Bathing beauty A friend of mine was delighted recently to win a swimming lesson with former Olympic breaststroke champion Duncan Goodhew, but her initial euphoria was soon replaced with feelings of dread as she contemplated what to wear for her big occasion. The ultimate, most terrifying stage fright – with the exception of total nudity – is the bathing suit. Thoughts about whether “my bum looks big in this” pale into insignificance as we consider exposing every bump and lump imaginable in the most revealing item next to our birthday suit! Most of us fit into three problem shapes – pear, apple and straight (or athletic). Pears are heavy around the hips and thighs, and wearing a plunging neckline or eyecatching top with ruffles or embellishments will make the bust look bigger and will also draw attention away from the heavier bottom half. Padded, push up tops make boobs look bigger and bandeau tops make the bust appear wider. High cut bottoms make the legs look longer if this is also an issue. Apples have large busts and thick waists with comparatively small hips. Boy shorts make the hips look wider and help to give balance. Tops that are cut straight across help to minimise large busts, and for extra support bikini tops should be under-wired, and one piece suits should have higher backs. If finding the perfect fit for both top and bottom halves is a problem, don’t be afraid to buy different sized separates in complimentary designs. For example bottoms in a bright or patterned fabric and a top in a plain, darker fabric, will help draw attention away from the bust. If you need to disguise a large tummy, a one piece suit with ruched panels or shirring will hide bulges and create definition, as will a wrap over design with crossover fabric. Straight shapes need to create the illusion of more curves, and the monokini is great for this, as is a one-piece with strategically placed cuts or slits. Bold prints, ruffles and embellishments on tops and bottoms accentuate the bust and hip lines, and skimpier bikini bottoms plus side ties will make your bottom appear curvier. Finally, before selecting your swimwear, consider how and when you plan on wearing it. Whether you intend to go swimming or scuba diving, or spend your time sunbathing will have an influence on the style, fabric and even the colour you choose. The Cut by HIDE SAIGA: The Instalux cut is all about texture and movement combining a 90s rock chick feel with the latest product technology. The style took influence from three fashion designers : Tom Ford for distressed texture, Marc Jacobs for fringes and Onitsuka Tiger for the grown out fringe, a little bit softer and almost in the eye to give it that little bit of sexiness.
The Cut by KEVIN LUCHMAN: The Sonic Boom was inspired by the popular 90s video game Street Fighter and the character Guile, a Major in the U.S. Air Force who wore a flat top style. This, along with the American and UK barbering trend of creating a high skin fade which creates a longer length at the front, a decreasing one towards the crown area and a square shape throughout, formed the basis of this look.
The Colour by MAKOTO IWAYA: The Instalux’s Electric Violet and Sunset Purple shades are reflective of the colours once used in Japanese traditional arts and fashion more than 1000 years ago through the dyeing, dyer and Kimono processes.The colours were some of the most difficult and expensive to come by, as the flower that produced the dye was very rare. Also, the impressive contrast on some of the details is created by ‘depth shocked,’ which is like a thunderbolt within the texture of the hair. Using the main colour technique of Gradiffusion (Graduation+Diffusion +Fusion), the two-step colour delivers an imperfect effect creating a rock chick style.

The Cut by RICHARD MANNAH: The look is based around the ‘cool kids’ on the Brooklyn and downtown New York scene. Who are very open and experimental with colouring and cutting their hair. Hair is coloured in different disconnected sections. e.g the fringe is one colour, the right side is another and the left a completely new colour but it all works. The same with cuts. A lot of disconnected fringes and sections, shorter in some areas and longer in others. The Pearl reflects all of those elements. It has a strong angled disconnected silver/grey fringe with contrasting pearl blonde lengths and layers throughout the rest of the shape.
The Cut by DANIELE DE ANGELIS: The Ikon is based on Prada’s annual ‘Iconoclast’ exhibition where fashion stylists are invited to reinterpret the brand’s creative vision. This is similar to the process that we (Artistic Team) go through when reimagining Sacha’s creative direction for the Collection by putting our own stamp on our look. A focal point of the haircut, one of the shortest styles in the new Socialized Collection, was influenced by British Supermodel Erin O’Connor’s editorial shoot by famed photographer David Simms. This is evident at the front where we worked with a double fringe, which adds an air of ‘mystery and intrigue’ to the overall attitude of the look.
The twist dry technique creates a fresh and undone editorial wave/movement for more contrast against the smooth fringe.
The Colour by SIOBHAN GOLDEN: The Ikon’s colour is a saturated Retro Red; micro lights create shimmers of intensity in an otherwise colour-blocked base. The Ikon girl is a nonconformist and individual.
The Colour by JO O’NEILL: The Pearl is a young, fresh twist on a blonde, making a statement with bold patterns and contrasting colours. Inspiration was taken from the Confluence concept, which is something that we’ll see on the runway in the upcoming season. Confluence, a cocktail of colours, brings together a mixture of culture and street styles with a 90s electric vibe.
This, in addition to Prada’s third chapter of its ‘Iconoclast’ exhibition, advertised with a short intense red-haired model, reflects the experimental and individuality of its collections. Natalie Westling’s Retro Red for a Marc Jacobs’ campaign also served as inspiration.

It’s really important to wear sunglasses, to protect your eyes against harmful ultraviolet (UV) light. UV rays can cause damage to your eyes which could lead to cataracts. These cause clouding of the lens, reduced vision and even blindness if left untreated. Most sunglasses now filter out both UVA and UVB rays. There is a vast array of sunglasses to choose from including prescription sunglasses. There may be a few styles that aren‘t suitable for your prescription but an expert can advise on this. It is important to think about the shape of your face to determine which sunglasses may suit you best. Decide whether your face is heart shaped, round, oval or square, as this will help you work out whether square frames, cat’s eye shape, aviator style, shield, oversized or sport may work best for you. Those with heart-shaped faces will generally find that frames that are wider at the top than the bottom will look best, whilst oversized, rectangular and angular frames will counterbalance a round face and shallow rectangular frames will visually shorten a long face. Think about your colouring too. What frame colours will suit your skin tone and hair colouring? Those who are fair may find pastel shades or transparent frames most complimentary. Of course you may want to make a statement and choose a bolder frame. Sunglass lenses are usually plastic for increased durability and versatility. Some opticians offer a range of different colour lenses from the
more traditional browns and greys to yellows, blues and green. Different tints suit particular circumstances such as green for enhancing contrast and thus being really helpful for those who play sports like golf. There are a variety of tints too. Dark tints are best for mountains and sea and lightly-tinted for more urban and general environments. All sunglasses reduce brightness, but to reduce glare as well, you need polarized lenses. They are particularly effective when driving, skiing or fishing as they block glare increase contrast. As with all spectacles you have the choice of designer brands such as Ray Ban, Ted Baker and Oakley or non-designer. There is an element of fashion and celebrity endorsement too. Iconic images of Tom Cruise wearing L.G.R. Tangeri and Cosmoros sunglasses in last years Mission Impossible 5 film had a huge influence and led to other brands copying the trend. A key event in the Bedford calendar is the Hair & Beauty Show at Bedford Corn Exchange. Held every spring, this stage and catwalk show highlights tomorrow’s fashions today – created by young people who are training to work in salons and spas in the future.
“The event is sponsored by Love Bedford to acknowledge the contribution made by Hair and Beauty employers to the Business Improvement District, and to support Bedford College which brings 1,000s of students and staff into the town centre,” explains BedfordBID Chair Sam Laycock, of the Harpur Centre,
Hair and beauty businesses throughout the town centre enter their young talent into the competition which is run by Bedford College’s Brooks training centre on the High Street. Hundreds of trainees with their families and friends crowd into the auditorium to see the show.
“The quality of work and the excitement generated among the audience was outstanding. All of those people are potential customers and I was delighted to be involved as Love Bedford Chair to talk up the town.”

The event is sponsored by Love Bedford to acknowledge the contribution made by hair and beauty employers to the Business Improvement District The theme of the 2016 show was Reduce, Reuse and Recycle an idea which resonates with many town centre businesses. Hair styles, make-up and fashions were creatively used to get across the message that up-cycling is cool. “There is an expression that some people can look good in a bin bag, well some of the costumes were literally recycled plastic and paper bags, with empty cans and old newspapers thrown into the mix,” added Sam. “But the style factor was fantastic. It is great to see young people from Bedford College, who are the hairdressers, beauty therapists and business owners of the future putting on such a great show.” A highlight of the evening was the Jagged Edge crew collection. Founded by 28-year-old Zak Resinato, Jagged Edge has gone from a Bedford High Street barbers to become a national brand with a “barbers pod” deal with Sainsbury’s UK. The venue in Bedford remains as a barbers and workplace training academy for the steady stream of Jagged Edge barbers. The crew put on an exciting display of the craft of hairstyling for men. WEAR SUNSCREEN – all year around; however it is vital during the summer months to protect your skin from sun damage that will cause early ageing of the skin. A good moisturiser with added sun protection is a great way to ensure you are protected every day. Don’t forget to protect your lips – they are very sensitive. Use a good quality lip balm each day.

EXFOLIATE – two to three times a week to increase cell turnover to reveal newer, healthier skin. Exfoliating will reduce blackheads and fine lines on your face leaving you with a healthy glow for summer. By exfoliating your body you will also get your skin ready for catching the rays (safely of course!).

MOISTURISE – everyday as the heat can dehydrate your skin, it is very important to keep your skin moisturised even if your skin feels oily. Winter moisturisers can be too heavy in the summer so switch to something lighter – a lotion, gel or emulsion work really well. If you really love your winter moisturiser and can’t go without it, just use a lot less!
