of drawing class, people need people. You’re not alone!

GROUND AND UNDERGROUND

E-SCOOTER: In case you want to save time and have fun you can choose modern electric scooter. 20 km/h is pretty much fun. Just install an official app and register there with your phone number and credit card attached. Next, scan the bar code on a found vehicle and follow the instructions. Otherwise, use a map to find an available e-scooter. The rental costs are 1 euro to unlock and then 0,15 cents/min. on average. Most popular e-scooters are TRAM: Lime & Bird,

Berlin is home to Germany’s largest tram network. Trams ply the streets 24/7 and are divided into ordinary and metro-trams. Note: some short-term tickets are sold directly in trams and buses and therefore do not have to be validated.

BICYCLE:

Another alternative to walking or doing sports is riding a bike. Berlin is known for its extensive system of bicycle roads plus many cafes and shops are equipped with bike racks. The rental procedure is the same as with e-scooter. The costs for e-bikes such as Jump or Lime include 1 euro to activate and a minute price of 0,10-0,15 cents/min. In case of ordinary bikes like Mobile or Bike the rent is 1 euro/20 minutes.

TRANSPORT E-scooter, Tram, Bicycle, 16 S-Bahn and U-Bahn, Bus.

FARE ZONES: There are 3 fare zones in Berlin. Zone A includes the city centre, zone B reaches the border of the city itself and includes Tegel airport. Finally, zone C covers some of the surrounding area such as Potsdam. There are different options available: combined zone tickets for adults and children, S-BAHN & U-BAHN: a single trip or an annual subscription and even tourist The schedule of the Berlin metro is quite flexible and packages.

BUS:

convenient. During weekday lines operate from 4:00 to 13:00 (U-bahn) and 4:30 to 13.30 (S-bahn) and on weekends metro carries passengers around the clock. What’s particularly great about Berlin’s subway is that you can carry prams, luggage and dogs at no extra cost. The other case is when you have 2 dogs... You also have to pay for the bike ride. Overall, everything is made for people, you can even have a snack at a food stall on the station.

There are all sorts of buses for everyone: ordinary, two-storey buses and so-called ‘’metro-buses’’ that run along the routes of metro lines as soon as they are closed. Moreover, bus number 100 has proved to be the finest alternative to commercial bus tours in Berlin as its route goes through multiple attractions.

Water-skiing If you don’t like listening to tourist guides and prefer an adrenaline kick, continue reading! Now you can finally look like a tourist in Miami, all the way over from Berlin! This bathing beach is the perfect place for unwinding from the daily stress and for sports activities. The bathing area boasts an island and a 50-meter-long pier that goes into the water. If you are looking for the full package of holiday and tranquility, you can even book a professional massage. Come to Strandbad Jungfernheide!

Canoeing

20

When you think about Berlin, the first thing that comes to mind is probably not canoeing. The Spree and it’s canals however offer a wide array of guided canoe tours that cover famous sights like the TV-Tower or the Molecule Men. Several short stops are made during every tour to make sure no one gets tired. If you are into water sports and history be sure not to miss this unique opportunity!

Climbing Park Jungfernheide Are you ready to rise? To face all your fears? To surpass yourself? To find out, that Berlin is more than just concrete? If your answer was yes, you will enjoy this location, as you will get to know this city from a bird’s eye view! … or rather, a racoon’s view, since you will be climbing trees. Using climbing gear, of course. It’s a bit far away from the city center but just the woods themselves are worth taking an U-Bahn and a bus!

Urban Spree The urban Spree is an art and culture house on the RAW side of Berlin-Friedrichshain. This space is dedicated to exhibitions, events, concerts and DIY workshops dedicated to urban culture. The 1700m² area also includes an art store and a beer garden. The cold of the winter is worthwhile as soon as you can enjoy a beer listening to indie music on a warm summer night.

Monkey Bar at the Bikini Berlin If you’re looking for a place to drink, look no further! The Monkey bar has all sorts of beverages, including international drinks and an excellently compiled wine list. You can also enjoy small dishes from the kitchen of NENI Berlin. Regular events, an awesome view and the location itself make the bar a total hotspot. The Monkey Bar has been awarded with a number of distinctions, in 2015 it was voted Europe’s best hotel bar in the European Hospitality Awards.

Is Street Photography Legal in Germany?

Short answer – Yes! In a recent ruling the German supreme court recognized street photography as an art form. And creating art is a personal right that is protected by the constitution. However, you should try your best to avoid anything that could be deemed an invasion of privacy or intimacy and showing people in an undignified or helpless manner.

You want to become a Berlin gangster? Tasting the fruit of life by being the best version of yourself? Lemme tell you something real quick. We have been listening to German rap since we were 9, we have been drinking Pepsi from coca cola glasses and accepting privacy policies without even reading them. Being a Berlin gangster is a state of mind, once you enter it you become unstoppable! If you want to be like us you have to be focused, concentrated and give it all you got! Being a gangster isn`t easy, becoming one is even harder.

HOW TO BECOME Your name You have a cute name like Thomas or Niels? NO PROBLEM! Not all of us have the privilege of a typical Berlin name like Ahmad, Yusuf or Hasan. You can just ask yourself what sounds dangerous and makes everyone respect you. Instead of lying about your name just add something special. For example “Habibi”, “Kardes” and “Abi” are all great options.

Valuables Here is list of things you MUST own as a Berlin gangster: Shisha, Hookah, Narghile, Bong Yup I know they are all the same thing. That’s exactly my point. You have to praise the shisha like your lord, wake up with it, go and take it out for a walk, read him goodnight stories before bed and ohh don’t forget about the goodnight kisses. You don’t even need to smoke shisha. Speaking of which every time you go to a Shisha cafe you have to put all the things in your pocket all over the table. Rather than a wallet full of money just find some Monopoly money and put a bunch of it in your wallet. Instead an iPhone just buy an Apple sticker and put it on your phone. I bet nobody is even gonna realize. Instead of your own car keys just take your parents spare ones and than just lie that you left your car in the gas station if anybody asks.

Tinder 2.0 What better way is there in 2020 to meet new people than in the U Bahn? Make sure you look relaxed and Alpha all the time no matter the environment or situation. There is a seat for 3 people in the U Bahn? Sit in the middle and stretch arms and legs and look inviting to cuddle with strangers. Who knows maybe you will become best friends.

A BERLIN GANGSTER Deutsche&Albaner (Dolce Gabanner) We humans use seeing for 74% of the time as the sense to rely on. 15% go to hearing and the other 12% are split among smelling, feeling and tasting. The special about Berlin gangsters is that they are recognized by smell 99% of the time. Key to their smell is the combination of AXE deodorant with 2 Hugo Boss perfumes and to top it off just throw a few sprays of CK one on each layer of clothing to make sure people recognize you before you even reach their sight.

Attention please As a Berlin gangster you carry the burdon to show people real music. Usually other people have a very poor choice of music and it is your job to help them by teaching them about “Haftbefehl”, “Bushido”, “Kurdo”, “187 Strassenbande” and many other German rappers. The best way to be a kind soul is by blasting their songs in public spaces. For example when you wait for the bus and you see the old granny joining you, turn up the volume to 100 and play “069” from “Haftbefehl”. They immediately look aggressively towards you: One song and already addicted. By the way if you have a sore throat but still want to grab everyone’s attention while rapping along, a megaphone is always an option.

The sacret Walk Now comes the most important part of your lesson. The “ancient technique which has been passed down for generations”. You have to square up... literally. It will make you look bulked up. It takes many years of intensive training to master the perfect angle.

1 cm too low and you are a beta male that wears cargo pants and listens to Taylor Swift, but 1 cm too high and you look like a bird that tries to fly for the first time. The first step is to put razer blades under your armpits. Now by muscle memory and pain you should be able to hold that position. Every time you bump into a stranger you become stronger, for every kid that falls and starts crying you become a testosterone beast. But be carefull! NEVER WALK TOO MUCH! Training your legs is NOT good for you. It decreases upper body mass and sometimes even your biceps shrink. Never forget: Your T-shirt is like the girl’s yoga pants.

The 30 meter long pool is filled with fresh water and even has a beach bar; everything you need if you need to cool down during Berlin’s warm summer days.

In addition to three dance floors, techno music, and fluorescent colors, the Kit Kat Club has a swimming pool. A perfect place to show some skin wearing your swimwear. Their dress code is pretty strict in the way that less is more, so for example swim shorts would make an excellent outfit for the night. That is of course if you don’t prefer to skinny dip. 32

Or you could also just simply want to enjoy the gifts of mother nature. For that, check out Schlachtensee, easily reachable with the S-Bahn, located in the middle of the forest and considered the cleanest lake in Berlin. Besides splashing in the clear waters, in the summer months you can rent a boat or paddle board to explore its beautiful surface.

Chilly weather is no stranger in Berlin, so it’s understandable that swimming outdoors would not be a preference for all, but we do have another suggestion! The Oderberger Stadtbad, architectural jewel of 1902, is 20m long, and, when not used as a swimming pool, this historic bath becomes a great spot for events.

BERLIN’S DISGUSTINGLY GOOD DISH Finding a really good Döner Kebab in Berlin will take some time. There are too many Döner Kebab places to visit. You might ask yourself where can I find the best one? Luckily, we already tried the best ones for you!

ORIGINS OF DÖNER KEBAB Döner Kebabs are very similar to the Greek dish Gyro or Arabian dish Shawarma. They all are shaved meat from a rotisserie which is a type of cooking that can be traced back to the Ottoman period. Döner Kebabs are very well known as a quick meal all over Europe. But the question is how was it invented? Döner Kebab was first introduced in Berlin by Kadir Nurman in 1972. He sold it in the West part of the city.

clipartmag.com

Many people say that Döner Kebab was created in Turkey, yet Europe’s Turkish Döner Production Chairman mentions strongly that it was first introduced in Germany. In Turkey there are many varieties and people will say that Döner existed in different styles and names long before that.

WHAT’S INSIDE? Döner Kebab is made from seasoned lamb meat. But the meat can also be beef, chicken or veal yet pork isn’t used. The Döner’s bread is freshly baked and is served with either spicy, garlic or yoghurt 36 sauces.

If you are too broke to buy a ticket, read this article and you will learn some tips that might become useful in case you get caught! Attention, we are not saying that you should not buy a ticket but, if you do not have any money, we get it! Depending on your situation, pick the tip you need. Do not use them all! Also do not overestimate your acting skills. Only use the ones you feel comfortable with and you feel like you can properly perform.

Do’s Act chill and pretend someone is calling you. If they are coming in your direction, pretend you did not see them and act like you have seen someone you know in the opposite direction. Wave and leave without looking back. Follow the controller around (always behind him). You should obviously get out of the subway as soon as possible. If they are coming for you, speak another language and pretend you do not understand understand a word of what they are saying. Have a mental breakdown when they ask you the ticket. Keep an onion in your pocket so you can use it to fake tears. Also the smell is going to repel the controllers. If you are in a really bad situation make your nose bleed. Do not punch yourself too hard! 44

Show a random card, not everyone checks.

Dont ’s Don’t run. If they catch you, the police will step in and you will be in much more trouble than if you had to deal only with the BVG Company. Don’t scream, if you get scared, stay calm and take a deep breath. Don’t act weird, put your best poker face on and hope for the best. Don’t push people to get out as fast as possible, It will only harm you and them.

In case you get caught!

Make it look like you did not try to run away. Give up on trying to escape and be polite, they are just doing their job. Do not try to cheat anymore. Once they got you, they got you and there is no way to avoid the consequences. They are really good at finding people. Now pay your fine and do not blame us.

We do not encourage this behaviour as a living...but if it happens: remember what we taught you!

In a city fueled by creativity, it‘s no wonder drag culture has made such a powerful impact on Berlin‘s mainstream audience and has been doing so for more than 30 years. Drag history dates back to the Shakespearean era, when women weren‘t allowed to perform in theaters due to religious reasons, so men took on both roles. One could argue that it was the root of gender fluidity, but it was mostly an underground culture. Today, in modern Berlin, it stands for so much more. Behind the eyeliner stroke, boldness of

the lips, sensuality in movement stand countless hours of perfecting the craft. It is empowerment through the art form. In this guide you can find the best places to visit and completely emerge yourself in the amazing performances that attract the best crowds and ignite passion in the audience and performers alike.

About Berlin, the very first thing that comes to mind is freedom of expression. The diciplines to reflect this expressive soul are placed on the streets. Graffiti and Street Art takes huge amount of interest from tourists all around the world. Only problem is that graffiti and most street art techniques are illegal in Berlin.

Street Art

For most of the people, graffiti and street art may look similar but there is a huge difference. Street Art tends to be legal and uses artistic figures. It uses a visual language that aims to be appreciated and get an emotional response from an audience as wide as possible. Street art also includes text sometimes to convey a message, however it does not use tags as a piece of work. Artists uses tags, names or symbols as a signature. Street Art is not just about paintings on the wall, there are many techniques which you can find on the next page.

Graffiti

The art form founded in the 70s in New York. At the beginning it was just words that taggers put on public spaces. Then it meant something special, it became a way to say “... was here. It was a way of communication with the other taggers using public areas. Tagging a train then come back to a response after, got bigger and tags became throw-ups on train wagons. It travels the city everyday and all citizens notice those throwups. Compared to street art, most graffiti works are made illegally. Public transportation in Berlin strictly forbids graffiti. In general, artists consist of letters and tags, usually in bubble letters. Graffiti artists don’t usually tend to care whether their work is appreciated from the masses, considered their targets tend to be other graffiti artists.

Techniques Spray Painting:

You need to sketch first, on paper or on the wall. It depends on your choice. If you drew your lines to the wall, fill inside the lines. You can draw doodles and take a picture of it, put what you want to draw on the wall on it digitally. Now you have a more accurate sketch and way more faster. Now it is all yours to paint.

Stickers:

These are mostly small sized and printed on a sticky paper. This is the fastest technique on applying. Print your work and stick it!

Liquid Paintings:

This technique is fast on applying and you have time as long as you want it to be. Same as stencil. Draw or design your poster at home and paste it wherever you want.

You are going to need brushes for this one and paint of course. There are kinds of liquid paints but it’s better to use the one which dries faster. We don’t want to use oil paint and wait for days for it to dry. Yet you can still use it. Acrylic dries much more faster than oil paint and it is cheaper. The process can be same as the spray painting.

Stencil:

Cut-Out:

Poster:

This technique is one of the fastest when it comes to doing it on the wall but you need to prepare first. Draw what you want to draw on paper or do it in software and print it. It will be easier to apply if it’s a thick paper or a metal sheet is even better! Cut the inside of the painting but be careful, you don’t want to cut out the parts that you don’t want to paint. Make them connected to the sheet with lines. Then all you need to do is place it on a wall and spray paint. You can use layers to give it shadows.

This is almost same as sticker but it needs more time to find where you want to stick it. It would be better to pick a spot first than design something specifically for that spot. Usually human and animal figures are used and purpose of it is to give an illusion effect.
