W.O.W. Moment Words of Wisdom “Going the Extra Mile, is not quitting before you finish the race.” -ShunteSitting at my computer with multiple tabs open, all of projects due. I sometimes feel like I can’t go on. Either I’m exhausted, sleepy, or just plain out frustrated, but that’s when I hear a whisper encouraging me to go the extra mile. I know you may be thinking I’m talking about being nice or generous, however I am encouraging you not to quit! You may feel burned out, overwhelmed, or that you are not seeing the progress you are working so hard to obtain; just know Go the Extra Mile. It is in the last push we take hold of what is promised.

How did you get your start? My introduction came from watching my mother put makeup when I was child. My mom was a Mary Kay rep which allowed me experiment with different colors and texture on myself and friends. I was a makeup artist before I knew what a makeup artistry was. It was pure love at first before I knew it was real a profession What advice would you give someone starting out in your profession? Learn your craft and be enduringly passionate about your God given gift. Study the human face, skin and how light act to it. "Practice not until you get right but till you can't get it wrong. What one trend are you liking? Orange Lipstick

How did you get your start? I have always known I wanted to be in the beauty industry. I naturally had a love for styling hair and doing makeup. I love the creativity in it all. After receiving my cosmetology license in Santa Monica, California, I was hired at Carlton Hair International where I started my extensive cut, color, and styling training, and assisted 2 master stylists. Carlton for me was like hairstylist boot camp. It really shaped the professional perfectionist I am today! I later moved on from Los Angeles to San Jose, California where I was promoted to Master Stylist at Alchemy Hair Studios. On November 2013, I opened Hair by Amburlee - The Ultimate Beauty Lounge.

How do you define beauty? Being comfortable in your own skin. It doesn't matter of your skin color, weight or size. Whether it's makeup or clothing, rock it, have confidence, and make it your own. "Keep It FIERCE Honey"

What advice would you give someone starting out in your profession? My advice would be to get as much education as possible. The industry is always changing and evolving so you need to stay updated. Practice your craft often and always push yourself to the limit because that is how we get better.

I

t's not every day one gets to attend a Masquerade ball, and Saturday, April 12th I found surrounded by people wearing fabulous masks. Where was I? I was of course at TBLE's 2nd Annual 'Breast Cancer Awareness' Gala themed 'Black & White Masquerade Ball'. For those of you who have been reading my blog for a long time, you should be familiar with TBLE, as I have done more than a few posts on them and their charity work. TBLE stands for Total Beauty Ladies Events and is an organization created by my friend, Shunte Davis. TBLE is run by her and her hubby Wendell Davis. TBLE, already an outstanding organization, has grown so much from the time I met Shunte 3-4 years ago. Shunte and Wendell have successfully launched the following sister programs to TBLE: My Beautiful Family, INC., Total Beauty Ladies Group, & Beautifully Being U Magazine. Shunte and her husband are adamant about giving back to the community and especially fundraising for Breast Cancer Awareness and other 'Fundraising for Hope' campaigns. 2013 was the launch of TBLE's first ever 5-event Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign and it was so successful that they decided to do it again for 2014. The first event for the 2014 campaign was the Beautifully Being U Magazine Launch Party. The 2nd event was the Gala on April 12th, and as the featured blogger sponsor for their 2014 campaign I was on the front lines covering the event and having a jolly good time! Gala attendees were required to wear black and white clothing and a mask, but accessories and the mask could be any color. The evening was full of entertainment and unique ways to raise money for the cause. RL Photography was on hand to take photos of all the guests enjoying the party and in front of the Gala For Hope backdrop.

At last year's gala, my table cleaned house by winning two trays of cupcakes, and I knew I had to win the cupcakes again, so I WENT IN on the bidding war! I out bid the competition and awarded my table with a dozen YUMMY vanilla cupcakes! After the dessert auction, we played heads or tails to win a private dinner for 2. To play you purchased one or 2 necklaces to wear around your neck while someone tossed a coin in the air. Before the side of the coin is read you put your hands on your hips for 'tails' or a your hand on your head for 'heads'. If you guessed right you get to keep your beads, but if your guess is incorrect you are out and loose a strand of beads (See why buying 2 is beneficial?). Following heads or tails, Irene Griffin and Raye Avery from Hustle & Salsa Houston, performed a salsa number for all of us. We were all in a dancing mood after that, and took to the dance floor to participate in songs like the Cupid Shuffle & the Wobble. Next up? CRAPS! Err--I mean all the casino games, I just happen to love Craps whether I'm playing with real money or not! Upon entering the gala, each guest received tickets to exchange for casino chips. If you ran out of chips you had the option to purchase more and the money went to charity. At the end of the night, for every $2500 you earned in fake money you received a raffle ticket to enter the 50" TV giveaway. I basically spent the rest of the evening at the Craps table and lost ALL of my fake money...hahaha, but at least it was fake! All in all it was a magical night for a cause, and I left a verrrrrrry VERY happy camper, ready to do it again!

The bartender offered a wide array of yummy cocktails that helped guests go through their 5 drink tickets fairly easily. Dinner was buffet style, and it was capital YYUMMY! It's been weeks and I'm still thinking about the rice & chicken (inner #foodie). After dinner, guests begin to mingle with one another and peruse the silent auction tables and the dessert auction table. Yes you heard right! A dessert auction, and in my opinion, the best part of the evening (I have an insatiable sweet tooth). For the dessert auction, vendors donated baked goods that were auctioned off to the highest bidder.

ebbie J. Honore': Sitting in a Setback, while waiting for a Comeback!

Debbie J. Honore' personifies the saying “Turning lemons into lemonade!” With a keen eye for putting things together, Debbie Honore' started her career in the retail industry mid to late 1990’s. Having always dreamed of owning her own business but never quite the courage; Honore' would journal and write down how she envisioned her store i.e. the colors of her walls, layout etc. and pray about it. While struggling with the courage to step out on faith and open her own store, Honore would have to face fear of the unknown head on! “In 2005, we were faced with dealing with Hurricane Katrina,” remembers Honore'. “We left with the shoes on our feet, the outfit we had on and one additional outfit. We lost everything! However, we had our lives; each other and the memories are in our hearts!” Honore' and her family lived in Atlanta for a year and in 2006-2007 they packed up the few things they could salvage and settled in Houston, TX. In the mist of going through all of this, Honore' would still journal. Once in Houston, Debbie Honore' and her family started the process of rebuilding their lives. Honore' went back to work in retail industry for a company out of New Zealand doing set ups for their brand, however the desire and vision to open her own store began to weigh heavily on her heart and once she decided, if I can endure Hurricane Katrina I can do anything! Having already applied for a DBA in 2007, Honore' began Googling information for opening a retail store and getting different contacts. A pivotal change came when Honore' was introduced to a Trade show in Vegas about buying items to put in a retail boutique. Still playing it safe, Honore's plan was to start the business online, but was encouraged to look for a location. A tedious task proved to be worthwhile when she came across a perfect location that catered to women, was in a good area and the space was perfect! From there Honore' reach out to the leasing agent, told them what she was trying to do and my goals. In two weeks she was handed the keys opened Shoe Fetage' 30 days later! Through it all, Debbie Honore' contends, “I was sitting in a setback, while believing in a comeback!” Recently, Honore' celebrated third year in business however, it doesn’t stop here at Shoe Fetage'. She still journals and there’s a lot more to come! Congratulations Debbie for following your dreams and bringing fashion and inspiration to your community.

Kalyn Floyd www.kalynmua.wix.com/sprinkleofbeauty

We love all the work Kalyn has done! From brides to teaching beauty tutorials, watch for this lovely Woman on the Rise. When asked about her beginnings in beauty and her passion for artistry, Kayln wrote: “Growing up as a track and field athlete I was always thrown under the stereotype of tomboy. Yes, I did play with the boys and traded in Barbie dolls for basketballs and footballs, but I've always had a passion for looking great! I remember saying to myself, "when I'm old enough to wear makeup, I'm going to wear it right!" As I got older I would wear sweat pants and workout clothes, but my face was always BEAT (Glam)! I loved playing in makeup and transforming faces into flawless masterpieces. Being a makeup artist is so rewarding. I love to see women's reactions to their makeover. My makeup brushes are the one thing I wouldn’t trade in for track and field spikes.” Congrats Kayln on finding your passion and being accentuating the beauty in women.

Upon my recent trip to the salon for his first hair cut, I found this amazing product. The stylist used just a few drops to loosen his curls before she began trimming away the last of his baby status. I quickly inquired about the product after seeing the immediate results of looser more defined curls and before we left I had one in my tote bag. Weekends are great times for kids to clean their rooms. Mommy Note: Teach them to put things back in place throughout the week so this weekend chore does not become a weekend JOB. Don’t expect kids to clean like you. By bedtime their room will be back in shambles!

Dad watched from the sofa as he drifted to sleep. To his surprise, his granddaughters had secretly given him the gift of a makeover! They combed his hair while he slept. Rows of colored barrettes adorned his black silky curly hair. A few moments later, he was awakened by the aroma of mamma's smothered chicken, rice, collard greens, yams, hot water cornbread, and her yelling, “Dinner’s ready!” This was the best Father’s Day present ever. Every Father’s Day dad was appreciated and celebrated.

2

Choose your battles. Mommy Note: Some things can be addressed at a later time. Give grace and then more grace. Understand kids will make mistakes. Help them learn from those mistakes through wisdom and love.

It’s okay to have some “me” time. Mommy Note: Don’t punish yourself by thinking being away is being selfish. Get a babysitter, enjoy some time away!

Things Father’s Love… No honeydew list and absolutely, positively none of mama’s nagging!

Getting Out & Active

T 1

he seasons have changed!!! It’s time to get out and get active. There’s nothing like fresh air and the peace that nature can offer. We have complied our top picks for things to do to get out and active this season.

TAKE A WALK: This is our top pick for things to do to get out and get active. Whether you are taking a stroll in the neighborhood or walking for health benefits, this remains one of the easiest ways to enjoy the outdoors. Envelope yourself in the warmth of the sun and allow peace to fill you on your journey.

2 3

RIDE A BIKE: Nothing takes me back down memory lane than a bike ride. The wind blowing through your hair can be exhilarating! Trade in your tennis shoes every now and then for a good ole bike ride.

EARLY DINNER IN THE PARK: Picnics in the park have been popular outings for years. What about an early dinner in the park? With longer days of the sun providing more sunlight, an early dinner in the park is a great way to revamp a picnic in the park. If you’re really feeling in the mood, check your city’s listing for outdoor plays and/or concerts at nearby parks.

4

CONVERSATIONS ON THE PATIO: I absolutely love a good conversation by fireside even in Houston’s unpredictable weather, but I love conversations on our patio the most! Add in an iced beverage and let nature set the scene.

FIVE LADIES & A FORK The Destination: Mr. Peeples

W

e’re BACK!!! Who’s we you ask? It’s none other than 5 Ladies and a Fork! Last issue, I made reference of my girlfriends giggling at the idea of us turning our love of food into a bestie staffed food blog group! Since then, we have set our times so that we make sure we dine at divine places to share in each upcoming issue. We also created a neat rating system for each restaurant's visit. We are also excited because we plan to invite a guest each time we visit as our fifth lady (there are only 4 of us). Our most recent destination was Mr. Peeples. What a GRAND entrance! Mr. Peeples had us interested from the moment we stepped in! I myself fell instantly in love with the massive chandelier that hung overhead right before you entered the main space.

With reservations made, we were quickly checked in and seated to our table. Our server was very friendly as he made sure we had everything we needed. Appetizers were not only fresh and very tasty, they were beautifully arranged on each platter making them pleasing to the eye. I must admit, we were just about full! Dinner arrived and it was worth every second of preparation time! Mr. Peeples knows how to take care of each patrons from beginning to end! By the end of the night, I was planning my next visit.

Dining Experience: 4 out of 5 Forks

(1 being the lowest & 5 being the highest)

Super-Hostess- Tips

TO BUY OR TO RENT? It’s party season!! From Mother’s day to the fourth of July, there’s a celebration going on every month! I am often asked about the small details that go into party planning. It’s commonly said, the small details are what makes a party grand! We all want style but minus the grand budget costs to pull it off. Try these budget busters to save on the price tag but not your signature style. Golden Hostess Tip: Always shop around!

Renting china can cost less than buying paper plates. China $3 vs Paper $ 9.99 (set) *Note: China is not for every occasion and may include a refundable insurance fee.

Renting tables is a great option versus buying tables from a store. They can returned without having to make room for storing bought tables. Perfect for family picnics!

Buying table linens averages near the price of plastic versions and can be reused several times. Linen $10 vs Plastic $7.99 *Note: Linens are best for avid party throwers.

Renting centerpieces is a fab way to design without having to purchase expensive items that you will only use once! Perfect way to spruce up a romantic dinner.
